Windows 8 just deleted the partitions on my external drive and I've lost all my data! please help!

Windows 8 just deleted the partitions on my external drive and I've lost all my data! please help!

Hi All,

So I have just installed windows 8 on a laptop that had been running vista, all of its data was backed up to a 1TB external HDD which was partitioned as follows;

222 GB Clone of windows Vista C:

700 GB or so Volume containing Backups

3 GB Empty NTFS Volume

Once the basic installation was completed I used windows to create a restore drive using the 3GB partition (windows asked for at least 2GB) once this was completed however the 1TB Drive now had a 32GB Restore volume and the original volumes had disappeared!

Why has windows done this and how can I restore the partitions as they were? That disk contained the only backups of the laptop and ALL its data and the users for several years, photos, documents and everything!

I have tried running testdisk and scanning for lost partitions but it doesn't show anything up!

Thanks guys

Steven Sinofsky is out!

So this is kind of interesting timing.

That's because the Windows RT Surface sales numbers are sucking hard and Enterprises are shunning Windows 8. Steve Sinofsky is proving to be an utter disaster for Microsoft. He was a control freak who didn't listen to input. Good riddance and his $10+ million dollar/year salary (not including his tens of million in stock options). Perhaps Microsoft can finally start to pull themselves out of the crater he leaves behind.

I doubt that this was the reason.  In fact, Microsoft knew the resistance that Win8 would have (and did) met.  This was likely a power play within Microsoft.  Sinofski likely did not get the promotion he wanted and bolted.  If Win8 is going to be a disaster, it is not evident yet.  So, this is about something else and time would only tell.

Um. No. The only promotion Sinofsky could have had was to replace Ballmer himself. This wasn't about him not getting his promotion - as Sinofsky was one of the top ten highest paid MS execs in history. This was all about his control freak nature, upsetting numerous people at MS, upsetting numerous customers, and Windows 8 and RT dismal forecasts - especially in the Enterprise.

Well, we would all like to think so, but corporations really do not care much beyond the bottom line.  I am sure that Win8 and WinRT were the main subject of thousands of Microsoft meetings, with all aspects analyzed in extreme detail.  The numbers for the quarter have not even come in yet.  So, I doubt that this was it.

My theory is that Ballmer decided to "dilute" him out and he walked away.

I don't know why Sinosfky left, but if it means Microsoft will be more open to feedback on Windows 8, then it's a good thing.

As much as I hate Windows 8, even I got to admit that the thing is still too recent to project sales for the holiday season and beyond (I think).

I've read some interesting comment on mini-msft:

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the EU mess yet. Sinofski was given responsibility by the board for ensuring that MS stayed compliant with the agreement regarding browser choice in Windows. Now, MS is facing a possible 10 BILLION dollar enema by the EU because Sinofski couldn't be bothered by something as trivial as a check box in Windows. Good riddance.

Sinofsky was responsible for the browser's choice dialogue, really? If yes, then wow, he botched this with W7 SP1 badly.

I guess he thought that Windows 7 was "dead" by this point anyway (like 7's gadgets) so why bother..

In a large company like Microsoft, it is unlikely that such an item remained unobserved.  I am certain that any product goes through approval processes in various departments and legal would have been one of them.  So, I do not think that this can be pinned onto Sinofski; it was likely a legal department snafu, approving a product for release when it violated a standing agreement.  Or, it was done on purpose to start this dispute again.

As one who has worked with both the Surface and the iPad 3/4, I can definitiviely state that unless you are blind...the retina display is hands sown better to look at than the surface display. It's not that the surface is bad...it's actually quite good. The iPad, however...is simply stunning. I don't care what CNet rates in which column, it is clear that the iPad display beats the surface display hands down. You can see pixels on the surface, you can't even see the pixels on the iPad...it looks like a printed magazine page.

Again, no knock to the surface...but to say that the surface somehow beats the iPad display is hilarious to anyone who has used both devices. That's like saying the iPad 2 and iPad 4 look the same.

KB2731771 repeatedly fails to install on Windows Server 2008 R2 with error code 8000FFFF

Not finding anything useful on the web to resolve this.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
I've run disk cleanup, defragged the drive prior to reattempting the install, tried downloading the standalone installer which will not install either.
Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Some more suggestions...

Option 1:

Make sure the server time is in sync with the domain controller.

run following command to sync time with the DC.

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:DC_HostName.DomainName.com /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update

DC_HostName.DomainName.com - replace it with FQDN of your domain controller hostname. E.g. If your DC hostname is DC01 and Domain name is abc.com then command would look like below

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:DC01.abc.com /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update

Option 2:

Make sure Windows Firewall and UAC is turned off on the server.

Add following URLs in IE trusted sites explicitly and then try updating...

http://download.windowsupdate.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.update.microsoft.com
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com
http://update.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com
http://download.microsoft.com
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://ntservicepack.microsoft.com
http://wustat.windows.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
https://update.microsoft.com

Option 3:

Copy the text from below in a text file and save that file as fix.bat. Run fix.bat from elevated cmd (Run as Admin). Once batch is executed, try executing standalone update exe.

batch file credit goes to: Naman R

sc config wuauserv start= auto sc config bits start= auto sc config DcomLaunch start= auto net stop wuauserv net start wuauserv net stop bits net start bits net start DcomLaunch

Option 4:

Configure below settings in IE and then try updating

Last Option (already suggested in my previous reply):

Santosh,

I appreciate your help with this matter however none of the above have resolved the issue with the exception of the in place upgrade.  This server is my active DC and AD server and I just don't see what this windows update adds that would make it worthwhile to take the server offline in order to do the in place upgrade just to get the update to load.  As annoying as it is that this is the only update giving such an error and subsequent updates are installing just fine I will just have to resign to the fact that this one will just remain in a failed state.  Thanks again for your time.

Sincerely,

Chris

Chris,

Sorry to hear that, issue has still not been resolved. You might want to contact MS PSS for further investigation.

As none of the suggestions helped you to fix the issues, I am unmarking my previous post as answer and will change the thread type to discussion.

Thanks

Santosh,

I posted the following in the windows update product support forum...

I've been digging around still and found this reference in the CBS log...
External EvaluateApplicability, package: Package_for_KB2731771~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1, package applicable State: Installed, highest update applicable state: Installed, resulting applicable state:Installed

In reading this does this in fact mean that this update is installed and that for some reason the system is just thinking it has failed to install for some odd reason?

Any thoughts?

Chris

Hey Chris,

Sorry for the delayed reply, I overlooked your last response.

Looking at the CBS log message, I too suspect that the update in question has been installed on the server however, may be due to some dll conflicts it shows as failed.

Also, do you see this patch installed on the server if you view installed updates by any chance ?

Thanks

WIN XP PRO SP3, Cannot install security updates, KB2686828, KB951847, KB2604092,

I found what appeared to be a fix for this problem in this forum, but never could find the solution.  Here is my situation:

Microsoft Support,

I have a problem With my WIN XP PRO SP3. My latest security updates will not install.

I attempted this update multiple times, but always receive the same error message.

I even attempted to remove the installed KB2656369, but I received error message # 2721 (a fatal error occurred).

I was able to remove KB2604110 and install it, but the next update listed it as a module to be installed. Also, I went to the MicroSoft update page and was told I had to install KB2656369 by itself before I could continue.

The install failed. Then I ran Trouble Shoot, it told me it was installed already but did not tell me how to access it. Then I ran Fixit. It failed and gave error code 50597.

Then I wrote Twitter/microsoft support about my problem on July 6, 2012. No answer yet.

I listed the installed modules, the updates to be installed and the failure list.

I highlighted updates to be installed that are already installed

Yes.  The Dashboard calls it Microsoft Online Backup Service.  But the actual app is called Windows Azure Online Backup.  They are one in the same.

Try it from a client instead.  I had the same problem from the server, but it worked from a client.  (It most likely has to do with Internet Explorer Enhanced Security.)

Moving 100 Million Rows Cross Servers with Stored Procedure vs. SSIS

What are the pros & cons?

To me robust solution requires SSIS.

On the other hand, a SQL Server developer may not have inclination to learn SSIS.

The issue came up in the following thread:

Since it is between servers I would use SSIS, but only to avoid using linked servers. Yes, SSIS has error handling and logging and so on, but for such a simple load, this might be just overkill.

As mentioned in the other thread, CDC might be a good solution to reduce those million rows to a whole lot less.

Hi Koen,

Thanks. There is a recurring theme also which is not technical in nature rather IT career management.

Should an excellent C#, web & T-SQL developer (perhaps "a reluctant DBA") venture into SSIS, CDC or transactional replication just for a single table cross server copy?

If the developer chooses to go the heavy-duty DBA tasks way, in no time he/she ends up to be the DBA.

A TSQL developer should at least know a bit about SSIS and CDC. But indeed, for a single table copy, learning a whole new tool might not be suitable and maybe even frustrating.

Most web/C# developers will code their way through, because that's the way they're used to work. Probably when they use SSIS they will still use the Script Task :)

There's no easy answer for this. I would argue to search for the right tool for the job, but arguing which tool is most suitable for a cross-server table copy, usually tends to give an endless discussion :)

SSIS script for checking data and data quality

Hi,

If someone do the initial load and incremental load into a dimension table or a fact table, after that i have to create and execute the script.

1. to check the data, whether it is matching or not.

2. check the data quality.

and I want to do something dynamically ( can be anything ) not manually checking of thousand of data (rows).

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

You want to check data after it has been loaded to the fact or dim table?

Some example of what you're trying to accomplish would be appreciated...

Did not know this is a question, it is of type information this post. Yes, only automated solutions can check for so many rows, DQS is part of SQL Server. Or there are Data Quality add-ons for SSIS e.g. from MelissaData:

http://blog.melissadata.com/data-quality-authority/data-quality-components-for-ssis/

SQL Server 2012 already has them.

Matching is typically achieved using DQS, too or Fuzzy Lookups and Grouping: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163731.aspx

Dim tables - data is loaded row by row. Fact table - data is loaded as a batch.

We have been luckily working with SQL Server worldwide teams together including development team, test team and PM team on the product and also on the release testing during the past years, here are how we think and feel from different perspectives. Please note we just participated in the testing on SQL Server management related features, for example SQL Server Management Studio, so below are just about SQL Server management related testing:

  • Overall? The release testing is very complicated but well planned according to priority and dependencies, it took hundreds of people and a thousand of lab machines for months, but it is efficient and effective;
  • Automated? Most of the testing are automated and distributed to execute on the thousand of lab machines, for example the function testing; for branding and copyright testing, they are manual testing as visual check;
  • How many test cases were executed? Take the full function test for example, it is more than 1M;
  • UI and API based testing? Both. In other words, we have both white box testing like unit testing and black box testing like integration testing;
  • What kind of tests did we run: in short, a lot J--functional, performance, compatibility, security, stress, localizability, globalization, localization, fuzzer test, upgradability, patch-ability, supportability, accessibility and scenario testing and so on, also bug bash by all of SQL Server team members;
  • Any other Microsoft teams needed to work together? Yes, that is really a lot of communication and collaboration-a big big cross team work! For example: Visual Studio teams and their v-next, Windows 8 team, .net team, office team…
  • A little bit more detail about some above examples? For example security, we had both code review, code static analysis by powerful Microsoft internal tools and tools published like PREfix, PREfast, and FxCop; and also testing by security professionals.

You also might ask, "Rome is not built in one day", how could we ensure the release schedule and high quality of SQL Server?

  • Firstly, we are using the mainline and branch engineering model, the mainline code is always kept in a good status and the new features are developed in the branch, we will ensure the new code is well tested before it comes back to the mainline;
  • Secondly, we have Community Technical Preview (CTP) versions periodically released to the community and some customers for preview and trial, there are many valuable feedback and comments from them which ensure we are on the right direction that meet the customer requirement and market;
  • Thirdly, we also dog food it J Before release it worldwide, we also use it internally on many mission critical infrastructure and application servers. For example, we also deployed AlwaysOn features on some important test scheduling and tracking servers which requires high availability, high performance and execute complicated workflow.
That is about our story - it has been such an amazing experience!

Windows 8 does not remember Explorer windows positions

Windows 8 Professional RTM installed to an empty HDD. Windows sizes and positions are not remembered by OS. This is pretty annoying because I have two monitors, and Explorer windows always opened in the same location force me to rearrange them manually.

I've seen some topics discussing the same issue in Windows 7. It seems that MS developers produced some patches to fix it. What about Win8?

I doubt that MS ever fixes such issues, because they think the feature are "Metro" fullscreen apps

Andre,

Thank you, but no thanks. :) I don't like to install 3rd party system software unless it's absolutely necessary. Instead I'll continue to hope the developers will fix this bug sooner or later. It's only a few strings of code, nothing difficult, so maybe some probationer programmer will do it as a test of his/her abilities...

Then you have to wait forever. It won't happen. MS is no longer fixing such issues on the desktop. Desktop = dead

Hi - I get a fatal error with FSX in Windows 8 Pro (32 bit), also.  It ran fine in Windows 7.

I ran SP1 for FSX and it installed fine.  SP2 for FSX couldn't detect SP1 and so refused to install.

I have set FSX.exe into compatibility mode with Win XP Sp3, but that didn't help.

Windows VPN: problem with shared folders

Hi,

I connect from my home computer (Win7 Pro SP1) to a remote standalone server (WinSrv2003 Std R2 SP2) in a private network without any domain via VPN (PPTP). I have local admin permissions on the server and I can connect OK to the server using RDC. Firewalls on both sides are disabled.

How can I get access to the shared folder on the remote server from my home computer?

PS: Currently I get an "unknown error" when trying to map network drive to a shared folder. I specify this folder in the following format: "\\server_ip\share". Here "server_ip" is the one used to establish RDC session. I cannot use server name instead of its IP (DNS is not configured properly) - but it's not a problem, I'm ready to work using IP only.

Sorry, my mistake: firewall at my home computer was NOT disabled.

If I temporarily disable it - everything is OK: I can map network drive.

So another question: which protocols and ports should I "open" in my firewall's settings to enable file sharing?

Thanks, but these articles describe how to do this only in Windows Firewall: in fact they describe which tabs to select and which buttons to press in the Windows Firewall UI. As far as no any protocol names and/or port numbers are mentioned there, I can't adapt these solutions to Outpost (which is installed at my home PC).

Hi,

Based on my research, the File and Printer Sharing Service uses TCP 139, 445 and UDP 137, 138.

Please create the exceptions in you firewall and see how it works.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jeremy. I'll try it this evening and then post back.

[UPDATE] I checked settings of my Outpost: all incoming TCP connections are allowed - as well as incoming UDP 137 and 138. So there's nothing to change. Guess there must be another solution.

Hi,

Thanks for the update.

However, as the issue does not occur when you disable the firewall and we may not familiar with Outpost Firewall, would you please contact Agnitum Support to check if they have a workaround.

Thanks.

Is there any way to disable Metro UI and bring the Start menu back safely?

Hi,

We have deployed some test PCs in school wide to collect feedback about Windows 8 so we can start preparing ourself as IT department. So far the highest amount of  complaint (>80%) about Metro UI and non-existence of Start menu. We are looking safe and genuine ways to disable Metro UI and bring the Start menu back otherwise we will have to follow the feedback and not deploy Windows 8 on any machine, as majority staff and students found very hard to use it and slowing down the users especially when they do multitasking.

I was wondering if there is any solution for it?

Regards

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I already tested start8 but did not find it useful as many function not operating like in Win7's start menu. I wasn't after a third party software. If there is any internal trick I would be very happy to apply. I also would like to use it with Windows 2012 as that UI also ruined by MS. I dont understand how many network admin use touch screen on their server room!

The problem with all these utilities is that they are only one Microsoft patch away from not working.  Unless Microsoft provides this option, this is not an enterprise-acceptable approach.  For individual users who like to experiment, yes, they may provide a relief, presently.

when did you try it, .90 just came out and it was vastly improved... There will never be an internal fix.  MS has decided touch is the way forward, despite the wishes of its users.

Not going to happen.  There will never be a way to patch this out.  They have tried through the testing from cp thru RTM and frankly, they failed.  In fact you can bypass metro and go directly to desktop in the rtm despite what MS said.

I work for a large enterprise.  I do not buy what you are selling.  It takes 5 secs to install either of these utilities that give 100% of the start menu functionality.  Zero seconds once your master is created.

By all means, have Metro on Metro devices.  But please let desktops continue.

In enterprise environment using such a third party softwares is not a good idea. MS, at least should have left server side alone with the proper UI. Oh my dear Metro UI just terrible on Server 2012. There are very nice features came along with Windows 2012 but this UI messing up everything. Obviously MS did not learn anything from their past experiences. I was planning to deploy a couple of virtual server on Win 2012's HyperV because of improved features with a guest Linux but definitely not going to happen and now I am not going to activate any Win 2012 servers in my environment unless MS decide to listen the payers!

Integrating HyperV into server editions was a big step from MS and forcing Metro UI is the biggest mistake they have ever done. Time will show everything. Now I am going to deploy Centos on a physical machine instead of HyperV unfortunately. What a waste!

look the people who want the desktop can just use the professional version (like I did). I know many people who hardly ever use Windows and use the Ipad.

This is a problem in Microsoft's eyes. The days of user developed programs are GONE get over it. Most People no longer want to click around for days they want simplicity.

Not forgetting the latest Classic menu, also includes a section with the shortcuts to the Metro screen. As Drx69 says, it takes a moment to install and, furthermore, if you are reinstalling after a loss, possibly due to an OS update, your settings are retained by cookies.

There is, for those who want more choice, even a program available which will skip the metro and leave you in a position where you can install any one of the existing third party menus, at your leisure. Here:

Hi,

You have 2 different problems : desktops and servers.

My first suggestion for both desktops and servers would be a general one : wait until SP1 is released.

Most initial OS releases I remember have been unstable or slow, with most of these critical issues solved by its SP1.

Furthermore, I wouldn't use any registry or freeware tricks, they might be disabled on the next MS Win8 update, so you'd be left with a bunch of

frustrated or confused users in a short-term future.

As for your desktop problem, I can think of 3 choices :

1. Train your users and yourself on Win8 environment.

Keep it installed in a few machines until SP1 is released, giving time to everyone (including yourself) to be acquainted with this new OS.

2. Stay on Win7 for the long-term waiting for Win9 to be released.

Nobody knows how will MS react to user comments on Win8, so it's kind of a risky bet.

And, there's the possibility that Win9 will be even more different from Win7 than Win8 currently is.

3. Move to another OS like Linux or OSX though that's a major change, involving lots of user and admin training, driver hiccups, application compatibility,

hardware or software costs, etc. Not a trivial decision.

Your servers are an entirely different story.

MS is pushing PowerShell and Windows Server Core, both technologies let you run and manage your servers from a GUI-less environment.

Most of the new server products (like SQL Server 2012) run well on Server Core, so (depending on the software you use) you may avoid W2012 GUI confusion.

Yes, install this tool:

Original fully-featured Windows 7 start menu

StartIsBack restores original Windows 7 start menu with all its features: search, drag&drop, pinned and recently used apps, fully customizable settings. Start button and Start menu look and behave exactly as they used to in Windows 7.

Boot to desktop

Your session would start with the desktop. Always. Unlike other solutions, StartIsBack goes directly to desktop every time without flashing Start Screen even for a millisecond.

3$ for 2 licenses is fair.

I am staying with Win7 Pro or Ultimate at least for next 2 years.  In fact, I have ordered a number of Thinkpads with Win7.  I am not going to contaminate any desktop or laptop with Win8.  It is not the appropriate OS for these machines.

I agree that Win9 would go even more down the "Metro" road than Win8.  In fact, I think that Win9 would be arriving next year, as Microsoft is going to go to annual releases, very much like all other mobile OSes.  Eventually (within 3 years), the desktop will disappear.

Thus, Windows and Microsoft are not a good bets either now or in the future for desktop/notebook computing.  Eventually, another solution will emerge.  I do not think that it will be Mac's OSX (although it can be if Apple is clever about it).  It may be Linux 3.x with something resembling VMWare Fusion 5 or Parallels.    If VMWare has any brains, it would be working hard to bring a version of Fusion 5 to Linux, not just only to Macs.  If this happens, I will kiss Windows goodbye in an instant and watch from the sidelines Microsoft fighting it out on tablets with Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and others!!

I have posted this in another thread but if one wants to run Android mobile apps on Win7, one can install Bluestacks. This is a lot better choice than moving to Win8 and running the Metro apps.

In fact, Bluestacks syncs the applications you have on your Android cell phone with your desktop!!!!  Much, much better than the supposed integration of Win8 with WinPhone 8 (the Metro apps there are incompatible!!
