Window Text font too big, scrolls out of dialog boxes

Window Text font too big, scrolls out of dialog boxes

I hope someone can help with this. Google has not been my friend.

The Window Text size on my Vista Home Premium machine is big. Too big, in fact, to display correctly in most Windows system dialog boxes. And as we know, these verdammt boxes are not resizable. Up to now, this has been a minor annoyance, but now it's a major one: it's keeping me from completing the Vista x64 SP2 patch install.

Here are some screenshots so you can see what I'm talking about:

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

As you can see in the screenshots, the window text is just too big. It overflows the sides of the dialog. And because the SP2 EULA screen requires that you view all its text, and I can't, I never get an active "NEXT" button to proceed with the installation. Changing screen res does not help.

I've tried Personalize > Windows Color and Appearance > Open Classic Appearance Properties to reset the Window Text size, but the option to do this is grayed out. Help!

Thanks for the answer, Dale, but it doesn't help.

I refuse to accept that there is no solution to this problem. There must be a registry hack somewhere that will allow me to fix this problem!

Hi,

Unfortunately the above suggestions didn't take effect, anyway thanks for your cooperation.

Based on my further research and test on our test machines. I would like to propose the following suggestions.

1. Make sure that you have the latest video driver installed on your computer, you may need to update it through Device Management.

2. Try to change this behavior in Advanced Appearance, please visit the following website for details.

Advanced Appearance

3. I also found some solutions about modifying registry related to Font Size, you can visit the following websites for references.

Note: Be careful with registry modifications, you'd better back up registry first.

Thanks for the information, Dale.

I had already tried Chris Pirillo's Font Fix, with no success. Advanced Appearance likewise does not work. I also tried the "How to change the default fonts" method in your second link - no go.

Guess this is just something I'll have to live with?

Hi,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Unfortunately, neither of above works. However, I will keep doing a further investigation.

As I mentioned above, please check that your video driver is up-to-dated. A newer version of the driver might include a resolution to the problem.

Meanwhile, I noticed that this issue occurred in Windows Vista SP2 installation. How did you install Windows Vista SP2, upgrading from the previous Operating System or clean installation with Windows Vista SP2? Did this issue occur in the previous Operating System?

If the previous Operating System didn't own this issue, I may need to suggest that you do System Restore to the previous restore point without any problem, then perform reinstall Windows Vista SP2 following steps in the website as follow:

Hi Dale,

I have not yet installed Vista SP2, because of the error noted above. My Dell came from the factory with Vista SP1 installed, so there was no previous OS and nothing to System Restore to.

Thank you for the link about installing SP2.

Hello MSFT.
Why don't You answer on exact question - but try to discuss unrelated solutions??
Videocard drivers??? - Very funny advice!
Reinstall OS - no comments....

Maybe You better open that dialog box("Advanced Appearence" in Vista and "Window Color and Appearence" in Windows 7) and see problem by Yourself?
Click at "Window Text" or open menu item "Window" there and try to change Font Size or Font - it's inactive!

We have same exact question - Where And How can we change or add some settings (I believe in registry) - so
I could change Default Windows FONT - as described above.
I can change anything text size/fonts but not for Main text - "window text".
And btw I tryed to change it and in Vista and in Windows 7.

Reply:

The problem is generally caused by some "repairing" tools, I think even sfc.exe does this. These tools put name of incorrect font file under key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts"
"Courier 10,12,15"
"MS Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24" - this causes the most visible problems in dialogs.
"MS Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24"

As the fonts with ".fon" suffix are different for each codepage, the name of correct font is dependent on the locale of your Windows, so the easiest way is to look for a correct name at a computer which uses the same version of Windows and correct fonts in dialogs.

Otherwise, you have to look at %systemroot%\Fonts directory and list available fonts, e.g. sse*.fon for "MS Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24". These fonts can be marked as hidden (e.g. in Windows XP).

ssee1255.fon
ssee1256.fon
ssee1257.fon
ssee874.fon
ssef1255.fon
ssef1256.fon
ssef1257.fon
ssef874.fon
sserife.fon
sserifee.fon
sserifeg.fon
sserifer.fon
sserifet.fon
sseriff.fon
sseriffe.fon
sseriffg.fon
sseriffr.fon
sserifft.fon

Those beggining with "sse" having "e" on 4th position are smaller fonts, those having "f" on 4th position are bigger ones.
The numbers from 5th position equal to ASCII codepage:

874 - Thai
1255 - Hebrew
1256 - Arabic, Farsi and Urdu
1257 - Baltic languages such as Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian

Those beggining with "sserif" having "e" on 7th position are smaller fonts, those having "f" on 7th position are bigger ones.
8th position means:

nothing - Western European script
e - Eastern European script
g - Greek script
r - Russian script
t - Turkish script.

You should use the correct script for your locale, otherwise the general font substitution will result in those fonts visible inUsers MedalsUsers MedalsShowbizkid's first picture.

i had the same problem in windows 7. this simple registry hack works like a charm.

http://steve.fsxtreme.com/blogs/2008/01/16/say-no-to-segoe-and-cleartype-on-vista/

This is really great information, Pavel. Thank you for posting it.

Unfortunately, my system has the correct Western Euro sserife.fon file listed in the registry for MS Sans Serif, so I already have the correct value there.

Problem Fixed!

I tried the "NoSegoe" fix above, but had no luck. But that started me thinking: What if Segoe itself was the problem?

So I opened my Fonts folder and found that SegoeUI was not listed. I reasoned that Windows was substituting a FON system font for the missing SegoeUI, and re-installed the Segoe family from a backup font archive. Control Panel told me that SegoeUI was already installed (even though I couldn't see it), and asked if I wanted to overwrite it. I clicked "yes" and did a Log Off / Log On cycle and the problem was fixed!

So my SegoeUI font family was apparently corrupt, and Windows was using a substitute screen font that was too big. After this, I was finally able to download and install the Vista SP2 service pack.

Big thanks to everyone who contributed to helping me get my fix! Hope this helps someone else to solve their problem too.

'Though this may or may not relate to your specific problem, I leave this note here for others with similar problems who happen to find this article. As stupid as this may sound, a lot of the text that people would assume to be controlled with the option you show above as being greyed-out is actually controlled by the value for the item labeled "Icon". See the drop-down menu which is above the one you show in your screen capture, select icon, change the font characteristics, click "OK", and finally click "Apply".

There is a similar problem, but ocurring in just some dialogs.

my solution was to copy the files comctl32.dll and comdlg32.dll (located in system32 or syswow64 depending on your flavor of windows 7) from another windows 7 (that its runing just fine, doesnt matter if it has sp1 installed or not).

you cannot just overwrite the files, so i used hiren's boot disc (use google to get that) to run a live os and erase the bad files from my system and then copy the new files in.

to be

"MS Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24"="SSERIFE.FON"

I had a similar problem with Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, SP1 (on an HP EliteBook 8740w, NVIDIA Quadro FX2800M w/ 1GB dedicated RAM, and a WUXGA (1920x1200) display). Many applications and pages had a font that was too large for the screen real estate allotted to that particular window. Here's what I found:

My system was set to "Medium - 125% (default)" out of the box. Apparently this IS the default. I set mine to "Smaller - 100%" (as shown in the screen shot above) and all applications worked great and scaled correctly based on the screen real estate allotted to that particular window. Hope this helps!

Had the same problem on a new DELL Precision M6600 laptop with a resolution of 1920x1080.   For some reason, Windows 7 determined that I should use 125%, and changing the per user setting to 100% still had some dialog boxes displayed with a much bigger font, making it overflow the dialog.

From Davel's explanation I could understand why my windows was still using a bigger fonts in some dialog boxes and not all of them.  Any application still using the Ms Serif and Sans Serif fonts was using the wrong .FON file.  Changing the name of the fonts in the registry fixed the problem.

One other thing worth mentionning.  In order to make sure to force a 96 DPI setting as a system default, you might have to search for the "LogPixels" value in the whole registry and wherever you see 120 (or 78 hexa), change it to 96 (or 60 hexa).

Thanks again!

i'm struggling with a related issue.

On Windows 7 Starter, I reduced my DPI to less than 100% using the steps explained here:

http://superuser.com/questions/80151/how-to-setup-custom-dpi-below-100-on-windows-7

This image shows this on my computer.

Problem: Immediately after doing this, fonts in dialog boxes are oversized. See image. You can see how the 'Advanced' button is off-screen.

I made various attempts to fix this, based on tips in the above thread and other articles.

Here are my Advanced settings. What I choose here seems to have no affect on dialog boxes:

This shows my MS Serif setting in the registry. It appears to be correct, according to this and other discussions:

Here's my Segoe UI entry in the registry.

Here are my font substitution entries for MS Shell Dlg:

Here are my Segoe UI properties from Windows/Fonts folder. It appears to be missing sizes lower than 12, but choosing a size of 12 (or any other size) in Advanced Settings seems to have no effect on dialog boxes.

I'm not expert enough to know how to fix it. Can anyone make sense of this?

Thanks!

ZTIBde.wsf - Update suggestion.

(Took me sometime to find this little bugger.)

Change row 94 to:

If UCase(oEnvironment.Item("BdeInstallSuppress")) <> "NO" and (oEnvironment.Item("IsBDE")) <> "TRUE" Then

Needless to say - I was having the statement BdeInstallSuppress=No in the settings... :-)

Well Its an rather small change. But annoying to me. In my customsettings.ini I had the statement:

BdeInstallSuppress=No

However, the code does not allow for use of lowercase on this specific setting. I.e I needs to have it: BdeInstallSuppress=NO

Thus the simple change of adding the UCase statement will fix the problem.

I never got the script to execute further so I dug into the code and found one small small point for some improvement that I thought I should share...

Kind regards,

Christian

separating groups on network but sharing printers

I will have a small group of guest users on my network who will need access to the organization's printers. We have a domain server (2003 std) and organization files on the server are protected because the guests don't have a domain logon. But some workers in and out with their laptops have shares on them that I'd just as soon aren't even findable by the guests. (I know, the shares should be controlled, but people just do stuff.) I would just give them guest internet access and that's it but they need to access our network printers. Is there a way to do this I'm missing or should I just say we can't share printers? The PC are a mix of XP and Win7. Thanks.

IIS doe not wait for charts to load

We have a chart/graph application in .NET technology. Users has access to the chart server thro' an IIS proxy ( currently at ver 6.0, now trying to upgrade to 7.5). the users has the option to select up to 9 charts to be displayed in the dashboard. While there is no change to the chart server, we have to upgrade the IIS proxy to ver 7.5.

Here we face the problem, thro' IIS 7.5 proxy, only few charts are getting loaded and other are not. If we try after few minutes, more charts are getting loaded. It seems like IIS proxy is not waiting until all charts are getting loaded/rendered. Especially the first time, it will take some time load the charts. In the current setup(with IIS 6.0), it should say " charts take some time to load").

Can you please through some light, what setting in IIS would help to resolve this problem

Azure Tables & Search Indexing

Hello,

I'm trying to index words of a document on Azure Tables. My indexer splits words and send them to Azure Tables with word's score and documentID. The sturcture is like this:

Table:  "Words"

(PartitionKey: "the" RowKey: "Document1")
-Score: 0.0035

(PartitionKey: "time" RowKey: "Document1")
-Score: 0.0023

(PartitionKey: "machine" RowKey: "Document1")
-Score: 0.0062

(PartitionKey: "machine" RowKey: "Document2")
-Score: 0.0105

I'm querying the table to get all the rows with given partition key as it is the word that'ım looking for.

For example I get 2 entities for word "machine".

But: It's incredibly slow. I have 256 words and 1000 entity per words. It takes 2 seconds to get 100 entities with a one word query and about 3 seconds get 100 entities with a three word query.

I must add, indexing is also very slow; 10,000,000 entities saved in about two days.

Is there any other way to index words? Is there any way to increase performance in this scenario?

Note: Sorry, my English is poor :((

Reply:

Not exactly sure as to why it is that slow. It should not be that slow if you are just querying on a partition key.
However you may consider using Lucene.NET as it is an easier and more powerful way to accomplish document word indexing.

Hi Burak,

Did you check Jai's post on ".NET and ADO.NET Data Service Performance Tips for Windows Azure Tables"? it has some useful tips even if you are not using the Windows Azure Storage Client Library.

You can also check this blog post on "How to get most out of Windows Azure Tables" which shows what to expect in terms of performance and provides performance tips.

We also advise you to turn ON analytics for your account through the new Azure Portal which would allow you to inspect per request server and network latencies. More information at "Windows Azure Storage Analytics" and "Windows Azure Storage Logging: Using Logs to Track Storage Requests".

What Library are you using?

For Insert Entity are you using parallel requests?

Are you accessing storage from Windows Azure Compute? If so, what VM size and how many instances are you using?

Most of the information should be covered by the links that I provided above, However please let me know if you are still running into performance issues and we would be happy to assist you further.

RoboCopy deletes destination file when copy fails from error 33 (locked file)

I've found when using RoboCopy for backups that if a file is locked by another app. (like Outlook will lock a .pst file) then RoboCopy reports error 33, and of course does not copy the file, and deletes the file from the destination! Apparently, it deletes the file from the destination in the process of starting the copy, but then when the copy fails, the file has already been deleted. It should of course check if it can copy the file first before deleting it. I'm running Vista Enterprise SP2 so I hope this has been fixed since.

I have a lot of empathy & understanding for my colleagues in the Forum.  However, I realise as new folks keep coming to the forum, we must persevere.  The point of a forum, as we see it, the aim, is to help people, guide, instruct, offer some insight & enlightenment & maybe, even fix something... or promote keeping things from breaking.  One of the most important, take-aways in computing is to be proactive rather than & more than reactive.

Certainly, civil, courteous, polite, healthy, mature, respectful discussion is good & welcomed, also.

There may be some variation on defining "debate".  And this is were my peers find things "get old"... and I can see their rational.  I was on the Debate Club many, many moons ago.  Debate, by definition, meant stating a supported idea that, therefore, had credit & merit.  Therefore, the other party would pay heed & give due, thoughtful, consideration and evaluation, compared to their own take on things, up to that point.  From there could be sound & decent conversation, arriving at a conclusion or understanding or new understanding.

That said, when we grow accustom to 'debate' where there is no open ear, no open-mindedness, there's been heaps of that, already.  'Debate' & prejudice don't play well together.  To define prejudice... not that it isn't ok to dislike something or criticise it but, that the mind is, already, absolutely, decided... that's not debate.  That's banging your head against a brick wall.  That's frustrating.

I'll say this just as an objective, observation.  My colleagues, know, as a Beta Tester, I can and must be objective.  It would do the development of a product no good, @ all, if testers & builders did not, equally look @ all aspects, be they felt to be good or bad.

It did not take long, @ all, to discover & learn Windows8
In some cases numbers in Win8 are better than prior, in some not.  To most folks the differential in specs won't matter or be noticed, consciously.  The are huge technical changes, additions & enhancements in Windows8.  Most people won't notice or care... or maybe not.  Point is, it will vary, both in magnitude & in what ways.  But, no matter, fact is, there is, indeed & in fact some amazing & impressive technology in Win8.  However, there is no obligation to adopt it October 2012.  But, remember, life is a continuum.  IF, not October, for someone, for some reason, @ some point, the time may come.

A big par of things is human nature... many humans don't take well to change, period, it's just a reality. It's a truism, that , actually, that's what rears its ugly head every time an OS is released.  Yet, I liked XP better than Win 98; there were likable (new) things, approaches to things in Vista... I beta tested Vista for a year and both praise it an razed it.  Windows7 which, I beta tested for a year was much better.  Nothing is perfect and perfect is subjective.  People get perfect & ideal twisted.  A person thinks something isn't perfect because it doesn't meet their ideal.  When Microsoft builds an OS, people forget, it is w/ a global view, it is for billions, not for you in the sense that you cannot please everyone all the time or all @ the same time.  This concept gets severely forgotten.  Not it is not perfect & no, everybody is not going to like everything about it all the time.  To expect otherwise is 100% silly.  To accept something, to discover it, learn it is not a bad thing.  It may be different, to whatever degree, it may be new but, it IS.

All my colleagues (& I) feel is has little value to bash things or whine & complain.  it is better to add a "yeah but".  Yeah but, what could I enjoy or smile about, what could I use or do, even, if, it's instead of something that was?  Yeah but, can I talk about alternatives, workarounds, how tos... yeah but, how do I do things, where are they, what is there to learn, know & discover.  It comes down to attitude & not having a predetermined chip on ones shoulder.  There's better time spent than sticking pins in a Bill Gates doll.  It won't help anything.  And we here are glad to be helpful.  That is not possible & is nothing but, frustrating, if, it falls on deaf ears.

I had been studying Win8 since before BUILD on Sept. 14, 2011.  I sat through, attentively all the Presentation @ BUILD.  I worked w/ the DP; reported to the Windows8 Build Team. I worked w/ the CP.  I started Beta Testing when the CP was released and have continued w/ the RP.  I have been running Win8 non-stop since 29/2/12.  I have gained a lot of respect, awareness & appreciation for it.  There have been many things I have praised to the Win8 Build Team AND many things I have faulted, many things I have requested & suggested.  Everything backed up w/ details, data & examples so, it's believable, accurate & clear.

As for debate... some, many who are not in IT or Enterprise, say business will hate Windows8.  Corporate sources are saying the opposite.  Some say youth will love it... nobody questions that one.  Some say the elderly & or XP Users will hate it... the irony is most of those in the forums, who are keen on Win8 & took to it easily & quickly are older folks.

But, the irony does not stop there.  We hear people say it is hard to navigate... it is easier & more efficient than Windows7.  We feel, ask, instead of grumble. It, can't be all that, otherwise so many people would not like it so much AND THEY DO!  We do get tired of people fussing about the Start screen because that is so very silly & groundless.  Many of us never, even, use of visit it.  People say things like you have to contend w/ a million tiles & scroll for days... none of which, is true.

Just listen & be willing to take from others & re-evaluate & adjust & forget comparing... why?  Of course it's different... and in 3 more years there will be another different OS.

I don't often or usually write this much, my fingers are tiring.  We'd love to help, (debate, not, too, sure why, makes people nervous what is meant by that), discuss, have people willing to listen & think about what others might know or perceive (differently from them).  Be willing to revisited certain notions.

A mountainous amount of investigative research, surveys, feedback, testing & questionnaires came before Windows8.  The idea that it was blindly & stubbornly shoved @ the world is rubbish!  The efforts to know what people both in & out of business want & need, will like, understand & use OR NOT has been & is & will continue to be huge.

Yep, Microsoft want to be successful.  That doesn't make it a terrible company.  It is the fundament raison d'etre of any business or entrepreneur.  Yep, they need to bother w/ the changing landscape in IT.  no question that means mobility... phones, tablets, et al.  The workplace, the workforce is getting more mobile all the time.  Computers are everywhere, classrooms, homes, offices, in the stands @ an event, in your hand on the bus.  Things keep changing... Microsoft are not idiots or weird for trying & wanting to stay in pace w/ that.  There will, still, be a huge place taken up by conventional, non-Touch DESKTOP PCs & laptops.  It is a huge thing that Microsoft has made an OS that will work on ALL devices... harmony & syncing & consistency.  It is a huge thing that Windows8 does not need super-robust or new gear.  Those are not bad things.  We are going to adapt, like it or not, to OUR changing times... the future is not going to wait while, some people cry about what WAS in XP.

Finally, please try to sympathise... we have heard a lot of false things suggested, we tire of being made to feel like we talk but, to uninterested ears.  We've been there, done that, have the T-shirt.  It was a new read for us, too, excitedly we perused & pursued it  Though, @ the end of the day, we know how good & how sensible & easy Windows8 is.  So, it is tough when we are, only, told it's horrid & we are missing something because, somehow we've come to know it is not horrid, dumb or difficult... no matter how many times or ways we repeat the actual, reality & facts.  It is not a matter of debating who or what is right or wrong.  It is a matter of what is in hand, the here & now and having a good, pleasant, productive User Experience w/ Windows8.

Regards,
Drew

v 2.4 released -NEW FEATURE: ResultsGrid scripter. Allows to script Results grid contents using user defined templates. After scripting is done results can be placed to clipboard, saved to file or saved to file&opened by specified application. For example, to open results grid contents in Excel you only need a few clicks: Select desired rows or Ctrl-A (select all) -> right click grid selection -> "Copy Data as" -> -> "XML (Excel tweak)" -> "Save & Open". Done. Templates can be customized & added by user. Feature is shipped with 7 pre-defeined templates *[XML (Excel tweak)] - saves results in XML format, that can be opened by Excel *[INSERT INTO #tmp exec sp_name] - generates CREATE/INSERT EXEC script for results of Stored Procedure execution. *[WHERE] - selected values are copied as 'WHERE (ColumnName=Value) OR ...' allowing to generate WHERE filters by selecting required column values *[HTML <table>] - results are saved as HTML Table *[Property:Value] - copies results as ColumnName:Value *[XML (pure)] - results are saved as pure XML *[SELECT] - scripts results as SELECT VALUES. You can run generated SQL script and get same results once again LIMITATIONS: We wanted to give you the power of this feature as soon as possible, so we decided to publish it now, though, there are some things that will be improved in next release: In current release there is no possibility to work with data formatting. For example, if your scripted text values will contain some special characters and data will be scripted as XML it will get broken. In next version we will add datatype-based formatting which will allow you to make additional post-processing of scripted values, most probably with regex. If you like this featue and see improvement possibilities - please write us your proposals. -NEW FEATURE: GridResults visualizer. Allows to save contents of single cell to disk and open with specified program. Applications: if your database keeps Word documents, Excel files, pictures and other files in tables, you can open these files directly from results grid. Just right-click the cell and choose "Visualize as". Visualizers list is configurable. You can add your own datatypes. Feature is pre-configured with visualisers for Excel, Word, Pictures, Text. -NEW FEATURE: 'Important' Database/Server Alert: SSMSBoost already allows to define Statusbar color, depending on connection. Some users wanted to have additional warning, when they have worked with "very important database". If you switch on this feature for Preferred Connection, a permanent tooltip will appear at desired position in SQL Editor window, showing you Informational/Warning message, that you can customize. This is per-connection setting. You can choose color, font, location.Initial idea was to let you customize background color of active window per connection, but unfortunately due to some limitations in SSMS it came out to be impossible. -Scripting Objects: added additional command "Script as ALTER". Previously F2 shortcut would Script database object "as CREATE". Now you can use Shortcuts editor of SSMSBoost to decide if F2 will "Script as Create" or "Script as ALTER"

Dual Bootable External HDD

Hello Guys,

We created Winodows XP Images thorugh Symantec Ghost. As now we are moving to Windows 7, so are creating Windows 7 Image thorugh MDT 2012(Creating Media). For windows 7 Deployment, we don't have any environment set at our client side. So we need to create some bootable external media through which engineer can deploy the images on workstations.

But here we have only one External HDD assigned to engineer and they need to deploy Ghost Images as well as Windows 7 images thorugh the same.

Here our problem is that we are not able to create bootable(dual boot) media through which we can get option to deploy both Ghost Images as well as Windows 7 Images(Created through MDT(Media).

Please help us if anyone has done this..

Thanks,

Dinesh Kashyap

You can modify the BCD file for a bootable cd to boot multiple wims, but its a pain to do, because you need to refer to a long GUID and the command lines get ugly. I have a batch file that I got from Johan, that creates a BCD file capable of booting three separate WIMS. It can be modified to suit.

Larger issue is, booting from a hard drive to install win 7 can be problematic. MDT cant differentiate between an exgternal and internal HDD. Flash drives are no problem, but disks don't work so well and aren't supported.

Create your boot cd folders as you normally would witrh the WAIK, create a BCD file using the batch file, and copy the WIMS to the Sources folder.

Thanks JoeZeppy for your quick response. We already have a solution to deploy both .GHO and Install.WIM images. As this whole process works in command prompt so we are only able to deploy Install.Wim through ImageX.

But here we need to deploy the media which we have created through MDT. It includes Drivers, Security Patches and Packages. Its completely a GUI based installation so during installation start; it gives a compatibility error and installation ends.

Here we are requested to create bootable external HDD which give message like:

1. Deploy Ghost Images

2. Deploy Wim Images(MDT Media)

3. Exit

Engineer choose the option according to reqested Image and then it boots accordingly.

Thank, Dinesh Kasdhyap

Yep, this would do that. Your customized bcd file would give you multiple choices, selecting one would boot the corresponding boot.wim from \Sources on your boot media.

But I still don't think you are going to be able to run a media build from an external hard drive.

Forefront Client Security and Faronics DeepFreeze

Hi All,

I work for a technical college that has about 1500 lab computers where we use a product called DeepFreeze to keep the machines in a consistent state. We are in the process of implementing Microsoft Forefront Client Security and ran into a snag. DeepFreeze runs a maintenance cycle (during which time changes to the hard drive stick) once a week in which the DF client runs Windows Updates during that time frame. We have Forefront Definitions being sent out via WSUS with the expectation that these lab machines would get the updated definitions during the DeepFreeze maintenance cycle. Unfortunately the Forefront Def Updates are not being installed. WindowsUpdates.log shows no applicable updates are being found. Faronics tells me that DeepFreeze will only install approved critical updates, and they believe the Forefront Def Updates are not being classified as "Critical," thus not being installed.

I'm curious if anyone else is using DeepFreeze and Microsoft Forefront and how you are currently handling your environment.

Also, if someone knows what Forefront Def Updates are actually classified as in WSUS, that would be helpful too.

Thanks,

What I would probably recommend is scheduling a signature update to happen at this 1 hour maintenance time.  You can use the mpcmdrun signatureupdate command to do this and create a scheduled task for it.  Check this post out http://blogs.technet.com/kfalde/archive/2008/10/23/how-to-add-extra-scheduled-scans-or-definition-updates-for-fcs.aspx for some ideas.  That or you could via FCS policies do something like schedule a quick scan right at that time and define in policy that clients update signature when scans are performed.

Hi Justin,

Also running Deepfreeze and FCS here (also at a college), did you manage to find a work around for getting the Forefront updates on during maintenance periods?

Hi Rob-M,

I forgot about this thread...
Yes, we did come up with a solution to our def updating problem. We switched from using the "Windows Update" option during maintenance to the "Run Batch File" during maintenance. I created a batch file that runs a gpupdate /force, creates a "Big Red Button" VBscript, runs the script, then deletes it. I modified a VBscript I found (http://redmondmag.com/Articles/2007/09/01/Whassup-with-WSUS.aspx?Page=2) which didn't work right out the box. The VBscript checks for, downloads, and installs any approved Windows Updates from the assigned Windows Update source, which we assign our WSUS server via Group Policy. The script then reboots the workstation if any of the updates it installed require a reboot. I don't like using "On Error Resume Next" in my VBscripts, but the script would fail at the "objAutomaticUpdates.DetectNow" line on random machines. The "On Error Resume Next" allows the script to continue even if that command fails. I put the gpupdate /force at the beginning so that any GP changes that were made will get "stuck" while the machines are thawed. Also it would be required if the WSUS server(s) changed...

The modified vbs file that the batch script creates, runs, then deletes is a s follows:

'==========================================================================  '  ' SCRIPT NAME: DFWSUSUpdates.vbs  ' DISCRIPTION: Checks for, downloads, and installs Windows Updates from WSUS  '  ' AUTHOR: Justin Jahns  ' DATE: 6/2/2010  '  ' Source: http://redmondmag.com/Articles/2007/09/01/Whassup-with-WSUS.aspx?Page=2  '  '==========================================================================  On Error Resume Next    Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")  Set objAutomaticUpdates = CreateObject("Microsoft.Update.AutoUpdate")  objAutomaticUpdates.EnableService  objAutomaticUpdates.DetectNow    Set objSession = CreateObject("Microsoft.Update.Session")  Set objSearcher = objSession.CreateUpdateSearcher()  Set objResults = objSearcher.Search("IsInstalled=0 and Type='Software'")  Set colUpdates = objResults.Updates    Set objUpdatesToDownload = CreateObject("Microsoft.Update.UpdateColl")  intUpdateCount = 0  For i = 0 to colUpdates.Count - 1   intUpdateCount = intUpdateCount + 1   Set objUpdate = colUpdates.Item(i)   objUpdatesToDownload.Add(objUpdate)  Next    If intUpdateCount = 0 Then   WScript.Quit  Else   Set objDownloader = objSession.CreateUpdateDownloader()   objDownloader.Updates = objUpdatesToDownload   objDownloader.Download()     Set objInstaller = objSession.CreateUpdateInstaller()   objInstaller.Updates = objUpdatesToDownload   Set installationResult = objInstaller.Install()     Set objSysInfo = CreateObject("Microsoft.Update.SystemInfo")   If objSysInfo.RebootRequired Then   Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate,(Shutdown)}!\\localhost\root\cimv2")   Set colOperatingSystems = objWMIService.ExecQuery("Select * from Win32_OperatingSystem")   For Each objOperatingSystem in colOperatingSystems   objOperatingSystem.Reboot()   Next   End If  End If

The complete batch file that I use is as follows:

Also, If you looking for a way to manually install WSUS updates on machines (not related to DF) take a look at my posting entitled "WSUS "Big Red Button" VBScript Not Working" (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverwsus/thread/b1452d6b-4925-48c4-9113-d2c71bbf07db)

I hope these come in handy for someone :)

Have you guys had any difficulty with this problem?

We run DeepFreeze in our labs as well.  Today we booted in Thawed mode so we could run system updates.  After the updates the computers prompted us to Restart.  We did.

Now we are in an endless loop where DeepFreeze re-froze itself but "Windows 7 Service Pack 1" is installing -- and after it installs "Stage 1 of 2" it restarts... and installs "Stage 1 of 2"... then installs "Stage 1 of 2"... then installs "Stage 1 of 2"... then (etc.).

We can't get it to run in thawed mode to complete the install and we also can't get the Service Pack to cancel because Deep Freeze keeps resetting anything we change.

I'm at a loss here, but we have students coming in tomorrow morning for computer science courses... and we will be without computers.  :/

ANY help is appreciated.

Robert

When you thawed your lab(s), I'm assuming you choose the "Boot Thawed on Next 1 Restarts" option.
We never use this option for this exact reason... You never know what applications/updates/setting changes will need a restart, or even multiple restarts as in the case with Windows 7 SP1.

The only thing I could guess is trying to boot into safe mode (pressing F8 right before Windows boots)... Thawing the machines from there.

Otherwise your going to need to contact Faronics to see if their is a way to disable DF before Windows boots.

Good Luck!

Hey There,

did you find a way out of this deadlock? I have exactly the same problem. Update Loop...Rebooting and Updating Registry before Windows comes finally up. Using DeepFreeze with Windows 7and now I cannot go into Thawed Mode.

If you'd come back and tell me what you did it would be highly appreciated

This may be posted elsewhere but this is what we did when we had the above issues involving Windows Update, Windows 7 and DeepFreeze:

1. During boot press F8 to bring up Advanced Boot Options

2. Select 'Repair Your Computer'

3. Hit Next to select US Keyboard

4. Enter admin password

5. Open Command Prompt

6. Go to the Windows Partition (not the System Reserved one) , type the following into the command prompt

cd\windows\system32\drivers

ren DeepFrz.sys DeepFrz.sy_

exit

7. Restart

8. Allow computer to boot normally, will appear to run updates as before and will restart on its own

9. Allow computer to boot normally, this time it should reach the Windows 7 Enterprise screen and say 'Configuring Updates'

10. Eventually it will say 'Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to logon', however mouse and keyboard will be nonfunction

11. Press power button to shutdown PC

12. Repeat steps 1-5
13. Open Command Prompt, and type the following

cd\windows\system32\drivers

ren DeepFrz.sy_ DeepFrz.sys

exit

14. Restart

I have had the same problem. only clean way was to re-image the machine.

What is hapenping is that when a W7 Machine goes out and gets updates it normally takes a reboot to install them.  So what is happening is that.

A Machine is woken up at or just before a scheduled maintenance window (for us 1-4a)
Deep Freeze boots them into thaw mode.
The machine goes out and gets the updates from MS as well as the kms keys.
The machine then reboots to a frozen state.
here is the problem. Windows 7 wants to install the updates on the reboot (now you are in a Frozen state and the updates cannot take. I have had updates saying something like 2000 updates to be installed.
What needs to happened is that the machine needs to be rebooted a 2nd time to make sure that all updates are fully installed.  I chose to do all updates in my labs (about 450 computers total at 4 different sites across town up to 20 miles away.

I image my labs and the end of every semester or when new software comes in.

The problem here is how you know when to reboot the computer after updates.
If MS released a big update and one slipped thru you could possibly ruin the lab or labs.

Job security right?

Note that the script that I provided above automatically reboots the workstation if any of the updates it installed requires a reboot. Thus, this reboot happens while the workstation is still in the maintenance cycle (thawed). My script has been working flawlessly in our environment (~1500 lab computers) for several years now. In theory, the only time we would have a problem is when an update requires two reboots, which could be the case with a service pack, thus why we don't push service packs via WSUS.

Exchange 2010 and Lync 2010 kills Exchange 2010 UC Faxing feature?

I am doing some prep work on a request I received concerning fax support for Exchange. In my case they want to integrate Lync 2010 with the Exchange 2010 UC role but according to the statement below this will kill the fax feature.

"Fax services provided by the Exchange UM server are not available in Lync Server deployments that are integrated with Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 or Exchange Server 2010 with latest service pack."

So the only alternative for fax support through Exchange in cases like this is to go third-party? Is this the case with Lync 2013 as well or still to early to tell?

Furthermore I would love to hear from people that have experience with fax integration in regards to Exchange 2010 and Lync 2010 deployment landscapes.

Reply:
What exactly are you trying to do?  The only fax related thing Exchange 2010 UM can do is detect fax and then transfer the call to a 3rd party fax solution.

Reply:

Okay - went through the supporting documents as it is still a little bit unclear. So as you mentioned the only Fax support Exchange 2010 has is via certified Partners.

I was looking at Understanding Faxing in Unified Messaging but Spotlight on Exchange 2010: Receiving faxes using Exchange 2010 Unified Messaging basically makes it clear that incoming faxing (and outgoing faxing) cannot be maintained and configured in-house.

What I do not understand then is that the depiction below (is then completely misleading as I understood if a certified media gateway is in place it will be to handle incoming faxes and forward this to the respective mailbox directly (in case dedicated DID number or single voice/fax DID number). The sender fax from PSTN basically hits the UM IP gateway (e.g. Audiocodes Mediant 1000) and delivers (T.38) this to the Exchange UM role holder which in turns delivers it to the respective recipients mailbox.

Basically I wanted to find out, as to how far as possible without any 3rd party software/services, one can deal with incoming and outgoing faxes.

Reply:

Without using a 3rd party product it is not possible to do inbound faxing with Exchange 2010.  That picture is misleading and wish they did not have that on that web page.

Outbound faxing was never in the Exchange product so a 3rd party was always needed if that function was required.

But also to answer your original question, you should not be routing fax calls through Lync.

Filter MSDN per exam option

Here is an idea - it would be really nice to have a filter when browsing MSDN content online so that you are able to only view the stuff related to a particular exam. Some of the newer exams don't have books that you can buy and, in my experience, one of the books for an exam I sat did not cover all the topics properly. If we were able to just flick a switch in MSDN to target a particular exam, learning to become an MCPD (or whatever) would be a lot more focused. I currently find that, when learning directly from MSDN, I tend to wander outside the boundaries of the exam I am studying for and I find it difficult to gauge how much reading I have done, and what I still need to do. Thoughts?

Thanks.

weird thing in Sharepoint and excel macro-enable

Hi,

I have a document library on a Sharepoint 2007 server.

All the users from the visitors group  (home made permissions levels) have issues when opening xlsm excel files (excel 2007 files with macros), the thing is that when opening the file, a popup arrives and request edit or view, any of those choice give an other popup for authentication procedure. you can enter 100 times your credentials, the popup continue to request authentication. There's no error messages. if you hit cancel from the box, the file open, all drop-down feature are working, but I have no clue if the integrity of the file is ok.

If I grant one of those users as members, everything is ok.

I have not tested yet, but if I have the "add items"in List Permissions for the visitor permission level, it should solve the issue. But this level of permissions can't be set for those users for those files.

I want to understand why this happen, why this popup come out. And If there's a solution and/or workaround.

Thanks in advance for help.
