WARNING for Critical Sysyems: XP SP3 and New Daylight Savings Time - Tme Zones

To Everyone,

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=942763

This KB94273 is not in sp3 or was incorrectly intergrated into sp3!

I tested Daylight Savings time for the United States on my computer and the clock for spring changes on the 1st Sunday

in
April 2:00AM and the fall last Sunday in Oct 2:00 AM! The new times should be 2nd Sunday in March 2:00 AM and

I ran a test for microsoft with slipped streamed Windows XP SP3 and the Daylight Savings Times for the United States are

wrong!!

Hot Fix KB94273 was either in correctly put in SP3 or it was not put in the service pack and the Hot Fix List was accidently

listed  incorrectly. It has been confirmed about the New Daylight Savings Time not working for the United States! You will

have to apply this Hot Fix listed above!

BizTalk 2006 v/s BizTalk R2 - General View

I had started using BizTalk just 6 months ago and also the industry was in the process of implementing BizTalk 2006. Most of the applications needed to be migrated to BizTalk 2006 from BT 2004. But suddenly Microsoft announces about the new version of BizTalk (R2). Yes, I agree  it comes with much greater features then the previous one. But what will happen to those application which are just migrated to BTS 2006.

Also the WWF workflows are not compatible with biztalk and there are no WSE 3.0 adapter available for BTS while there was WSE 2.0. So what will happen to the application who are running on WSE 2.0 or BizTalk 2006 -- we have to upgrade it but thus the upgrdation comes free of cost. As each client wants to take advantage of new feature of BTS , now again each and every single application needs to be transfered to higher version of BizTalk ( thus expending more money on License cost and implementation).

Reply:

Hi,

BizTalk 2006 R2 adds new features, little if any changes have been made to the actual runtime. You should have no problems deploying your existing application into an R2 environment.

As for the WSE functionality, we now have WCF adapters in R2 which should give you much of the funcionality that the WSE adapters were providing. It may be a good option to migrate to useing WCF adapters if you decide to upgrade.

Alan

Hi kr.Nitesh,

WCF Adapter, that shipped with R2, not only provides WSE functionalities but also , lots of other ommunication/message exchange patterns. WCF is an rapidly being industry-driving framework for messaging solutins.

One other thing that must taken into account is incerceptor. Especially, WCF interceptor allows the user fined-tuned info. about their business performance.

For WF integration, there are some ongoing works so as to leverage best sides of WF together with Biztalk.

Hope answer was convincing.

Hi Alan,

Does BTS R2, WCF adaptor provides support for WSE 3.0?

WCF supports the set of standards: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms734776.aspx (and subarticles)

------------------------------------
Reply:

From experience the WCF adapters do not work with WSE 2.0 if the WSE service is defining policy assertion (WS-Policy) and some other WSE 2.0 scenarios. The only article out there about interoperability between WSE 2.0 and WCF is this:

http://wcf.netfx3.com/content/WindowsCommunicationFoundationWCFInteroperabilityandMigrationwithWSE20.aspx

You can see there that it's probably only wire interoperable. You could potentially follow the article's recommendations and configure the WCF custom adapter in BizTalk (make sure you check the "What won't work on the wire between WSE 2.0 and WCF" part of the article before even starting).

My recommendation is, if you can't upgrade the WSE 2.0 service to WCF due to some restriction like "that's all the client can handle", install WSE 2.0 with the latest service pack and then the WSE 2.0 adapter with the latest service pack on the BizTalk R2 server and it'll save you a lot of trouble. It works fine.

With WSE 3.0 with WCF it is a little easier as they are much more interoperable. Just have a look around on the web and there are a few articles about it, like this on.

Hope this helps.

Right Hand side of forums - content box for product specific links wanted

I'd like to see an administrator or moderator option to have a box in the right hand part of the forum browser window with specific information for that forum.
For example, when Windows Live OneCare moves to this environment, having a list of links to other useful and related sites would be what I'd want to see - the Wiki, the official site, the team blog, the member center, etc.
I know that they can be in accouncements, but in the OneCare environment, that means the announcement sticks with the topic folder and not at the top level of the product forum. I would see this list as content that would appear on every page since there is that space at the right already used by other modules. I'd give up the top answerer space for that. :-)

Thanks for the suggestion, Stephen. We're definitely looking at ways to expose "related good stuff" on every page of our sites in a data-driven way. What I'm hearing from you though is closer to a list links related to this forum that won't likely change often, but would be manually updated by a moderator.

Part of the strategy behind enabling user tagging is to enable "virtual forums" that center around a tag rather than around static editorial decisions at Microsoft. This is why we'd like to take a data-driven approach to providing "related" links.

Thoughts on that approach? I suppose it doesn't have to be an either/or proposition...

I think I'd like both.
When I first though of what I defined as a list of related links to external sites appearing on the pages of the forum, my thoughts were not just links. I was thinking along the lines of what announcements do today, but by placing it at the side, it was more "in your face" for the typical visitor to the OneCare forums. They end up in the forum by doing a web search or because Help in OneCare directed them there for a specific problem they were trying to solve. When that user is faced with the forum environment, assuming they aren't already savvy forum users, they need information now. Giving them instructional information in the sidebar area, rather than "hiding" it in an announcement that kind of looks just like any other thread, might make it more visible. I then decided that I'd prefer a list of resource links that might lead to external sites of pages that give them the help they seek. Many visitors to the OneCare forum get very lost despite the collection of FAQ annoucements we provide. Since the forum post structure is fairly rigid, leading them out to a wiki lets us organize useful information in a way that we can't in the forum and lets us do this "unofficially" as we moderators are not restricted by whatever processes are in place to update the official Help system of the much loved <g> knowledgebase articles in the support environment.
The virtual forum idea is great, but I don't think that more than 1 or 2% of OneCare users finding their way to the forum have a clue about tags, let alone the search box on the forum page to find the information they really need.

Can't install SQL Server Standard x64 on Windows Server 2008 Web x64

I have Windows Server 2008 Web x64 up–and–running.  However, SQL Server 2005 x64 will not install.  It says there's a compatibility issue.

I cannot find any solution to this on–line.  I hope this isn't some ridiculous role limitation...

In case any MDT devs are looking, I have an idea for the next MDT version

Then again, maybe it's already there and I don't see it.
Would be really neat to have a section to add/remove/modify registry settings to apply to a build/task.

Pefect example:  add/import a registry setting that will disable ipv6 on images that will be deployed.
You could place it in the "Distribution Share" portion of the Workbench.

Then have a "registry" button on the properties of individual builds to pick  which registry mods will apply to that specific build, either on the "general" or "OS info" tab.

Clicking the button would produce a list with add/remove registry entries from the Distribution Share folder that was created.

This would help cover some areas WSIM doesn't.

Just an idea  Smile

Fixed IE7 crash on exit...finally

Hi

IE6 was crashing and after trying some posted sol'ns, I gave up and installed IE7.  IE7 would crash every time on exit ( even with initial web page set to about:blank ).  The crash info indicated ntdll.dll.  What I did was goto addon mgmt and disable googl, yahoo, research etc addons ( left apple, adobe stuff ), and tried it again, no crashes.  Then I re-enabled what I disabled and IE7 does not crash anymore. <<  TOUCHING WOOD >>.

When IE 7 crashes the dialog box will show you a dump file name in my temp folder, butt, and I only use that word with MS products, the dump file is conveniantly deleted when IE exits!

This forum is moving the week of 5/27

Microsoft has created a new forums platform (MSDN | TechNet | Expression | Microsoft) with increased performance, stability, and an improved user experience. During the week of 5/27 this forum will be moving to the new platform. To make sure this is a smooth transition, we want everyone using this forum to have a chance to try out the new forums in advance, and give feedback. We've created a Sandbox forum, where you can create threads and try out functionality, and a suggestions forum where you can give us your feedback. Please take some time to go to the new forums today and let us know what you think.

On the day the forum moves to the new platform, a post will be made letting you know the process has been started, and the forum will be locked to new posts. Once the process is complete, a final post to the forum will be made letting you know the forum has moved.

1.       All posts in the forum will be preserved

2.       Any points you've received for replies will move with you (on a per forum basis)

3.       Any bookmarks to this forum or threads within this forum will redirect to their new location

4.       Your "My Threads" will be preserved on the new platform

The only thing you'll need to do after migration is set Windows Live Alerts for any threads you were tracking.

If you have feedback, let us know in the suggestions forum or contact me directly at Andrew.Brenner at Microsoft.com

Thanks,

Andrew

Concept Release of my new utility

I have released a new utility (Softgrid Search and Found) to search applications and packages from the softgrid database,

This tool can be used to search applications & packages published on the Microsoft SoftGrid server.
This tool might be most useful for people supporting the SoftGrid environments.

Softgrid Version Supported:
Due to the reason that the softgrid database tables keep changing only the following SG versions are presently supported:
1. 4.0.0.524
2. 4.1.1.302
3. 4.5.0.467

I do not have access to other versions of softgrid server thus was able to add them in this package. If someone can send me the database details of other version of softgrid server then i might be able to add them.

As usual all comments/ suggestions and bugs reporting are welcomed.
The utility can be downloaded from
Code Snippet

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=210688.

Brief documentation is also available to download in "Documentation section"

new tool: softgrid package manager.

I have developed a new tool which can be used along with softgrid client to publish the softgrid applications without the need of softgrid server.
It can be downloaded from

thanks and regards

Very excellent!  I have already tested this for myself, and have given this to one of my testers for home use.

The only issue I had setting it up was on transfer from a DVD-ROM disk.  It dosen't remove the Read-Only setting off the files when they reach the cache destination, and so it can't re-write the OSD files and set up the icons.  Maybe something to add to the next version?

NNTP Access

I would really like nntp access to any forums.

The web interface while nice eye candy will always dissuade me from scanning the forum for questions that I might know the answer to.

If you need to support newer features like "mark as answer", then perhaps a reply to a given item with a code [MARKASANSWER] or something similar would suffice.

Generally I spend more time in the newsgroups answering questions than I do asking them so I would have less use for this, but I think to not have nntp access cuts off a lot of users who might otherwise make a valuable contribution.

Thanks

System not resuming from sleep after installing SP1

I installed vista sp1 two days back then I found issue with my system. When i close my laptop lid its going to sleep without any problem, its fine but  when I open the lid back its not resuming, instead of resuming its simply rebooting thesystem every time and I lost all unsaved data every time

Initially I didn't realize that this is happening because of sp1.I roll backed my system to 3 days before, then it's working fine now. Now I realized that this happened because of sp1.

After installing sp1 i not even found the laptop lid options which are generally available in control panel power options.

Avast 4.8.1169 must read

Apperently this version of Avast breaks Xp's System Restore functionality.

Pleast get the latest version available for download. Fixes this problem. Users that count on restoring to an older version of the OS get an error message. Can't restore to this date, please choice another restore point

*(Chossen)*.

Best choice is to disable this program. Prior to installing Sp3.

This gets in the way of people trying to update to Sp3. and have to restore to an earlier point.

Editor Control considerations

My compliments to MS on these great new boards. This editor seems really nice.

I have a suggestion re maximum posting size. I would suggest that it be larger than 50 KB. From the old board many of us cut and paste code into WORD and then onto the board. I guess it is formatting that takes up space but it would be helpful for larger code samples.

It would be great if the editor maintained formatting right from the IDE.

[EWS] Recurrence EndDate element time conversion bug

Hi,

I don't know if this is fixed in SP1 but I believe there is a problem with the EndDate.  I send:

<EndDate>2007-09-10</EndDate>

and I see this stored as:

12:00 AM, 9/10/2007 (in property 0x8236)

but it should be:

4:00 AM, 9/10/2007

since the recurrence time zone is EST.  The same happens for the start date.  The net effect is the occurrence on 9/10/2007 is missing.

Thanks.

Reply:

Well, I guess I like talking to myself Wink

This issue seems to be fixed in SP1, but the .Net deserialization issue still remains, that is, when the EndDate is deserialized by the C# proxy code, it interprets this date value as a UTC day and converts it to the local date/time equivalent (i.e. 8PM of the previous day for EST in DST).  The net effect is that the last occurence is missing from the recurrence pattern.

This is the same issue that affects the TimeChangeType element and which the following workaround was provided in

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb738399(EXCHG.80).aspx

So my question now is, can we get a list of all the elements affected by this issue?  And will this issue ever be resolved without manual modifications to the generated proxy code and/or EWS wsdl/xsd's ?

Thanks.

The iso sxsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso has an error in the documentation. On the second screen, there is a link for "What to know before installing service pack 3". The link carries you to service pack 2 instructions.

Source Code Strings should be different color (C#)

When formatting source code with color, the strings should have a different color instead of blue since blue is for language identifiers.  Just a little usability improvement.  I've included some C# code below from a VS 2008 SDK Sample to demonstrate.

10             string connString = GetConnString();

14                 return false;

17             Process process = new Process();
18             process.StartInfo.ErrorDialog = true;
19             process.StartInfo.FileName = String.Format("{0}/Currituck/WorkItem.aspx?artifactMoniker={1}", connString, id);
20             process.Start();

Error message when you start Windows Vista: "The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information"

I Have been reading forums for weeks trying to resolve a problem with my Vista PC. Was error with Boot/BCD and another one which came up after restarting it after startup tool checker in repair \windows\system32\ config\system corrupt or missing. Have been booting the Vista CD and using repair function. Hasn't been finding the hard drive. When looking through forums and help came across  Disk Part heres a link for more help http://searchwincomputing.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid68_gci1040183,00.html. You will need to select partition and drives but this can be done by typing 'list disk, press enter' then type 'select disk 0 or 1 or 2 whatever you need. then do same for partition type 'list .........

I used the clean function and thought SHI*T wiped off all my information off me computer because said had 300GB free. restarted my computer boot from disk again then do the repair stuff and click on top one check for startup problems it will check it. When told restart it and it loads up your old OS.

I currently havent restarted it because i need to do a backup of me old data so if it does't work ive got it all back.

Hope this helps. Would like to thank all other forums because took me ages to sort it all out.
