Creating multiple authorities

Creating multiple authorities

In the last few days I've heard several people (including Roger http://oakleafblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-to-get-list-of-your-ssds-accounts.html) say that you are limited to just one authority per account.  I'm not sure what the origin of this is, but this is not true.  You should be able to create multiple authorities.  If for some reason you can't, let us know - it's a bug.

Deploying UserControls in virtual directory using Solution deployment mechanism

I was trying to find a better approach to deploy my solution that has webpart wrapping usercontrols (.ascx) file.

Since the requirement was to deploy this in to the virtual directory, I found this is not supported by solution deployment mechnism.

Then I found some good link about the Solution Schema, and it has an element name ApplicationResources, this deploys the files the wpResource folder of the virtual directory.

I guess this I can use to deploy my user controls ascx files. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi Viren,

I thought ApplicationResources was to deploy localized resources (i.e. .res files).  I'm not sure if that can be used to deploy an .ascx into the UserControls folder for your web app.  I haven't tried it with a user control, but you should be able to get it to work with a ClassResource element in manifest.xml, but it would be stored in wpresources, not usercontrols.  This should still work, however, you would just dynamically load your control from this folder instead.

Let us know if this works.

Question on Name Resolution

Hello,

I'm running 3 machines on my LAN (a Windows Server 2003, a Vista Professional, and XP Home).

Each of these machines have a Host Name defined under the same WORKGROUP.

However, it appears that only the Windows Server's hostname is able to be resolved.  For example, when I type "ping <server's hostname>" on my Vista's command line, or type "<server's hostname>", it resolves to both the IP and the Sharepoint web page of the Windows Server.  On the other hand, if I type "ping <Vista's hostname>" it can't resolve.

I'm not running any WINS, DNS, or AD in the network so I don't understand how the Windows Server managed to get its hostname broadcasted out to the Vista, and Vista doesn't know how to do this.

Can someone please shed some light on this?  Thanks.

Reply:

Hi,

Technically, Windows Vista computer and Windows Server 2003 computer should can ping each other by hostname.

I built a test environment and my computers can ping each other.

Given the situation, please confirm the following points:

1.Did you disable all firewall (including Windows Firewall)?

2.Can Windows Server 2003 ping Windows Vista by using IP address?

If the issue still persists, I suggest enabling Netmon on both machines to capture the network packets for further research:

1) Download NetMon3.1 from the following website and install it on the Windows Vista and Windows 2003 machines:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&DisplayLang=en

2) Log onto the machines, right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.1.

3) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 window, click
Create a new capture tab …

4) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.

5) After that, press F10 to start NetMon.

Note: Please start NetMon on both machines.

6) On the Windows Vista machine, please ping Windows 2003 machine. Then, on the Windows 2003 machine, please ping Windows Vista machine.

7) Go back to the NetMon window and press F11 to stop the NetMon.

8) Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file and upload them to the following space:

In addition, please understand that analyze/troubleshoot this kind of issue may be time consuming. If it is urgent, I'd like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service for instant assistance.

Add copyright in footer

Hi,

How do i add footer with copyright text in MOSS 2007.

regards,
iffi

iffi

Reply:
Hi iffi,

The basic answer is you can edit the master page for your site and embed the necessary text you would want.  This can be edited using SharePoint Designer (SPD), or you can deploy a new one using a module-type feature.

Keep in mind with MOSS you you have two types of sites (publishing and non-publishing) and each use different master pages.  So depending on how you've set up your sites and site collections, you may need to edit more than one master page if you use SPD.  This is one of the advantages of using a feature.

If you provide more details on what you're trying to do, we should be able to give you a more specific answer.

Does this help?

*FEATURE REQUEST* Bluetooth Peripheral Device Drivers

I am a Blackberry user and the number of us is growing more and more. Blackberry only uses Microsoft's bluetooth drivers to connect to its Desktop Manager app which allows for syncing, backup, etc. It cannot use the manufacturer's bluetooth drivers. Microsoft's bluetooth drivers, however, leave something to be desired. They unfortunately, do not capture all of the bluetooth services offered by Blackberry devices. One of which is the A/V Remote Control feature, which I know I would use and I'm sure many others would too. I've also noted some others such as Audio Gateway and more. If you feel that these features would be useful, leave a comment here to let Microsoft know how important these drivers are to us Crackberry users.

Note: When attaching our Blackberry's via bluetooth most of us have 2 bluetooth peripheral device's that drivers are not found for. These are obviously the main items, however, I know that the blackberry is also capable of some other services which are not installed on the PC.

Reply:

While the Microsoft Bluetooth drivers may work for the basic Bluetooth functions of the Blackberry, any device specific features would have to come from the manufacturer/owner of that device (RIM).

Microsoft does collaborate with third party hardware device manufacturers to help them develop Windows compatible drivers, but only at the request of those manufacturers. They will even use Windows Update to help the manufacturer distribute new device drivers, but this is a decision made by the manufacturer and they still retains ownership of those drivers.

Also, a technical support forum is not a good way to give feature request feedback to Microsoft. They have specific sources that collect user feedback and pass this information on to the proper department or product group.

Long Passwords Cause Beta 2 Install to Fail

An issue has been identified in the Beta 2 installer.  This issue manifests itself by causing the installation of FSOCS to fail when the length of the "domain\username" is less than the length of the corresponding password field when specifying the service account credentials.

We recommend that customers use a service account with a longer username or a shorter password (taking security related complexity into account where applicable) to avoid hitting the issue noted above.  This issue will be fixed and provided to TAP and CAG customers as part of the Beta 2 Refresh release.

Thanks,

ShreyS

In beta 1, there is no such issue. Can you tell me why this changed in Beta 2 ?

Thanks.

David

------------------------------------
Reply:

The Forefront for Office Communications Server installer was updated to perform additional validation of the information provided during the setup process.  One of the associated changes included adding validation to check that the supplied service account was a member of the proper domain groups (i.e. RTCUniversalServerAdmins and RTCProxyUniversalServices).  The username/password issue described in this thread was introduced when this check was added.  In the Beta 1 installer, this validation was not being done; as a result, if the service account was not a member of the proper groups, FSOCS may not function as expected.  The Beta 2 installer performs to check to be able to inform the administrator that the condition is not met.

In addition to validation, the installer has also been updated so that it attempts to query the Notification Agent SIP server settings.  On domain-joined roles (i.e. Director, Front-end, or SE) the SIP server and SIP URI will be pre-populated based on the available information in Active Directory for whatever account is specified as the user that will send IM notifications.

Web Service in Same Application Pool as MOSS

Hi,

I've just resolved an issue that I want to share.

Problem:

I deployed a web service to production that would update documents in a document library.  It worked fine in dev but not on production. I was getting the error below.

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. ---> System.IO.FileNotFoundException: The Web application at http://servername.blah.blah.com could not be found. Verify that you have typed the URL correctly. If the URL should be serving existing content, the system administrator may need to add a new request URL mapping to the intended application.
at Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSite..ctor(SPFarm farm, Uri requestUri, Boolean contextSite, SPUserToken userToken)
   at Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSite..ctor(String requestUrl)
   at SharePointObjects..ctor(String businessUnit)
   at SIMDocumentRepositry.CreateUpdatePortfolioList(String businessUnit, PortfolioListItem[] portfolios)
--- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Resolutions:

- The web service needs to be on the same machine (in my case this was so)

- The web service must run under the same application pool as MOSS else it treats the code as if it's on another machine.

Hope this saves someone some time Smile

Hi,
To fix that make sure that
-the application run from local server not from remote
-user run this application at least owner on this site
-user run this application have access to content DB of sharepoint site

good luck

Reply:

Tarek,

The third point that you mentioned is appropriate and correct in most of the production scenarios.

"user run this application have access to content DB of sharepoint site"

To be precise, the identity of the application pool that is running the web service should have access to the sharepoint content db.

Access Course 5452 misunderstand linking vs copying

It states in the Advantages of Linking object in Access.
"You do not need to create a copy of the data in Access 2007. You can modify the data in Access 2007 without affecting the original data in the source program."

The first sentence is correct and I agree with it. The second sentence is wrong. If you are linking to another object you must go to the source to make the change. You cannot make the change in Access without it affecting the source.

Am I totally wrong? Can you have Access link to something, but still make changes in Access that will not change the source and will not be over written the next time the link is updated.

Hi SherriLynn,

The statement in the course is correct, as far as it goes.  When using a linked table in Access 2007, you can make changes to the data without changing the linked file.  However, when the linked file is changed, any conflicting changes made in Access will be overwritten.  For more information on linked tables, please see

Bug: Posting long one-line code is not visible when scrollbars appear

Bug:  Using the Format Code Block button, if you post a long line of code that eventually requires scrollbars to be displayed on the page, the line of code is not visible.  Here's an example:

System.Diagnostics.Trace.WriteLine(System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.ManagedThreadId);

I don't have my browser window maximized but I believe it is more than 800x600 at this point.  But, if you do see the code, try to set your browser's window state to Normal and resize the width until the scrollbars appear.

Also, I didn't set the max snippet width/height.

SQL Server 2008 Upgrade Advisor compatability problem

Why can't you make Upgrade advisor compatible with Windows Server 2000?  If you can run it for an upgrade from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2008, doesn't it make sense that a SQL Server 2000 install would be running on Windows Server 2000?

Integration services on windows server 2003 x64

Hi Everyone, in my Hyper-v i install a virtual machine windows server 2003 Enterprise SP2 x64. when i started to install this virtual machine i can't use the mouse. Also when I finished to install this virtual machine i can't use the mouse. Well when i try to install Integration Services it failed. I also install  virtual machine windows server 2008 x64 and i can use the mouse.

Somebody have any idea.

Thanks.

Is the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise the R2 edition?  From my own experience R2 does not let you install the integrated services. I had to fall back to I guess for a better lack of term R1.

I was using WS 2k3 Standard, not Enterprise though.  The normal Standard SP2 easily had the integrated services install and works great.

 Jose,

are you using RDP to connect to your Hyper-V host? If so; the mouse cannot be used through RDP before the Integration Services are installed. When you connect directly on the console (not via mstsc /console), the mouse should work.

And about your error on W2k3 SP2: what is the exact error message you receive when installing integration services?

Hi,

From the log, I find that the connection you are trying to create is between the laptop and the CBC hotspot. Some special requirements are needed, such as password, or wireless channel, etc. I suggest that you contact CBC service to confirm whether we need to adjust connection settings or if we need new passwords.

If we have confirmed with CBC that the settings are all proper, please try to reinstall the network adapter driver. I suggest that you download the latest driver from another recourse. For example, if the current driver is from the manufacturer of the laptop, please find the driver from Intel website. Oppositely, if this driver is from Intel, please try to find the latest driver on the websites of the laptop manufacturer.

If the issue still occurs, I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall, and try to connect again.

If the issue is not resolved with the above suggestions, enable wireless component tracing in Windows Vista.

To capture tracing logs on Windows Vista clients use the following steps:

Run the following commands from an elevated CMD prompt (Run as administrator).

a) netsh ras set tracing * enable
b) netsh wlan set tracing mode=yes
c) - Run the connection attempt and wait for it to fail -
d) netsh wlan set tracing mode=no (IMPORTANT: Wait for the command to return back
to the command line. This may take several seconds.)
e) netsh ras set tracing * disable

The logs generated will be located in the %SystemRoot%\tracing directory.

Hope it helps.

It came it went we kicked it's A**

I was infected by that nasty Antivirus XP, spyware, scamware infection just over 36 hours ago and now fingers crossed I'm cured.

When it came u on my screen I obeyed all the golden rules alt + ctrl and del stop process, ran my already installed spyware and virus software and to no success. I went into the msconfig and also the registry to hunt this S.O.B down and it couldn't be found, things got tough and very stressfully by this point.

Options on my control panel were disappearing, e.g. screen saver and appearance options were gone hence the blue screen, it was all getting very stressful. I spoke to my friend who is an I.T expert and he told not to get into the registry or the startup menu because that can escalate the problem or make new ones. His ADVICE WAS CLEAR AND SIMPLE GO ONTO A SEPARATE UNINFECTED PC, DOWNLOAD A SOFTWARE CALLED MALWAREBYTE ANTI MALWARE, STORE IT ON A USB KEY AND RUN IT ON YOUR COMPUTER. I done this and within an hour the problem was solved no need for start up menu's or anything just run this software. I hope my post can be helpful to someone that has been infected with this malicious piece of scumware.

Can't get on internet to even look for solutions.  HELP!!!!!

Hi,

Generally, we can safely ignore this ISATAP adapter issue. This error message does not indicate a problem with the network adapter. Regarding the network connection issue, I would like to know whether you are using wireless or wired connection.

Meanwhile, please collect the following information for further research:

1.    Windows IP Configuration by using the command ipconfig /all.

2.    Screenshot of the device management:

1) Open device management (devmgmt.msc).
2) Expand Network adapters and capture a screenshot.

Thanks. I look forward to your reply.
