Windows 7 sound scheme saving bug??
When I create a custom theme in Windows 7 and go into the sound scheme properties I deselect certain sound not to be played: like startnavigation.wav. Then I save this modified sound scheme in the menu. This sound scheme will then be used with the complete custom theme. After that I saved the theme to be sure it remembers all my customizations.
But when I switch to another theme and go back to my customized theme, windows enabled some of the sounds I deselected again altough I choosed them not to be played. My theme info window still says it uses a modified sound theme but it reenabled some of the sounds during switch. Is this a bug??

Christian

I also did an upgrade install and was having a problem with Norton Internet Security 2009 (not the suite) not loading advanced protection. I downloaded the Norton uninstaller from their web site and uninstalled the program. The uninstaller says it must be ran twice to completely remove the program so I did that. I reinstalled the software and it has worked perfect since.

toolbar computer/workstation
Under XP it was possible, to make a toolbar with the work station, and then it was in the taskbar, and if the taskbar was unlocked, i could pull it from the taskbar to the desktop, and then there was a "window" with my work station, and if i pull it to the left, I got a new "taskbar" with my work station, so my hard drives, CD/DVD...
On Win7, I can create the toolbar, but I can't pull it from the taskbar to the desktop, the taskbar doesn't let the toolbar go... Has anybody the same problem and can halp me, because it is easier to manage it with harddrives, if they are on the left side of the desktop, than always in the workstation...

Lots of Blue Screens
BUT.....everything loads up fine. But during the day, I will have for no apparent reason, it just go black, then into a blue screen. Messages are there, but not long enough to read what is causing it. Does not seem to be related to anything I'm doing. Completely random at this point.
Very frustrating because when it is working, I love what I see so far. But the Blue Screens I'm afraid will cause me to bail out of the BETA TEST until and if I can come across what is causing them.
I realize there are thousands of combinations of computers, software, hardware, on and on and on and to narrow it down this soon into the beta release may be a bit much to ask for.
And lastly, the shut down part has never worked. No matter what option I choose, shutdown, or restart...it blue screens. It does not shut down in a managed way.
SO...for now. I'm going to reformat and try again. Just thought I would throw out there what I've experienced so far.

Yes, I have done all the UPDATES that I know to do.
Yes, I think it's a bug, especially on the initial install. You're kinda left out in the dark with that error popping up like that, with no alternatives listed.
After several attempts, and choosing the SAFE BOOT option, then finally noticing (my bad), the option to try and lower resolution...did I finally get it to install. I'm wondering if through all that, something didn't get corrupted in the install. Anyway, like I mentioned, I'm not that far along into it, that I can't start over which is what I think I will do. If the same blue screens continue after that, then maybe that will tell them something.
I do send feedback every chance I get. I have no idea who and if anyone is getting or reading them, but I do send them, in the hopes that it will help in resolving these issues for the future.
Thank you for your quick reply. I will try the reinstall and post here, but I find out.

2008 Server Problems
After a couple of days 2 things that are glaringingly obvious to me is
1) Still no way of adding a default printer through a GPO with the Print Services
2) There is problem running FSRM on a domain controller, once you have a file screen (for audio and video only!) you can no longer edit any GPO objects, why? I know I am not the only one to find this out found a few google threads on it.
So far its not been good testing.
IEAK 7 plus security updates
I used IEAK 7 to create a packaged IE 7 installation for a company. Everything worked out perfectly. The only problem is now they have released security updates for IE 7. I only need to install two of them. The latest cumulative update, and the one following that. The reason I'm posting is because I would like to know if you could integrate security updates into IEAK 7. This would make packaging this app up a lot easier, since two reboots are required if you want to install IE 7 and the security updates at the same time.
Thanks for the answer in advance.

Confirmed Installation on Vmware Workstation 6.5
Installation went flawlessly.
Vmware detected the installation media as "Windows Vista" and used the "Easy Install" functionality.
It booted the os, installed it, and installed vmware tools automatically.
Vmware network and display drivers are functioning normally.
Performance is decent with 1gig of ram.
Still can't download key from technet.

Only problem I am having is a limitation in VMWare graphics which will not allow the LCD wide-screen resolution in the 1680 range (have to use 1280). This causes the Win7 startup graphics to be skewed somewhat up to the point where the login screen dialog is presented (which is okay). From that point on, graphics are great.
I experienced BSOD one time so far and I was amazed at the built-in healing remedies provided by Win7. The remedy afforded by Win7 healed the problem and upon next boot worked okay again.
I am excited about this OS and it looks and feels great. Very intuitive and helpful which many users will enjoy. I skipped Vista OS installations due to many problems experienced by others but this OS will get installed on all my machines once it is past Beta.
I also loaded the free AVG (http://free.avg.com) and it is also working flawlessly inside the VM Win7.
I have also played movies, music, and downloaded files from the Internet with no problems.
The widgets provided by the Beta work flawlessly and the one widget that lets you monitor CPU processing and memory is very nice. I can tell by this widget when Win7 is demanding more processing than normal and I can then call up Task Manager to see what is causing it.
I hope this helps those testers who are thinking about installing Win7 in a virtual environment and I will be interested in replies.

nVidia Mobile Graphics Drivers?
Is there anybody with a running Win7 64 Version of nVidias official Mobile drivers?
Trying different officially not supported drivers (laptopvideo2go, Vista64, modded INF) did not help.
This happens each time, I use a different driver than the standart driver, which does not recognize my card correctly:
The First Bootscreen apprears ("Starting WIndows"), than, instead of the Login-Screen, the Laptop reboots, without Bluescreen or anything, just like a power disruption. Safe Mode is no problem.
I would appreciate your quick help!

nVidia Geforce 9600M GT 512MB DDR3 VRAM
Vista Home Premium (x86), Windows 7 Beta (x64)

Boot Screen Changer please :(
Many programs already exist that change the windows boot screen but it would be a lot better if this was built into windows. It's a simple feature that shouldn't require that much of expertise in the making. There won't be an antitrust suit so don't worry about that. Just make us happy and give us the Option and the idea of "Choice" that you have been promising us.
Here is how it should work:
In the Personalize menu you should add a new feature called Boot screen:
Mockup
Instead of Adjust there should be Change I think
After clicking it there should be a window similar to the screen saver settings window:
Mockup
-Settings button gives me the settings to change the sound or mute it (anything that has to do with the Bootscreen's setting)
-Browse gives me the ability to get other themes from the explorer. This makes it possible to download from the internet other boot screens.
-When one clicks on Windows Logo there should be multiple available boot screens already installed with windows and there should be something with "More Themes Online" Which directs me to Microsoft's website of Boot screens.
Please add this feature to your next release of Windows (Windows 7)
Actually I think that you already have this feature hidden waiting for the full release of Windows 7, cause I read on a blog that some Windows 7 features are available but hidden waiting for the full release.
Anyway give us at least a hint that you'r working on it or something
Thanks a lot

-Changing the logo of Microsoft, of your choosing of course, to another one like the vista logo
-changing the background of the boot screen from dead black to a picture of the sea or anything.
Why can't there be a choice?

Your suggestion is perfect for a Gadget. There is an interface available to developers that make such a thing possible. However, I don't think you are going to convince Microsoft to remove their own logo.

you may try this for solving the problem if it really exsist make one more user account and also enables guest login for a while and then restart your system and then see whether those secrect coded accounts are there or not......

Library - Pictures - Sort by Tag - display error
testing windows 7. it is great. I like the library feature very much. But by playing around with a picture library I think there is an error. Every time I try to sort by Tag. Windows7 displays all contents without stapling the results by tag. After I use the menu and click staple by Tag. Then it staples. all other views (Date Month folder) staple correctly. Why not by tag?

Successfully Installed on ASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard.
Just a quick overview for now on our successes together.
1) Downloaded Windows 7 Beta 32bit, burned it to a DVD with older Nero software.
2) Installed Windows 7 Beta onto an Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard, EVGA's Nvidia 7600GT video card, 2 sata HDS (75gb each), 2 GB memory pc800.
3) HD one had Windows XP pro so I installed the Windows Beta on drive D: as a "dual-boot".
4). Installation was fast and smooth, Windows 7 recognized and installed drivers for everything on the motherboard, keyboard, mouse, Cannon printer too.
5). Used the install DVD and "wiped both hard drives clean" and installed Windows 7 Beta as primary C: This too was a smooth and easy install that only took about 20-30 minutes.
6) I have never used Windows Vista, have never been a "Beta tester", I can say this; " I am quite impressed with the seamless installs and initial operations" I look forward to this new adventure.

Creating SoftGrid/App-V packages without Sequencer
Don't know if this is suitable forum for this, but as it relates to Sequencing very much, here it goes:
I have released a new tool for App-V, a industry first if you will, that allows you to create new App-V package from the scratch by encoding a directory structure. It's called SFT Encoder Express Edition, and can be found from my usual site of tools at: http://www.virtualapp.net/sft-encoder.html
As name suggests, there's also more advanced commercial versions available that allow modification of existing packages etc. that I believe any SG/App-V admin or packager can benefit from.
Have fun with it!

I guess what he means is the fact that over at 'Customize notification icons' it shows every item which has ever appeared in the System Tray. For instance I have at least a dozen entries just for Everest Ultimate (sensor icons) and I have no idea how to remove them (yet).
http://elitepicturehost.com/up_imgs/img_75ce4d2cd6fa20a052d9e7f2edcba54f.jpg
The same problem existed in earlier versions of Windows, but I had CCleaner to get rid of the redundant entries. Unfortunately this particular functionality of CCleaner doesn't work yet in Windows 7.

Obviously the programs have to adapt as well, but right now the biggest problem lies in the behaviour of 'Customize notification icons'. Is there perhaps a way to edit those entries in the registry?

Win 7 Beta - A bit disappointed

As a late entry Beta tester, I am a bit disappointed. I was hoping to challenge my computer savy by discovering bugs and issues, but to my dismay, those that were here before me, did a pretty good job. I am finding this version to be the best windows yet. Except for the fact that if your PC doesn't support Aero, your experience is somewhat limited and confusing, this has been an overall Boring Beta. (which is a tribute and good thing to those at MS)
keep on dreaming!!! LOL
there are a lot of bugs to discover! I have seen quite a few from things not working to simply minimize notepad++ and half of the screen stays black! I have sent quite a few too.... and hope to send more!
Aero has many bugs too, but I don't have Aero on Toshiba. Too old for that!

3.1, 95, CE, 98, 98SE, 2000, Server 2003, Server 2008, ME, XP, Vista that I know of. Shouldn't it be called 12?
Actually, no.
While I'm not sure where Windows Server products fall in the production lineup or Windows CE, the actual version count IS 7. Starting from Windows 3.1: Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, and ME all count as iterations of Windows 4 (I'm not an MS employee, but if I had to give numbers, I'd say 4.0, 4.5, 4.6, and 4.9 respectively). Windows 2000 marks Windows 5.0 as the next major departure from previous functionality (2000 being 5.0, with XP being 5.1 or so, I seem to recall that version number ACTUALLY existing in XP somewhere). While Windows NT was using it's own version numbers before 2000, they do matchup with the Consumer Windows lineup in that way (with NT 4.0 being roughly equivalent to Windows 95/98, and Windows 2000 being NT 5.0). Vista would then be Windows 6 as it is again the next major change in the software, especially given the amount of time before it hit the market.
You can also think of it in terms of hardware requirements. Every COMPLETELY new version of Windows calls for a rather large increase in requirements over the previous full version. The requirements from 95->98->ME were not MAJOR, but the jump from those to Windows 2000/XP are pretty drastic. Similarly, the jump from 2000/XP to Vista is also a fairly large one, and requires a pretty beefy machine compared to the last major release.
Also, finally, look at the drivers setup choices for many hardware componenents. Windows 9x products are often linked together, with drivers for 95 being compatible with 98 (though not always backwards compatible, necessarily). Similarly, Windows 2000 and XP are often the same. Vista generally seems to be the next standalone driver type.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, that's just how I've seen it.
