Windows Live Movie Maker - no audio!

Windows Live Movie Maker - no audio!

Hi,

I am having trouble with Windows Live Movie Maker on Windows 7. The music files (mp3 and wmv) that I import will not play if the project has been saved - they will only play the first time I use a project. I've searched extensively online and found a few suggestions saying turn off the video filters - but I cannot find where to do this in Live movie maker. When I try the alt key to find a menu bar and tools area, all I get are weird little buttons with letters and numbers that do not do anything. :(

So if anyone can tell me either how to find the menu bar and turn off the video filters, or give me another solution, I would be very grateful. Thank you for your time.

Please note: I am using Live movie maker, not the older version where the tools are readily available.

You can add any windows group like domain users to your "site visitors" SharePoint group.

does everyone in your case mean authenticated users or authenticated and anonymous users?

so depending your answer it will be adding NT Authority\Authenticated Users to the site visitors group or enable anonymous access for the site collection.

Windows Embedded 7 and Group Policy Preferences - Error 8194

We are deploying Windows Embedded 7 Standard using IGEL thin clients. We have joined them to our domain, and are configuring using Group Policy.

I would say about half the time the thin client comes up without all policies applied. At this time, it looks like the policies failing are group policy preferences.

The event logs contain errors like this for each failing type of preference:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        Group Policy Internet Settings
Date:          7/31/2012 10:47:09 AM
Event ID:      8194
Task Category: (2)
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          SYSTEM
Computer:      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Description:
The client-side extension could not apply user policy settings for '[999] PREFS - All ThinClients - Internet Explorer Settings {A54425D5-56FD-4973-9A81-04C2BCA18AFA}' because it failed with error code '0x80070070 There is not enough space on the disk.' See trace file for more details.

The thin client doesn't have any drives that are full... and except for a couple image files totaling less than 300kb, we are simply setting GPO settings...

I've been banging my head trying to figure out how to correct this... Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

Red X in bottom left hand corner. No audio device connected/No speakers or headphones are plugged in.

Hi guys. Need some help. I got new pc speakers yesterday, pioneer USB, they are plug and play. When I plug them in my pc doesn't recognize them. I checked BIOS to make sure my internal sound was on. It is. I was using a USB headphone before this, it still works fine, but my pc is not letting me change my default device, and not recognizing my speakers.

Connect with Sharepoint Workspace to Sharepoint Foundation 2010 behind TMG

Hello,

I publishes a sharepoint Foundation installation with TMG via the "Sharepoint Site Publishing Rule" and I can connect to the site via the rule, after I authenticated on a Forefront threat management gateway.

Now I tried to connect via the "sharepoint workspace 2010 and I always get an error that the location could not be interpreted and that I should check the url.

How can I configure the TMG that the connection will work?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thank you for the post.

“Now I tried to connect via the "sharepoint workspace 2010 and I always get an error that the location could not be interpreted and that I should check the url.” – would you please elaborate the error message? If you access the site from internal, does it work?

Hello,

Is this problem so unique that I am the only one who fetchs this one?

I have no idea what to do. It works, if I try to connect from internal (via browser and workspace); from external it only works via browser access but not via workspace.

The TMG logging provides both (connecting via browser from external as well as connecting via workspace from external) the same headers from the request. But one is working, the other not.

I am using the following settings in the TMG:

Rule applies to published site: SharePoint

copmputer name: wi-sharepoint.FQDN.at

Request appear to come from the Forefront TMG computer

Forward the original hostheader

Listener : https; 8443

Public name (changed): wi-external URL.at

Authentication: NTLM auth.

Bridging: Redirect to HTTP: port 80

The log from the TMG:

SourceExternal: 80.081.215.166:4881 (changed)

Destination: Lcoal Host (192.168.50:80)

Request: GET :http://wi-external URL.at

The settings of the AAM are:

internal:                                                         external

http://wi-sharepoint                                       http://wi-sharepoint

http://wi-sharepoint.FQDN.at                 http://wi-externalURL.at

http://wi-externalURL.at                       http://wi-external URL.at

hope to get some help

thx,

Florian

Additional Information:

I found out, that I get an Status: 500 INternal Server Error message by connecting via the workspace application by the request:

POST http://wi-externalURL.at/_vti_bin/Webs.asmx

I tried to connect this url via the browser directly and it worked. but it seams, that the workspace call has some problem.

Is this because of a redirect from https (from the client to the TMG) to an http connection (behind the TMG)?

Additional Information:
I found the problem, but I do not know how to resolve it:

I traced the reuqests done by the workspace via wireshark and saw that the request from the /_vti_bin/Web.asmx works on the first call, but the second call gets an 500 error.

The second requests passes a url to the webservice and this url is the external url but with https instead of http.

https://wi-externalURL.at instead of http://wi-externalURL.at

the https url is the url which I use to call from outside, but the TMG rule changes the headers to http://wi-externalURL.at

so I added this url in the AAM

the webservice call than could not find the https://.. url and sends an error message (seen with wireshark):

<errorstring> The web application at https://... could not be found. Verify that you have...</errorstring>

Is there a possibility to configure the TMG rule that the original hostheader is used (also the original protocoll)?

Hello,

thank you for your answer!

I listen to the external port on https, but after the TMG http is used. So i thought I have to set the AAM with http.

Is that right?

Hi,

I tested that situation in lab and as i saw AAM not necessarily set with external name. Enough set with name which TMG requests.

Just found a blogpost about AAM settings. Could you check the ULS log for URLs that are requested, but that are not part of the current AAM settings?

Hi.

I think that could be because TMG bad translate some headers (as i research bad symbol is "/"). If TMG configure manually to translate "http:" to "https:" and "server:80" to "server:443" (for 80 and 443 it doesn't neccessary, but for other ports neccessary!) all working well. But no one answered my question, than i can't guess for any other reasons

Split for format

To make it even better, we can add a macro button beside with the table, and assign the following code to it:

 SyncDropDownList 1, True, wdSortFieldAlphanumeric, wdSortOrderAscending

Then, we can update all the list by click the button after you have added new web sites.

Unidentified Network, No Internet Access In Windows 2008 R2 Server

I am using windows 2008 server R2 Enterprise_x64 bit OS installed.I am facing a strange issue like unidentified network & no internet access in windows 2008 r2 which worked fine till last night. And tried in all the ways by changing the patch cord and even tried assigning different IP's which did not work but the same public IP's are working fine if i configure them in a different system or server. But if i configure a private Ip in the series of 192.168.1.1 or something like this i am able to browse for internet but can not access internet using public IP's, tried disabling firewall and even there is no router in between the server Can any one help me out in this.

Actually windows will verify the internet connectivity by accessing an internet file over internet " http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt " so could we reach that internet file when got prompt ?

Hi Tiger,

Thanks for the reply.I have two different ISP service providers,  Now basically my problem is when i am trying to connect Public IP from one service provider it shows Unidentified Network, No Internet Access In Windows 2008 R2 Server, when i connect the second ISP service provider on the same LAN port it's working. Even if i assign the 192 series IP it's working. It's not accepting with that particular ISP. So any idea to fix this issue.

Although 50-100 measurements of 10-15 different types are actually being made in each building, let's assume that the same 6 measurements are made in each building and that the only measurement types are volume, electrical energy, temperature, and pressure. Just to be clear, the "1 hour" volume and electrical energy measurements represent the total volume/energy "flow" over the past hour. On the other hand, the "1 hour" temperature and pressure measurements represent the average temp/pressure over the past hour.

To summarize, let's assume the following 6 "measures" are being recorded every hour in each building:
1) total cold water volume (liters) through a pipe over the past hour
2) total air volume (liters) through a duct over the past hour
3) total electrical energy consumed (watt hours) by the lighting circuit over the past hour
4) total electrical energy consumed (watt hours) by the appliance circuit over the past hour
5) average basement temperature (Celcius) over the past hour
6) average A/C duct pressure (pascals) over the past hour

I'm trying to bring all the data from all the buildings together in a SQL Server relational data warehouse and a SSAS OLAP database for further analysis in Excel and SSRS. However, I'm having difficulty identifying the proper grain and therefore, the proper fact table design. I've tried to draw analogies to financials since all book examples are given in terms of financials, but that seems to have confused me further. While the temperature and pressure examples seem to be period snapshots, it isn't clear to me whether the energy and flow examples are transactions, periodic snapshot, accumulating snapshots, or something else.

Here are some design options that I've explored, although each seems to have its own apparent pitfalls:

Option 1: Create one fact table that includes all measurements that CAN be summed [e.g., volume (liters) and energy (watt hours)] and a second fact table for all measurements that CANNOT be summed [e.g., temperature (Celcius) and pressure (pascals)].
Option 2: Create a different fact table for each distince unit of measure. In other words, one fact table for volume, a second for energy, a third for temperature, and a fourth for pressure.
Option 3: Create a single fact table that includes all measurements of all units, whether or not they can be summed.
Option 4: Before creating the fact table, convert all measurements that can be summed to units that cannot be summed. For example, if the measurement frequency is one hour, convert volume to liters per hour and convert energy to watt hours per hour (or watts).

I'd very much appreciate someone's advice or suggestions. Thank you.

Mapping columns to DQS composite domains

You can map multiple columns to a composite domain or you can map a single column with delimited values to a composite domain.

  • When you have multiple columns, you must map a column to each single domain in the composite domain to apply the composite domain rules to data cleansing.
  • When you have a single column with delimited values, you must map the single column to the composite domain. The values must appear in the same order as the single domains appear in the composite domain. And, the delimiter in the data source must match the delimiter that is used to parse the composite domain values.

For step by step instructions, see Map Columns to Composite Domains in Books Online.

Advice: Best tool to use for this data presentation

We are implementing SharePoint 2010 in our organisation and I've been asked to look at getting some BI content, since I have SQL Server & Reporting Services knowledge.  My head has been soaking up information for the last couple of weeks as I look into it and try out many scenarios, read blogs/tutorials.

There are so many ways to skin Sharepoint BI, and I've been getting to grips with Dashboard Designer and rediscovering my knowledge of Analysis Services!  I have been given an idea of the kind of thing management would like.  Management want somthing like this (which they mocked up in Excel), essentially all their KPI's rolled up into a simple summary screen.

My initial remit is to deliver something like this, even if it's powered by manually entered data.  Then start looking to power it by real data afterwards, as that will be a huge task, they want something soon, and the detail to follow.  Given that most of those KPI's come from different systems, I will need to do some heavy work afterwardss in SSAS.

What I've tried to get something similar so far is scorecards, which I like, but see to lack the flexability over their formatting.  I have been using a cube to show them the potential BI within our ICT Helpdesk data, using Scorecards, charts, etc.  But ultimately nothing that 'rolls up' to this sort of summary level.

I also have a feeling this next part of the question transcends PerformancePoint and touches on SSAS & DW structure.  The summary that they have asked for takes data from many systems (our IT Helpdesk database, Training database, Time-loggingdatabase).  I have currently created a cube which shows only the helpdesk data, I was going to create seperate cubes for the other systems/databases, is that right or wrong?  Should I infact be creating one large Cube which combines all those areas?

I keep looking at the options, but there are so many ways to skin it that it's mind boggling for someone new to this area.  So I'm after advice on what part of PerformancePoint or what to tool to use to head in the right direction.

Many thanks for reading, I hope you can help.

David

You are right about one thing, there are too many technologies available to do one thing and starting up it is a pain to pick one.

Taking one step at a time:

For sure you would need an OLAP cube no matter which Reporting tool you later on opt for. SSAS cube would allow you to utilize any reporting tool: SSRS, PerformancePoint, Excel services, PowerPivot etc. (plus 3rd party tools)

Personally I would use one cube rather than using multiple small cubes; reason: one is always easier to maintain. But it depends on your requirements if all the other source systems share common measures/dimensions it would be best to use one.

Initially you would be spending most of the time with SSIS for ETL operations, mapping and transforming data into one data warehouse. This would be the backbone of your solution, quality of data makes or breaks an implementation.

Finally once your data is consolidated and ETL working. You may pick any reporting tool of your liking or use all combined. PerformancePoint would have an edge if you are looking for scorecards, interactive reports and fast development.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for that reply, it does help with regard to the cube design.  But the main thing I still am very unsure about the best tool to display the data though.

On thing I have noticed is that the Scorecard seems very inflexible on layout and formatting.   Are there ways to do so?

To get something 'Up' for management, I have tried creating a simple Scorecard, based on a SharePoint list, to do the above, but you can't have some as %'s and some as numbers/decimals, it looks very messy.

Any suggestions?

Correct. Scorecards are not very flexible in layout and formatting out of the box. But on the other side they provide you with context menu for drill downs and rapid development platform. The thing about PerformancePoint is you can build a complete dashboard in couple of hours which on any other tool would take you a day or two.

In the same column (metric) you can one formatting.

If you rule out Scorecards the next closest thing would be SQL Reporting Services reports; full control on formatting/layout but no interactive support out of the box and fair enough development required. You would need to build your own actions and drill down reports, when/if needed.

In looking at your scorecard you could quite easily setup something very similar in PPS with Dashboard Designer and your groups top levels (Objective) would be Performance, Customer, and Staff.  Wouldn't be hard to do at all.

You should take a look at the following white paper that really does a good job on outlining the different Microsoft BI tools and what you can do with them - http:/download.microsoft.com/download/A/B/2/AB27C2C1-EA88-40D5-B183-D4AD6E858E86/Microsoft_BI_Tool_Choices.docx.

Devin Knight also did a good 6 part blog series in regards to this with his point of view as well - http://www.bidn.com/blogs/DevinKnight/ssis/2568/choosing-the-right-microsoft-reporting-technology-part-1-report-services.

If you are looking for the most flexibility and layout SSRS is probably going to be the route to go.  It will require more work versus PPS and you will have to code any additional functionality like Drillthrough (Show Details) and you won't get the Decomposition Tree functionality or built-in scorecarding features out-of-the-box.  Another option might be to explore some of the PowerPivot setup now with the SQL 2012 version since it has KPI support.  This would be a better option right now for cubes and PPS supports this (you can upgrade to Tabular SSAS when you are ready).  If you look at Excel 2013 you will also get Power View and the newer version will support KPIs as well.  Lots of things to consider, but take the time to see what features are needed by the users and the layout that is required.  Once you have that you can review the options to determine the right tool.

Good luck!

Client agent installations failing with a particular DCOM error.

Hi.

This isn't a question since I've already resolved the issue. However, I decided I'd still like to put a comment to the general community about it on the off chance it helps someone else, and at the very least serves as some kind of feedback in the capacity that I would obviously like to see the root cause fixed, and not just accept the fact I can work around it.

The issue relates to the following environment (test environment - SCCM isn't in production yet):

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 functional level domain.
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard R2 x64 host, running SQL Server 2008 SP1 x64.
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard R2 x64 host, running SCCM 2007 with SP2 (R2 isn't installed; version = 4.00.6487.2000).
  • Also on the above host is WSUS 3.0 SP2 x64.
  • Windows 7 Enterprise x32 clients.

The error from the client was as follows:

  • Source: DistributedCOM
  • Event ID: 10016
  • User: NETWORK SERVICE
  • Detail:
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {EE1BD859-AACD-48FE-A9B6-9358DC21ADAE}
     and APPID
    {AD65A69D-3831-40D7-9629-9B0B50A93843}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Steps taken to resolve the matter:

  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run dcomcnfg.
  3. Expand Component Services > Computers > My computer > DCOM config.
  4. Select the SMS Agent Host component (which corresponds to the APP GUID of AD65A69D-3831-40D7-9629-9B0B50A93843).
  5. Right-click this entry and choose Properties.
  6. Select the Security tab.
  7. Select the Edit button belonging to the Launch and Activation Permissions section.
  8. Select the Add button, and add the NETWORK SERVICE account.
  9. For the NETWORK SERVICE entry, select Allow:Local Activation, and Deny:the rest (as per the other security entries).
  10. Select the OK button twice to accept the changes.

So, with the above out of the way, that resolved the issue for one client. I'll likely have to look at a group policy solution before this can be contemplated for a production implementation, but to be honest, I shouldn't need to be doing this at all.

The client version as it appears in the "Software Update Point Client Installation" node is the same as that of the product (no suprise there), if that helps at all. It would be nice if either a) someone could enlighten me as to whether there is an updated version of the client that doesn't suffer this issue, and/or b) the process I went though could be verified for peace of mind. If the issue is repeatable, then it'd be nice to see a fix offered.

Given this is a "quick and dirty" post before I head off for other commitments, feel free to ask for more information and I'll try to get that back to you in reasonable time.

Cheers,
Lain

Hi stv,

Did you make sure to use the SYSTEM account instead of the NETWORK SERVICE account in steps 8 and 9 of my original post?

In addition, you seem to be struggling with local launching, not local activation as I was. With that in mind, in step 9, you'd want to check that the SYSTEM account has Local Launch checked, as in my case it was Local Activation that was missing.

I must say though, your error is harder to fathom than mine, as even when DCOM permissions have been specified rather than using the default, I haven't yet seen a case where the SYSTEM account doesn't have full rights (not that I've deliberately searched, but still, it's an odd scenario).

Cheers,
Lain

This article contains detailed info about these DCOM SCCM functions of the SMS Agent.  In particular, it discusses the SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) scenario.  Rather insightful.

how to inject all drivers to reference machine?

got different model DELL desktops in our environment, built the reference machine with 760, the problem is now I can ONLY load the reference back to 760, but not any other model due to the driver issue ( or I should say I could load it back any model, but couldn't boot the machines up except 760), and we are getting rid of 760 now, how do I inject all models' driver to reference so I can load reference on any machines?

thanks.

Reply:

I as well as most other IT pros prefer the Total Control scenario for driver management described in Johan's article here

This method will allow you to use one task sequence per OS to detect via the BIOS the make and model of the machine and inject drivers accordingly. This is done with driver groups. Again, see the article.

As far as the reference image is concerned, you need to sysprep the machine before creating the image for hardware independence. You can do this with the Sysprep and Capture TS.

thank you for all replies, but------------- I am not sure if we are talking about the same thing.

I don't have problem deploying the image I buit to any model in our environment, the problem I am having now is loading the reference machine to ANY model so I can modify it, such as get the patches updated.

I built the reference machine in DELL 760, and we are running out of this model, but I can't load the reference to any other model due to the driver issue(I guess it's driver issue), the reference OS got loaded, but I couldn't boot the machine up, I got to the step where it shows "start windows", then the machine restarted, and it kept going the loop. all I did is stole a 760 from our user, loaded the reference OS, got everything updated --> recaptured it. but it's a temporary solution, I need to learn how to load the reference to any model, that's my question.

thanks.

working now, my bad, we are talking about the same thing, I should test it after I uploaded the new model drivers to MDT.

it was not supposed to be a problem actually. anyway, learn from mistake.

Bitlocker being disabled by local admins/ Windows 2008/7-----Forums----

Environment: Windows 2008 R2 domain level and Windows 7

Goal: Do not allow regular/laptop users to disable Bitlocker

We implemented Bitlocker but we are facing the issue of users disabling Bitlocker in their systems. I found this link:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2010/08/13/how-to-prevent-local-administrator-from-turning-off-bitlocker.aspx

I have not tried this solution because I have these questions:

1- The domain admins group is part of the local administrators group in each system. According to the link "everyone" is not allowed to run the "manage-bde.exe" command . "Everyone" means the every user in the laptop.  I would like for domain admins and any group I assign("Helpdesk" group) to be able to disable Bitlocker if needed. How to do this?

2- Once this GPO is in place, how would we turn Bitlocker "on" ? "manage-bde.exe" is the only command to enable/disable this feature. This question is related to the first one.

Thanks

John

How did you implemented bitlocker and what issue have you encountered?

Reply:

I thik that you would want your users in the Authenticated Users group and then you would set that group to not be able to disable bitlocker.  You should have a seperate group for Domain admins and IT Support.
