Your experience in setting up SCOM 2007 R2

Your experience in setting up SCOM 2007 R2

Hello fellow Forum-Dwellers,

I am currently searching for the experiences of other administrators on deploying SCOM 2007 R2, and would much appreciate your help on that count.

What I am particularly interested in:

- Number of systems you monitor (if possible separated into Windows-Server, Linux-Server, Windows-Client, Linux-Client and SNMP-Object).

- ~Time it took you to setup the core system (and which of the components you use)

- Management-Packs in use

- ~Time it took you to setup the individual MPs

- # of Administrators managing or working with SCOM

- Any other experience you consider worth telling

If there already is a place with this kind of information, I would appreciate someone linking to it, for I have not found anything so far.

Regards and thanks in advance,

Bosparan

We monitor over 3000 systems (Windows only) in about 15 locations. No Unix, network/snmp stuff (we are a very big shop and have much better tools like Ehealth and Spectrum for networking/unix) 1 clustered RMS, 4 management servers and 25 gateways in remote locations & untrusted domains.

Once we got over the initial learning curve, our installation took a few days to get things going (clustered-RMS, 2 MS and our first couple of gateways)

MPs: Windows, AD, Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010, SQL 03/08/12, lots of internal/custom ones, HP hardware, Lyncserver, and some other minor ones

Depending on the complexity of the MP, some are easier to get going, some were harder. SQL took some time to debug and figure out the best config, the Exchange 2010 MP is a bear and the documentation for the Sharepoint MP absolutely stinks.

We have 2 guys who do SCOM here; we both split our time with other monitoring tools; I support Ehealth & Sitescope, my comrade handles Prognosis (VOIP) monitoring and a couple of minor tools.

Get a dev/test instance of SCOM set up. Do NOT do your testing of new MPs, CUs, in production. Do NOT cluster your RMS. It's more of a nightmare than it's worth. Know that the documentation for SCOM is really, really awful. There are a couple of books out there (Unleashed, for example), but it's only marginally OK. If you are a big enough shop, pay for Microsoft support. We have a dedicated support engineer who is basically on-call for us and it's been worth the $. Get a your own SQL cluster with great storage & IO.

Hello,

Thanks for the responses and information.

You have asked for an open ended information and that information would be difficult to put across in the forum... this is what i believe.. without one o one discussion :) .......

I have left the question fairly open-ended for several reasons:

  • Most people haven't made exact measurements on the aspects I'm interested in (time in particular). If I formulate the question too specific, they might be disencouraged to share their experience if they feel they cannot answer sufficiently. I appreciate any bit of feedback on this.
  • The more directly specific the question, the more demanding it is, in my perception. (Not to be confused with specific information. Someone with a technical problem asking a question here in the forums usually has a very non-specific request (help!) and - hopefully - provides very specific information on his problem) Since I am relying on your (the visitor's to this forum) willingness to share your experiences, I tried to communicate what kind of information I am interested in while trying not to sound demanding.

Of course I am also very interested in one on one discussions, though I do not think this forum is a proper place to do so.

However, would share information soon...

Looking forward to it.

Depending on the complexity of the MP, some are easier to get going, some were harder. SQL took some time to debug and figure out the best config, the Exchange 2010 MP is a bear and the documentation for the Sharepoint MP absolutely stinks.

Do you have a guestimate on how long it took you to get these three MPs running? (and I am so not looking forward to having to set them up)

Any particular pithole I ought to look out for?

If you are a big enough shop, pay for Microsoft support. We have a dedicated support engineer who is basically on-call for us and it's been worth the $.

Unfortunately enough we are unlikely to have that luxury (though I'll certainly research it. One never knows what will come out of the next budgeting meetings and having a proposition on what to spend on at hand can't hurt there). Can you tell me how many hours / week you use the support engineer's services? What do you use his services for?

Once again, thank you for the responses,

Regards,

Bosparan

SQL took us at least a week (maybe more, I can't remember now, it was over 2 yrs ago) to get right; we spent lots of time playing with the RunAs account, SQL permissions, etc. Exchange took a few days getting all of the moving parts right. Sharepoint took a while, partly because we didn't dedicate time to get it going (so it was back & forth), but I know for sure it took at least 16-24 hrs solid, including working with the DSE to get it figured out.

We use our DSE any time we have a question we can't answer with a google (er...bing) search or a question on a forum. For example, my co-worker is asking about some really obscure discovery he's trying to do. I asked why a Exchange 2010 mailbox discovery wasn't working, troubleshooting the 2010 correlation engine, pegged CPU (due to WMI issues), an on-site visit to check the health of our installation, on and on and on. The best part about having a DSE is that it cuts thru the clutter of MS support and you get right to someone who knows your setup and how you work, etc.

based on my exp...

I've been working on SCOM projects for last couple of years now and have worked on SCOM 2007, SP1, R2 ...have managed around 2k servers

SCOM Cluster, SQL cluster, DW/Reporting, multiple MS & GW servers (from app perspective i've not seen any issues .. runs fairly without any crashes)

Major MP's apart from basic Base OS, HP hardware, AD, DNS, DHCP IIS consist of:

SQL 2005/2008
BlackBerry (QMX Extension)
Web url monitoring
BizTalk Server
Exchange 2003/2007
Citrix
linux monitoring (basic monitoring)

from my experience I've seen tunning AD & DNS MP are most time consuming & the nosiest one. Of course MP tunning differs from env to env.

As a practice we do have test env where we perform all SCOM related activity before making any change in the production env.
And this consist of use of any new MP, change in topology, CU update

I've also worked on SCOM Remedy connectors .. though it is fairly easy to setup except some of things not mentioned clearly in the online doc (in my case I used unsupported env. but managed to make it happen)

CU update in SCOM cluster is also a pain and that's the one of reason MS has introduced new topology in SCOM 2012

Web content monitoring in SP1 was also a big pain and from my exp it hardly worked despite of spending several hours eventwith PSS and finaly had to move to R2

From Admin point of view... major activity comes on setting up a monitor, alerting based on requirement

From SQL perspective .. though SQL maintenance is part of the app.. but we do have dedicated SQL team to look at

From Helpdesk perspective ..I had hard time in solving issues when they reported alerts appearing late in the console and some time diff alerts in diff console (there were several reasons behind it..even though DB was doing fairly well at that point of time)

last but not the least...from my exp i would say plan ...plan and well plan out before making any changes in your infrasturcture... you spend most of the time in planning .. I've seen not well planned projects have ended in goofups :) and I've felt that pain.. but that's how you learn (my believe)

How to Configure aspnet:MaxHttpCollectionKeys in Azure

Is there an alternate Setting name that i can use to configure the value for aspnet:MaxHttpCollectionKeys in my ServiceDefinition.csdef and ServiceConfiguration.cscfg files?

Now, if i define the Setting name as "aspnet:MaxHttpCollectionKeys" in my .csdef file,

<ConfigurationSettings>
      <Setting name="aspnet:MaxHttpCollectionKeys"/>
</ConfigurationSettings>

I am getting this error:

"The XML specification is not valid: The 'name' attribute is invalid - The value 'aspnet:MaxHttpCollectionKeys' is invalid according to its datatype 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/ServiceHosting/2008/10/ServiceDefinition:NamedElementNameString' - The Pattern constraint failed."

Reply:

Hi,

The aspnet:MaxHttpCollectionKeys setting should go in the web.config (because this is a specific setting for IIS/ASP.NET). The goal of the service configuration is to have a place where you can define settings that:

  • Can be changed at runtime
  • Are accessible by the whole instance (meaning also from a worker role, from a console application, ...)

Hope this helps.

I was thinking that all application settings should be moved into ServiceDefinition & ServiceConfiguraiton files before deploying the project(MVC3) into azure.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Hi, you already got the solution, but this is in elobarate way.

No, It is not mandatory to move all the settings to ServiceDefinition and ServiceConfiguration files, but If you want to change the values to the settings at run with out redeploying in windows azure only those configurations can be moved to SD and SC files.

The values in the web.config file goes into the Azure packaged file while deploying so it is not possible for us to change the values with out redeploying the package.

Azure takes 2 files for deployment

1.Packaged code in zip format [all your binary file, assemblies, css files, web.config (All our code) + ServiceDefinition file]

2.Service configuration file

Hope it gives some more clarity, regarding SD and SC files.

Test notification for full mailbox warning

Dear All,

I want to change our notification for full mailbox warning on Exchange 2010. I already done steps by executed the command below:

New-SystemMessage -QuotaMessageType WarningMailbox -Language en -Text "Your mailbox has exceeded the warning limit specified by your e-mail administrator. Please reduce the size of your mailbox."

Now, I want to test send email the new notification, how to do that?

What's the point of blocking html extensions?

In SharePoint 2010, you cannot open html files - stored in a document library - directly in the browser. It was not the case in the previous version.

What is the point? Are there security concerns directly linked to html files?

I just did a quick test:

- upload a test.htm file to a library. SharePoint doesn't allow to open it, and instead offers to save it

- rename this same file from test.htm to test.aspx then upload it. In this case SharePoint opens it, no questions asked

Hi Chris and Phil,

yes, i know set permissive option it's a security hole. I think the reason that you don't open or work with html by default is because Sharepoint is based in .net tecnology and html code can be insert in a content webpart.

Why some of my shared drives are not responding when try to access?

Hi Every One,

I have shared few drives for few groups in our NAS Server. I have given Reader, Contributor and Co-Owner permissions as per their role.

Here the problems is the user can access few folders without any issue under the Shared drive, but few folders couldn't access and getting error like not responding or else the specified folder is not available.

For a normal user account I created few mapped drives, but later I was not able to disconnect them. Though few mapped drives are disconnected, still appearing for the users in mycomputer.

Code 12 for HDMI Audio via Radeo 4670 Graphics Card

Hello -
This is my only unsolvable (to me) hiccup with Win 7 so far running on an ASUS P5AD2-E Premium Motherboard. I'm using a Saphire Radeon 4670 graphics card which has integrated HDMI audio suport. Some people seem to have this working in Win 7 but no luck here yet.

I have the computer connected to an AV Receiver with an HDMI cable. Video passes over the cable fine.

The speaker icon in the lower right hand corner of my task tray has a red "x".

When I go to Start > Devices and Printers > Click on my Computer > Hardware
High Definition Audio Controller is at the top of the list and is the only thing with a yellow exclamation mark. It's device status says:
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

I have tried:
- Disabling all other non-essential integrated devices in the BIOS (including LAN ports, serial, parallel, game) ... integrated wi-fi is still on (my only network connection option)
- Toggling HD Audio in the BIOS (both enabled, and disabled)
- Changing Plug-n-Play OS in the BIOS from No to Yes
- Removing the driver for the HD Audio Controller and rebooting (result: Win 7 found the device, restalled it, then upon reboot, same problems persist.)

High Definition Audio is listed at Location: PCI bus 3, device 0, function 1 in Hardware
ATI Radeon HD 4670 is listed at Location: PCI bus 3, device 0, function 0 in Hardware
That grouping looks right to me

Hello bmcent1,

Try running the hardware troubleshooter in Action Center on both devices and post what it says or if it finds a fix.  Code 12 means they are sharing the same I/O.  Hopefully Windows can reslove this but it could also be a BIOS configuration.

I tried running the troubleshooter under action center, then selected "Configure a device" and got:
High Definition Audio Controller is not working properly Detected ! (yellow triangle w/ exclamation mark)
Hardware changes might not have been detected Detected !

I also tried the troubleshooter playing back audio and received:
Hardware changes might not have been detected Detected !

What did yo mean by both devices ... the HDMI audio and the 4670 video card? or HDMI audio and turning on the onboad HD Audio?

When I look in Devices and Printers > my computer > Hardware, the HD Audio Controller still shows up with the yellow ! with same error message and code 12.

I'll try updating my BIOS and see if that helps. Problem is, I decided to finally leave out the floppy drive this time and, now I need it  :) I tried making a bootable DOS CD for the BIOS updater program but by blu-ray drive in this new computer doesn't see any files on it.

Reply:
I updated my BIOS to the latest available from ASUS, then reloaded BIOS defaults. No improvement.

I also tried uninstalling the ATI driver and the High Definition Audio Controller driver at the same time and rebooting.

Following reboot, the HD Audio Controller is found and Win 7 installs a driver for it. But it asks for a reboot. Following the reboot, same Code 12 error for the controller as before.

Hello bmcent1,

By both I was referring to the video and audio.  The troubleshooter recognized a problem so that is good.  Did it have any suggestions to fixing it?
-Scott

Reply:
Hi Scott -
It did not make any suggestions for resolving the Code 12 issue.

I have turned off virtually everything on the motherboard. Additionally, the video card is the only card in the system.

I reinstalled the video card driver (after uninstalling it first) and this did not make an improvement.

I'm tempted to try reinstalling Win 7 now that the BIOS is updated and so many of the motherboard's integrated components are disabled. But I wish there were an easier fix.

Is it recommended that we open support tickets with Microsoft when we find something perplexing like this? Seems like it could be a bug, and that's why they have the RC candidate out here for us to try out. What's the best thing to do next?

Hi bmcent1,
I was having issues with the drivers for my ATI audio as well a few weeks back, it never gave me a code 12, but it was conflicting with my onboard audio which did give me a code 12. What I had to do to resolve it,
I had to download the ATI audio driver from the Realtek high definition driver page, about halfway down the page
 http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
It would not let me uninstall the current driver, I had to reboot in safe mode to disable the device, then reboot and install the new driver. Everything worked fine then, I was able to use both the ATI audio and the onboard audio...
That was my experience with ATI audio and an Asus motherboard.
Hope it helps you as well
Shakey

Thanks shakeyplace and SaMcp1123 for your ideas.

I went ahead and competely reinstalled Win7 (deleting the old partitions before starting the new install.)

I can confirm that this problem exists after the clean install, and before any 3rd party drivers have been installed.

At this point, I have the latest BIOS from ASUS, no additional cards in the PC other than the Sapphire 4670 graphics card, and as much as possible, the integrated/onboard controllers are turned off in the BIOS.

I still see the error:

"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)"

For High Definition Audio Controller when I look in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers > click on my computer (which has a yellow ! over it.)

I'll check the link to the thread you sent for filing a bug.

I have been using the 32-bit version of Win 7. I may try the 64-bit version in the next day or so to see if it works any better. I'd shied away from 64-bit since I only have 2GB of RAM and don't like wasting it with the longer address pointers and other overhead of 64-bit... but obviously that's where things are headed so if it solves my lack of audio issue, I'll be pleased.

I'll update this thread with any info I find. If anyone can suggest how to troubleshoot a possible IRQ conflict in Win 7, please post some details or links here.

Yes, I tried that. I received this error message:

"No Driver was supported in this driver package"

That reads to me almost like a fill in the blank is missing (ie "No ______ Driver was supported" ...)

I think the driver cannot install because Win 7 has the resource conflict and isn't representing the audio controller on the graphics card to the OS or driver installer softare.

After I wiped and reinstalled, I noticed the card has moved from PCI location 3 to 4, but it hasn't made any difference in terms of the Code 12 error.

Hmmm, it installed for me, but mine was the 4870, I gotta ask, it was the ATI driver on that page you downloaded, right? I wonder if that was the difference, in my case I was not able to uninstall the driver or disable the device until I booted in safe mode, Is it possible for you to right click and disable the hdmi audio device? If it lets you do that, will the onboard audio work then?

I appreciate your asking  :-) ... maybe it will shake out some silly mistake on my side.

Here's what I did this time. After reinstalling Win 7 and seeing the same Code 12 error, I didn't go any figure (ie didn't try to install any 3rd party drivers) because I assume this is a resource conflict to be handled by Windows before a driver can get to it. But I'll try in case it works.

I went to the URL you referenced above, then clicked the "High Definition Audio Codecs (Software)" link on that page, that takes me to a second page, and second from the bottom in the list of drivers to download is "ATI HDMI Audio Device R2.25 2009/6/3" ... I downloaded that and tried to install it (run it)...

The file is called HDMI_R225A (.exe I believe). Double click that, Install Shield Wizzard starts, says "Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for Realtek High Definition Audio Driver"

I click Next, and quickly get the error, "No Driver was supported in this package."

Both before attempting to install that driver, and after, it's the same. If I go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers > click on my computer > select the Hardware tab: "High Definition Audio Controller" shows up at the top of the list with a yellow exclamation mark over it.

It is listed with
Manufacturer: Microsoft
Location: PCI bus 4, device 0, function 1
Device status: This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If I click Properties  under General it lists this for Device Status -
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

I have already disabled the onboad (on motherboard) HD audio device. I have also disabled everything possible in terms of integrated/onboard controllers on the motherboard. I have only 1 PCI card in the system which is this Sapphire 4670 graphics card with integrated HD audio.

In that same High Definition Audio Controller Properties window, if I click the Driver tab, I see:

High Definition Audio Controoler
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 4/21/2009
Driver Version: 6.1.7100.0
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows

I can click a button for Driver Details, all the other buttons (including Update Driver..., Roll Back Driver, Disable, and Uninstall are grayed/whited out and not clickable.)

When I click Details I see:

Driver files:
C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\hdaudiobus.sys

followed by the same information from the previous window for Provider and Digital Signer.
File Version: 6.1.7100.0 (winamain_win7rc.090421-1700)

I am not able to uninstall the driver. Is this where you were recommending booting into safe mode? I will have to figure out how to do that. What's the key combination?

After you booted to safemode and removed the windows driver, did you immediately run the HDMI_R255A installer? Or did you use a different method and point Windows to that file? Did you have to expand the file somehow if that's the case?

I take it back, I had to elevate priveleges, then I could click the Uninstall button on the High Definition Audio Controller Properties window.

I was able to Uninstall, which pulled that device out of my devices list. However, when I tried to install the HDMI_R255A driver without rebooting first, I received the same error message, "No Driver was supported in this package."

Hello bmcent1,

To boot into safe mode you repeatedly tap F8 in between POST and Windows Startup.

Upon rebooting, it automatically installs the Windows software driver again and I get a message "Driver Software Installed Successfully." However, when I look at the Hardware list, everything is the same with the HD Audio Controller showing yellow ! and Code 12. Same driver (Microsoft as before.)

------------------------------------
Reply:
Thanks! I'm going to try that now.

I'll try to Uninstall the driver, then boot to Safe Mode, see if windows doesn't install a driver automatically, and if not, I'll try to install the HDMI_R255A driver from Safe Mode.

Reply:
Even booting into safe mode (after Uninstalling the driver from regular mode) Windows 7 automatically installs the driver for the card right after booting. If I try to uninstall the Microsoft High Definition Audio driver within safe mode, and execute HDMI_R255A (the ATI HDMI driver installer) it gives me the same error message:
"No Driver was supported in this package."

Is there a way to prevent Win 7 from detecting new hardware and automatically installing drivers for it at boot time?

Reply:
Ok, bmcent,  what I did exactly was , I was unable to do anything in normal mode as well, buttons were greyed for me as well. So I rebooted in safe mode, went to device manager and disabled the device in safe mode, when I trebooted in normal mode I was able to go go back into device manager, right click on the ATI audio device, select properties and the uninstall driver box was no longer greyed out so I uninstalled the driver so windows could not reinstall that driver. Then I ran the installation program from realtek. it is reintalling the driver because you are uninstalling the device from the right click menu, what I am asking you to do is uninstall the driver, not the device

Yes, it is
. Boot into safe mode. it will not let you uninstall the driver, it will let you disable the device

No, once disabled I was able to boot in normal mode and the option to uninstall the driver was available, I then uninstalled the driver, the key was to uninstall the driver, don't uninstall the device

I have tried both, with the same result, HDMI_R255A says "No Driver was supported in this package."

On my computer, I do not need to boot into safe mode in order to select either "Disable" or "Uninstall". Uninstall says "To uninstall the driver (Advanced)". Disable says "Disables the selected device." I do have to click "Change Settings" after highlighting "High Definition Audio Controller" in the Hardware list and clicking on "Properties before both of those options become clickable.

I've tried both Disable and Uninstall from regular and Safe mode with the same error from the HDMI_R255A driver from that web link.

At this point, I'm fairly certain this is not a driver issue (at least not a 3rd party driver) since windows 7 is having (Code 12) resource conflicts which are preventing a 3rd party driver from seeing the device.

The chipset on this ASUS P5AD2-E Premium motherboard is the Intel i925XE. This is a very popular board and chipset (though a couple years old.) I think it's going to need to be well supported by Win 7 "out of the box."

Further troubleshooting things I tried within the BIOS (1006.006 which is the latest from ASUS):
- Disabling USB support altogether
- Enabling ACPI 2.0 Support
- Disabling ACPI support
- Disabling ASUS AI Booster settings
- PCI / PCI-Express boot order (tried both options)

... I tried toggling almost every BIOS setting, one at a time, with no improvement.

The I went ahead and loaded BIOS setup defaults (to get the state ASUS recommends for their boards.) Again, no improvement.

At this point, I may try installing Win 7 64-bit just to see if I have better luck.

I love the look and feel, but this is supposed to be a Home Theater PC system so it's a no go without audio. Understand Win 7 is in a release candidate phase and not everything works right now. Just hope developers have a chance to look into this and get it resolved.

Guys (at TechNet), you have my e-mail, feel free to contact me if there is any further troubleshooting I can do. I'll try to check back on this thread from time to time as well.

Please let me know if there's another way to do that, but this is what I tried:

Highlighted the High Definition Audio Controller in the device functions list. Clicked on Properties. Clicked Change Settings. Clicked on the Resources tab on the High Definition Audio Controller Properties sheet.

There's no obvious way to assign or reassign an IRQ. This is what it says:

Resource settings:
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use.

If you want to use this device , you will need to disable one of the other devices on the system.

Not wanting to beat a dead horse but I disabled everything possible in the BIOS (details above) and it didn't make any difference to this issue.

A very knowlegeable poster at AVSforum.com (renethx) pointed me to another thread (which points to yet other threads) of people having this problem. It seems to be common among people with the ATI radeon cards that have onboard HD audio and are trying to use them in circa 2004 motherboards.

The link shows a screen shot (not taken by me) which is exactly the same as I see when trying to install the Realtek drivers linked earlier in this thread.

Not yet, it will be a couple days for a new motherboard to get here. But renethx on another thread (where he linked to the one I linked above) did specifically mention the 915 chipset as one having this problem.

I'd still like to know if it is something that can be resolved by the Win 7 OS, even if it is a "workaround" to whatever problem these older chipsets have with these newer ati cards.

One thing you referred to (Upon rebooting, it automatically installs the Windows software driver again and I get a message "Driver Software Installed Successfully.") reminds me of similar experiences. The problem here is that the "hardware ID / compatible ID" system is thought to prevent possible driver / device mismatches but doesn't work to 100%. You can easily put product ID's into a driver's *.inf file. If you do that at the right locations and the ID matches your device's ID, Windows will think that's OK and install the driver. The old trick to persuade ATI desktop drivers to work on a notebook card relies on that, and it works. If you use the same trick to modify a driver that is really (not only thought to be) incompatible (DX10 driver for DX9 card), the installation will work the same way, without any protest. You will only get a BSOD or a black screen after your next reboot.
So, installing wrong drivers is not a great effort. It can be a way greater effort to get rid of them if Windows thinks "The best driver software for your device is already installed" by the wrong assumption matching ID's would ensure compatibility. Sometimes they don't, and - like you noticed - Windows will automatically reinstall "the best driver software" ad nausea if you don't give it a heavy brainwashing. As long as it remembers and finds a "theoretically right, but practically wrong" driver, it will use this driver instead of the better ones you try to foist on it.
So, be cautious with conclusions about the hardware. You may be presented by a real hardware problem (incompatibility) or only by a fictitious one (ID mismatch). The chances for the latter are especially good when speaking of beta drivers for a beta OS.

BTW, the only near-safe way to avoid problems of this kind is what MS tried to do and didn't to the last extreme: To allow only digitally signed and WHQL certified drivers to be installed and to reject ALL others without any exceptions. Well, you can imagine the consequences.

Thanks for the reply Sanmartin. This sounds like something I would try but it's a little over my head in Windows. I have to admit, I have a very stong background in Unix and Linux, but I also (of course) grew up with Windows. In Linux I might run 'strings' on a driver and 'grep' through the result and even use a hex editor to modify the driver. In Windows, I'm afraid I don't know how to match up the *.inf file that belongs to Microsoft's C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\hdaudiobus.sys driver and I don't know how to find IDs for the two different functions on the card (Graphics and Audio.)

If you can provide any step by step directions, I will try them.

Also, is there any way to prevent Win7 from auto installing that wrong file? Could hdaudiobus.sys simply be renamed or moved to another directory so Win7 wouldn't find it at boot time?

------------------------------------
Reply:

I'm afraid you took my general thoughts about "automatic reinstalling" and the role of product ID's as a practical advice. No, no step-by-step suggestions to change *.inf files. You could get unwanted results if you do that without knowledge.
Let "hdaudbus.sys" where it belongs, that's a support driver and even your new device driver may need it. The only driver that could interfere with your installation - as far as I see - is the "hdaudio" driver. If you want to disable it temporarily (just to test if the automatic reinstall does reappear or not), go to \windows\inf and rename hdaudio.inf and hdaudio.pnf into something similar; don't delete them until you are sure that this is your conflict's cause. Then disable WindowsUpdate, reboot and see if you can install your new driver now. You have a suitable driver, don't you? (The thread is so long now that I lose tracks a bit...)
Good luck!

Hy

Same problem here i think. Here are some pics:

link

It's a friends old PC. He just recently bought a Saphire HD4650 with inegrated HDMI and installed a fresh XP. But after he installed the audio driver ( latest reatlek WDM_R226 or the one form Asus support) his computer started to get laggy after restart: very slow bootup and shutodwn, somewhat unresponsive Widows.

Any ideas here how to bypass the problem here? Are there some disable services/prefetch/settings?

So i thought to give Win7 a try. Now everything seems responsive, impressive. Exept there is a yellow triangle on the second(?) High Definiton Audio Controller; it has Device Status eror: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)" and i'm guessing it is the ATI HDMI, but i can't install the realtek HDMI_R225A (no driver supported)

On further inspection of the motherboard manual (ASUS P4GPL-X ) i found that the PCIE-X slot and the onboard audio share the same IRQ (see pics). This could probably be the problem? Or is it just simply old and can't handle the new GPU.

Anyway i tried most of what you guys wrote in this thread: bios settings/safe mode/.inf rename/(re)installs.

Somewhere along the line i cam across (link): "The only proper solution to an IRQ conflict in XP is to find a slot for the offending card that is not shared with other resources. And if you don't have a spare, unshared slot, either toss the card or toss your motherboard and get something better and more modern. That is not a joke." - haha...not.

If no other solutions surface, I think i'll just leave it at that .. for now.

At least i got the windows to work properly. Also the HDMI video works, just need to use an extra cable for sound :(

Out of curiousity, if any updates or service packs to Win 7 fix this issue, will it be easy to find somewhere? Ie, is there a standard place to check release notes and check for wording about HDMI Audio or something similar?

I've put Win 7 testing on hold because I was mostly going to use the PC for a HTPC. Since I can't get audio out of the card, I haven't been working with it and I'm not sure if/when I'll get around to buying a new motherboard.

Sort of a follow-up question to my last...

Since Win 7 RTM, would we expect any of the updates / fixes in RTM to be back ported and tested in Win 7 RC?

I was down for a while waiting for a hard drive replacement. I have that and recently installed Win 7 RC fresh. I still have a red X over my speaker icon in the task tray. Error on mouse over reported as "No Audio Output Device is installed."

At first, I was thinking this was mainly an issue with the onboard HDMI of the Radeon 4670, but I now realize there is no "work around" in the sense that I also cannot access the integrated optical audio out which is included on my Asus P5AD2-E Premium motherboard.

Any new suggestions?

Hi

We haven't been given any information about this yet. It is doubtful since the RC build has a ton of debugging code and other components that will be removed from the RTM build.

If we get any information about this, we will post it here.

Thanks for offering a suggestion JJTech. Unfortunately, it does not work and I want to post that here so others don't waste time with driver updates for this particular issue.

The issue seems to stem from the Code 12, a resource conflict, or something low level in the OS not presenting the card correctly. The original drivers could not see the card. The latest Catalyst driver (from your link) actually installed, but had no change on the device not working and still list the same Code 12 condition.

Code 12 says to "free up resources" but I've tried turning off every non-essential motherboard device (including all USB ports) and the Code 12 never resolves itself. That's why I don't think it's a simple IRQ conflict.

Hi again bmcent1 , I can see The possible cause already and I'll get right down to the point. You listed to me that you have only 2GB of RAM in your system and the minimum for Windows 7 is 2GB to function alone, the Recommended is 4GB or higher and according to this(http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?psn=000101&pid=206 ) you need 1GB of RAM Free but your running out of memory from W7 and other programs; and your system is asking for more(code 12). So try upgrading to 4GB or 6GB of RAM and see if that works, I bet it will. Good Luck :) And Let me know how it goes.

Hi guys,
I did face the same problem after Windows 7 installation. My PC is running on AMD Athlon 64 Bit, 3 GB Ram, with Metalware AM2 motherboard, and ATI Radeon HD 3870.

My problem is 100% just like you are facing right now. I managed to install the latest ATI driver for Win 7 and after system restart , CCC error shows no compatible driver/software install@ detected. In device manager, Error code 12 for PCI bus conflict with HD Audio.

This problem is really annoying level 10 for me. I tried everything: disabling audio in BIOS, disable HD audio in Device Manager. Yet, after restart, Pop Up appear on taskbar, "High Definition AUdio successfully been installed".

For time being, I got my self using my onboard graphics (Radeon 1150).

It seem that my Radeon 3870 and the HD Audio (that I don't ever use) are sharing the same PCI bus address.

If you found any progress or solution other than replacing the motherboard, please share those info with me. Like you're saying, it might be a hiccup. But for me, it's super annoying knowing that I can even disable the HD Audio that i don't use, yet interupting those i really need.

Hi there,

Me too, helping my brother to upgrade his Asus motherboard system with Saphire Radeon 4XXX graphics card, so he can play Blu-Ray movies.  The upgrade was half way success.  He is trying to use the HDMI out on the video card to feed video and audio to his 42in HDTV, video works great but we can never ever got the audio feed through the HDMI line to the TV.  After checking his computer's device settings.  We found the famous "High Definition Audio Controller" yellow exclamation mark and [code 12] error code.  After hours of trail, nothing works. Then we decided to contact Saphire and we finally got an answer (bad news):

Question: I had an Intel 915 based on MB , and connect with your HDMI support VGA card , why I cannot get the sound via HDMI audio output ?
Answer: Intel 915/925 series MBs base on ICH6 southbridge chipset which cannot support HDMI audio due to the hardware limitation.

So ladies and gentlemen, the search is over, if you have a motherboard with the above hardware. Tough luck!  "NO" audio will ever feed though your HDMI line.  So just go ahead and disable the "High Definition Audio Controller" in the device settings and go back to your old day speaker wires or try using Nvidia Geforce video card which have S/PDIF line to HDMI output or upgrade your motherboard (isn't it what HDCP compliant want us to do $$$). :=(

Help with ADMT and migrating workstation & servers

    Hello all,

I'm preparing an interforest AD migration. I've setup my lab and performed the following:

    • Created source and target domains
    • Created trust between them, disabled SID filtering and enabled SID history
    • Migrated groups
    • Migrated user accounts

At this point all went well. However, regarding workstation/member server migration, it gets confusing and the information I found on the web is contradicting.

Some people say to migrate the workstations/servers using Workstation Migration Wizard without any security translation. Then use the Security Translation Wizard to re-acl the workstation/servers. Others say the opposite: Use the Security Translation Wizard to re-acl the workstations/servers first and then use the Workstation Migration Wizard to migrate the workstation/servers (without any security translation).

Furthermore, reading the ADMT document from Microsoft, it say to use the Security Translation Wizard to do the user profile and then to use the Workstation Migration Wizard to migrate the workstation/server and re-acl at the same time!      ARG!!!

    Two questions:

    1. What is the best way to do Workstation/server migration (do I re-acl fisrt then migrate, migrate first then re-acl, do I do all in one shot...)?
    2. In my testing I've notice that, for example, when the group "Domain Users" was granted specific rights to a file directory, the ADMT re-acl did not change Source\Domain Users to Target\Domain Users. I'm assuming this is normal behavior since Built-In accounts are not migrated with ADMT.

    Thanks,

    Jesmat

Perform security translation first and them migrate. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc974405%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

Yes, you are correct built-in groups are not migrated.

    Hello Awinish,

Thanks for your reply. Just one thing, you mentione to do the security translation first then do the migration. However, the article you are referencing (Translate security on member servers) is a sub-section of "Completing Post-Migration Tasks". So according to the article, the security translation is done post-migration.  However, in the article in the "Computer Selection" section, it mentions to select computers in the source domain. If this is post-migration, shouln't it be the computers in the target domain.

    Thanks,

    Jesmat.

    SSRS 2008 R2 Deployment

.I am trying to generate deployment scripts for SSRS 2008 R2 and I am encountering the following problem -

    Background

I have reached a point where I am able to generate scripts for

    -          Folder Structures

    -          Shared DataSets

    -          Shared DataSources

    -          Linked Reports

    -          Reports

Copying the .rds and .rdl through script did not set references to shared datasource and shared datasets respectively. Therefore, I had to explicitly set references for both shared datasets and reports through scripts / C# Code.

Now, when I run the reports that are deployed as a result of these scripts, I get the following error –

An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)

One or more parameters required to run the report have not been specified. (rsParametersNotSpecified)

I tried debugging this error by creating a C# console application that has reference to SSRS Web Service (ReportingService2010). On calling GetItemParameters, I noticed that all parameters that are query based have a ParameterState "Dynamic Values Unavailable".

    Questions

    -          I am not sure what is missing here and more importantly how can I correct this problem?

    -          Also, is there a simpler & efficient way to generate deployment scripts for SSRS 2008 R2? I am currently using a third part tool RS Scripter to generate some basic scripts. Then I have to manually edit scripts because the tool does not script out shared datasets & linked reports.

    Thanks,

    Sugandha

    Hello,

Please check that all the required parameters by the report are supplied? And let us know afterwards in case of any issues

    Hello philevra,

I have two copies of the same report -  one that was deployed using BIDS and the other that was deployed as a result of the scripts.

The one that was deployed through BIDs runs fine while the other one gives error "one or more parameter was not specified". I downloaded both the .rdl files from the Server so that I compare the two .rdls to check how are they different but they are identical.

As mentioned earlier on calling GetItemParameters, I noticed that all parameters that are query based have a ParameterState "Dynamic Values Unavailable".

What could be causing this behavior?

    Thanks,

    Sugandha

    All,

I was able to resolve my problem. There was a line of incorrect code when creating shared datasets that was mapping one shared dataset name to another shared dataset's definition. This was causing the error "one or more parameters may be required" because the other shared datasets definition expected paramters.

I am ablt to deploy shared datasets and linked reports successfully.

    Thanks

It will still be best to know of a tool that automatically scripts out shared datasets as well. Basically a scipting tool that is compliant with 2008 R2.

Storage pool in a Hyper-V guest: something's wrong here.

    Hi

I would like to extend the discussion started here about the ability to use storage space in a Guest OS on Hyper-V 3 (Win8 server core). It seems that the way storage space work is a major issue when you try to use it in a VM running under Windows8 Core + Hyper-V.

    How to figure-it out:

On the Hyper-V host (running Windows8 server core) create a Windows8 server guest and use it with physical HDD (HDD passtrough).
Once the Win8 guest is installed, configure a storage pool with your physical drives. All will work fine (expect the bug we know about copying files when the smallest drive is near full). Restart the guest, everything still fine, the guest still has full access of the storage pool.

Now, reboot the host (yes this is something that can append even on a production machine!).
Then it's start to be tricky !

In fact Hyper-V will be unable to start the VM (iSCSI error), main reason? no more drive reachable by the hypervisor. The first question will be: where are my drive ??
Look at the Device Manager on the host, all your drive will be there, as expected.
Look at the Disk Manager on the host: nothing, no more drives...

Open the Server Manager -> storage and share section => Surprise! The storage pool you've created on the guest OS is now attached on the Host. And absolutely nothing warned you or even asked you: "Windows as detected a storage pool, would you attache it on the machine?" Nothing!
Once the storage pool is attached on the OS, it seems there's no way to "detach" it, and of course, all your physical drive become totally unreachable... so, no more drive for the VM.

The funny thing is that you can even try with a Win8 Consumer preview. Connect the drives to it, and without any warning, you'll see the storage space section (control panel) filled with a new storage space... the one you've created early. And it's hotplug! I tried on my Desktop Win8CP via a external dock connected on a eSATA port. No reboot needed, nothing told me that a drive was plugged, nothing told me that something appends, and of course, nothing told me that a storage space was attach to the OS.

I think there's a big failure in the Way Win8 runs storage spaces, and it's something that need to be fixed. Otherwise it will a massive fail for those who run file servers as guest of Hyper-V.

Back to the discussion. I didn't find other feedback (except for the topic I mentioned above) about this issue. Is there already a bug report for this ?
I looked to post one on connect but I didn't find the good channel for this.

    Best Regards

    Anil,

During the FIM Sync installation, the installer created (by default) some security groups. You should add the application pool identity a member of the 'FIMSyncAdmins' group.

If you do not know what this application pool identity is, follow these steps to find out:

    1. Open IIS Manager.
    2. In the Connections pane, expand the server node and click Application Pools.
    3. On the Application Pools page, select the application pool and then click Advanced Settings in the Actions pane.

    Best regards,

i made a Batch file website project in c# in my local machine after this i deploy this on server where fim portal and fimsyncservice are installed this project have code on button click event to run a batch file this batch file have one .vbs script file which have management agent run code.but every thing is ok that i wrote in .vbs file button click event hit batch file and .vbs file.but management agent code is not runing

    Set Service = GetObject("winmgmts:{authenticationLevel=PktPrivacy}!root/MicrosoftIdentityIntegrationServer")
    Wscript.Echo "Syncing with HR"
    Set MASet   = Service.ExecQuery("select * from MIIS_ManagementAgent where Guid = '{3D026F5F-2BA3-4C55-971A-C10DC1797FE0}'")

only "Syncing with HR" is print on click event of button.when i run this script via batch file mannully or task sheduler working fine.but through asp.net(with c#) page this is not working.

Apparantly, the application pool identity account is 'ApplicationPoolIdentity'. To add this user to the local security group, follow these steps:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739265(v=ws.10).aspx

In step 3, right-click the group 'FIMSyncAdmins'

Another option is to run as a local or domain user account, but there are some benefits to using the default the way you have it. I've seen some cases where the 'load user profile' option could make a difference, so you could try both values.

Other than those items, this should work

Use "Ask a Question" if you have a problem - not "General Discussion"

Using "Ask a Question" does not exclude a discussion that ends with finding the answer to your question.

However "General Discussion" threads do not allow anyone to mark the thread as Answered - which is useful information and which in effect "Closes" the thread.

(It also by the way means that no-one who replies to the thread gets any points for doing so. Which is a little known fact.)

So please try to use "General Discussion" only on those rare occasions you genuinely have a discussion issue rather than a problem you want to find an answer to.

    Thanks !

(Yes, it is ironic that I had to use "General Description" for this one ...)

    Azure Billing office hours

I am on the Windows Azure team, and I was wondering if anyone is interested in doing "office hours" where you get to ask Azure billing experts questions about signup, subscriptions, offers, bills etc. It will be an open forum, and we'll probably do it over Skype or Google Hangout. Possible times are 9 AM Pacific Standard or 3 PM Pacific Standard.

Please upvote this post if you are interested in attending. If I see enough upvotes or replies, I will set up something.
