So, I'm joining the fight,
Turn AVG Link Scanner OFF!
------------------------------------
Help text during installation is still about Vista
Start the Installation.
First selecting the language, then continiue to the next Window.
In this Window with the big Button "Jetzt Installieren" (Install now) there is a Link named
"Wissenswertes vor der Windows Installation" ("Know before installing Windows")
Select this Link and a new Window from "Hilfe und Support" (Help and Support) came up.
The Help Text is about "Installing Windows Vista" and not translated.
The Window is small and not resizeable.

Windows 7 on Atom dual core
If MS doesn't bloat it up it will be what Vista should have been.
Win-7 and XP plus Raid-0
Memory, DPC and Wattage: comparison W7 vs Vista (vs XP)
Windows 7 32-bit
Number of service after startup: 58
Maximum available RAM: ~2600 out of 3046 mb
Vista Ultimate 32-bit
Number of services after startup: 70
Maximum available RAM: ~2600 out of 3046 mb
So while the number of services has decreased the memory usage seems to remain the same. Maybe some services have just been put together into one?!
Windows XP
Maximum available RAM: ~2800 out of 3046 mb
Vista Ultimate 64-bit
Maxmimum available RAM: ~3400 out of 4070 mb
Maxmimum available RAM Aero + Defender + Superfetch deactivated: ~3600 out of 4070 mb
Seemingly Vista 64-bit uses over 200 mb more RAM compared to its 32-bit cousin, but on the other side it offers 1000 mb more RAM to begin with. Aero (DWM.EXE), Windows Defender and Superfetch each use around 30-70 mb RAM (varrying by time).
You can win another 15 mb by turning off Search Indexing and another 20 mb by turning off Windows Audio, but given the practical usefulness of Windows Search I wouldn't turn it off for that minor amount.
Both Windows 7 and Vista draw the very same minimum wattage! I did not test wether Windows 7 draws less average wattage, but I seriously doubt that, since most of the power is drawn by the graphic-card and CPU and energy-saving is up to the graphic-card's and CPU drivers for that and don't really lie under Windows' control.
Both Windows 7 and Vista show the same DPC Latencies with properly written drivers! One exception is W7's Idle DPC Latencies for the older Broadcom WLAN drivers, which are substantially better on W7. But once these older driver become active (network traffic happening via WLAN) they are equally bad on W7 (including the ones shipping with W7) as on Vista. New drivers published via "Microsoft Update Catalog" completely solve that for Idle and Activity for on both W7 and Vista, which proves how important drivers are.
But I cannot deny that W7 improved the bad Idle behavior. Furthermore there is a difference between W7 32-bit, XP, Vista 32-bit and Vista 64-bit. W7 32-bit, XP and Vista 64-bit show no signs of DPC problems when the CPU is automatically clocked down via Speedstep while Vista 32-bit is negatively affected by this. This doesn't matter too much though, because under DAW load the CPU usually is clocked to higher rates anyway and thus Vista 32-bit is only partially affected. I did not test W7 64-bit yet.
(Apple's KBDMGR.EXE process has been killed on the following screenshots, because it produces constantly high DPC latencies.)

The bad Idle DPC behavior of NVidia's drivers for 9600M GT are not a problem of W7, it happens on Vista 32/64-bit, too. Even worse are extreme DPC spikes that happen whenever clock-rates are dynamically switched. Fortunately one can enforce a fixed performance level via RIVATUNER.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit
Number of services loaded: >70
Maxmimum available RAM: ~3400 out of 4070 mb
Maxmimum available RAM Aero + Defender + Superfetch deactivated: ~3600 out of 4070 mb
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Number of services loaded: >50
Maxmimum available RAM: ~3300-3370 out of 4070 mb
Maxmimum available RAM Aero + Defender + Superfetch deactivated: ~3450-3500 out of 4070 mb (starts at only ~3300 mb and takes exactly 5 mins until System releases another 150 mb).
Seemingly Windows 7 64-bit is using more memory for less services compared to Vista 64-bit on an otherwise equally configured system (same hardware, fresh installations with same drivers).

Hi Alex,
I'm fine with the space now in this new mode, obviously the old mode may not ever be fixed as it were but that's ok since I think now what it needs is a choice between displaying the icon irrespective of whether the task is "open" or not and at a similar width not for the sake of the words, as well not to move around and stay in the one set place would be nice I think.
Thank you

The buttons are larger so they are easier to use with a touch screen.

Thats a good thing, IF you have a touch screen yes. Glad to know this but I don't have one, and have a pretty accurate rodent that can hit the smallest of icons LOL. I would like the option to decide the padding between the icons please...

OK, on wide display it's maybe ok.. but what about us, notebook users? Thats why i love MacOS-X Dock, becouse the icons are arranged really close one to each other and if you are looking for some particular program, the icons went larger, if you want to... i know it will be tooo much "copy" but its just simple and sooo practical.
Btw i love pinig frequently used program to my tak bar, but whet we (you) are going to remove taskba icon, the small ones (notification icons....) i think with this kind of new task bar we don not need it any more!

Icones hidden in task bar
In the taskbar on the right i have some hidden icons if i try to expend with the divider it just springs back not allowing me.
The task bar is not locked btw, surely if they put a divider we must be able to move it.

Nero 8
To solve this I had to reinstall the old version and went through the same process but before rebooting I checked for the registry entry thet launches the installer after rebooting, copied the command and pasted it in a "update.cmd" file I created. I rebooted and launched the update.cmd with admin privileges and the process continued without any problems.
WMP seek bar doesn't work when opening videos through jump list.
I already sent feedback reporting it, but I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this.

MediaPlayer and Technisat Skystar 2 PCI Tv Card
2. I tried to install Technisat Skystar 2 PCI Tv Card driver which I used for Vista, It didn't work.
Best Regards.
Eset Nod32 Smart Security
No issues so far.
I think I may have to go back to Vista
Not sure W7 is ready for prime time.
My specs:
- Lian Li PC-V2100B
- Enermax Galaxy 1000watt PSU
- Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme
- Intel Core i7 965 3.2GHz Extreme Edition
running @ 4.0GHz - CoolerMaster V8
- 6GB OCZ DDR3 1600MHz
- 2 80GB Intel X25-M SSDs in RAID0
- 2 750GB Western Digital Caviar Blacks in RAID1
- WD SATAII 250GB w/16meg cache
- Plextor 716A SATA DLDVD Burner
- LiteOn BlueRay/DVD Rom
- nVidia 9600GT w/512MB GDDR3 running dual ACER 24" AL2416W widescreens
- DTV/DSL Internet connection at 10 meg per/sec down and 768K per/sec up
When running Vista that machine clips along nicely, as you may well imagine.
The main problems in W7:
- takes a quite a while to access the RAID1 storage drive if it's been parked. It always took a few seconds but it's a lot longer wait with W7
- Dual Screen support randomly goes away. Most times a re-start fixes it but sometimes not.
- LAN is dead when I wake the machine from sleep.
- This morning, the whole machine was dead and would not wake. I had to re-boot just to wake it.
- It just took almost 45 seconds to empty the Recycle Bin of 2.8GB of files!
- W7 seems to have trouble with passwords? I have to enter my user/pass every time I come to this board as well as others. But some boards I frequent are remembered and password works like it's supposed to. That happens with IE8 and FF3 both, which is why I think it's a W7 thing.
- No drivers for SM Bus Controller
Any insights on these problems?
I'm going to try the latest Vista x64 video driver from nVidia to see about the dual monitor support. That one is the MOST irritating because it can happen while I'm in the middle of something and leave me with no way to save my work.
Download Problem??
1. Spwizeng.dll is not designed to run on this windows or is corrupt.
2. Auto run.dll is corrupt or missing
as far as I can see, all files are on the DVD, have I got a bad download or another problem???

Recent Items link. Show desktop.
2. Show desktop button sits in the bottom right corner. This is very unergonomic. Have to drag the mouse all the way to the right which is a pain for right handed users. Of course, the keyboard shortcut of Win key + M is good but it does not give the transparent windows effect which is a classy feature.

I thought the same thing about desktop.scf on the right but now I think it's good after scrolling if that was the idea.
One thing I will say is it is a bit weird having these "pinned" icons on the taskbar being one size one second then changing the next, ie when opening a new program but when you minimise an application it still stays the same size, not so intuitive I don't think.
If you could change the size of the icons to be either big or small one way or the other this would be a great first step in my view towards easier working.
About recent items, I never used it, in the same way that I couldn't stand the massive long lists of endless garbage that programs created for themselves on the start menu.
Good work Microsoft, all good steps towards an iconic product.

vista/7
My first impressions is that 7 is a stripped down version of vista. I have not explored it all yet so I may be presuming to much. But with what I have seen I would prefer to keep my Vista ultimate. I know its a beta and will change before release but I think not including a mail program is a mistake. I know you can download one from windows live but people expect it to be there when they buy their machine.
The other thing I cannot find is the reliabilty monitor. This was an excellent tool in vista. If its is in 7 were is it.
Other than that it seems easy to install and set up. I like the gadgets removed from a sidebar but although its a change of op system visually it seems no different to vista and as I say I like vista and would probably keep it.
all the best
