Highly Critical bug report - Rare Data Corruptions (NTFS), on SRV2003,XPx64,VistaX64 and SRV2008
for a few months I am coping with a very critical bug. I found actually no official way to report it to Microsoft.
Therefore, I am asking you kindly to forward it to the responsible team, probably Core OS development,
persons responsible for NTFS.SYS. Please be aware that this is actually a very critical bug report and I
checked possible causes on my end several times to make sure the error is actually inside the OS Kernel.
Bug Description:
- Operating Systems affected: XP x64, Vista x64, Server 2008, Server 2008 (I did not check 32-bit Versions !)
- Hardware: More than one CPU core seems to abet actual occurrence of the bug
- File System: NTFS (3.1), ALL cluster sizes (!)
Symptom:
Windows will corrupt data written to files in very rare cases when a very high number (> 10000) of files gets opened,
written, closed sequentially.
Here are more details:
I have a software in place that needs to write ~15000 data files, in intervals of e.g. 60 minutes.
10000 (66.6%) of these files are very small database cache indexes, about 1-5kB in size.
The remaining 5000 carry actual compressed data and are about 500kB - 5000kB each.
Every hour, each file is read, appended a bit of data, re-compressed and re-written to disk.
This results in about 300.000 file open -> read -> write -> close operations per day.
To make it short, I noticed that about 1 out of 500.000 file write transactions in this scenario will write corrupted data to disk. The data corruption manifests itself in only a few bytes written "wrong", or a few extra bytes just "inserted" in the otherwise OK looking file.
It appears to be an issue with NTFS+the kernel disk caching mechanism, because: The problem _disappears_,
when you call FlushFileBuffers() after writes.
Also, calling Sleep(about 100ms) between the disk writes seems to prevent corruptions, but I am uncertain.
The problem worsens much, if you have, e.g. a transparent Disk Defragmenter running. The problems seems worse when running on multiple CPU cores. Setting a drives "optimize for advanced performance" option also seems to worsen it.
It is unrelated to which kind of System Calls you use, whether _open, _write and _close (CRT) or GetOpenFileHandle, WriteFile (Win32) etc.
Thanks for your time.

Hello, Marc
I forwarded the issue to NTFS team. Thanks for your time and for reporting this behavior to us!

Marc,
The NTFS team is trying to repro this behaviour internally. We will keep you posted on the progress.

Hello Marc,
There are a few issues we'd like to know about the corruption:
1. Are there any file system filters present?
2. You've mentioned "file write transaction"; does it mean you were using TXF(Transactional File System) APIs in your software?
3. If possible, could you please share a sample repro program or some code fragment so we have a clear picture of the file operations the software takes?
Thanks,
Janet

Are you still able to reproduce this issue?. We would love to get a repro program from you if that is the case..

Vista's New Freeze Feature
- Frequent unexplained system lockups
- Inability of users to stop non-responsive processes
- Driver and program inompatibility
- Shotgunned security model, wherein Microsoft addressed potential security breaches by placing a virtual fortress around the most common administrative tasks ( Nice going Microsoft !!!)
- A really cute and bloated interface which only serves to LOOK more like a MAC...
That's just to name a few.
If one wants an operating system that offers no new real value add features, is overpriced, segmented to too many versions, and basically a diminishing return to scale and a burden to administrators everywhere, Vista would be my candidate.

After countless searches I have seen nothing from Microsoft to rectify this problem. In fact you come across as a hideous bunch of con artists selling this operating system which is clearly still riddled with bugs. What's worse is, some people have suggested that this is simply a case of one of your updates causing a corruption. One of the ONLY things you would expect would be safe to download and install into your laptop or PC and, if true, it's the cause of all the problems.
I have uninstalled my anti-virus along with other programs, software etc and done a fresh install forcing me to risk all my data on back up hds, all to now avail and no success. Judging by threads on here and threads on other message boards across the net this is a problem that's been around for almost a year, possibly even a year and yet NOBODY from Microsoft have come forward with a solution. It's an utter disgrace and I honestly don't think I've ever been quite so angry about a situation like this before in my life.
People deserve answers, I'm quite sure they want answers and they want them right now!!!

Same problem with lenova thinkpad. Bought a new system that keeps freezing regularly. Most of the times it happens right after some idle time. Always had to do hard shutdown for it. Once I left it on for a whole day to see if the problem rectifies but it does not and I had to do a system restore after that because the system was not booting because of some missing file.
Does anybody know a solution for it? I don't like to do reboot especially in the middle of meetings.

Kingmob, I have exactly the same problem as you.
Same laptop, same amount of time (3 wks), etc.
Have you managed to resolve the problem???

Threading
IMHO. this is due to using what I think is fundamentally the wrong approach to displaying the threading information. In an NNTP reader (at least mine) the indented thread display shows only the title and name of the responder, and it shows the entire tree. Clicking on any item displays the message in a different pane.
While the NNTP approach might be feasible, I would like to suggest another idea: Keep the current list view (which most folks seem to like), but for each post have a two-line header, like so:
Sam Jarawan on Friday, July 11, 2008 2:32:25 PM
In response to: maxruben on Friday, July 11, 2008 2:25:19 AM
I feel that this scheme would have the following advantages:
1. While it does not provide the full thread information that an indented display does, I feel that it does deliver the essential context that is missing in the current list view.
2. A single display could be used for all users (no list/thread option required)
3. It is a minimal change to the current list display.
4. There is no problem with over-indenting of a long thread, because there is no indenting.
5. The two line header would also allow vertical space on the right side for display of the full set of posting options (Reply, Quote, Edit, Vote, Mark, Propose...) that are available in the single thread view.
6. The same two-line header approach could be used in both the preview and the single thread view (though personally I think the single thread view would be redundant if all the posting options were in the preview).
Any comments?

Do people just not think that seeing the threading context is important? Personally, I feel that it is very important, but I do not use the new threading view, because I do not find very inconvenient.

Vista Ultimate X64 comments- positive and negative
POSITIVE RESULTS:
1-It has a really great firewall.
2-I have tried to crash the system many times and I'm unable to do so. The best I'm able to do is get an error message.
3-Changing the indexing of files is easy, and changing the index profile greatly speeds up the system!
4-X64 boots up in about 42 seconds and shuts down in about 5 seconds. This is really nice for bringing up the system, making a quick input, then shutting the system off quickly.
NEGATIVE RESULTS:
1-MAJOR PROBLEM- Gaming on the x64 vista system is fair. Some X86 high speed games don't display fast even though I have a dual core processor 1.6Ghz AMD and a 128GB graphics card. I think the problem may be in how WOW 64 samling is done. If the sample rate was increased the gaming might be improved. Using a Windows XP system (laptop) with an AMD Athlon 64, 2.6Ghz single core machine with an NVidea G Force graphics chip (64mb) the speed of these games is awesome. Improvement can be made here.
2-When plugging in a 2gb stick, if I don't answer the (scan) question fast enough, the system temporarily freezes up until I unplug the stick and plug it back in. Estimated resonse time-about 20 seconds, This is a bug.
3-Power management could be improved- When I shut the system down, it should shut down completely, i.e., no current drain on the battery at all. This is not the case. If I leave the system off for two days, only 70% battery capacity is left. However, this is inconsistent. About 40% of the time, when the system is left off for two or more days, the battery power is 100%. Why??
4-Cache for the files could be increased. This would help when trying to scroll through 100 pictures. They delay displaying up to 1-15 seconds (approximately).
5-Memory management could be improved. I have 4GB RAM loaded in the system. The maximum amount of memory I have been able to see the system use is about 1.6GB, even doing extensive data base translation, gaming, etc.
Well, that's it. Vista X64 is a really good OS. If the problems above could be addressed, it would be an excellent OS. I really like how fast it is. If you have any comments, please let me know. My email address is n1uu@msn.com.
All the best to the VISTA TEAM,
David

Graphics - Using HiDef on my display Vista seems to get the animation right but not the positioning. Bought a 512Mb graphics card which helped but still very limited since MS provide no level of configuration capability.
Appearance - Ever see something that someone had tried too hard to make look different - Vista springs to mind. Standard apps like explorer are cluttered and why has 'search' been removed from most menus?
Application confirmation - so sick of being asked to confirm running something then confirm again!
Compatability - crashed lots of times installing drivers (Hauppauge) and software (Visual Studio) with anoying pops to say I can use system restore. Lots and lots and lots of applications wont work with Vista (even in compatability mode) - just the same as XP64.
Does recognise my 4Gb RAM but seems to utilise the swap file more with lots of RAM free.
Cut and paste in explorer quite often leave an empty folder structure when cutting and pasting.
Oh and did I mention the advisory popups !!!!!
Had to update firmware on CDWriter to allow it to work with Vista - so much for backward compatability.
Oh and did I mention the advisory popups !!!!
Bottom line - not impressed at all. Works like a beta version with most things outside Microsoft struggling to work with it - not a chance in hell I would even entertain my work pcs going to Vista - 32\64 bit. What was the point of Vista - oh thats right - to charge another license fee.
Oh and did I mention the advisory popups !!!!

Warning on SQL 2008 SSRS Gotcha
Just yesterday I loaded up SQL 2008 on my dev workstation to start testing some things out. Today, I opened up VS and started a new reporting services project - I noticed that it didn't ask me for a target (like a winform project asks for a version of .net), so I figured it pulled it from the reporting services engine during connection. Wrong! I spent most of the day tweaking a report only to realize that even though I can run it fine in the dev env, I can't publish it or downgrade it. Everything I did was a waste, and I get to do it all over again, after I uninstall the CTP of 2008, and hope that it works then.
I wish there was a way to run RSReportHost outside of VS, but evidently that isn't supported. I guess that would be too easy or something.
Anyway, Be Careful!

Under the general tab my IP address was set back to the default of "all unassigned" I just had to reinsert my exchange IP address and the problem was solved. All email is going through fine now.
unable to establish network/internet connection after installing update 950582
Hi,
i recently couldn't connect to the internet anymore. Upon opening the vista network center you could see that the connection was 'limited'.
After a lot of troubleshooting i found the culprit, this windows update:
MS08-038 – Important: Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (950582)
After uninstalling the update my network/internet connection worked again. So, MS-guys please find out what's wrong witht his update and fix it.
my setup:
windows vista ultimate 32bit - dutch
pc connected via ethernet cable between nforce ethernet controller and USR Sureconnect ADSL wireless gateway
Oddly enough surfing wirelessly posed no problem. I connected an usb wifi-receiver and with that i did get a full network/internet connection.

a feature suggestion for the entire Windows platform and all Windows based toolsets
(But I didn't know where this kind of suggestion should be posted ... so I took a guess & posted it here ... smile)
All mouse right-click popup menus should have two additional options
- Get Item's Name - copies "NAME" of target item to clipboard
- Get Item's Full Name - copies "FULLNAME" of target item to clipboard
what's the difference? Name :vs: Full Name
- Get Item's Name could be things like
- File Name
- Strored Procedure Name
- User's ID
- any "thing" where the "item" has a name
- Get Item's Full Name would be Name plus any appropriate address prefix
- Full Path / File Name
- Server Name . Database Name . Stored Proc Name
- AD path / User's ID
Please feel free to move this suggestion to anyplace more appropriate

Windows Server 2003 VPN User Credentials Question
Hi mates, i've just set up my first VPN server with IPSEC security. I looks like everything works perfect, but I've found a security "issue". I don't know if that's how it works or maybe I've left something in the configuration.
The matter is that if I connect to the vpn just with the domain user name and I try to access to any shared folder, it uses the local administrator account to access. But if I connect with DOMAIN\user it uses the domain user credentials and can't access for example to a \\hostname\c$ folder, that's the way I would like it to work.
Is there any way to force it to only use the domain user?
The problem is that we have to give access to our lan to another client, which probably have admin rights locally and we can't let him use admin rights in our lan.
What can i do??
Thanx mates

Hello,
It should be expected that you should use DOMAIN\user or user@domain username to Windows authentication VPN. Otherwise, the RAS server will recognize it as the local user.
The \\hostname\c$ is the administrative shares that only the local Administrators groups have the FULL CONTROL permission.
To enable the domain users (except Domain Admins) access to computer's administrative shares:
1. you should add the domain user to the Administrators group. O
2. Create separate shares with proper share permission and folder security for domain user's access.

Submit data from InfoPath 2007 to a Sharepoint Contacts List Template
Well, I found a very useful tool to discover the field names on any sharepoint list. You only have to provide the name of the root site where the list was created and the List's GUID that is found on the address bar {#######...} when you look at the list settings.
http://www.binarywave.com/products/downloads/default.aspx
The tool is: http://www.binarywave.com/products/downloads/Free%20Utilities/eGroup%20SharePoint%20Utilities.zip
The reason for my errors was the wrong field names I was using. The tool provided me with the exact field names to successfully create this solution.
The real field names from the contact list template are:

This was the post I written:
___________________________________________________________
Hi,
I followed the procedure from the link below on how to submit data to a custom list on a sharepoint from InfoPath. I completed the procedure successfully. Also I tried the procedure on different custom lists and got successful tests.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc162745.aspx
I modified the code and the CAML XML fragment to update a sharepoint list I created from a Contacts List Template but when I include some of the fields in the CAML XML fragment and form's code they cause to not create and/or update records. I created this list in order for me to link this contacts list to Outlook. The Infopath form will create/update contacts on demand basis as this form will be used to document customers calls and track them as required using a sharepoint document library.
These are the fields that were created from the SharePoint Contacts list Template and the modifications I did to get the list I needed:
Last Name
First Name (renamed to FirstName)
Full Name (deleted)
E-mail Address (renamed to Email)
Company
Job Title (renamed to JobTitle)
Business Phone (renamed to BusinessPhone)
Home Phone (deleted)
Mobile Phone (renamed to MobilePhone)
Fax Number (renamed to FaxNumber)
Address
City
State
Postal Code (renamed to PostalCode)
Country (deleted)
Web Page (deleted)
Notes (deleted)
Categories
E-mail (deleted)
Company Main Phone (deleted)
Mailing Address (deleted)
Changed (created as directed on the msdn procedure)
Delete (created as directed on the msdn procedure)
The only fields that work are:
Last Name (through the field name: Title) I found another article explaining that.
FirstName
Company
JobTitle
Categories
For example the First Name field was required to be renamed to FirstName in order to make this work. I tried field by field. Email field was the same.
This is the CAML XML fragment that works, also I made comments on the code related to other fields:
<Batch OnError="Continue">
<Method ID="1" Cmd="New">
<Field Name="ID"></Field>
<Field Name='Title'></Field>
<Field Name="FirstName"></Field>
<Field Name="Email"></Field>
<Field Name="Company"></Field>
<Field Name="JobTitle"></Field>
<Field Name="Categories"></Field>
<Field Name="Changed">false</Field>
<Field Name="Delete">false</Field>
</Method>
</Batch>
If I put one of the other fields or all of them, I tried one by one, and enable the respective lines, when I preview the infopath form, none of the fields are created or updated.
<Batch OnError="Continue">
<Method ID="1" Cmd="New">
<Field Name="ID"></Field>
<Field Name='Title'></Field>
<Field Name="FirstName"></Field>
<Field Name="Email"></Field>
<Field Name="Company"></Field>
<Field Name="JobTitle"></Field>
<Field Name="BusinessPhone"></Field>
<Field Name="Categories"></Field>
<Field Name="Changed">false</Field>
<Field Name="Delete">false</Field>
</Method>
</Batch>
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gabriel Perez
