Using AVG Free? Turn OFF LinkScanner for BIG speed boost!

Using AVG Free? Turn OFF LinkScanner for BIG speed boost!

For those cheap people out there (like me), who are using AVG Free Anti-virus with Windows 7, you will notice a BIG increase in browsing speed if you disable LinkScanner (Tools | Advanced | LinkScanner).  For some reason, doing this seems to have sped up everything in Windows 7 although I have no idea why.  Maybe it just seems that way, but browsing is CLEARLY faster.

Reply:
Well, of course browsing will be faster since that damn LinkScanner would take over your Http headers and scan the hell out of it!

So, I'm joining the fight,

Turn AVG Link Scanner OFF!

Help text during installation is still about Vista

I'm using the German Win7 beta.
Start the Installation.
First selecting the language, then continiue to the next Window.
In this Window with the big Button "Jetzt Installieren" (Install now) there is a Link named
"Wissenswertes vor der Windows Installation" ("Know before installing Windows")
Select this Link and a new Window from "Hilfe und Support" (Help and Support) came up.
The Help Text is about "Installing Windows Vista" and not translated.
The Window is small and not resizeable.

Windows 7 on Atom dual core

I installed this on an Intel Atom PC and it runs as well as XP on the same PC.

If MS doesn't bloat it up it will be what Vista should have been.

Win-7 and XP plus Raid-0

M$ needs to add in their requirements that Win-7/B needs a Vista machine to install. And that sucks as they're XP'ers who would like to test drive this newer, slicker, faster version. Forget vista, I've seen too many machines with vista and I'm not impressed in the least. After some work, win-7 loaded on raid-0, when it rebooted to finish the bsod showed hardware/software issues.  Reset/bootmgr/Old Version Windows and here's a new desktop icon.  "Windows 7 Beta Can Not Be Installed On A XP Machine".  This was with a clean install and the third attempt.  I build and repair machines on the side so I'm no dummy when it comes to making things work.  I've lowered all bios settings to base/default and the bsod still appears.  So much for this beta, another coaster please.

Memory, DPC and Wattage: comparison W7 vs Vista (vs XP)

Here is a simple and somewhat incomplete comparison of memory usage and DPC Latencies between Vista and Windows 7 (and some XP) running on a bootcamped Macbook Pro with 4gb RAM after installing all drivers and Service Pack updates:

Windows 7 32-bit

Number of service after startup: 58
Maximum available RAM: ~2600 out of 3046 mb

Vista Ultimate 32-bit

Number of services after startup: 70
Maximum available RAM: ~2600 out of 3046 mb

So while the number of services has decreased the memory usage seems to remain the same. Maybe some services have just been put together into one?!

Windows XP

Maximum available RAM: ~2800 out of 3046 mb

Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Maxmimum available RAM: ~3400 out of 4070 mb
Maxmimum available RAM Aero + Defender + Superfetch deactivated: ~3600 out of 4070 mb

Seemingly Vista 64-bit uses over 200 mb more RAM compared to its 32-bit cousin, but on the other side it offers 1000 mb more RAM to begin with. Aero (DWM.EXE), Windows Defender and Superfetch each use around 30-70 mb RAM (varrying by time).

You can win another 15 mb by turning off Search Indexing and another 20 mb by turning off Windows Audio, but given the practical usefulness of Windows Search I wouldn't turn it off for that minor amount.

Both Windows 7 and Vista draw the very same minimum wattage! I did not test wether Windows 7 draws less average wattage, but I seriously doubt that, since most of the power is drawn by the graphic-card and CPU and energy-saving is up to the graphic-card's and CPU drivers for that and don't really lie under Windows' control.

Both Windows 7 and Vista show the same DPC Latencies with properly written drivers! One exception is W7's Idle DPC Latencies for the older Broadcom WLAN drivers, which are substantially better on W7. But once these older driver become active (network traffic happening via WLAN) they are equally bad on W7 (including the ones shipping with W7) as on Vista. New drivers published via "Microsoft Update Catalog" completely solve that for Idle and Activity for on both W7 and Vista, which proves how important drivers are.

But I cannot deny that W7 improved the bad Idle behavior. Furthermore there is a difference between W7 32-bit, XP, Vista 32-bit and Vista 64-bit. W7 32-bit, XP and Vista 64-bit show no signs of DPC problems when the CPU is automatically clocked down via Speedstep while Vista 32-bit is negatively affected by this. This doesn't matter too much though, because under DAW load the CPU usually is clocked to higher rates anyway and thus Vista 32-bit is only partially affected. I did not test W7 64-bit yet.

(Apple's KBDMGR.EXE process has been killed on the following screenshots, because it produces constantly high DPC latencies.)

Windows 7 32-bit Idle DPC Latencies with NVidia drivers in 2D mode

The bad Idle DPC behavior of NVidia's drivers for 9600M GT are not a problem of W7, it happens on Vista 32/64-bit, too. Even worse are extreme DPC spikes that happen whenever clock-rates are dynamically switched. Fortunately one can enforce a fixed performance level via RIVATUNER.

Here is a comparison between Vista 64-bit versus Windows 7 64-bit:

Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Number of services loaded: >70
Maxmimum available RAM: ~3400 out of 4070 mb
Maxmimum available RAM Aero + Defender + Superfetch deactivated: ~3600 out of 4070 mb

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Number of services loaded: >50
Maxmimum available RAM: ~3300-3370 out of 4070 mb
Maxmimum available RAM Aero + Defender + Superfetch deactivated: ~3450-3500 out of 4070 mb (starts at only ~3300 mb and takes exactly 5 mins until System releases another 150 mb).

Seemingly Windows 7 64-bit is using more memory for less services compared to Vista 64-bit on an otherwise equally configured system (same hardware, fresh installations with same drivers).

hmm this is really interesting. but i did notice that W7 runs less processes compared to vista..but when i had vista my laptop would idle with 99 processes 52% physical ram used.whilst in W7 it idles with 71 processes and 34% physical ram used.

(ps..i have all the same exact software installed in W7 and Vista.)

but as for battery life...i have only noticed at the most 20 mins more battery life.

Windows Se7en Touch (2)

I am using an ELO Entuitive touch screen and so far have found the the touch features shown on the Windows Se7en site videos do not work. One of the improvements that I was most looking forward to in Se7en was the touch interfaces.

Any assistance welcome or your experiences of the touch interfaces greatly appreciated.

mercenaries 2 world in flames

I installed mercenaries 2 world in flames and the graphics seem to run better than they did on windows xp, however the badguys are now mindless drones, for the most part they just stand there and wait for you to kill them...  the second mission, where you have to take over the villa, went from being a slight challange and nearly impossable for my 7yr old to being a walk in the park for my 7yr old.  there is one major diffrence in windows vertions here othere tha its xp pro vs win7 and thats i have a 64 bit prossessor so i downloaded the 64 vertion instead of the 32 and my windows pro i assume is 32...  also i have installed the vista drivers for my video card but not my motherboard as of yet so that may have some bareing, but in the device manager nothing has a yellow ! next to it so i would think i wouldn't have to.  also i've noticed that my tv flickers up and down evin after installing the correct video driver so i can no longer play the game on the tv least wize not wile running in windows 7 mode....  well enyway just some notes of things to wach out for....

Hey, it has spellcheck!

At least it does after you install Live Mail. I usually install Office just to get spellcheck in Outlook Express. And with the improved Wordpad, I really don't need Word. Too bad Media Player uses so much more of my CPU than VLC does. And IE is still not as efficient as FF. I suppose with a better PC (mine is only rated 3) you could make do going totally MS.

spacing between icons on task bar is too much...

New task bar has its pluses and minuses.  A minus is the amount of space allowed between each icon.  Is there anyway to decrease the space on there so it can hold more icons???

Reply:
The space only looks big because they are sitting on buttons which need to "light up".

Have you tried to use Small Icons?

Hi Alex,

I'm fine with the space now in this new mode, obviously the old mode may not ever be fixed as it were but that's ok since I think now what it needs is a choice between displaying the icon irrespective of whether the task is "open" or not and at a similar width not for the sake of the words, as well not to move around and stay in the one set place would be nice I think.

Thank you

Alex, I concur with Bob.  I need an option to turn off the extra padding, at the very minimum for the pinned icons.   I tried small icons, and it still takes up waaaay too much space.   I could see needing this on a tablet, but im not using one.

Hi there, yes have tried the small icons but still the spacing is too much.  If there is an option to make the spacing suit the user that would be a benefit to the O/S for sure in my humble opinion...

------------------------------------
Reply:
I agree if it was not using small icons. But with small icons, it looks better. Large icons is horrible, esp if you are using classic theme !! also instead of opening a new box for notification icons, it would be better with the old fashion expanding side ways..

------------------------------------
Reply:
The only way to make the icons LOOK closer (they are already nearly touching) is to shave down the width of the buttons the graphic sits on. But then it would be harder to tell whether they are "lit up". Get it?

Something could be done but seriously, if you have a wide-screen monitor there is no issue.

The buttons are larger so they are easier to use with a touch screen.

Thats a good thing, IF you have a touch screen yes.  Glad to know this but I don't have one, and have a pretty accurate rodent that can hit the smallest of icons LOL.  I would like the option to decide the padding between the icons please...

Reply:

OK, on wide display it's maybe ok.. but what about us, notebook users? Thats why i love MacOS-X Dock, becouse the icons are arranged really close one to each other and if you are looking for some particular program, the icons went larger, if you want to... i know it will be tooo much "copy" but its just simple and sooo practical.

Btw i love pinig frequently used program to my tak bar, but whet we (you) are going to remove taskba icon, the small ones (notification icons....) i think with this kind of new task bar we don not need it any more!

Icones hidden in task bar

Hi all.

In the taskbar on the right i have some hidden icons if i try to expend with the divider it just springs back not allowing me.
The task bar is not locked btw, surely if they put a divider we must be able to move it.

Nero 8

Nero 8 installed without any issues but had a problem with updating. For updating the software tells you that first needs to uninstall the old version, then will reboot and continue installation. I accepted and Nero 8 was removed but upon rebooting the installer did not continue, and no trace of old version..

To solve this I had to reinstall the old version and went through the same process but before rebooting I checked for the registry entry thet launches the installer after rebooting, copied the command and pasted it in a "update.cmd" file I created. I rebooted and launched the update.cmd with admin privileges and the process continued without any problems.

WMP seek bar doesn't work when opening videos through jump list.

As the title says, when I open a video through the "Frequent" section of the WMP jump list, the seek bar refuses to work.

I already sent feedback reporting it, but I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this.

MediaPlayer and Technisat Skystar 2 PCI Tv Card

1.I have avi file and a srt subtitle file. They have the same name and they are in the same folder. I turned on the subtitle option from the Media Player. However it doesn't show subtitles.  I set up vobsub and no use. I cleaned it and setup k-lite codec pacak which has vobsub in it and again couldn't solve. I set up Gom Player and It worked. In Vista I had no problems with mediaplayer.

2. I tried to install Technisat Skystar 2 PCI Tv Card driver which I used for Vista, It didn't work.

Best Regards.

Eset Nod32 Smart Security

I succesfuly installed Eset Nod32 Smart Security in a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows 7 clean install.
No issues so far.

I think I may have to go back to Vista

Not sure W7 is ready for prime time.

My specs:

  • Lian Li PC-V2100B
  • Enermax Galaxy 1000watt PSU
  • Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme
  • Intel Core i7 965 3.2GHz Extreme Edition
    running @ 4.0GHz
  • CoolerMaster V8
  • 6GB OCZ DDR3 1600MHz
  • 2 80GB Intel X25-M SSDs in RAID0
  • 2 750GB Western Digital Caviar Blacks in RAID1
  • WD SATAII 250GB w/16meg cache
  • Plextor 716A SATA DLDVD Burner
  • LiteOn BlueRay/DVD Rom
  • nVidia 9600GT w/512MB GDDR3 running dual ACER 24" AL2416W widescreens
  • DTV/DSL Internet connection at 10 meg per/sec down and 768K per/sec up

When running Vista that machine clips along nicely, as you may well imagine.

The main problems in W7:

  • takes a quite a while to access the RAID1 storage drive if it's been parked. It always took a few seconds but it's a lot longer wait with W7
  • Dual Screen support randomly goes away. Most times a re-start fixes it but sometimes not.
  • LAN is dead when I wake the machine from sleep.
  • This morning, the whole machine was dead and would not wake. I had to re-boot just to wake it.
  • It just took almost 45 seconds to empty the Recycle Bin of 2.8GB of files!
  • W7 seems to have trouble with passwords? I have to enter my user/pass every time I come to this board as well as others. But some boards I frequent are remembered and password works like it's supposed to. That happens with IE8 and FF3 both, which is why I think it's a W7 thing.
  • No drivers for SM Bus Controller

Any insights on these problems?

I'm going to try the latest Vista x64 video driver from nVidia to see about the dual monitor support. That one is the MOST irritating because it can happen while I'm in the middle of something and leave me with no way to save my work.

Download Problem??

Ive downloaded Win7, although the file I have is a .DLM file, Ive managed to burn it to a disk and can see all files including setup on the disk, however, when I try to run setup i get 2 errors and cant get any further.

1. Spwizeng.dll is not designed to run on this windows or is corrupt.

2. Auto run.dll is corrupt or missing

as far as I can see, all files are on the DVD, have I got a bad download or another problem???

Im not sure if its exactly the same problem you had but the first time i downloaded the file and tried installing it got about halfway through unpacking the files in the install and told me a file was missing/corrupt (no names though).  I redownloaded and the new download worked fine so I'd give that a try.  Hope it works!

I think, You didn't finish the download. Windows 7 is available in ISO image format. .DLM file is the file that would have converted to ISO image, after 100% complete downloading.

Recent Items link. Show desktop.

1. Win7 is grouping all the recently opened or created items under the application which shows up in the Start menu. But the link of Recent Items was rather handy as it listed everything at one place. Also easy to clear them with a right click on it as in Vista.

2. Show desktop button sits in the bottom right corner. This is very unergonomic. Have to drag the mouse all the way to the right which is a pain for right handed users. Of course, the keyboard shortcut of Win key + M is good but it does not give the transparent windows effect which is a classy feature.

Reply:

I thought the same thing about desktop.scf on the right but now I think it's good after scrolling if that was the idea.

One thing I will say is it is a bit weird having these "pinned" icons on the taskbar being one size one second then changing the next, ie when opening a new program but when you minimise an application it still stays the same size, not so intuitive I don't think.

If you could change the size of the icons to be either big or small one way or the other this would be a great first step in my view towards easier working.

About recent items, I never used it, in the same way that I couldn't stand the massive long lists of endless garbage that programs created for themselves on the start menu.

Good work Microsoft, all good steps towards an iconic product.

vista/7

hi
My first impressions is that 7 is a stripped down version of vista. I have not explored it all yet so I may be presuming to much. But with what I have seen I would prefer to keep my Vista ultimate. I know its a beta and will change before release but I think not including a mail program is a mistake. I know you can download one from windows live but people expect it to be there when they buy their machine.
The other thing I cannot find is the reliabilty monitor. This was an excellent tool in vista. If its is in 7 were is it.
Other than that it seems easy to install and set up. I like the gadgets removed from a sidebar but although its a change of op system visually it seems no different to vista and as I say I like vista and would probably keep it.
all the best
