Windows 7 - 2 Fixes for problems i have fixed with W7. This will help alot of you out there with Black Screens
Issue #1. Problem was on a Fresh install of W7 Pro (in a domain only) after W7 is all set up and all functions / options work (ie screen saver etc) Now when the PC was set up (in a workgroup) the screen saver would work normally and take the password and function normally but once joined into a domain the screen saver would never kick in and lock the PC as it should. Changing power options had NC, recreate profile NC etc etc.
Here was the FIX and it worked 2X. If the PC's have ANY USB wireless devices like mice or keyboards etc. You must get the drivers from the manufacture (including Microsoft ones) even knowing when you plug in a wireless mouse and W7 installs it and it functions but the PC will not lock (so it is at the crtl+alt+del screen) get the wireless device drivers install them and all is good.
Issue #2. Problem was on Some laptops with W7 HomePrem, Pro etc When the laptop is put to hibernation (ie closing the lid so it goes to sleep) and upon resuming (ie pushing the power button or on some laptops just opening the lid) and the LCD looks black but really the backlight just never kicks in but the fans are running, HD light is blinking etc. Changing sleep options NC, BIOS options (C3 etc) NC, power options, Hybrid Options NC, BIOS update NC etc. (And yes I know SLEEP and hibernation are different) but some people out there reference to both as the same thing. A good way to test this issue is when the laptop was in hibernation and you try to wake it up and it seems to be running just plug in a CRT or lcd into the video port on the laptop and bang both displays work! and when you unplug the external monitor your laptop screen is normal once again check any and all USB devices.
Here was the FIX and it has worked many laptops. Again it has to do with USB devices again. When the laptop is put to hibernation (closing the lid) but upon pushing the power button or opening the lid the screen stays black or seems black but really the backlight is just not kicking in. If the person has a "thumb drive" "usb stick" etc what ever they ant to call them. DO NOT leave the thumb drive in the usb port and put the laptop into hibernation / sleep doing so will stop it from waking up. Wireless mice drivers help on some and external HD can cause the black screen issue also. *Plus keep one thing in mind removing a usb device when windows is doing it's hibernation/ going into hibernation thing DO NOT REMOVE it. Wait until the PC is off then remove the thumb drive.
I Know this will help a lot of people out there, the issue is some times a driver, or a device that is installed etc. It just is trial and error.
Thanks, and good luck Mike

High CPU utilization in all our VM guests due to hardware interrupts
Since we had a couple of BSODs 40 days ago (as soon as I setup the new server with Windows 2008 R2 x64) I applied Hotfix 975530.
I did everything I found in the internet e.g. tuning NIC, setting proc compatibilty etc. but nothing seems to fix it.
For no apparent reason CPU utilization in one of the VM's (All running Windows 2003 SP2 x86) is jumping high up to 100% and it could stay there for sometimes more that 20 minutes.
During this time it will affect all of my other VM's where the same effect happens. In all VM's hardware interrupts cosnume 1-20% of CPU even in idle mode.
Since I have setup all of my WEB Farm (and e-mail) infrastructure in Hyper-V I would appreciate any help on resolving this serious issue.

Help with OOB odc connection
Hello all, I have questions;
When Excel services is configured to use Secure Store and the unattended service account, do the .odc files in the trusted location inherit the correct connection string from the configuration settings? I cannot connect with any of the OOB .odc files, templates or sample reports in our test or production boxes. The were working and suddenly stopped? I get a message that the login failed. Our development box works fine.
Is the logical place to start troublshooting Excel Services? I only have central admin rights in the development environment but its working fine. I can't open the odc files in test or production to see the connection string? when the connection fails the connection properties are greyed out on the ribbon?
thanks for any guidance

gpo policy install isnt bringing settings down from all.xml template selection
I installed EMET via GPO policy and the file installs fine yet it still requires an adminstrator to go in after the installation and intitialize it. Do i need to include a "run as adminisrtator" in the script? As well it disregarded my policy choices and did not select the "All.xml" template options represented in group policy i selected.
I then also included a statup script and placed it in the GPO to run the emet_conf --refresh and it also appears to not be doing what it needs to do. I read teh user guide but it is a little ambigous with regards to this and i am not sure how i can get these two things to work on x64 Windwos 7 pro pc's on a Windows 2008R2 domain. pLease let me know what i am overlooking. thank you
Setting Delegates from Powershell or EMC doesnt stick, but From Outlook ok
It seems that when ever you set a resource room to forward all requests to a delegate, even though the settings are correct in the resource. IT never sends the email. When i tried this in Outlook i noticed the "send to delegate" button wasnt ticked, even though looking at the resourice on the EMC and EMS, there was a delegate set and send as was also set
So why in outlook would the "Forward to delegate" not be ticked and but when viewing on the EMC and EMS it was

Reference DN option is unhighlighted
Hi,
When I create a SQL Server management agent as HRMA then under the option configure columns I have set Anchor as "EmployeeId" attribute and I want to also give a Reference (DN) as "RMEmployeeId" attribute but under the columns when I select "RMEmployeeId" and click "Edit" then the Reference (DN) is not highlighted. I am not able to check this option. Under the object type "Person" is selected.
Snapshot is attached.

I'd seen that grayed out before but never paid attention. I checked a couple of my few SQL MAs and found that some had the checkbox available and others did not.
While I've not been able to find it documented explicitly, the pattern I've found is that the string attributes that can be marked as a reference are not being exported from, or imported to, string attributes in the metaverse. This makes sense because you cannot flow a string value to a reference value, or vice-versa.
If this is a reference value, make sure you don't have any flow rules defined for that attribute. If there are and you remove them, go back to the properties and see if the checkbox is available. If you change it though, you'll have to change the metaverse attribute you export to, or import from, to a reference-type attribute.

Using UDI to Join Domain
I'm using UDI within an SCCM task sequence and experience an error when it attempts to join the domain.
With UDI I pass the ComputerName/Domain/OU and Username/Password. The variables are stored and visible in the OSDSetupWizard.log and are OSDComputerName, OSDDomainName, OSDDomainOUName,OSDJoinAccount,OSDJoinPassword,OSDNetworkJoinType.
I have then populated my Join Domain or Workgroup task sequence setting with the correct variables using %variable%. I am using the default UDI task sequence that comes with MDT. Everytime it fails when attemping to join the domain.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

The default UDI task sequence doesn't contain a "Join Domain or Workgroup" step. Instead, the "Apply Network Settings" step would inject the necessary values into the unattend.xml to do the domain join. Did you customize the task sequence to add that step?

I think is best to ask in the VMware forums http://communities.vmware.com/community/ but just to answer to some of you questions:
Why not use ? VMware it's virtualization just like Hyper-V but based on Linux, off course it has a smaller foot print and some great features. By using virtualization, not just VMware you reduce the power consuming, heat, physical servers hardware and off course the time to deploy the OS or to add hardware to virtual machines.

Thsi is a technical forum and we will not debate the merits or minuses of competing hypervisors. If you have specific questions, they will be addressed strictly at a technical level.
This has been discussed at length, please use the search engine of your choice. You will find lots of passionate marketing materials from both sides.
Both platforms are type 1 hypervisors (ESX, Hyper-V). Both platforms run on the bare metal. Both support virutal machines.
Beyond that, their implementations and required supporting components are very different. Making an apples to apples feature comparison is very difficult because of the differences in architecture and implementation.

Then I open this Testing list in the InfoPath 2010 (Click Customize Form in the SharePoint Ribbon), and then modified the "edit form" then published back to the sever.
2. Create another new list for Testing, work fine and saved.
But when I try to edit the list it failed to load with the following error:

We found a similar error: http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/p/19856/68972.aspx#68972
But they're saying this could be a bug.

SSAS performance : Tuples Vs Members
Hey ,
I am trying to improve my cubes performance, and as a part of it I've checked the case of holding a fictive measure vs tuples..
A fictive measure is a "Null as FictiveMeasure" in the relevant MeasureGroup in the DSV, wich will get his own scope that would hold the tuple (RealMeasure, RealDim_Member) in the calculation section. As much as I know the olap storage engine (aggregations??) hold tuples. If so, why am I getting an improvment while using at the FictiveMeasure then using the simple form of a tuple (RealMeasure, RealDim_Member) . I thought it would bring back the same time .. What did I miss ??
Thanks from advance,
David .
Reply:
Hey again ,
Unfortunately, no answer or suggestion was poping up the last month , and again I don't understand another basic . As much as I know, best practice in the Calculation tag for creating a set of members that will be used a several time in the code, will be :
create set CURRENTCUBE.[TempSet]
As {[Dim A].[Att].&[1],[Dim A].[Att].&[2],[Dim A].[Att].&[3]}
So when I'd like to use the set of members in one of the calculations, it would look like :
Scope([Measures].[MyMeasure]);
this=Sum([TempSet],[Measures].[A]); end scope ;
The set of members is defined as static and not dynamic one . If so, what is the reason that I get faster results with this calculation :
Scope([Measures].[MyMeasure]);
this=Sum({[Dim A].[Att].&[1],[Dim A].[Att].&[2],[Dim A].[Att].&[3]},[Measures].[A]); end scope ;
I would appreciate any answer or idea .
Thanks ..

Hi David,
The performance of both should be identical, at least as far as I know. It really depends on how your measuring performance. SSAS will answer queries with results in cache if available so if you're looking at measuring performance only through time to complete, it's not going to be a good measure. To accurately determine performance, I'd recommend you use MDX Studio. https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=74f04d1ea28ece4e&id=74F04D1EA28ECE4E%21569#cid=74F04D1EA28ECE4E&id=74F04D1EA28ECE4E%21679 MDX Studio is also an excellent tool to use to learn and optimize queries.
The following webcast will give you a good overview of the tool.

Hi Martin ,
Thanks a lot for replying . It look like a very nice tool, I'll try to improve my code . Not only at the time aspect .
You are right, the both queries suppose to return results at the same time (my bad ..) but maybe you can give your opinion on my first post ??
Thanks again .
------------------------------------
Reply:
In response to the initial post, SSAS resolves queries in a fairly complex manner and I'm certainly not an authority. I'll do my best to explain using very simplicity terms rather than breaking it down into true reality. There are two principal components to the SSAS query parser, the Formula Engine and the Storage Engine. When an MDX query is evaluated, it's always evaluated by the Formula Engine. Each cell value has to be evaluated (Block Mode or Cell by Cell Mode). If data for that cell already exists in cache, the Formula Engine retrieves that value from memory and returns to the client. If not in cache, it has to get the data needed to evaluate from disk. Aggregations are disk storage where each aggregation can be compared to a data warehouse summary table used to address performance of the most commonly asked questions. (i.e might have a Sales Fact that has a transaction for each sales order line no but a Sales Summary Fact that only includes monthly summary data) If a question can be answered by retrieving data from a precalculated aggregation, the Storage Engine will retrieve that aggregation from disk (smaller disk footprint than leaf level data) and pull into memory. Otherwise, the question has to be answered with leaf level data. A calculated measure with a constant value would never rely on the Storage engine and would be faster. A NULL calculated column would seem to me, unless you're preserving NULL values in your measure should have the same performance as a regular measure. It would just be a regular measure that contained zeros for every source transaction.
