Stop Code D1 on ianvstor.sys

Stop Code D1 on ianvstor.sys

I was in the process of shutting down a session of Virtual PC 2007 when I got a stop code error. I forgot the stop code, or what system file was involved, but when I restarted the computer, I got another stop code, D1, having to do with ianvstor.sys; the Intel Turbo Memory driver.

The only way to prevent this crash is to remove the Turbo Memory card, or to disable it in the BIOS. Otherwise, the system will crash on every startup, including those into Safe Mode. If the Turbo Memory driver is not installed, then the system will crash as soon as the driver is installed during the setup program.

I suspect that maybe the Turbo Memory card may have gone bad, since the crash occurs under two separate installations of Windows Vista; the 64-bit Business version I normally use, and a relatively untouched installation of 32-bit Home Basic. I have tried moving the Turbo Memory card to a different PCIe Mini Card slot, but the problem still occurs. I might see about getting a new card and testing it out. If I do, I'll report back.

If anyone else has had a problem like this (I've seen another post here describing what seems to be the same crash), of if somebody has some insight into why this might have started, please reply!

BestBuy

I was at BestBuy the other day and there was some "Microsoft donkey" standing out front by the entrance giving out free fingerprint readers and coupons for Microsoft Office.  I told him he was pimping out garbage because it didn't work with Vista64 and he seemed totally clueless that there was even a problem with them.  This fits perfectly in line with the whole entire company's stance on the topic!  You know, I don't think Microsoft has any clue that their reader doesn't work. It's very common for THOUSANDS of people to beg on their hands a knees for "ANY" reaction from Microsoft only to get zero response.

I'm pretty conservative and was generally outraged when the government split AT&T into the baby bell's in the mid 80's… however, I'm in complete support of the government splitting up and basically ruining Microsoft … my thought is that one of the baby Microsofts will actually get off their ignorant butt's and develop the software for this.

Freaken retards.

windows explorer loop(possible solution)

Have you recently saved a movie file to your pc/laptop?

When you open the folder that contains that movie a message saying windows explorer has encountered a problem...

Well if so your solution is to download a codec for that movie. Basically windows plays the first few seconds of the movie internally to find a suitable picture to display for the file. and if your computer doesn't have the codec for that movie it will cause the error to come up. another solution is to view your folders in list/details mode.

any questions feel free to ask., most of your problems with computers deals alot with trial and error. so if you try one thing and it doesn't work, move on to the next thing. ask yourself what have i done in the past 24 hours to cause this to happen. my computer for example didn't show the message until i converted a movie. so my first step was to investigate that source. i found out that once i clicked on the folder that contained it, the message would appear. i then deleted the movie and it didn't come up again. i wanted the movie, so i got it back and then simply downloaded another codec for it and never had the problem again.

another tip: never download movies directly to the desktop! always put them in some kind of folder!

Constantly having to reset router to access internet

I have 3 wired PC's.  1 XP and 2 Vistas SP2.  I use a Linksys wrtp54g, firmware 5.01.04.

I don't have any internet connection issues with my XP box.  My 2 vistas are a different story.

1 vista, everytime I wake it up, I have to reset the the network adaptor, and works fine.

2nd vista, i always have to reset my router to get it to connect to the internet (only connects to local internet).  I called gateway and we uninstalled and reinstalled the network adaptor, no help.  they told me to contact my ISP, I don't think it's their problem, gotta be in vista.

Any ideas?4G

Should points be assigned for responding to General Discussions

I'm beginning to question if points should be given to those who respond to General Discussions, because there really is no "answer" to one. People responding are just sharing their views.

Thoughts?

I would agree with you if it were not for the fact that the vast majority of General Discussion posts are due to user error.

We have discussed this issue before. IMHO it should not be so easy for a novice user to mistakenly select General Discussion. See the thread

David, can you explain what leads you to this conclusion? I know the old forums 2.x ui enabled users to be given a thread type default, and the problem there was that users were continually not bothering to change it, flooding the system with the default, which was question.

Brent:

When you select "New" from the toolbar, you get a dropdown that gives you the alternative of "Ask a question" or "General discussion". Many novice users have no idea what these mean, and often pick "General discussion" in error. If you were an Answerer rather than a Developer, you would see this happening over and over.

Since "Ask a question" is the correct choice for most people, and almost invariably the correct choice for a novice, the interface should not be this way. I would suggest that by default you should get "Ask a question" and "General discussion" should be an advanced feature that could be selected on the right side where you can select other options for the new thread.

I never really used the old forums, but I would say that your description suggests to me that the old way was better. What do you mean by "flooding the system with the default, which was question"? Since this is almost always the right choice, what was the problem?

I have made this suggestion before ...

David Wilkinson | Visual C++ MVP

The other thing is that last time I looked you couldn't mark an answer in a General Discussion thread as an Answer.

This means that you could never "close" a Gneral Discussions thread by making people aware through the green tick icon that it included an answer.

As the "Mark as Answer" function is there in the UI for a reason, surely you want it to be used. So long as using it is only possible in threads of a Question type, everytime people select General Discussion it won't be used.

The other point is having a Question type does not prohibit various people coming in with their comments - i.e. a general discussion. In fact that's the usual situation.

In my opinion the General Discussion button should only be used for things like announcements (such as Sticky announcements you want to be at the top of the threads rather than being massively highlighted above the threads) and leave *all* the rests of the threads as Questions.

If you don't like the terms used in the present UI change them !!

Dual Core CPU & ATI Video results in error 49 - No glass!Read please all - statement!

Ok guys, this issue I believe has been a long standing one and I yet to this day have seen any proper responce not from ATI or from MS or from AMD.

I believe that almost everybody with dual core AMD processors and ATI cards have encountered this issue where in order to get the glass interface and ATI driver to work in vista you have to switch to single core only.

Now,what I am asking here is not for a workarounds, since we all know it by now but for official acknowledgement and timeline for the fix from one of these vendors.
I do like the Aero and vista and would love to keep using it but I do not see the reason to sacrifice one of my cores to it,especcially when this technology is not that new and has been working rather well with XP.

In case we do not see such acknowledgement,I believe the best way would we start applying consumer pressure on these vendors to fix this problem, especcially now when vista finally goes to production.

Personally I do not understand how such a bug could be ignored in this time when  large amount of people use dual-screen cards and dual-core cpus due to the multimedia features and living room (multimedia e.t.c...) options.

Please bump if you agree!
THanks

VISTA = ACPI x86 - Based PC

Anyone any closer to a result?

MDT2K8 x64 edit Unattend.xml issue for custom VistaSP1x32 OS fix

Ok,

Not sure how many of you in the community are experiencing this issue, but after extensive debugging, I figured out how to create and deploy custom 32bit VistaSP1 images from a 64bit Win2k8 server using MDT2k8 x64.

The issue being, you cannot either create or edit the unattend.xml.

When you use imagex to capture your custom .wim, pay close attention to what you name your image and what description you use.  These two pieces of information are critical.

example:  imagex /compress fast /flags "Business" /verify /capture c: z:\test01.wim "test01"

You would write down wim name: test01 and description: test01

Capture your image to the "captures" folder of your deployment server (or where ever you chose to store them).

Go through the normal steps to create the custom OS and task sequence.

Exit MDT and navigate to Distribution$\Operating Systems\"Your orginal Vista SP1 DVD OS"

Not sure why it doesn't show up, but in the upper right corner of the explorer, search for "*.clg"

You will come across, in my case "Install_Windows Vista BUSINESS.clg",  "something_something.clg"

Copy that file and place it in: Distribution$\Operating Systems\your_custom_image_name

Here is where you will need the captured image information.

Rename that newly pasted .clg  to "WimName_Description.clg"

Example:  using imagex i captured a custom image called:  testimage01.wim "testimage01"

The new .clg file must be renamed to:  testimage01_testimage01.clg

Whallah!  Your new custom 32bit VistaSP1 image will now function properly on your 64bit MDT2K8 server and you can edit the unattend.xml all day long.

*You may need to bounce your server to get it to work with the new .clg

Hope this helps!

Why the Font/Size isn't working

Usually, the font size thing doesn't appear.

I just happened to start using it while the lower frame was as close to the top as possible, and finally it appeared! What happens is the font thing seems to be separate from the actual field.

It's really messy, I think, that they don't work in sync.

The worst manifestation of this bug appears only on Mozilla browsers. The main window must be scrolled to the top in order for the font menu to appear in the right place (or at all). For a forum that claims to support FireFox, this is a pretty major bug, IMHO (and one that was noted long ago).

On IE the menu initially appears in the right place, but scrolls with the main window.

Actually, the number of bugs and usability issues in the composition window is quite large. A complete rewrite would be in order, IMHO.

Here's how I fixed the boot loop SP3 error

Here is how I fixed the SP3 boot error.  I was able to boot up in safe mode so one in safe mode I went into add/remove programs and removed SP3.  I then popped my CD in and did a system restore.  An hour and a half later I was able to boot normally however, my internet explorer was messed up.  So I had to uninstall IE, reinstall, and then upgrade to IE7 for it to work properly.  Finally, I had to reinstall my video and sound card drivers and I think my system is back to normal.

On a personal note:  I've never considered switching over to a Mac until this.  A few months ago I built a system for my sister and niece and they wanted Vista for their operating system and so I put it on their computer.  Unfortunately they have had a lot of buggy compatibility issues with it that I have had to fix for them.  Then with the issue with SP3 I'm losing hope in Microsoft.  I don't really want to switch operating systems however from what I've seen with Macintosh I could consider a move.

Hope this helps someone.

Explorer 7 on and off my PC again in 3 hrs - comments

I am posting this here, because I cannot find any IE7 WIn XP place to post it or a way to send comments to support. If there are answers to my questions I will be please to get them - otherwise these are comments for IE7 team.

The good news - I had no problem installing and uninstalling it. It ran fine for me for the things I tried. But......

The bad news - my wife did not like it

She does not like to learn new programs, and was comfortble with IE6. In IE7 she could not find what she had before - toolbars different etc. I had to show the menutoolbar, and make it as similar to IE6 as possible.

- having an extra step to get to history was not liked (it is located with favorites)

- the favorites button did not show a legend with cursor over it

- she did not appreciate the additional links that she did not have before (more stuff to delete and clean up)

THE KILLER - wifes work webmail did not work.

IE7 had an error and closed on clicking the "send" for the mail. VERY frustrating after composing the message and there was no way to save it at that point. I tried various things, including messing with security settings, but could not fix it. THe error was reported through normal windows error reporting channels.

- another glitch - while looking for support, I pulled down the IE7 HELP and clicked support - I got a tab ipened  to the RCN home page www.rcn.com What was that about?

- at the right hand side of the tools ther is a meny that drops down and has links to Dell and a PC diagnostic co, and other stuff - what is that about? can I remove them?

Try running System Restore in Safe Mode, its possible that your Antivirus program (Symantec/Norton?) is conflicting with it.

Look below the "edited reason" line at this thread : http://forums.expression.microsoft.com/en-US/web/thread/dd91eed7-83f6-4646-98e7-6b49af2253ae

What caused that was I copied and pasted some text/links from Google directly onto the thread.

This is not about having a default full Administrator account that saves you a few seconds when you use UAC to elevate a process that needs administrator privileges, it's about 'responsibility'.

With a broadband connection and an unsecure computer, 'anyone' can have their computer turned into a zombie that will broadcast an infection to thousands of other computers that are also owned by users who have turned off all of the security options on their computers just to make it a little more convenient.

Windows Vista comes with a new Windows Firewall, a two-way firewall that is automatically turned on, by default.

Security: TechNet Magazine Articles:

You cannot just dismiss all of the new security features in Vista by simply saying that something is inconvenient.

I mean when you use vista or vista sp1 you steel get prompts more then windows server 2008 so thats to me is a problem and what with rams you need 2 to 3GB to use vista WHAT THE *** and what is with vista or vista sp1 performance i mean 2 to 3GB man that to me sucks i think they need to go with 64-bit only with the newer OS from now on. I no about the 4GBs we need to have with 64-bit so don't tail me about that

Hi

You seem to want to change the subject every time you reply?

You started with the behavior of the user accounts in Server 2008 as compared to Vista.

I replied and tried to give you information on why this was done.

Your next message was about the Windows Firewall.

I replied and gave you information about the firewall.

And now your next reply is about the future of Windows?

You need to find yourself a good general chat group that discusses Windows.

Have fun.

Hi

I do not work for Microsoft. I am just another user, like yourself.

I volunteer some of my time to help other users of Microsoft products. The Microsoft MVP designation below my name means that I have received an award from Microsoft for consistently helping other users over a period of time.

As another Microsoft customer, your voice carries as much weight as mine does.

You can let Microsoft know about your likes or dislikes and even recommend changes to Windows at the following feedback website.
