Avoid/merge "audit trail" if no activity
<alert comment="technet newbie but extensive experience with vBulletin, SMF, phpBB, wiki, etc.">
Based on 10 minutes in the Sandbox, I would suggest reducing/merging/eliminating the "audit trail" if there has been no "activity" on a thread.
I can appreciate the value of an "audit trail" ... so you don't have a situation where "after the fact" a person modifies a posting that invalidates subsequent posts. This seems valuable in a "wiki" situation ... especially once there has been some activity.
However, if there has not been a reply to a post, then I would appreciate a "merging" of the edits.
This seems to especially apply since there doesn't seem to be an obvious "Preview" capability. So I suppose you either:
* compose the post in the "Sandbox" to get it to look right, then submit to the actual forum
* compose in a text editor and hope it doesn't look to flawed
* have an audit trail that shows what a newbie / klutz you are trying to figure out tags

SP3 too many error reports
They have killed XP using this SP3 and utter "it's time for vista?"
What a strategic move.

Just a couple comments.
From what I can see is that MS should have done a bit more work on this SP3 before releasing it in anyway for starters.
Now some where is this forum, I seen where a MS tech rep says to prep your pc before installing sp 3 e.g uninstalling a whole heap of your software such as your A/V, any type of spyware detection, cd burning programs and so on then going to the REG and cleaning that all up.
For starters not all pc users would be able to do this. so where does that leave them? Answer = taking their machine to a IT shop, at whose cost? well you wouldn't need to be a brain surgen to figure that one out. My wife wouldnt even know where to find the control panel let alone the REG.
All I can say is well done and not so good thinking MS Techs I sure wont be in a hurry to install SP3.

XP Pro still has a few years left until Microsoft get its house in order with Vista.
I am just coming to the end of my dream computer for editing videos and have chosen to go the Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit rough. I want to have a machine, which will be future proof for the next five years. You can imagine what a shock this site is to me and I am thankful I came across it. I will certainly not be installing Vista and will order XP pro 64-bit instead. There seems to be no proper reply to most of the questions posed by many people who seem to know what they are doing, but are not able to find a way to repair the damage that seem to be cause by the encryption software on there hard disk that Vista has installed on setup. While I like to have a secure PC from others, Vista sounds like the guard dog turning on it owner. No, XP Pro still has a few years left until Microsoft get its house in order.
Reply:
If you are only concerned about Encryption, then ok, I can give you that cause I ahve not messed with it.
But over all, Vista is a very solid OS. I do video capture and rendering without a single solitary problem.
I get things done in twice the time I did on my XP system, mostly due to the new hardware.
I have never had a BSOD in vista, never had it lock up or freeze or crash, unless it was something I did wrong.
We have sold about 60 Vista PC's and have not had anyone come back to us about problems.
I ahve family members using Vista, and besides a slight learning curve, have not complained about any problems what so ever.
I can say with confidence that, a lot of the posts out here may be legit on some level, but are absolutly not the norm.
Alot are going to be existing problems with OS, software or hardware that are being pointed in the wrong direction.
Alot of these systems are going to come from the big OEM's who don't configure things properly and in the long run may cause people a lot of issue.
The largest majority of real problems that people have with thier PC's are usually not Windows specific related, but OEM configuration, 3rd party software, Crapware, and last but not least user stupidity.

Going to a support forum is not the best way to determine whether or not you should upgrade to a particular operating system.
This would be like making a decision to move to a new town, based on visiting a local hospital in that town. Your conclusion would be "I'm not going to move to that town, because everyone there is sick."
If you purchase the Ultimate version of Vista, it includes the Bitlocker encryption component. This incorporates the latest encrypting technology. Here are some links with more information.

I was just thinking that after I had posted my comment. Thanks for been understanding. I am getting the last bit of hardware next week and am looking forward to cranking it up for the first time. It's amazing how much junk we all collect in our old PC and the biggest job is what goes and what stays. I was a bit nerves about the encryption part of Vista as I had problems with backup in the past. However, we will see how it will go. I will keep my old machine just in case.

Windows XP SP3 RC2 - Standalone Update installs now available, in addition to Windows Update
Just a brief note - in addition to the existing Windows Update method of receiving Windows XP SP3 RC2, we have also made available standalone update packages for English, German and Japanese. These packages are the same build as RC2 (build 3311) and are available from the same location in the Microsoft Download Center.
Other than being standalone update packages instead of delivered via Windows Update, all previous guidance regarding this release still applies. See original post regarding Windows XP SP3 RC2 for more details.
Thanks for your feedback on Windows XP Service Pack 3.

I downloaded the RC2, English version from the download site, however, when it is being extracted, I get the following error: Extraction of i386\System32\smss.exe failed; Access Denied. When I click on OK, the extraction stopped and I have no way of installing the SP.
Is there a problem with the English Version?

I recently downloaded and installed the New XP_SP3 build 3311 (RC2), I downloaded directly from Microsoft Download Center.
I installed the revised version and found it to be some what sluggish and there are some problems in computer reaction time.
The New build works but not as good as the XP_SP3 build 3264 which I thought that it worked OK and it functioned 89%, the 11% lost had direct problems with IE 7 which is not included in the download.
There is a problem of course in deleting the upgrade's, It will take out your essential drivers outside of the mainboard drivers.
I installed it without un-installing the RC1 (build 3264).
Of course I will let this run for the next 30-40 days and maybe by then the RC3 new build would had been released.
At that point I will do a clean install of XP along with the SP3_RC3.
In regards to the build 3311 it seems to be working but the performance is dragging" RECOMMENDATIONS".
Again, I should had un-installed the RC1 build 3264 but for my understanding even those whom did it right also ended up with the same end result (SLUGGISH).

All:
I had some issues with my PC and could not copy the RC2 build onto my PC, nor was I able to install the SP. So, I tried to follow another path. I obtained the original Windows XP install files, slipstreamed to SP2 and SP3 RC2. Then, I ran setup and selected to upgrade my OS with the SP3 RC2 Slipstreamed version. The OS installed but I had some issues with installing the ICW files. The Installation found the files on my installation folder, but for some reason it did not want to install them. Upon completion, I had to manually update the WMI Registry settings so I can get WMI to start. Otherwise, the Windows Firewall, which depends on the WMI service as well as the RPC service would not start, which also affected the Services MMC information, etc...
Once I did that, the OS started just fine. I did have to download and install IE7. The Internet browsing is fine. The one issue I have is with Windows Media Player. It takes forever to display my Library, so I opted out and installed iTUNES to manage my music files.
This will probalby be fixed on the next release. In the mean time, the upgrade seems to be doing fine.

Johnny

Please send all files reuested below to "Atul <<$Dot$>> Kumar <<&At&>> Microsoft (Dot) com". Replace all names with the symbols :-) I am with WMI team here.
So, basically, you took XP RTM (Gold bits) and slipstreamed SP2 on that. On top of that, you again slipstreamed SP3 RC2.
- Let me know which ICW files gave you trouble.
- What registry settings had to be updated? At what stage, did you update the settings?
- WMI was working fine before upgrade?
- Which files were giving problem in installation?
- There are WMI logs in %windir%\system32\wbem\logs folder. Can you send that to me after zipping them?
- There will be setup logs inside %windir% like setupact, setuperr, setuplog, msdtcsetup etc. Please send those to me after zipping them.
- Do you see any errors in your system event logs? Can you send me the system event list also after exporting the whole of it?

That is correct!
- Let me know which ICW files gave you trouble.
If you go to the i386 Folder from the XP CD, all the files that started with ICW* would not install. Additionally, EXPLORE.EX_ would not install.
- What registry settings had to be updated? At what stage, did you update the settings?
In the ZIP files that I sent, there is a REG file. It contains the registry update that I needed to make to get it started. Additionally, the BAT file contains the DLLs that I needed to register.
- WMI was working fine before upgrade?
Yes! After the upgrade, it would not start unless I made the changes that I am posting.
- Which files were giving problem in installation?
As listed under item 1.
- There are WMI logs in %windir%\system32\wbem\logs folder. Can you send that to me after zipping them?
All part of the attached ZIP Files.

Atul,
I took the BITS for XP from my MSDN DVD and Slipstreamed SP2 onto it. Then, I slepstreamed SP3 RC2 onto it. I then used the updated BITS and ran setup / chose to upgrade / enter the license key and continued...
Following the first reboot, preparation and installation started, etc... During the installation phase, the ICW* files from the source files did not want to install. I manually navigated to the directory where they were on my local drive, found the required file, but it did not want to install. I selected to cancel those specific files installation, which also included the EXPLORE.EX_ file. When I was passed that area, the installation continued and finished.
After rebooting, windows mini setup ran for IE6, and loaded my desktop icons for my local profile. I then tried to look at the Windows Firewall and relaized that it did not start. The reason was that WMI did not start and was completely missing from the Services area. I then had to manually update my registry and register the WMI DLLs, as noted below:

If you are able to get your system back to pre-sp3 install, doing an "in-place-upgrade" works very well. Take your sp2 machine, copy the contents of your sp3 slipstream to your HD (say c:\newSP3) Then go to a command promt (start>run) then type c:\newsp3\i386\winnt32.exe then press enter. You will be asked if you wish to install or upgrade. Choose upgrade. Enter your CD key when asked. Windows will reboot a total two times and you will be at your familiar desktop with everything as it was before hand, and you will be sp3.

Hi Kevin,
Sorry for missing the feedback on the general XP newsgroup.
As we understand, you are facing an IE crash on all versions of XP SP3.
Can you please try the reg key solution pointed to by Thomas?
In case that does not solve the issue, can you please take a full process dump for the crashing process (IE) and share with us.
1. Start --> run --> drwtsn32
2. Enable "Dump symbol table", "dump all thread contexts", "append to existing log file" and "create crash dump file"
3. Select "Full" as the crash dump type
4. Ensure the Crash dump path has free disk space
5. Repro the issue
A full process dump would be formed in the path mentioned in the "Crash Dump" field.
Please collect the dump, and application event viewer log and share with us.
The size of these files may exceed the exchange server limits. In that case, please share you email id with us and we would create a file transfer workspace for you.
Thanks

Any idea how to get RC2 to install, or should I abandon all hope and avoid future headaches by starting over with XPwSP2 clean install and do it the way I was supposed to.
The whole reason for the fresh install, is my admin box had a million progs installed and uninstalled and I wanted to freshen up my stuff with only the core stuff I still use... seems like if I am going to be bugging up my machine already, I am back to my old laptop for now...
You know how you have to rebuild your box every so often... this is a nearly weeklong process to do all the reinstalls and registrations of programs, so I would hate to start off on the wrong foot... especially if when the final version comes out, that isn't going to be able to be installed.
Please advise.
Thanks,

Hi Captain Clam,
I would suggest you to do a clean installation of XP SP2, and then install SP3 RC2 on top of it. Once SP3 Final is released, uninstall the SP3 RC2 (Beta software), and install SP3 final on your XP SP2. If you did a slipstreamed of XP and SP3 RC1/2, you cannot install SP3 RC2 build 3311 on top of your current build.

Captain Clam,
What Thomas mentions is correct.
Thats the advised mechanism to move to RC2, and future releases of SP3.

Thomas and Shashank:
What if one were to keep a default RTM version of XP/SP2 around and simply slipstream all RCs of SP3 to it as they are released and conduct an Upgrade of the existing OS? One would always get a semi-clean install and keep one's current settings and other installed software and components.
My rationale here is to avoid a RC SP3 issue that would require a clean format and reinstall of the OS and its related components.
What are your thoughts on this?
Tks,

Johnny,
If you reinstall your XP periodically, my suggestion for you is to make a clean installation of XP SP2, update Windows on windowsupdate, install any/all software you needs, and make some clone/ghost images ready to play with. Recloning an OS image on a machine should takes less than half an hour. I'll never do a Windows on Windows upgrade again, never will. I have many bad experiences before, but that is another story.

Having the Same Problem
I'm actually suprised I can type now, and will type fast before my computer has another seizure. I am learning more about my dilemma, but realize this problem is tied to the function key. My computer (Inspiron 1520, Core2Duo 2.0GHz, 2GB Ram, 120GB hdd) will be working "fine", and then, all of a sudden freeze. The CPU goes apesh!t, and the keyboard freezes momentarily, and then, only buttons with the blue icon (related to the function key) respond. Memory usage is at 50% or better, and CPU is at 80% or higher. There are no viruses (unless Norton, Adaware, and Windows Defender can not find it) It will last for about 5 minutes, occur 2-3 times an hour, and leave me helpless. *** characters come from other keys that eventually respond, and the volume(?!) bar goes to 100%
If anyone has ever heard/seen this, please let me know.

Hi,

1. Does the issue occur only when you use the function key?
2. Does the issue occur if using another keyboard?
3. When did the issue begin to occur? Have any changes been made on the computer recently, such as an installation or upgrade?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Shell Extensins
I was wondering if these are on the SG roadmap ?
Currently, its one future that I am lacking greatly for small apps that yet are most commonly used through shell extensions (I don't even know if I have winrar / winzip on the start menu)
However, this feature might be included in 4.5, and I have missed it perhaps? To be honest I haven't tested it (25h day anyone?)
Loads of apps work great in softgrid, but having to integrate the shell-extension via registry hacks manually (and thus creating an uninstaller) really makes us choose not to sequence them (the point was to NOT effect the operating system)

There is no "standard" way to give users virtualized application shell extensions, but there is a scripted way (but I wouldn't recommend it). Here's how:
Sequence the application or extension as you would normally do, then add a script to the osd that kills explorer.exe on pre launch (you can use a command like TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe) and starts it again. Because the parent process of the "new" explorer.exe is your softgrid environment, the desktop and thus all shell related sequenced components are made visible to the user.
The downside of this approach is that you would have to really think wisely about how and when to close this virtualized shell session and execute your timing ideas with scripts or even custom made applications that monitor your main program's state.
Once the user is using this re-launched explorer.exe, access to the Q: drive is as open as it would be from any virtualized application, meaning that the user could browse the contents of the package root directory of the application on the Q: drive by simply using explorer.
Good luck!

Well, thats a cheap and bad workaround in my point of view (just as bad as mine)
Considering the handle of FTAs have been built in the distribution (meaning that the clients handle them, and receives the removal or adding of them either from MSI or server) why can't shell extension be?
Of course it is "more" of a change in the OS - but still one of the features that I really lack in a managed desktop environment.
For a TS / citrix this isn't as important, but for desktops this is a really horrible lack of a feature and when I participate in pre-sell meetings and I honestly have to say that some applications aren't suited for appvirt due to the fact that the most common-way of access is cut off.
Yes there are work-arounds (just as the "pre-load script" looking at other things that I hoped were fixed before beta of 4.5 was released) but none of them add simplicity in managing or the built-in support that I am looking or.
You fixed the pre-load (well, in theory - haven't been set in production yet but the issue is addressed seriously) - why not this ?
------------------------------------
Reply:
I agree with that being a cheap and horrible workaround (that's why I didn't recommend it being actually used), but consider what you're asking.
Shell extensions are read by the shell (explorer) when launched by userinit at post-login. The only way to make them accessible is to have explorer load them during its launch. They are the extended context menu's and dialog manipulations that are stored in COM objects.
What would make this work natively in SoftGrid is if the client recognized shell extensions in SG projects like it recognizes file extensions in SG projects. This would also require the virtualization layer to be loaded along with the required virtualized applications as a the parent of the user shell, so the client installation would have to modify the winlogon\userinit registry value to accommodate this feature.
This would open op a whole new set of possibilities, but also some horrible problems involving roaming profiles, user documents and profile size quota. But if done correctly it would also solve the demand for virtualized IE plug-ins for physically loadable Internet Explorer sessions or any other virtualized per-system configuration changes. It would elevate Microsoft Application Virtualization from simply being application virtualization underwear to a Virtualized Desktop configuration management tool.

Currently, if the thread is lenghty, (preview) may, or may not have all entries. Sometimes I waste two clicks and some scrolling and still have to open the thread to view the latest posts.
Alternatively, allow an option to display the thread from Last to First -instead of the current First to Last.

Were changing preview for the next release a bit.
Here's what we're doing:
- Removed the "Preview" text and put an arrow to the left of the thread title, however we've made the whole title area "hot" so you can click anywhere to expand or collapse preview, it's feeling much better to use to far.
- Added a close to the bottom and a link to the full thread at the bottom so you don't have to scroll back up to do those
- We will still show only the first 20 posts but have a link at the bottom that says something like "show next 20 posts" which will pull the next 20 inline
For our next.next release I want to get in a quick reply, so a reply link next to each post in the preview that will bring up the reply editor and not take you away to the thread page to do this.
We don't want to add full functionality since you should go to the thread page itself to do more detailed edits to a thread like voting, moderator features, quoting. The idea of preview is to keep is as a "light" view where users can perform 90% of what they need there, which most impotantly is reading and replying.
Let me know your thoughts on this!

Hyper-V woes...
Hello, I am testing hyper-v on an HP proliant DL 585 g2 server with 2 dual core 2.2 opterons, and 8GB of mem. The bios is up to date. The followings are my .02 cents, and I hope I am having the worst time with this.
I am not new to virtualization. I am the admin of our ESX 3 server, and have been running ESX since 2.0.1, so as far as the industry goes, I feel I am not a rookie when it comes to running virtual machines. I am not trying to be impartial, I am just stating I have almost 4 years running VM's in a production environment.
We have 4 hosts, and well over 60 VM's running in production, with about 20 test VM's. All OS'es are XP or Server 2003. After I set server 2008 Enterprise on the server, I enabled Hyper-V, because I have been waiting for a long time for it.
First thing I did, is create an XP pro test machine. No big deal, right? When I fired it up to image with imagex, I noticed there was no Ethernet support in the VM when running WinPE 2.1. OK, no problem, i'll just load the drivers while running the VM with the Integration disk loaded. So i navigated to the dir with the inf, and did a drvload to load up the vmnic.inf (I did all of the inf's just to be on the safe side) , and did an ipconfig /release and then a renew. No go. I checked I had the network adapter connected, and it was. So apparently no network support in WinPE 2.1......
Strike 1
Ok, no problem, I can make an ISO with my XP Pro wim file on it, and load up another dvd rom drive with it, and apply my wim image from there. Can't read the wim file... What the hell....
Strike 2
OK, I'll create a vhd file, mount it, and copy the damn thing over already. Then, there are no tools in Hyper-v to do so. Wow...
Strike 3
OK, i'll just load the thing from CD Rom like I used to do in 2002. Grab original VLK XP CD ROM from Enterprise License kit, check. Insert CD in to server, check. Verify the VM is set to use the physical cd rom, check. Load xp.....took forever... (over 1.5 hours)
and the it comes to the well known screen to adjust the screen resolution. I can't use my mouse. The box is not in focus, and I can not alt tab it to hit ok on the box. WTF? Restart the VM, boots up log in. ok, now I am gonna install the integration tools, so I can use my mouse and check this out! Click on this, and bam! "Sorry, you have to use this with XP SP3, even though it was just released like 2 weeks ago, and you haven't even begun thinking about deploying it yet!" Oh my....
/fail
SO, needless to say, I have not had a painful experience like this, and my confidence in Hyper-V as dropped. I am hoping that Hyper-v is still open to adding new things and features, I would assume since it was a Microsoft product that it would "just work". I am not giving up hope or trying to cast a bad light on this, I just hope the usability will become more friendly and they will iron out the bugs like slow OS loads and that unnecessary requirement for SP3 to be on XP before those tools will load.
Keep it up, and I hope to see an RC soon that works much nicer than this one!

I fully understand where you are coming from. I too have been working with hypervisors since the ESX 201 days.
First of all, many of the issues that you have are rooted in the fact that Hyper-V is not ESX. They function differently, and with different assumptions. The other issues were XP.
You had no NIC in XP becuase your VM NIC (by default in Hyper-V) is 'synthetic', not emulated as it is with ESX. If you change your NIC to a "Legacy Network Adapter" then you will have a NIC that functions from the start (this is what is necessary to PXE booting, or RIS, etc.)
Also, yes, the screen thing is really annoying. I had to reboot my XP guest to be able to get ast the default video config. Who ever noticed before that when that dialog appears that the focus of the dialog box is immediately lost??? (Which is the root of the problem).
I am not dismissing your problems - Microsoft needs to hear them. They need to understand them.
At the same time - this is a brand new product, and it still is in the oven, the baking is not finished. Where ESX has been out for ..gee.. a few years.

Having used virtualisation for a while now it's quite easy....
1. Create vm
2. Attach ISO file image of OS install CD to vm (ESX and VS2005 / Hyper-v)
3. Install OS (with XP ISO it took only 19 minutes till 1st logon with hyper-v RC0)
4. Prep as a template using sysprep or newsid
