magicJack

Hi all:

My magicJack will not work in windows 7.  Works in XP and Vista.
Anyone have any ideas?

Multiple threads on this , i believe that one of them reported that there are supposed to be new drivers towards the end of January

By the way, the shortcut suggested in the forum works GREAT!!!!

Installing virtual adapters

Trying to install virtual adapters in Windows 7 is a nightmare.
Since im lacy i have all my programs as ISO, but trying to install a virtual drive took a whole day (CloneDrive, partial works, but no drive will appear, but the autoluanch will trigger when double clicking the iso files).

My next problem is even worse. I'm using Sonic Wall NetExtender to create the VPN connection to work.
When trying to install the "SSL-VPN Netextender Adapter" the installation fails, since this is trying to make a virtual network adapter.

It looks like Windows 7 is refusing to install any drivers for hardware that not exists in your "PC"

is there any work around for installing virtual hardware?

Regarding the virtual CD/DVD drive, I use sucessfully Phantom CD

There are quite a few threads about this same thing. Try Power ISO also.

Well my problem is not the virtual drive, but installing the virtual network adapter for vpn.....

The following use to work in Vista x64. I have no clue if it still works or now. You could give it a try. Please be aware that I have not used it in windows 7 and have no clue if it can mess up the operating system or now. Which could lead to a reinstall.

You could try typing "cmd" in the Search Box included in the Start menu. Next, press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open a command prompt window with elevated privileges. Now enter bcdedit /set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS in order to disable Driver Signing and reboot.

Good luck

Reply:
bcdedit /set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS didn't crash the system, it actually didn't do anything at all.

this is the debug logg i get when trying to install

No MSN Games for me

So I went to the MSN Games, and tried to play Luxor Amun Riwsing and Cubis 2. Interestingly enough none of them worked in Win 7 x86, IE8B2 it says failed to download and install the CAB file. I'm pretty sure it has downloaded, so it may not be the talented IE8 people after all. So I figured IE8 people screwed it up again, and decided to try it with FireFox 3.0.5 - same result except this time it opens the game and the wait for the little yellow install Active-X contorl bar begins, but never ever ends. I figured if the two very different browsers have the same problem, albeit with the slightly different simptoms it might be the problem with the OS. So my question to the MS team is - don't you guys test anything before the release of the software?

Reply:
Yes they do test the software.  There was many builds done before this one.  I was able to not only play Cubis 2 online in IE but download it and run it from my desktop as well.  This issue is with your system setup.  Did you do a fresh install of Windows 7 or upgrade?

Exchange vs. Zimbra bachelor's thesis

Hi!
I'm a third year computer engineer student which is currently working on my bachelor's thesis. My thesis is a completly comparison of Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Zimbra Network Edition. I know this topic is beginning to get widly used and evaluated, but this is very relevant for our enlisting company that is considering migrating to Zimbra from Exchange 2003. We will also go very in depth in this over 3 months.

My projectgroup is currently working on miscellaneous research and for that I could use some help from experienced administrators here at this magnificent forum:

1) We need to simulate a great amount of active users on both Zimbra and Exchange. Is it any scripts for this? A independent stresstest that can run on both mailsolutions is needed.

2) Any topics on this subject that currently haven't been enlighted seriously from a independent view? Maybe something that you system administrators would be interested in knowing but haven't had the time to find it out?

I want to emphasize that this project will be totally independent and no part is taken. I hope your feedback will be the same even if you are exchange disciples

Thanks in advance. All feedback is appreciated.

Reply:
You might want to test it against Exchange 2007.  Exchange 2003 is an older version.

any ideas to what this device might be?

its a motherboard chipset device driver, its what tells the pc when to wake up, i believe its name can actually vary from chipset to chipset, but i believe its the away driver. Anyway the driver should be included inn either your motherboard chipset driver cd, or by downloading the same from the motherboard manufacturers website.

I turned it off (disable) and its no longer in my Device manager.

Do you mean that you are running the installation of both programs at the same time?

Let us know.

If you are running them at the same time this most likely will be the issue.  Run the install for 1 and after that completes then install the other.

Can I create a "show desktop" icon

I use the " show desktop" icon in the quick launch a lot. I notice Windows 7 does not have one. is there any way to create one and get it into the quick launch area.

thanks

Reply:
Not sure if you can create one in that area. But one does exist on the taskbar's right corner. If you only hover the mouse over it, the desktop is shown but as you move the cursor away the windows return. If you click on it, all the windows are minimized.

hi!
When you look at the outer right corner of the task bar, there is a iconless button. If you click on it, the desktop will be shown, any started application will be minimized.

Thank you both. I found it and I can live with it on the right side. My desktop screen is a little too wide for the monitor and I can see about one quarter of that icon. Without your help, it would have taken a while to just stumble across it. Thanks a bunch.

It's the normal size of this icon.
Also you can use Win+M shortcut to minimize all the windows

------------------------------------
Reply:
There are some useful simple keyboard shortcuts as well if your into those:
Win+Space peaks at the desktop.
Win+D  shows the desktop and Win+D again restores the screen back to before you viewed the desktop.
Depending on where the mouse is, it may be quicker to use those.

Thanks elyoh, I've always kind of avoided keyboard shortcuts but in this case, the "show desktop" shortcut is the way to go.. I think I'll get a lot of use from these shortcuts....thanks

Clicking any Window and shaking it will cause all open windows to minimize (except the one which is active). Shaking the window again will restore the others.

Just another alternative. :)

Suggestions for libraries

1. have an option to change the icon of the library ( other than edit the .library-ms )

2. have an option to turn on/off display of folder location in the navigation ( currently default is display )

3. not sure if needed but i noticed you can't add a junction point to a library

Reply:
I'd also like the ability to use them as sort of hybrid search folders; let me choose to have a library that only shows powerpoint files, for instance.

Having problems with Internet Disconnecting?

Just thought I'd post this piece of advice on here.  As seen in the networking section my internet kept cutting off at random intervals.  It turns out it was because I was connected through my onboard lan card.  I installed a Netgear LAN card and ever since, the disconnections have stopped.  Being as these cards a cheapy obtained thought it might be worth mentioning here incase any1 else is having problems.

Reply:
I'm having this exact problem. Got a XFX nVidia nForce 780i motherboard with 2xgigabit network cards and in windows 7 I keep getting disconnected all the time, it's really freaking annoying. It shouldn't be nessesary to buy a seperate networkcard (I got no free slots to put one in with gpus taking up all slots). Everything works fine in XP, Vista, Ubuntu and whatever other os I've run on the exact same setup but with windows 7 the disconnecting is killing me. Especially when I'm watching a movie, whatever movie I watch no matter which media player my internet gets disconnected and it's impossible to get connected to the network again without closing the media player, I've treid with Windows Media Player, VLC, Zoom Player and Media Player Classic and it's the exact same ____ for all.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I had  a similar problem,  I actually removed the nic and connected to the Mb, however I found that the Marvel Yukon drivers were not solving the disconnection issues. I downloaded the Vista64 drivers from the Gigabyte site (and although they are older) they seem to have solved the issue.

Windows 7 64 , Media Center , Live TV

I have an issue with Live TV and Win 7 64 , as you can see form my screenshot there is some sort of power spike on the #4 core  of my CPU , in Win Vista the multi-core CPU runs nice and smooth.

Where you see the red spikes on the multi-core monitor it gives me a lag or something on my live TV , but the spike is only on core #4.

I hope this helps sort this WMC issue out because otherwise Win 7 IS AWESOME!!

MVP for Learning..open discussion

I suppose I am going to fire this one out there.

Should there be an MVP for Learning. From the MVP FAQ, MVPs  "are exceptional technical community leaders from around the world who have been awarded for voluntarily providing technical expertise towards technical communities supporting Microsoft products or technologies. An MVP is awarded for contributions over the past year."

I would say that Microsoft Learning is a product and a lot of people on different forums such as this one, provide a lot of information ot the general public by promoting, clarifying and advising people on how best to procede with their certification paths.

Its a discussion I have been having with some people in whether one is warranted?

Just wondering what is the opinion of others and possibly if we are lucky, some of the folks from Redmond.

I have suggested this numerous times. I feel many of us put in a lot of time and dedication in helping other in their pursuit to achieve Microsoft certifications. Most of us help through newsgroups, blogs, written articles, emails, private and public speaking and tutoring. I cannot count the number of hours in 9 years that I have performed these tasks.

Although I am not looking for awards and such, I do feel that it would be a nice honor for those who have sacrificed more than I to help others.

Using the Desktop Preview Feature

The problem is that when I click on the button, the window I am trying to see past and onto my desktop reappears for a second and then minimizes. This only happens when I hover over the button for the transparency effect and then click the button

So, it goes like this:

  1. Window open, maximized
  2. Hover over toggle button
  3. Window disappears
  4. Click on toggle button
  5. Window reappears ---- Abnormal Behavior
  6. Window minimizes.

Issue with ATI Radeon HD 2400 video card and installation of Windows 7

I would send in a report from the windows 7 desktop but I can't access it, sort of.

I was having issues with the installation of Windows 7 and kept getting memory dumps each time. Looking at the dump file it would be the following

BugCheck 116, {fffffa8005218010, fffff880034207e8, 0, 2}

Probably caused by : atikmdag.sys ( atikmdag!Dispatch_CollectDbgInfo+0 )

So the file is a driver for ATI videocards.

I have an onboard video card also so I removed my ATI and installed it using that. Works perfect. No issues.

I then downloaded from ATI their beta drivers for Windows 7 (Catalyst) for both x86 and x64. I get another error but that is with the Catalyst itself. I get error "Error Detecting" or something like that, but that is for ATI to look at.

Now, I thought ok, it's my ATI Video card. But my wife has the same PC as me, so I took out her video card (damn she was not happy about that) and I installed it in my system. Rebooted PC to Windows 7. Same error message.

I am installing Windows 7 on the following PC

Acer Aspire M5100 Dual Core (AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 6000+ 3.0Mhz
ATI Radeon HD 2400 w/256 megs
4 Gigs of Ram
500 Gig harddrive SATA.

Has anyone alese who has an ATI 2400 card been able to install this?

Reply:
Do not install the drivers for the video card at all.  Windows 7 will go to ATI and download the proper drivers.  You will see then under "UPDATE" and can then install them.  My Radeon ATI X800 driver was installed on the 3rd boot up.  Before installation of the drivers Windows 7 was running my dual moitors without any probloems.  I was able to play graphic intensive games without a hitch.

------------------------------------
Reply:
That is the problem.I am not installing them. This was done during the installation and in order to even finish it, I had to use onboard.

But also I cannot access the net because for some reason, my Marvell Yukon NIC is giving me limited or no connectivity. (That is another issue I need to fix)

So it's the default ones used when it finds an ATI card.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I did not see the drivers ready to bi installed until I looked in the "message center" extreme lower right on computer screen, tiny Flag.

You could try uninstalling the drivers then let Windows go out and fine the appropriate one.

Sharing TV recordings between media centers

I have two media centers, one with Vista Ultimate and one with Windows 7 Beta. The two machines are sharing their respective "TV Recordings" folder with each other (not supported in Vista, but a registry hack will allow you to do that).

The problem I am having is that after a while the any changes on one machine (e.g. a new recording) is not shown on the other machine. Sometimes the content on the shared folder is not visible at all. In both circumstances the only remedy is either a reboot, or restarting the "Windows Media Center Receiver Service" and "Windows Media Center Scheduler Service" services.

Before installing Windows 7, I had 2 Vista Ultimate media centers - and I had the same problem. I don't think this is a network problem, as restarting the services corrects the problem.

I can also replicate the problem if I delete a recording. The deleted recording will disappear on both media - but after that any new recordings will only show up on the media center that "owns" the recorded tv folder (i.e. not on the one that uses the share).

Does anyone else have the same problem?

Reply:
i have the same problem. After rebooting the machine the new recordings on the other machine will be shown. I think it woold be a good thing that windows mediacenter will search for new recordings when it enters the recordings folder.

------------------------------------
Reply:
this is a known issue with Vista. With Windows 7 and HomeGroup it works automatically but I don't know of a way of getting Vista in to the home group

------------------------------------
Reply:
Would you happen to know why?

When both my media centers were on Vista, I had them joined to the same domain so I assume it's not a permission issue. I can't join Windows 7 to the domain, so I use the credentials manager instead.

Windows Live Messenger shown on Desktop when u minimise other windows

Not of great importance i guess, just a little annoying, when i minimise the last or only open window, WLM2009 seems to love appearing on the desktop.

Here, Windows Live 2009 loves to create 2 task bar items instead of one!
1. Task bar window for my 'User' name
2. second Task bar window for the program it self.

How stupid hehehe :)

Verizon VZ Access Manager (Broadband)

Has anyone been able to install VZ Access Manager?  I install the software but it will not find the Blackberry 8830.  The Desktop Manager installed fine.  After I install VZ Access Manager, when it tries to find the phone, it freezes.  It generated an application error in the log citing the tapi32.dll module.

How can i minimize everything on my screen

When i downloaded it, everything was fine then we it got updated everything is big. I already tried the resolution and things in it but its still big

Look at Control Panel, Personalization. You may be set to one of the ease of access themes.

Make sure you have the right drivers for your video card.  The corresponding Vista drivers should work fine.  If you see "Standard Display Adapter," then you are using generic drivers.  As such, you may not be able to set nominal resolution.

check that in you Display settings have size set to 100%

Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display

I think the display driver might be missing here after update. Try to install the video drivers again or update it.

You didnt even read his question in the post, YES you answered the quesiton in the title, but he means makes things smaller, not 'minimise' his windows.

What drivers are you using? I recomend getting the 181.20 Vista drivers for Nvidia cards.

s7orm out!

Disabling CD/DVD burning makes CD/DVDs unreadable in "Computer"

If you disable integrated CD/DVD burning over registry key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer] with adding dword NoCDBurning "1", it prevents also ANY listing of files/folders in your DVD recorder drive, insterted media still gets detected you just cant see anything on it, as soon as you enable it again it goes back to normal. You can still read them in normal DVD drive. I guess its a bug, since i dont see how this could be intended...
