Windows 7 sound scheme saving bug??

Windows 7 sound scheme saving bug??

Windows 7 sound scheme saving bug??

When I create a custom theme in Windows 7 and go into the sound scheme properties I deselect certain sound not to be played: like startnavigation.wav. Then I save this modified sound scheme in the menu. This sound scheme will then be used with the complete custom theme. After that I saved the theme to be sure it remembers all my customizations.
But when I switch to another theme and go back to my customized theme, windows enabled some of the sounds I deselected again altough I choosed them not to be played. My theme info window still says it uses a modified sound theme but it reenabled some of the sounds during switch. Is this a bug??

Christian

Reply:
Yes, it is. My system saves my sounds in a custom setup. Send what feedback you can, and look into availability of a new sound driver.

Hmm well it remembers the option 'no sound' in a custom theme. When I switch themes in 'my themes' it still rememberd the 'no sound' scheme. The problem arises when disabling individual sounds. A sound like 'Start navigation' always gets enabled again after a theme switch in 'my themes' altough I saved it to be disabled in that specific theme.
Im using onboard soundmax drivers on an asus p6tdeluxe motherboard.

My cure for windows explorer crashing

My cure for windows explorer crashing when trying to update windows, was, to uninstall Norton 360. I did an upgrade install and was originally having proiblems with internet security suite 2009. Something about advanced protection not loading. I am going to try an earilier version of 360 since this was a beta version (3.0).

i haven't used any norton s/w since the DOS days.  everything is bloated and unstable.  norton seems to think your system exists to run its utilities.

dgaunt33,

I also did an upgrade install and was having a problem with Norton Internet Security 2009 (not the suite) not loading advanced protection.  I downloaded the Norton uninstaller from their web site and uninstalled the program.  The uninstaller says it must be ran twice to completely remove the program so I did that.  I reinstalled the software and it has worked perfect since.

Interface Not Supported !

I have been trying to get this program to work called Fpath Community Chat for 2 years.. it is a server and client side chat system ,the chat rooms have audio and video xp and direct x based. to be able to run the client side to get into chat lobby you must right click on the icon and run in compatibility xp then it will let you in the lobby to chat. but if you click on a room where the audio and video are you get

"Interface not supported"

This happened with vista as well. at one time  vista ran an update and it fixed and now we are back to square one I was hoping that windows seven had fixed this issue.. anyone have any Ideas??? Remeber the system was based on XP .

you can here http://www.avpod.net/  download avpod it is the same system same error.
If any of you have advise  please leave a post this is a major bug.

toolbar computer/workstation

Can anybody help me please..
Under XP it was possible, to make a toolbar with the work station, and then it was in the taskbar, and if the taskbar was unlocked, i could pull it from the taskbar to the desktop, and then there was a "window" with my work station, and if i pull it to the left, I got a new "taskbar" with my work station, so my hard drives, CD/DVD...

On Win7, I can create the toolbar, but I can't pull it from the taskbar to the desktop, the taskbar doesn't let the toolbar go... Has anybody the same problem and can halp me, because it is easier to manage it with harddrives, if they are on the left side of the desktop, than always in the workstation...

Reply:
The new way to have desktop items in Win7 is to create a Gadget to do what you want. You might search around for a toolbar gadget.

Lots of Blue Screens

Downloaded and installed Windows 7. Been running Vista Home Premium with no problems. However, during the install (Dell Optiplex GX620)....almost complete and got a "input not approved" error floating on the screen. Nothing else. I rebooted choosing F8, and finally used the lower resolution option and it finished installing. NOW...I'm not sure if this is the cause of the rest of the problems or not. I'm about to reformat and try again.

BUT.....everything loads up fine. But during the day, I will have for no apparent reason, it just go black, then into a blue screen. Messages are there, but not long enough to read what is causing it. Does not seem to be related to anything I'm doing. Completely random at this point.

Very frustrating because when it is working, I love what I see so far. But the Blue Screens I'm afraid will cause me to bail out of the BETA TEST until and if I can come across what is causing them.

I realize there are thousands of combinations of computers, software, hardware, on and on and on and to narrow it down this soon into the beta release may be a bit much to ask for.

And lastly, the shut down part has never worked. No matter what option I choose, shutdown, or restart...it blue screens. It does not shut down in a managed way.

SO...for now. I'm going to reformat and try again. Just thought I would throw out there what I've experienced so far.

After the install, did you run Microsoft Updates to look for a video card update? Plus if you think this is a bug please send it to the dev teams using the "send feedback" link next to the minimize button. : )

------------------------------------
Reply:

Yes, I have done all the UPDATES that I know to do.

Yes, I think it's a bug, especially on the initial install. You're kinda left out in the dark with that error popping up like that, with no alternatives listed.

After several attempts, and choosing the SAFE BOOT option, then finally noticing (my bad), the option to try and lower resolution...did I finally get it to install. I'm wondering if through all that, something didn't get corrupted in the install. Anyway, like I mentioned, I'm not that far along into it, that I can't start over which is what I think I will do. If the same blue screens continue after that, then maybe that will tell them something.

I do send feedback every chance I get. I have no idea who and if anyone is getting or reading them, but I do send them, in the hopes that it will help in resolving these issues for the future.

Thank you for your quick reply. I will try the reinstall and post here, but I find out.

Try to do a memory test to ensure that your BSODs are not being caused by a bad module.  Click the Start orb and at the search box type "mem."  Run the memory diag tool as see what it reports.

Good luck with the reformat. As for the memory testing I would recommend that you download memtest86 (easily found on the net) That program picked up an error with one of my ram modules that the Windows memory checker never caught (I was having random BSODs at the time) This was under Vista x64 SP1, I don't know if the memory checker has been updated with W7 but at least it gives you another option.

Yeah, there is a strange refresh rate issue that occurs during install I would say 1 out of every 5 attempts on both of my test PCs. I've never attempted to go into low-res mode to fix this, and frankly, I think it's safe to assume that since the refresh rate was wrong during your install, something else might be as well. I also think it is safe to assume that you should reformat and reinstall.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Hey everyone. Well, I did do a complete reformat, and resintall, with exactly the same problem. I'm assuming the install was either finished or very near finished when I got the "Input Not Supported" error. I left it along for several minutes, seeing if it would produce any other errors, or reboot, but it did not. So, I power the machine off, then turned it back on and pressed the F8 key, to boot into SAFE MODE, and took the low resolution option to continue the boot. It did then come back up and finished installing. I changed the screen resolution, and everything seems to be working again. I have noticed far fews blue screens at this point. I am using a DELL Optiplex GX620 computer w/2GB's of MEMORY, and an ACER V193 19" flat screen monitor. Not sure what's up with that, but it certainly should be something for Microsoft to look at before releasing (yes, feedback has been left).

try going to support.dell.com and download the latest video drivers from there.  Either 32 or 64 bit depending on the Beta you installed

------------------------------------
Reply:
Okay, this is obviously the culprit. The video card is an integrated Intel (R) 82945G Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation WDDM1.0). DELL does not have even a VISTA driver for it, even though I've been running Vista Home Premium with no problems. Intel's web-site, although lists drivers, but when I go to install, it comes up with OS not supported error. SO, I presume this is the root of my problem. However, even though I suppose all indications, are that this machine with it's components, are not going to work with anything other than XP for sure....I would still like to see some sort of warning come up immediately during the installation (of Windows-7, or even Vista for that matter), or some other way to exit the installation, other than the "floating" "INPUT NOT SUPPORTED" message. Just my opinion.

So last night, I had the problem where Windows Update would cause an error that would say something about explorer crashing.  To solve this, I made sure I had no programs running and then deleted all the files out of my temporary directory that I could (some are not deletable).  After I did that, Windows Update ran just fine.

You can get to your temporary directory (it is hidden) quickly by hitting Win+R, then typing %TEMP% and hitting return.  Yes, that is TEMP surrounded by percent signs.

windows 7 wont format ide drives & lack of video drivers

I have had some success using sata drives and installing windows 7, running smooth on those systems, trying to install and format on legacy systems with ide drives is difficult if not null process, the os has no problem detecting and seeing the drives and partitions, will delete those partitions but is unable to format known good and working drives, it errors and says it is unable to format, this is on basic intel chipset's used on many systems such as dell, compaq, hp, gateway, etc.. I have had to go back to a xp disc to format a drive then once it is formated windows 7 will install fine, the only other issue I have ran into is a lack of video drivers for ati or intel, it will default to 800X600 generic but that is not much to test other features. I would like to be able to run the os more but need more video drivers

I'm using a Dell GX270 with integrated Intel video and Win7 installed and works fine but only with the generic vga driver at 640x480.  I try to install the Dell XP driver but after the install and reboot, it reinstalls the generic vga driver.

Unable to utilize some drives with Vista tv recordings in Win7

I am running Win7 in a dual boot with Vista Ultimate.  The Vista Ultimate system has 7 hard drives with 5 partititions containing Vista Recorded TV.  In Win7 I was able to designate 3 of those partitions as default recorder storage in Win7 thus making the recordings visible and available for viewing/storage.  All 5 of the drives(partitions) show up in Media Center recorder settings but when I try to designate those 2 as Recorder Storage Win7 says it will have to immediately delete some or all recordings to make room.  In addition,  if I try to increase the "available recording space"  from the default amount the bar graph at the bottom increases the space used by recorded tv instead of "available space" and this results in the same message when trying to designate the drive as default "Recorder Storage":  ".....delete some or all recordings to make room:. Both drives have over 100 GBs available.  I am curious if anyone else with multiple recorded tv drives has run into this problem or can duplicate it on their pc?  I plan on installing Win 7 on 3 of my Vista PCs when it comes out but don't want to lose a lot of recorded analog tv shows that I watch on my analog TVs through Xbox 360 extenders.   I have sent this in to Microsoft thru the "Send Feedback" but I'm sure they won't respond to each person's feedback lol!

2008 Server Problems

I am just doing my upgrade exams, and have installed 2 x 2008 Standard Servers for testing.

After a couple of days 2 things that are glaringingly obvious to me is

1) Still no way of adding a default printer through a GPO with the Print Services
2) There is problem running FSRM on a domain controller, once you have a file screen (for audio and video only!) you can no longer edit any GPO objects, why? I know I am not the only one to find this out found a few google threads on it.

So far its not been good testing.

IEAK 7 plus security updates

Hi All,

I used IEAK 7 to create a packaged IE 7 installation for a company. Everything worked out perfectly. The only problem is now they have released security updates for IE 7. I only need to install two of them. The latest cumulative update, and the one following that. The reason I'm posting is because I would like to know if you could integrate security updates into IEAK 7. This would make packaging this app up a lot easier, since two reboots are required if you want to install IE 7 and the security updates at the same time.

Thanks for the answer in advance.

Confirmed Installation on Vmware Workstation 6.5

I can confirm that Windows 7 works with Vmware Workstation 6.5.

Installation went flawlessly.

Vmware detected the installation media as "Windows Vista" and used the "Easy Install" functionality.

It booted the os, installed it, and installed vmware tools automatically.

Vmware network and display drivers are functioning normally.

Performance is decent with 1gig of ram.

Still can't download key from technet.

I installed Win7 Beta in VMWare Workstation 6.5 with no problems.  Find myself using the virtual Win7 more than the host OS (winXP-SP3).  I have 3GB RAM on the host and WIn7 works great in the 1GB I allocated to the VM.  It is also working in a 16GB virtual HD.

Only problem I am having is a limitation in VMWare graphics which will not allow the LCD wide-screen resolution in the 1680 range (have to use 1280).  This causes the Win7 startup graphics to be skewed somewhat up to the point where the login screen dialog is presented (which is okay).  From that point on, graphics are great.

I experienced BSOD one time so far and I was amazed at the built-in healing remedies provided by Win7.  The remedy afforded by Win7 healed the problem and upon next boot worked okay again.

I am excited about this OS and it looks and feels great.  Very intuitive and helpful which many users will enjoy.  I skipped Vista OS installations due to many problems experienced by others but this OS will get installed on all my machines once it is past Beta.

I also loaded the free AVG (http://free.avg.com) and it is also working flawlessly inside the VM Win7.

I have also played movies, music, and downloaded files from the Internet with no problems.

The widgets provided by the Beta work flawlessly and the one widget that lets you monitor CPU processing and memory is very nice.  I can tell by this widget when Win7 is demanding more processing than normal and I can then call up Task Manager to see what is causing it.

I hope this helps those testers who are thinking about installing Win7 in a virtual environment and I will be interested in replies.

Reply:
David, two things come to mind regarding the 'crash' of your system after installing VM TOOLS:  low memory, or, device driver incompatibility.  In my VM running WIN7, I allocated 1GB of RAM out of my total 3GB available.  This leaves enough RAM for my PC to run other applications and processes while the VM is turned "ON".  Unless you specifically saw the "Blue Screen of Death" inside the VM when it crashed, I'll bet your PC crashed taking the VM down with it.  Also, in order to verify that your device drivers on your PC are up to date before running a VM, you may wish to join a website that will scan your PC and recommend driver updates online (I am not affiliated with them, however, one such site is "
http://www.drivershq.com
").  Of course, VMWare substitutes some device drivers on your PC for their own supplied drivers within the guest OS so it is important to make sure that your VM is also up to date.  I hope this helps.

nVidia Mobile Graphics Drivers?

Hi there!

Is there anybody with a running Win7 64 Version of nVidias official Mobile drivers?
Trying different officially not supported drivers (laptopvideo2go, Vista64, modded INF) did not help.

This happens each time, I use a different driver than the standart driver, which does not recognize my card correctly:

Boot Screen Changer please :(

Is there a possibility that you add a boot screen changer? I mean this feature was wanted since win 98 (if not since the beginning of Windows). The Idea of changing the boot screen is a dream for me and I would really appreciate it if u add it to Windows 7.
Many programs already exist that change the windows boot screen but it would be a lot better if this was built into windows. It's a simple feature that shouldn't require that much of expertise in the making. There won't be an antitrust suit so don't worry about that. Just make us happy and give us the Option and the idea of "Choice" that you have been promising us.

Here is how it should work:

In the Personalize menu you should add a new feature called Boot screen:
Mockup
Instead of Adjust there should be Change I think

After clicking it there should be a window similar to the screen saver settings window:
Mockup
-Settings button gives me the settings to change the sound or mute it (anything that has to do with the Bootscreen's setting)
-Browse gives me the ability to get other themes from the explorer. This makes it possible to download from the internet other boot screens.
-When one clicks on Windows Logo there should be multiple available boot screens already installed with windows and there should be something with "More Themes Online" Which directs me to Microsoft's website of Boot screens.

Please add this feature to your next release of Windows (Windows 7)
Actually I think that you already have this feature hidden waiting for the full release of Windows 7, cause I read on a blog that some Windows 7 features are available but hidden waiting for the full release.

Anyway give us at least  a hint that you'r working on it or something

Thanks a lot

If the problem lies in the windows icon than just don't make a browse button and just give us the ability to choose from multiple windows or windows user created boot screen that are quality guaranteed and featured on microsoft's website. Give us the choice please! We just want to have the choice between: -displaying the progress of the boot or not through a dynamic load bar
-Changing the logo of Microsoft, of your choosing of course,  to another one like the vista logo
-changing the background of the boot screen from dead black to a picture of the sea or anything.

Why can't there be a choice?

This shouldn't be a problem if MS releases an appropriate gadget which labels any custom background and/or loading animation with a subtle MS logo watermark.

Why not by tag?

Successfully Installed on ASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard.

Hi Folks,

Just a quick overview for now on our successes together.

1) Downloaded Windows 7 Beta 32bit, burned it to a DVD with older Nero software.

2) Installed Windows 7 Beta onto an  Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard, EVGA's Nvidia 7600GT video card, 2 sata   HDS (75gb each), 2 GB memory pc800.

3) HD one had Windows XP pro so I installed the Windows Beta  on drive D: as a "dual-boot".

4). Installation was fast and smooth, Windows 7 recognized and installed drivers for everything on the motherboard, keyboard, mouse, Cannon printer too.

5). Used the install DVD and "wiped both hard drives clean" and installed Windows 7 Beta as primary C: This too was a smooth and easy install that only took about 20-30 minutes.

6) I have never used Windows Vista, have never been a "Beta tester", I can say this; " I am quite impressed with the seamless installs and initial operations"  I look forward to this new adventure.

Creating SoftGrid/App-V packages without Sequencer

Hello,

Don't know if this is suitable forum for this, but as it relates to Sequencing very much, here it goes:

I have released a new tool for App-V, a industry first if you will, that allows you to create new App-V package from the scratch by encoding a directory structure. It's called SFT Encoder Express Edition, and can be found from my usual site of tools at: http://www.virtualapp.net/sft-encoder.html

As name suggests, there's also more advanced commercial versions available that allow modification of existing packages etc. that I believe any SG/App-V admin or packager can benefit from.

Have fun with it!

I guess what he means is the fact that over at 'Customize notification icons' it shows every item which has ever appeared in the System Tray. For instance I have at least a dozen entries just for Everest Ultimate (sensor icons) and I have no idea how to remove them (yet).

The same problem existed in earlier versions of Windows, but I had CCleaner to get rid of the redundant entries. Unfortunately this particular functionality of CCleaner doesn't work yet in Windows 7.

Same here

I have the same issue as above.

Also, one particular programme (speed fan 4.37) seems to be creating a new entry each time I start it up, even when using the same shortcut to start it. So I have had to disable the notification management and allow all icons to show.

This should be fixed by RTM, surely?

More than likely it will be fixed by RTM and with updated versions of the software to be fully Windows 7 compatible.

Obviously the programs have to adapt as well, but right now the biggest problem lies in the behaviour of 'Customize notification icons'. Is there perhaps a way to edit those entries in the registry?

Win 7 Beta - A bit disappointed

As a late entry Beta tester, I am a bit disappointed.  I was hoping to challenge my computer savy by discovering bugs and issues, but to my dismay, those that were here before me, did a pretty good job.  I am finding this version to be the best windows yet.  Except for the fact that if your PC doesn't support Aero, your experience is somewhat limited and confusing, this has been an overall Boring Beta. (which is a tribute and good thing to those at MS)

keep on dreaming!!! LOL

there are a lot of bugs to discover! I have seen quite a few from things not working to simply minimize notepad++ and half of the screen stays black! I have sent quite a few too.... and hope to send more!
Aero has many bugs too, but I don't have Aero on Toshiba. Too old for that!

I'm sure that there are still many bugs to be found, that no one has seen yet!

My old dell labtop dose not support aero sadley but i been very happy with windows 7. Vista did not work but windows 7 is thank god! But right now its in beta so you might not be able to use aero for a wile but winodws 7 rocks so far!

The notepad issue that you mention might have something to do with your hardware.  I first installed the beta on a dell inspiron 6000 notebook that did not support aero.  I was confused at first by all the raving of the new taskbar because the notebook did not support aero.   I didn't though have the screen issues that you have.  My only issue was with Zone Alarm preventing internet connectivity.  I then installed the Beta on my Dell Vostro desktop as a new 64 bit install.  This did support aero and my eyes were filled with candy and great operability.  I am using this system on a daily basis using many applications from all eras of computing and have not found any major issues.

Glad your enjoy it! Do you still have it on your labtop so you can see what its like without aero!

A Rose by Any Other Name ...

I can't help feeling that, as a name,  'Windows 7' is a bit of a let-down after 'XP' and 'Vista".

How about:
Windows Seven    OR    Windows Septimus?

After Xp, (w), Vista, (u), T...

  • Windows TaskMaster,
  • Windows TaskForce
  • Windows Tango,
  • Windows Tattoo,
  • Windows TeamWork,
  • Windows Tempest,
  • Windows Tempo,
  • Windows Tequila,
  • Windows Threshold,
  • Windows Thunderbolt,
  • Windows Tiara,
  • Windows Tide,
  • Windows Tomahawk,
  • Windows Tomorrow,
  • Windows ToolMaster,
  • Windows TouchStone
  • etc:
  • etc:

Any other suggestions - there must be some very creative souls out there?

Well Seven makes sense if you think abut it, Windows 7 is the seventh version of Windows.
And I'm curious why is Xp w, and Vista u?

THanks for that.

I guess it's the romantic in me.

After Win XP and Win Vista, Win 7 seems a bit bald.

I agree - it does seem a very boring name.

Calling it Windows 7 also seems odd when you realise that the software is actually V6.1 (V6 was Vista).

No more vista, It should be called "HORIZON", "VERGE" or "CUSP"

But not, I hope, Windows Singularity OR Windows Event Horizon ...

... although could that explain where some of my files go?

Me personally, I couldn't care less what it is called just so it works. The best operating systems that Microsoft had did have numbers instead of names though. But if we must have a "romantic" name how about Corsair or Ouida? Better yet, how about no name or number, just a symbol that can't be pronounced? Nah, just keep the number.

The number is fine for me. We can go on with Windows 8, Windows 9, Windows 10....
Maybe we could also take the release year - Windows 2009, Windows 2012....
If there is a special name, microsoft had to look all over the world if the name is free. BTW here in germany 'Tempo' is a registered trademark for soft tissues.

Good point, the rest of the T words are probably in use somewhere, but its doubtful that Windows 7 is being used anywhere else. We don't need to pay a higher price for the new OS because Microsoft got sued for hundreds of millions of dollars over a copyright infringement. I think I will copyright Windows 8, Windows 9 and Windows 10 for future use.

Actually, no.

While I'm not sure where Windows Server products fall in the production lineup or Windows CE, the actual version count IS 7. Starting from Windows 3.1: Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, and ME all count as iterations of Windows 4 (I'm not an MS employee, but if I had to give numbers, I'd say 4.0, 4.5, 4.6, and 4.9 respectively). Windows 2000 marks Windows 5.0 as the next major departure from previous functionality (2000 being 5.0, with XP being 5.1 or so, I seem to recall that version number ACTUALLY existing in XP somewhere). While Windows NT was using it's own version numbers before 2000, they do matchup with the Consumer Windows lineup in that way (with NT 4.0 being roughly equivalent to Windows 95/98, and Windows 2000 being NT 5.0). Vista would then be Windows 6 as it is again the next major change in the software, especially given the amount of time before it hit the market.

You can also think of it in terms of hardware requirements. Every COMPLETELY new version of Windows calls for a rather large increase in requirements over the previous full version. The requirements from 95->98->ME were not MAJOR, but the jump from those to Windows 2000/XP are pretty drastic. Similarly, the jump from 2000/XP to Vista is also a fairly large one, and requires a pretty beefy machine compared to the last major release.

Also, finally, look at the drivers setup choices for many hardware componenents. Windows 9x products are often linked together, with drivers for 95 being compatible with 98 (though not always backwards compatible, necessarily). Similarly, Windows 2000 and XP are often the same. Vista generally seems to be the next standalone driver type.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, that's just how I've seen it.
