So far so good. In my tests just now I had a few long waits, but was never redirected to the "Edit My Profile" dialog. My guess is that a timeout was increased or eliminated, but the long wait is better than the redirection. After waiting awhile, I can click "Stop" and repeat what I did. The second attempt is generally faster. When I'm redirected I often must repeat the search that led me to the article, which can involve several more page refreshes (and chances for redirection).

Since my last reply in this thread I made 15 edits to Wiki articles. I did not get redirected to the "Edit My Profile" page even once. The effort was much easier. I also noticed that the activities show in my profile, which was not always the case in the past.
So far I would say fix has helped a great deal.

I'm trying to copy an existing access rule and paste it as a new rule for a new user, but Forefront TMG keeps erroring out with 0x80070002
Mind you, copy-pasting a rule ALWAYS worked before and haven't had any issues until now.
Also, when I try creating the rule from scratch, it will error out with the same code.

If you are upgrade to Windows 8 and you copied the install image in a DVD or USB device, i would like to suggest you unzip the image to your D: partition, and launch the install process setup.exe.
How about run a "repair"/In-place upgrade in Windows 7 recovery console and then try to upgrade to Windows 8 again?

Signatures and Other Extraneous Text
In general I like the design of the MSDN forum UI but one thing I believe will make them more useful and less cluttered is some way to remove signatures and other extraneous text that some users add to the space for discussions. There are two aspects to this. One is providing some way for a consumer like me to turn off this extraneous text. The other is related to creating an etiquette where users do not put in such text into the space reserved for discussions and answers.
This has been discussed before but since the thread is very old I thought I would start a new one.
I don't want to pick on anyone in particular because this is a pretty common thing. However, this thread I recently started provides the perfect example of what I think is clutter and uncalled for.
One of the Microsoft representatives has a huge signature, with a picture and flashing text. Interestingly the same user does not have a picture as a part of their profile. I find this very puzzling.
There are plenty of ways in which users can highlight their status and accomplishments, if that is what most people use signatures for. I don't believe they should be using the space provided for the discussion to do this. If they feel that the provided methods are not adequate they should surface their requests on this forum so the MSDN team can consider them.
The intent of this thread is not to offend anyone. My wish is that we can improve the forums to make them even more useful.

A signature with flashing sounds obnoxious.
Maybe a limit of 4 lines or 200 characters of plain text (or links) would be be sufficient to say what needs saying or to point to a page with more.

I just had a moment right before, that someone thought I'm not answering his question and wasting his time with my answer and warned me to report me as spammer/abuser if I do it again. That guy found a bug with text formatting and wanted to have some font style changing options for colour, size, etc. and also wanted to be able to add .jpg images. So I just wrote "use html to change fonts etc." (not original copy/pasted but comes close). In my opinion, this is a workaround for part of his question, what I told him right after.

Noticed 2 UI Oddities Today
Just an FYI in case the mods are taking feedback.
1. Windows Store Search (search Charm with the Store as the active App): Here, search behaves differently from when activated from the Start Screen or Desktop. For example, with Desktop search, type netflix and I get the NetFlix App in the big area and the Apps Category counter keeps up eventually showing 1.
In App Store Search, type NetFlix, the Apps Category counter does not reflect the count until clicked.
It's not a matter of what's displayed in the results area since in Desktop Search, Settings and Files counts keep up even when not displayed.
Also, the results under Recommendations and the second group (Apps) are indistinguishable so it's not really clear that one leads to the App Store content and the other opens the already installed App.
2. With no Modern Apps running the Start Screen Desktop preview (upper left) has a close option that appears to have no affect. With one Modern App running, it may or may not remove the Desktop 'App' from the running list (sorry, I haven't figured out exactly what scenario results in which behavior). With multiple Modern Apps running, Close Desktop on the running Apps list and it's gone for good.

If you are referring to resource usage on the RMX for audio and video streams, then check the latest RMX Release Notes:
Audio calls will use 1 resources and video calls will use between 1, 1.5, and 3 resources depending on the maximum RTV resolution supported in the specific call (1 for CIF, 1.5 for VGA, or 3 for 720p).

Feedback: Can we please have Metro apps show up in the taskbar?
As a desktop user, I really don't like having to look in two places to switch between Metro apps and desktop apps.
Both the desktop apps and the metro apps show up in the alt+tab menu. So why don't Metro apps show up in the taskbar?
Adding Metro apps to the taskbar wouldn't affect usability on WinRT machines, and it would easily add to desktops. If we want to close them (which we probably would more often than in on a WinRT machine), we'd have a lot of options to do so -- so that shouldn't be a concern.
Without it, there's no way to know when I receive a message in the Messaging app unless I look at the Start screen.

The notifications show up for something like 4. Since Vista they've made it so that they show up when you're most likely on the computer, but the problem is that you might be working on something while the notifications pop up, and you might not notice them or you might forget to check.
Anyway, just snap the messaging apps to get instant messaging all the time.
That's a complete waste of space. What if I want to have my email up too? What if I want to watch a movie? What if I'm working, and I don't want the thing showing up in my face all the time?
Even on a busy taskbar, you're still going to have 6-7 empty spaces -- and it takes no additional space for them to blink orange.

I agree. I think that this small change would alleviate a lot of the concerns around the web (and in reviews) about the "clunkiness" and abrupt change that happens between metro and the desktop. At least this way, one hand knows what the other is doing.
------------------------------------
Reply:
Not only do I agree, but frankly I should have the option to show the task bar at all times. In metro apps, in the desktop, on the start screen, everywhere.
Mousing over and hovering in the corner, and then selecting an app out of a list of screenshots is a ton of friction. The task bar solved the problem of task switching so elegantly with one click. So elegantly in fact that all major browsers, including IE 10 use tabs, which is basically the same exact thing as a task bar.
I see no reason why that needed to be thrown away.

I agree. A lot of people got upset about the missing start menu, but the function of the start menu isn't missing. We simply got a new (and in my opinion beautifully designed) way of accessing programs. In contrast, due to the missing integration of metro apps in the task bar, we have lost something: the possibility of seeing all our programs in one place.

Hi,
When did this issue occurred? If recently, please try to perform a system restore to see how it works.
If the issue persists, you can choose go to safe mode with networking.
Also, temporarily disable all the third party security programs and boot in Clean Boot to test the issue.
If the everything is fine in clean boot mode, please take the step 2-step 7 in Clean Boot to determine which program or service maybe causing the issue.

Strange protocol direction problem
We have several TMG servers installed accross our network which are all used for simlar revers proxy solutions.
We have just installed 4 x new virtual (this is the first time we have used Virtuals) VMware servers which seem to define all the incoming traffic as an outbound protocol.
For this senario I need to reverse proxy a non-web protocol which we have done in the past. on our current working proxy setup if we run a telnet to the public facing IP it will be defined as the user defined 443 inbound protocol. However on our new proxy, the protocol gets automaticly defined as HTTPS (443 outbound). I have checked the packets using wireshark and I cant see how the packets are getting defined like this? the setup is nearly identical as the working solution yet we have the exact problem on all 4 VMs.
The VMs just have 1 hardware FW device above them and thats it. Nothing is interfering with the headers of the incoming data. Alll AV is switched off.
Has anyone else had this issue?

MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly.
Whenever I run the Event Viewer, the Task Scheduler, or Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, I receive the ff. error message.
MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly.
followed by the CLSID.
Also, some programs that require .NET Framework v2.0.50727 in Framework64 don't run.
I tried DotNETFx Cleanup to remove and reinstall everything, renamed the machine.config files to .old (and also made a copy of the default configs and used them) for both System32 and SysWOW64, used a new account, and used safe mode and the problems remained.
I did a repair install and reports no errors. The problems remain.
I also ran DotNETFx Cleanup tool to remove everything, then let Windows update install the latest .NET Framework with security updates, but no go.
I re-ran sfc /scannow and it still reported no errors.
I'd like to do a system recovery but the only system image I have was made yesterday, which means it might contain the same problems.
I made a system image of the hard drive so that at least all of the data is backed up, but if I can't fix this, I will have to do a clean install, which I'd like to avoid.
I don't know if this is a good guess, but if sfc /scannow reports no errors, and given a repair install, then there aren't any corrupt files. And given the clean-up tool and Windows Update, then .NET Framework is running correctly. Does this mean that the problem lies with registry settings?

Hi,
The very important thing you didn't mention at the thread is that what's the edition of your operation system? Windows XP, Windows Server or Windows 7?
If you get this error message under Windows XP. Please check the issue referring to the methods in the following Knowledge Base article:
Error message when you try to open some MMC 3.0 snap-ins in a localized version of Windows XP Service Pack 3: "MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly."
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957502
if the issue occurred under Windows Server, please check the issue refers to the below link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2486109
In addition, please take a look at the following link. Also, if you install .NET 3.5 does it correct the issue?http://blogs.technet.com/b/asiasupp/archive/2011/03/11/mmc-could-not-create-the-snap-in-18ea3f92-d6aa-41d9-a205-2023400c8fbb.aspx
If the issue happened under Windows 7 or Windows Vista, I would like suggest you try the following steps:
Step 1: To turn on the Microsoft .net Framework, do the following:
a. Click start-Control Panel > Programs and Features.
b. Click Turn Windows features on or off.
c. Now select "Microsoft .net Framework x.x.x"(currently edition). You have to expand each component and check the ones you want.
d. Restart the computer and check if the issue is fixed.
Step 2: You may run the system file checker tool once again. It might fix the issue.
Let us know the error message you got when running the system file checker tool before.
Check the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 "How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7"
Finally, please search if there is a file named "mmc.exe.config", delete it if it exists

Icons from startup application not always showing in systray
Hello,
The title says most of it. To make things more specific, I have 2 custom tasks for Procexp and StrokeIt, that run on startup with elevated privileges. I even tried running them with as much delay as 30 seconds, but their icons do not always show up in the systray. Stopping the task and re-launching it does not always solve the situation. In procexp (runs with /t /e arguments), Exiting the app from File>Exit, then relaunching the task almost always makes the icon visible in the toolbar.
This is NOT a "Show hidden icons" problem, or "Customize" issue. The settings are correct. The icons are just absent.
My Windows is a CLEAN&NEW installation of Windows 7 x64 SP1 Ultimate (fully updated), on a Lenovo G570 Sandy Bridge Pentium dualcore, with 4 GB of RAM.

Sometimes that would fix the issue. But only until the next reboot. I have also asked this question here, and again the solution from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945011 worked, but at the next reboot, some icons were again missing. All in all, very irritating, especially when I miss Lenovo's energy management app or procexp's icons.
I noticed that a log off/log on fixes the issue. I have also read about the issue on the web, seems that people created a patcher tool, which I'd rather not use. Take a look at this:
...this is caused by a timing defect in the Windows function Shell_NotifyIcon in shell32.dll, which has a timeout fixed at 4 seconds. Combined with an unfavorable Windows API message this causes the problem, which befalls many heavily loaded computers that don't have ultra-fast hard disks. Changing the timeout to one minute and removing the unwanted message solves the problem, and ... user depassp has perfected the procedure of patching shell32.dll to solve the problem, at least until a new version of that DLL is delivered by Microsoft that re-introduces the problem and requires another patch session. Unfortunately patching a system DLL is not an entirely simple procedure and can only be done with a certain minimum of computer handling experience, but this is the best we can offer for now.

Any permanent fix for the problem, please?
Thanks!

Installed FEP on domain network, now getting tons of "Temp" profiles
Hello,
We finally made the transition from the old Forefront security client to FEP 2010, and within a few months will be migrating to EP from SCCM 2012. We deployed FEP 2010 last Tuesday, since then we are getting reports of people getting logged into temp profiles. I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this same behavior and how to fix it.
So far only Windows XP computers are having problems. Thoughts?

Windows 7 and WEP networks
Today I had to deal with a message that basically amounted to "Sorry, Windows 7 won't automatically connect you to a WEP secured network, because we believe it's not good for you".
1. Clearly whoever decided this was a good feature is an imbecile.
2. Windows 7 connects perfectly well to open networks. Hypocrisy at its best.

Hello,
FYI, 104 bit WEP can be cracked in as little as 2 minutes. I personally recommend you change the access popint from WEP to WPA2.

The reason you can connect to open is because many hot spots use open connections, then guide you to a secure login page for account validation. Makes things easy.
It's Not hipocrisy. Imbeciles do not code. It's people trying to close a weak point that hackers exploit to surf anonymously: open or weak wireless Internet access. They are protecting you from a knock at the door by Police or FBI because someone committed a cybercrime using your wireless Internet.

load balancing SharePoint with DNS round robin
testing load balancing SharePoint with DNS round robin. find some good article on the confusing DNS setting. Has anything changed in Win8?
(from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc978179.aspx)
By default, Register this connection's address in DNS is selected and Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration is not selected, causing the client to request that the client register the A resource record and the server register the PTR resource record. In this case, the name to be used in DNS registration is a concatenation of the computer name and primary DNS suffix of the computer.
You can also select the check box Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration. If you choose this option, the client requests that the server update the PTR record, using the name that is a concatenation of the computer name and the connection-specific DNS suffix. If the DHCP server is configured to register DNS records according to the client's request, the client will then register the following records:
-
The PTR record, using the name that is a concatenation of the computer name and the primary DNS suffix.
-
The A record, using the name that is a concatenation of the computer name and the primary DNS suffix.
-
The A record, using the name that is a concatenation of the computer name and the connection-specific DNS suffix.
And http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240943
IPConfig /flushdns and IPConfig /registerdns is useful during testing the configuration.

HP Spectre Windows 8 ALT+ Numlock Problem
Sorry guys I first time using this forum, and the relevant topic area was locked for new post, I have a problem that need your help.
My newly bought this HP Ultrabook and found out there's no numpad available.
So I just use OSK (on screen keyboard) to enable NUMLOCK.
But the problem is when I want to type degree Celcius (ALT+0176) in Microsoft Word 2010, when I press/ hold ALT button, the top menu was underlined (some with 1,2,3 and some with ABCD) for function selection; and I cannot type out this special character.
However, when use only OSK, I am able to use ALT+1, ALT+2... but not able to use ALT+'more than single number'.
Please help. Thanks alot.
Best regards,
liokmin

Hi Parag,
did you check the tasks data or the assignment data in the database? The Alerts show assignment data (even if the options always say "tasks start"...

We did have some fixes in mid 2011 for similar problems Parag, but as you are patched to Dec CU you should have all these. If the notification says 0% then I'd suggest following Ben and Christoph's guidance and looking at the assignment.
Best regards,
Brian.
