too many sticky threads

too many sticky threads

Am I the only one here considering that there are too many sticky threads? There are sub-forums where they represent half of the threads displayed per page. I believe this is way too much. I've been seeing a lot of forums, but none, not even far, from what I see here.

A humble Suggestion..

Hi,
First of all congrats for such a promising and great wonderful look..
Awesooooooomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!
This is really good to see and the funtionalities have been drastically improved.
Feels great.

One suggestion though, the old forum had a drop down list of forums and was an easy way to navigate to any forum.
I am missing that feature in this version. It was very easy to navigate via that combo-box.
I hope you would put back the feature into the current look again.

I would keep updating this post as I explore the new features..

Thanks and keep up the good work..

Suggesttion#2: The sticky/admin posts should be kept away from the normal posts. What I mean is that they should be kept in a different area so that the user can distinguish between them and the normal question/answer posts. I got confused and had to spend some time distinguishing between which are the sticky ones and which one are the latest questions being posted. There are actually a lot of sticky threads. I hope you get my point.

Always mark the post that helped you as "Answer". That helps future users to locate answers quickly.

Avatar problems

In my user profile I've tried to add an avatar (10 Kb, jpeg). After I specified the path to file and clicked "Save profile" - nothing has happened.

Are jpeg avatars supported?

Reply:
False alarm, avatar was added successfuly.
However, it is strange why at Save Profile settings phase there were no avatar...

Formatting BDC Data using SharePoint Designer

I recently used SharePoint Designer to edit XSL of my BDC Web Part(s).

BDC Web parts display raw data returned from external line of business application, and master-detail lists can be associated, actions can be created, profile page can be edited...all those functionalies are great!  Then I wanted to format data ($ values, decimal points, images etc). SharePoint Designer was handy tool! Whatever I could do with other Data View Web Part in Designer, I can do that all to BDC Web Part!

While I am entereing this thread as comments if this helps someone, here is also another link this forum suggested to me as related questions! https://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1683578&SiteID=1

Error: Subreport could not be shown

Can anyone please help out with this issue:

Here is the problem,

I developed 2 reports in Report Server and deployed them to  //LocalHost/Reports

The First report is the Main Report and the Second report is the Sub Report to the Main Report, when I deployed the reports to the server tried to run them from the server, they rendered fine, however when users try to run the main report runs fine, but when they try to drill down to the sub report I get the Error: Subreport could not be shown

I did my research before posting this thread:

-       I passed parameter to the sub report.

-       I made sure the size of the sub report similar to the main report.

-       I'm using the same name for my data sources for the Main Report and Sub Report (not shared Data Source though).

After checking all this I kept getting the same error.

At the end, I decided to develop simple 2 reports (Main and Sub Report) no parameters involved. I used the same data source name for the 2 reports, same report size with no parameters in the 2 reports. I deployed the project to the server, ran the report from the server, got no error. Then I tried on the User computer the Main Report rendered fine but when I tried to drill down to the sub report I got the same error Error: Subreport could not be shown.

Does anyone have any ideas what's causing this problem?

Thank you

John

Reply:

Hey John,

Check the Report Server log file. My server has the logs at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services\LogFiles

There should be some reason for the error reported in the log file. Could be a permission issue on the report.

Also, one thing confuses me. Subreports do not require drilldown. They should be shown in the body of the main report. What are you selecting to drilldown to the subreport?

Reply:

Hi John,

Once check these.

1. Make sure the name given for the 'SubReport' in Main Report and the name given for the sub report in the reportmanager should be same.

2. Make Sure Main Report and SubReport should be in same folder in the Report Manager.

Reply:

Got it. It was permissions issues

Thank you all

each time I refresh I see a different set of servers

I have set up a Windows Server 2008 based network. The AD server is on a standalone box and I have another host supporting 4 virtual servers. The host with the virtual servers has 3 NICs; one for the host and two for the virtual servers. When I click on My Network only some of the virtual servers show up. If I click Refresh I get a different set of servers.

Why can't I see all the active servers all the time?

Reply:

Could you please provide us with some information about your configuration?

What is the network configuration on your AD server?  Is the AD server also your DNS Server?  DHCP Server?  IP addresses and masks?

How are the NICs on the second server set up?  The one for the host should have multiple options selected, including the IP protocols.  The two for the virtualization service should only have the Microsoft Virtual Network Service Protocol box checked in the properties.  IP addresses and masks?

How did you define the networks in the virtual machines?  External/Local/Private?  IP addresses and masks?

windows media player has stopped working " ANSWERED "

I have found the SOLUTION for "windows media player has stopped"

I was having the same problem as most of you. My media player would stop working before even starting to work! I looked around and nobody had the solution. the problem is that my "ffdshow.ax" (codecs and filters) were corrupted. So as soon as WMP would open it would stop working right away. I removed all my old codecs and filters....reinstalled VISTA CODEC BUNDLE.... and repaired ac3filter files. So in short the codecs and or filters on your computers might be responsible for this problem.

Good luck to all

IBCM needs much more detail

Since I'm in the process of trying to mitigate a near disaster in regards to a design my company did for our current customer, I feel the need to vent a little about the docuemntation surrounding IBCM.  Although the scenarios, Deployment guides, etc. are adequate in laying out what the advantages and disadvantages are, they don't address the most significant factor in ANYONE deciding whether or not this is going to be useful to them.

And that is simply that any site system role has to be a domain member. So this puts significant burdens on the design team in trying to meet not only the customers needs, but also DMZ common sense/best practices such as you don't expose your intranet to internet traffic.  And just blythely stating that the customer can simply stand up an AD structure in the DMZ pretty much ignores the whole licensing issue. Standing up a new AD forest means my enterprise license has to now cover additional servers, DCs and I've got to figure out how I'm going to protect the intranet AD from attacks against this new AD which by definition will need ports open from it to the intranet so that SCCM will be able to communicate bewteen site systems.

I know that the ports used are addressed, which is very helpful, but what also needs to be addressed is the scenario in which the customer states flat out that security is not going to allow:

1) an internal domain member server to have a connection open to the DMZ.
2) there is now way a domain member server will be placed in the DMZ.
3) there is no way a new AD will be stood up in the DMZ.

These are not statements I'm imagining customers making, they've already been made. And they've been made either all together, or separately at different client sites. So how do I design IBCM and meet these security concerns? Currently I can suggest IPSec, ISA bridging/tunnelling (although there's no documentation available for the ISA configuration), a combination of those, resetting the firewall ports used by SCCM, etc., but bottom line is the MP/DP/SUP/FSP have to be on a server that's a member of a domain and most customers are not going to buy into any scenario that places domains/AD forests in the DMZ unless they set up their DMZ that way to start with. (and a common thread whenever I mention that is "doesn't that defeat the whole point to a DMZ?).

Also, the Scenario Network Diagrams need to be completely redone to reflect that fact that the site systems are domain members and to which domain they belong. Failing that, at the very least they should address how/which ports should be opened to allow the scenario to be implemented, while still addressing/meeting security concerns.

That can be found in the docs and I've answered one of your questions in a separate thread even with a link to where it's documented.

Even the firwall settings can be found in a VERY detailed way here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632618.aspx.

SCCM is a very huge and powerful product that can be customized and scaled in many different ways. It's impossible to cover each and every single scenario and each and every technology touched by SCCM (AD, firewalls, permission, SQL, msi's, ...), BUT the SCCM docs team did a very great job in putting their documentation together.

So I don't see a problem - except that you're complaining about that you are not able to set up SCCM to meet all of your customer's needs. But such a design question cannot be solved completely in a forum, because there a way too many factors you have to take care of.

I'm sorry that you've had a tough time trying to implement Internet-based client management.  It's a complex feature and isn't self-contained– it has numerous external dependencies and there are many variations in which it can be installed.  For example, in addition to the 9 different server placement designs, there are also variations within each of these as you've discovered with respect to domain and forest placement, but all these are independent from IBCM in that the feature doesn't have a specific requirement for domain/forest placement and that is why these are not shown in the diagrams.

The only feature requirement for domains (which is documented in Prerequisites for Internet-Based Client Management) is that the Internet-based site systems reside within an Active Directory domain.  I would expect customers to check the feature prerequisites in addition to a network diagram.  However, it has always been a requirement that site systems reside on domain-joined computers because the product leverages domain security.  When a system is distributed, it's very hard to secure it without central security.  Configuration Manager is aimed at enterprise customers who already have Active Directory performing this function of central security, so it uses that rather than creating a new and separate security system.

IBCM is not a feature to implement without careful planning to ensure that you can meet the feature requirements and implement them in a way that satisfies your business requirements.  This feature was designed with the expectation that customers will have the resources to configure the external dependencies themselves, or get in expertise as needed – and the IBCM documentation reflects this design.  The product documentation includes details for configuring Configuration Manager but not supporting products or technologies - because we can document only what the Configuration Manager product group owns and supports with their code.  The feature probably isn't suitable for you if you can't meet the prerequisites or the overheads do not justify the investment.

The IBCM documentation has been available since Beta 2 so that it could be checked by as many people as possible before RTM.  However, with all the possible variations I can see how some details might still be missing and when these are specific to Configuration Manager, we will do our best to incorporate these in future updates.  That's one of the reasons why we check these forums, but you can also send documentation feedback to SMSDocs@Microsoft.com.

I understand what you're saying, but I disagree. Even if the only purpose this forum serves is to act as a point from which to start discussion on issues people are having, then the forum has a useful purpose. Sure, just providing an email address would do that too, but the forum at least allows people to see they're not alone.

There are several threads on this forum where people, myself included, have been rattling around various phone & email help desks without getting answers to our problems. Posting on this forum has allowed many people to move forward with the issues they have been having.

Perhaps a better course of action would be to widen the scope of this forum so that responsible people from other teams involved in providing content etc for the elearning site were also involved.

One issue is privacy - in many cases where the discussion is taken off the forum and into email it is to allow a direct one-to-one exchange between the customer and someone at Microsoft to allow specific issues to be examined in detail.

One suggestion might be for the admin people to post back to a thread that was taken in to an email discussion when the issue is resolved, providing any general information that might help other people experiencing the same issue.

Actually, I have to disagree with myself now.

A whole week has now gone by since I reported a problem with redeeming an E-Learning Voucher.
I've posted on this forum, I've mailed the microsoft_support@training.com address on the back of the voucher - all I've had so far is someone ask for the codes on the vouchers.

No resolution, no reply to indicate the problem is being looked at. Nothing.

As I said on this forum, this problem is even worse than not being able to purchase learning material through the shopping cart because in this case I've already spent my money, but now I've got no product to show for it.

The lack of action on the part of Microsoft and Element-K who are behind the above email address is once again disgraceful.

If you're not going to fix the problem, who do I request a refund for my useless vouchers from? It's not the fault of the company I purchased the vouchers from. It's between Microsoft & Element-K. So, who do I send my bill to?

This forum is a waste of time. It serves no purpose if customers are not going to be responded to in good time. Good time in my book means within 24 hours. 48 at a push.

Hi Gavin--

I am very sorry that it has taken some time for me to reply to this thread and to your issue.  I was out of the office and we also had the holiday here in the United States.

This issue is indeed with the voucher and not with the Microsoft Learning Site.  We will make sure that your vouchers are working for the courses expected and that your issues are being taken care of.

Please email me directly so we can work this issue to a resolution and you continue to be supportive of the Learning Manager application.  You have been a tremendous helpful asset to the forums and we would hate to see you not feel like you are getting what you pay for.

Thanks Alicia. I've now managed to redeem both of my remaining vouchers, so there's no problem now - I've got what I paid for.

Obviously no one wants to deprive hard working people of their holidays, but perhaps there are lessons that can be learned here.

Maybe given that the audience for this forum is international, there could be a notice posted on the forum to indicate that the forum will be unmonitored for local holiday periods?

Maybe additional people could help out answering the issues to take some of the pressure of Alicia who seems to be the only person who answers customers issues?

People have problems getting support on e-learning via phone and email - this forum seems to be the only means by which people get E-learning issues resolved. So perhaps widening the scope of this forum to cover the actual training content and issues surrounding voucher usage would be something to think about?

Anyway, all seems to be working again now, and I've spent my vouchers so I don't need to pursue a refund from anyone.

I'm back in supportive mode. :)

Make a light verison

It would be good if you had a light version of the forums that went easy on the JS, for people with slower connections, or slower computers, since a lot of work is processed by the cpu, and a lot of animations/etc lag.

Something like hotmail's or gmail's classic/light version is what I have in mind.

Toggle line numbers in code snippets

It would be nice if we could toggle line numbers in code snippets in a post. I don't mean for the post author specifying this and having it hard-coded into the formatting of the post, I want the users browsing the forum to be able to toggle line numbers at their will.

The problem at the moment is a post author can post a code snippet with line numbers on (i.e. hard-coded in the post), then users have no choice but to copy the code with line numbers in.

I suggest you have a link to toggle them on/off at the users discretion, like some wiki software's do. E.g. see here: http://moinmo.in/WikiSandBox

30 minutes later open the thread and hover over the link and there is no tooltip.
Opened the editor and checked the link and it is still in the properties.
Canceled the edit and went back to thread and it worked.
Refreshed the page and then it does not work again.
Opened a new instance of the forums and went to that thread and no tooltip.

I looked very carefully at this model but opted to spend a little bit more on the 0769-A64. The A64 comes with Vista Business plus, in some cases, a free "downgrade" to XP Pro.  The other advantages are the Pentium Dual Core T2330 processor (a cut down Merom-2 Core2 cpu) and the 120GB hard drive. The XP downgrade is a real bonus; create your rescue disk set AND do a full backup of the entire drive and then install the XP pro operating system for a much faster system.  In 12 months time, you can re-install Vista Business and get a STABLE service pack upgrade of Vista which should be available on CD by then.  If money is really tight, the M570 Celeron system is OK as it also has the Lenovo Care button.  That is a great feature of Lenovo systems.  If a major crash occures you can restore to factory condition even if you cannot get into Windows.  It is features like that, plus simple driver and BIOS upgrades with one or two clicks that make either unit an excellent buy, especially for those with limited computer skills or without deep pockets.
