Windows 8 Video Driver for Toshiba Satellite L350D Laptop, ATI video GPU RS690M
I am the IT manager for a small library system, and am in the process of evaluating Windows 8. I have already deployed it on some patron facing computers that we use for training.
Win 8 seems to work well on all the computers that I have tried so far, except for:
Toshiba Satellite L350D Laptop, ATI video GPU RS690M. Additional information on the graphics is: ATI video, GPU RS690M, Device ID 1002-791F, AND Driver Autodetect 0x1002 - 0x791F PCI
The main issue is that the upgrade adviser said the graphics was supported, but when I upgraded, the only modes are 4:3 aspect ratio, which does not match the aspect ratio of the screen.
I have tried device manager => update driver, and searched the net, but finding nothing on this.
If there is no driver or other work around, that means that I am not going to be able to upgrade a quite a few machines.

I guess the lack of response here is a fairly good indicator of Microsoft's interest in support of older (but still capable) hardware with Win8.
Interesting that this graphics hardware is fully supported by UBUNTU, so how hard can it be?

Thanks for the advice.
I went to the Toshiba support site, and the latest 64 bit driver that I could find was Win 7.
I downloaded it, extracted it to t temp folder and went to Device manager,pointed to the folder and asked it to update the driver. It said that the latest driver was already installed.
I even tried to run the installer that was in the temp folder, it seemed to run and terminate normally, but the display did not change.
It did create a couple of folders: \\program files\ATI and \\program files\ATI Technologies with nothing but a couple of xml reports in them.
Any other ideas?

Looks like you're seeing what a lot of HP users get. However, HP has found a workaround for many otherwise "unsupported" cases
Also, one idea which is not explicitly mentioned there is that apparently the AMD Catalyst software sometimes needs to have .NET 3.5 installed in order to work properly. In fact, that might be a factor of your symptom. You would have to do some diagnosis to find out what is going on to be sure. FWIW I would use ProcMon on a recreation attempt to try to trace what all it is doing (e.g. besides writing the two files that you have found <w>).
Perhaps you can find a way to adapt those techniques to your Toshiba case?
BTW did you give us the right model information? FWIW I can find lots of L305D and some L350 but no L350D. Also no hits for RS690M on the Toshiba Support site. However, some of the L305D appear not to have the switchable graphics issue then in that case you may be able to adapt this user's technique...

Office 2010 on W7ES open online file takes very long
I have an embedded device running windows 7 embedded standard SP1, toghether with office (only excel) 2010 SP1. Both windows and excel have all available updates installed. Windows and office is 32bit.
When opening an online excel file (xls, 100kb, only tekst) , this takes +-60seconds.
On any other pc opening this online file takes 3 seconds.
When i place the file localy on the harddrive or on an network schare, this takes only 3 seconds.
Opening excel in safe mode gives the same result.
When i open notepad, and open the online file with notepad, it only takes a few seconds to load the file in notepad. As far as i can see the problem is somewhere in office itself and not windows, the network or the server.

I Just changed the registry and added the group policy acording to kb/829700 But without improvement.
We only have the problem when we open the file in excel. When i open the xls for example in notepad, it opens after a few seconds.
What is also noticed is that when i change internet explorer to "work offline", the file in excel opens after a few seconds. This is the same behaviour as having the file stored on a local drive.

As first i tested excel in safe mode, without success.
Next step i started windows in clean mode kb/331796 with all non windows services disabled, and started excel again in safe mode. When opening the file, the open time was still 30s.

Windows 8 Storage Spaces Parity add 3 drives complaint
I have some information about rebuilding parity volumes that I wasn't able to find online and wish to share.
When using Parity with 3 disks and approaching maximum storage we all seem to know that it asks for 3 more disks. Seeing as it takes 3 disks for a parity (for fake raid 5 as ive been calling it) its not surprising that it wants as it does NOT rebalance your data and thus is more or less creating another parity set.
This being said I had no issues rebalancing myself. If you do not ignore the "Running out of space message" until you are "out of space" then its simply a matter of adding your 4rth drive, and then copying your data to a temp folder, deleting the original and replacing it with the backup. YES I know this sucks, but it will load balance across all 4 drives starting from the moment you add the fourth, so doing this rebalances. I am doing it right now with 3TB of data and 4x2TB drives. Just added the fourth, making copies (right on the volume itself) and replacing the old copies with them.
You do NOT have to do this for ALL your data, just until you get your %'s around equal then future balancing when new files are added will take care of the rest.
Also you can do it right on the storage space itself as the new copy will be balanced, just gotta do it chunks to avoid running out of space. The copy takes a while because of slow write speeds on a raid5 type configuration, not to mention this is a software solution. However the delete and copy back is instant if you did it right on the storage pool, so if this needs to be done for a business and not just home use, you can accomplish this by copying then a quick resync to confirm you have everything up to date, without disrupting your clients for more then a minute. (or none if you want till 5:01pm)
The balancing actually works great, it got rid of my warning and the pool status is "OKay"
Final comments just because I am a bit annoyed. Many complaints floating around about storage spaces, I hate those complaints, "SLOW SPEEDS" faster then my 150 dollar personal use raid card. I hope others agree with me that it is a great feature but much like raid solutions does require an understanding of how it works to understand what to expect, YES ITS GOING TO WRITE SLOW, think about how many copies of each file it is writting, not to mention the overhead of deciding WHERE this stuff is going to be copied to. I was PRO FEDORA LINUX, windows 7 made me a tolerant person, windows 8 made me a believer.
P.S ... goes without saying microsoft needs a rebalancing tool, preferably one that runs in the lowest priority so the volume remains functioning.

Hi, I installed the final version of Windows 8 as a fresh install. Created a storage space with 4 identical 3TB drives using Parity scheme. Created the volume D and started a copy of about 6TB of my data. When I woke up in the morning I saw this: http://imgur.com/YY5su
No way to view my files, just format or delete. Question: Is my data lost?
In storage management he volume appear as un-allocated un-initialized volume. I installed software to the volume as well as moved tons of data so the volume did exist.
The disks appear fine and at 80%. I slepet through the warning, what do I do now?

So every time I add a disk to my pool. I need to copy my data from my virtual disk, to the virtual disk then it rebalanced ?
So that will say, if i got 3 x 2 TB disks (6~TB pool). Then to be sure i got enough space to copy from the drive to the drive. (For rebalancing) Then I need to add a new 2 TB, Before I reach 4 TB used ? So I got 4 TB used and 4 TB not used to copy to. ?

I am receiving the following ERROR MESSAGE;
"You have unsent messages in your Outbox. Do You want to send now? Yes No."
After pressing Yes and reloading and shutting down many times in Windows 7 (32 bit) Windows Live Mail. I now have three unsent messages and unable to access or delete them. The error message keeps coming back. I have looked on-line for a solution and find that most answers are for Windows Mail and Windows Vista.

I think you are encountered the message stuck in Outbox folder issue.
You can try this:
- Work offline, move the stuck mail into another folder. Restart Outlook and Work online to send it again.
- Temporarily uninstall or disable firewall and antivirus software.
- Test in Outlook safe mode.
- Create a new profile to test it.

Yes, most Windows 7 drivers will be work in Windows 8. Try to install the old version for test.

In order to find out what caused the problem you need to write down or remember the search term it presents you with. The two search terms I have seen suggested so far are
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED.
While it's nice not to have to look at a blue screen full of text, the previous BSOD was more informative than the Windows 8 BSOD, since it contained a detailed error code (information for diagnostic purposes that was collected as the operating system performed a bug check), which could get you closer to tracking down the root of the problem.

Sending email to hotmail ends up in Junk
Hi to everybody,
I have a real problem with emails arriving to hotmail / live accounts. Everywhere else, emails are delivered in their inbox folders (google, yahoo, customer exchange setups etc), but whenever an email is sent to hotmail account it ends up in junk folder.
I have tested this with several hotmail accounts, some of them completely new, and some already active for some time, but same result everywhere.
Just to note that the emails I'm sending are marked with spf=pass and dkim=pass
below is a portion of the email header.

External network shows as internal network
I'm seeing some rather odd TMG behaviour:
I have a TMG 2010 Server 2008 R2 Server with 4 nics
Nic 1 - internal 172.16.10.10/29
Nic 2 - external 172.16.10.6/29
Nic3 - dmz 1 192.168.10.5/128
Nic4 - dmz 2 192.168.10.130/128
Binding order - Internal Nic, DMzs, then External at the bottom
On the internal network range I've defined subnet 10.10.0.0 to 10.10.255.255 as being an internal network
The route relationships I've configured are
internal to external- NAT
external to internal - NAT
Everything else is set to route
I'm trying to connect from localhost (TMG server) to internal on 443 on server 10.10.20.22, the connection sometimes works, however at other times it fails. I have an issue where the event log shows
src: localhost
destination:internal 443
status: Operation completed successfully
At other times it shows:
src:localhost
destination:external 443
status:access denied
For some reason the network that is registered on the internal address range shows as external.
I don't know why 10.10.20.20 would show as external and internal within the space of 4 minutes. When I do manage to connect, after a while the HTTPs connection will drop out with an access denied displayed in the log viewer.
One thing that is an issue is that the DC is down at the moment, TMG is a domain member. Would lack of connectivity cause this sort of quirky behaviour? The whole kit is offsite and I'm trying to resovle remotely...

"The route relationships I've configured are internal to external- NAT external to internal - NAT" - A NAT relationship is unidirectional, route relationship is bidirectional. You may create NAT network rule from internal to external.

Very specific to your query, the answer is yes.
For further information snippet from Tail-Log Backups, tail-log backup in the following scenarios:
-
If the database is online and you plan to perform a restore operation on the database, begin by backing up the tail of the log. To avoid an error for an online database, you must use the … WITH NORECOVERY option of the BACKUP Transact-SQL statement.

If a database is offline and fails to start and you need to restore the database, first back up the tail of the log. Because no transactions can occur at this time, using the WITH NORECOVERY is optional.

If a database is damaged, try to take a tail-log backup by using the WITH CONTINUE_AFTER_ERROR option of the BACKUP statement.
On a damaged database backing up the tail of the log can succeed only if the log files are undamaged, the database is in a state that supports tail-log backups, and the database does not contain any bulk-logged changes. If a tail-log backup cannot be created, any transactions committed after the latest log backup are lost.

Disovery Broken
Hi,
After WMF3 giving me some issues i have written a script that will uninstall it then uninstall the SCCM 2012 client. The idea was that SCCM would them pickup the machine has no client installed then reinstall it. The issue is SCCM isn't pickup the devices have no client installed. I have enabled heartbeat discovery.
Any ideas please?

That's not how discovery works. Here's a couple of items to take note of:
- Uninstalling the ConfigMgr Client Agent is not communicated to the server in any way. There is a maintenance task, called Clear Client Install Flag (or something like that) that will reset the client's installation status on the server if the client hasn't performed a heartbeat discovery in a certain period (by default it' 7 day but is not enabled).
- Heartbeat discovery is a client activity -- basically a "Yes, I'm alive" message to the server with some additional details: http://blog.configmgrftw.com/?p=139 . No client = no heartbeat.
Your best option at this point may be to enable the maintenance task mentioned above. You can also just reinitiate a manual client push or use a startup script.

Partitioned Data does not appear to be flowing to eh Partition
After creating a partition that writes all "archived" data (meaning, the bit in the archived column is 1) to the SAN, I do not see that there is any change in the initial size of the SAN.ndf despite it having grown by about 2 GIG. I suspect the key here is to trick the table into knowing the partition exists. I have created the partition as:

Mailbox Server Role Calculator - SPECInt Rate
Hi,
I'm having difficulty on planning new servers with Mailbox Server Role Calculator. I don't have the hardware yet so I can't populate the SPECint2006 Rate Value. I'm using the calculator to give me all the recommended hardware configuration but without this value I can't have an idea of what is the best hardware for me. What can I do in this case? Is there any default value to help me?

I'm a consulting and usually I have to calculate all hardware that my customers needs to start a migration process. In many cases they have to buy new hardware.. So I have to calculate for them. In one of them they want to virtuallize all servers and we have 12.000 mailboxes to migrate. The hardware used is a Dell R710 and this is not a good hardware to this environment since after I populate all information on calculator sheet it tells me that I will have problems with CPU utilization (149%). So, I need to estimate a new hardware for this...

How to install windows 8 apps offline using data in another pc

I have two PCs running Windows 8 WMC. I have a limited and low-speed internet connection so when installing apps it takes twice the amount of data and time from my internet connection. So, is there a way to install apps using the data in the WindowsApps folder in the other PC.
