Learning Manager Happenings
I am the lead program manager for Learning Manager platform. I hope to be on this forum regularly to get feedback from our customers and notify you on things that are happening on Learning Manager.
I am sorry to say that we are currently working through some performance issues that may be causing some errors. I apologize for any inconvenience. We are trying our best to resolve this issue ASAP. I ask for your patience.
On a happier note, we have made some updates to the site that should improve overall search experience and we have also enabled localization for full 15 languages.
We have more improvements coming and I will post about them here in the near future.
Thank you,
Rich Choi

They make logging back into the forums a SNAP and support multiple Windows Live accounts.
This would be A GREAT improvement over the current code that can't seem to remember you between browser sessions and has caused me and others to have to delete our cookies, just to get back on the site.

DTS Conversion Tool - DTS xChange
Hi all, about a year ago we started development of a tool to migrate DTS packages to SSIS and profile the effort. We're pleased to announce that it launched yesterday. It also applies a series of rules to your DTS packages as it converts like turning on logging or checkpoints.
You can see more information and download a trial here:
Reply:
Hi Brian,
I reviewed DTS xChange in one of your conversion demos today. Your product converted one of my pacakges in about 52 seconds. This package would have taken me 1.5 days to rewrite. However, the real interesting value in your product is not just conversion of DTS to SSIS, but it improves SSIS by adding best practices to the final SSIS structure, including configurable event handling and reporting capabilities.
Nice job and congrats on the Microsoft recommendation.

"Completing Upgrade" hang on new box with Premium SP1
Just got a new Core2 Quad machine pre-installed with Home Premium. I tried upgrade to Ultimate SP1 (full version, fresh from the Company Store), receiving the message that the Upgrade option would not be available until I installed SP1. No problem, I did so and the machine, as expected, still worked fine. I then kicked off the upgrade, which hung at "Completing Upgrade".
Thoughts? I'm confident that this isn't a hardware, driver, or BIOS issue for Vista, as in some of the previous "Completing Installation" threads, as I was already running Home Premium SP1.
Thanks.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for posting here!
Jeff, I'd like to confirm if the upgrade has been completed. If not, please help me to collect the log file for further research:
1. Open a command prompt.
2. In the command prompt, type in the following command and press Enter after each:
Copy C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log C:\
Copy C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log C:\
3. After reboot the computer and enter the previous Windows Vista, go to C:\ and send the setupact.log and setuperr.log as attachments to me. You can send it to my v- email account.

SQL Server 2005 Data Mining Add-Ins for Office 2007 Released (Updated)
The SQL Server 2005 Data Mining Add-Ins for Office 2007 package has been released to the web with SQL Server 2005 SP2 as a free download. The package is available in ten languages and includes the following three add-ins:
- Table Analysis Tools for Excel – Allows you to analyze your spreadsheet data in powerful ways with just a few mouse clicks, by employing SQL Server Data Mining behind the scenes.
- Data Mining Client for Excel – Enables you to go through the entire lifecycle of a data mining project, including preparing data, building, evaluating and managing mining models, and predicting results using either spreadsheet data or external data accessible through your Analysis Services database.
- Data Mining Templates for Visio – Enables you to render, annotate and share your mining model patterns as Visio diagrams with colleagues and decision-makers in your company.
Here's the download page link again: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=82754.
Enjoy!
UPDATE: If you downloaded the add-ins prior to March 22, 2007, the download page above now has an updated version that fixes performance issues in the Data Mining Client add-in for Excel in model querying, data exploration (column selection wizard page) and scatter plot rendering. This update also resolves errors seen in the DM Client Forecast task and Analyze Key Influencers when running against Analysis Services 2005 Standard Edition.
(Note: Standard Edition users will also need to install SP2 and then apply the SP2 Cumulative Hotfix 3154.)
Reply:
Thanxs for the performance fixes!
I was using the Data Mining Add-ins during one of my demos, and noticed it was taking quite some time to perform the analysis. At first, I thought it was a problem with my laptop configuration (limited memory, slow CPU). Now, it is performing much better.

Microsoft Architecture Journal Issue 16 - Call For Papers
The next issue of the Architecture Journal will be focused on Identity Architectures. As more organizations embrace a services based infrastructure, the need to manage the identities of users in an organization becomes more and more important. Issues that have been easy to manage in traditional environments need now to be considered from the perspective of services moving to the "cloud".
This can include fundamental issues that you may even be facing now, such as internal authorization strategies; not only for employees, but how do you include partners and customers? More complex issues may include tiered access; what data is relevant to each user or user group? How do you secure that data? Is all identity data relevant in any circumstance or does it depend on the role of the user at any given time? How do directories compare to claims based authentication? What happens with multipart, distributed transactions? What about auditing in various contexts?
If you have opinions that you would like to share with the architect community on identity management, here is your chance! Follow the instructions below to send an abstract before the cut-off date and you could see your thoughts and ideas shared with over 60,000 readers, translated in 5 languages, and distributed at multiple conferences around the world!
The cut-off date for abstracts for the next issue is April 21st 2008. If you are interested in making a submission, here are the details:
How do I make a submission?
To submit an idea for a paper, please send the following:
- A 2 – 4 paragraph abstract explaining how your paper fits the "Identity Architectures" theme of the magazine
- A 1 – 2 paragraph bio
- A list of previously published articles
Submissions should be made via Email to editors@architecturejournal.net
We receive many submissions for each issue, so we encourage you to put time and thought into the submission.
When will I know whether my submission is accepted?
After the call for papers has ended, you will be notified via Email as to whether your submission was successful or not.
What happens if my submission is accepted?
If accepted, you'll have between 6 weeks to submit two drafts and a final version of your paper. These dates will be clearly communicated. Your first draft will be reviewed by an editorial board to ensure it is on message for the magazine. Your second draft and final version will be subject to both technical and copy editing.
The magazine is generally available in print and online 4 weeks after final drafts are submitted.
What are the guidelines for papers printed in the Architecture Journal?
We recommend that papers are between 3,500 and 4,500 words in length – although we have accepted shorter and longer papers in the past. The article should be submitted using Microsoft Word. Diagrams should be submitted in either Microsoft Visio or Microsoft PowerPoint, and will be reformatted for the magazine.
Do I still own the work?
Yes. We ask you to sign a release form that gives Microsoft permission to reprint the article, but ownership of the paper remains with you, the author.
Will I get paid for writing?
We do not currently reimburse authors for contributing to the Architecture Journal.
Will I get copies of the magazine as an author?
After printing you'll be sent 10 copies of the Journal for your own use. Additional copies can be requested.
Where can I get more information?

I agree. The tab order should be changed so that when one tabs from the subject line, the tab goes to the message body first, and then to the toolbar, so folks without keyboards can still use those features.

Visual studio crashes while generating Report Model
I could never guess that this could be an issue. All the time I was trying to figure out if there was anything wrong with the data in my tables.
So, for me, a simple solution worked - check-out the .dsv file before you start creating data model. I hope this may save time for others...
Wits end on updates - Why are they not deploying?
This is my third install of SCE.
Server 2003 R2 SP2 (tried on server 2003 standard too)
3.2 Ghz
2GB RAM
Test Domain (isolated from the internet except to get MS updates after SCE setup)
Local SQL
Mix of VMware and physical machines.
The problem:
Just like the other install's I've done: the agent installs to the computer and detects updates. Update approval is set correctly and the SCE policies are being applied. I've run wuauclt /detectnow many times - gpupdate /force too. WSUS 2.0 worked so simply so I know there must be some little thing I am missing. What is it!
The SCE Overview page says that install is incomplete but the reason given is that I haven't upgraded to the full version. This makes sense since I have not purchased it yet. This is a fully functioning eval right? The eval is the latest SCE SP1, downloaded last week. Previous versions tried were pre-SP1.
I get no yellow shield yet System Properties --Automatic updates is grayed out with my policy settings just like it should be.
I am lost for now so any help would be great.

If no one has a similar issue does someone from the SCE team have any suggestions?

The following are some general troubleshooting steps for your reference
Make sure the group policy has been applied to problematic clents, check the firewall and proxy setting for the problematic client.
If you wish to return to this question you can go ahead and change the type back to 'Question'. Then you can edit your initial post and change the radio button at the top of the post editor window.

Lots of Questions Going Unanswered Here
Would be nice to see Microsoft stepping up here.
Reply:
Microsoft forums and newsgroups rely on the volunteer work of hundreds of people like you and me. We're answering questions as fast as possible and it's for free. Most people answering questions are not employed by Microsoft.
If anyone needs help with planning a migration or anything else that's too difficult there's always the possibility to open a case with Microsoft, or get a consultant to help out.
The lack of information in many questions also make it impossible to answer and I don't think a successful domain migration is planned in a forum unfortunately.
My 2 cents.

Hierarchies visible when browsing dimension, but not from cube
I solved this problem while writing the question, but as others might face this problem I'll post it here:
PROBLEM
I have a dimension with 3 user hierarchies and 2 attribute hierarchies, and i can see all of them when browsing the dimension in SQL management studio or in BIDS. However, when I check the dimension when browsing the cube I only see 2 user hierarchies and 1 attribute hierarchy. AttributeHierarchyEnabled = True and also AttributeHierarchyVisible = True for those two attributes, but still only 1 of them show up in the cube browser.
I've had this problem before and then I solved it by re-creating the dimension from scratch and then assigning it to the cube again (dimension usage).
SOLUTION
Seems like you can modify how the cube sees/uses the dimensions separately per cube. This can be done both on user hierarchy level and attribute level (like in the normal dimension editor) in the dimension window below the measures when viewing the cube structure in BIDS. So if you create a dimension with some attributes and set them to AttributeHierarchyEnabled = False, add them to a cube, and then modify AttributeHierarchyEnabled = True, that cube will still have AttributeHierarchyEnabled = False on those attributes as the changes in the dimension does not seem to propagate down to the cube.
Has anyone seen any naming conventions for dimensions or dimension hierarchies btw?
Thanks!

Hmm.. I was googling and searching thru the forum, but somehow I did not find your thread.
As expected you cannot set a "higher visibility" on the dimension attributes or hierarchies in the dimension window in the cube structure editor than the settings in the actual dimension (Cannot enable the attribute hierarchy of the cube attribute because it's disabled on the source dimension attribute 'Customer'.)

We can only do this however based on all your feedback, so thank you very much for it all. Please keep it up, we are very committed to making this the best forums application out there for both users and moderators.
I know it may also be frustrating to wait for several months for some of the suggestions to make it's way in but I think we'll be able to pick up the pace once we're done with migrating the current forums system over. There are a lot of features we're building that aren't seen externally like reporting, before we can migrate the old forums over.

Forum Update is Live
In February we released the new Microsoft forums platform with the Expression Forums, as well as a handful of new forums on the MSDN, TechNet and general Microsoft forum sites. To-date there have been over 10K posts by almost 3K users. We faced some initial challenges in the area of performance and quickly deployed two small releases with a number of fixes to address these issues. Speed and reliability were improved considerably.
We've been listening to your feedback in the bugs and suggestions forums, and have been working on incorporating much of the feedback into the next major release of the forums. This release will go live in the next week or two, after final testing is complete. In addition to fixing hundreds of bugs, including many submitted by the community, it will highlight the following areas:
Performance and reliability: A new lighter weight editor to reduce the time it takes to create or reply to a post. Bug fixes to reduce the number of 500 errors users are experiencing.
Usability: A new filter called "Unread", which displays any thread which has new posts added since your last visit. This allows you to see which threads you've never read (bold), as well as threads you've read that have new replies.
Discoverability: The ability to expand or collapse forum category headers. Clickable category headers for a page with just those forums. More links for Top Answerers and Recent Users show the full community taking part in each forum.
Moderator's: Split one thread in to two, or take two similar threads and merge them in to one. Change a discussion to a question or a question to a discussion. Make a thread sticky more easily.
Thanks
-Andrew

In fact I haven't seen many other forum systems do this, they usually have a "New since I last logged in" but if I don't read them all and log in a second time I've lost what I didn't read.
I really like the new editor we're using and the bugs we've fixed like the one about stripping whitespace when adding code.
I'm real excited to get this out and get feedback on it.
In the meantime we're now working on our next release with yet more bugs fixed and suggestions taken. One of the things we're fixing is the ability to search a single forum, or a category of forums (today you can only search "All Forums") also in the resulting thread list when you do a search you'll also see the Forum name that the thread belongs to.
So stay tuned...

- How is the performance you experience on the site today?
- If you could make one more change to the forums, what would it be?
- Is there anything on the old forums you miss on the new platform?
What's next?
Over the coming weeks we'll start working on the next update to forums. Our focus for the next release, in addition to responding to your feedback (many of your suggestions are already being incorporated), is to make it possible to migrate forums from the old platform to the new. That means being able to bring content, profiles, and points over on a per forum basis, and leaving forum and thread redirects in place, so all links point to the new location of the forum once it's been brought over.
Expect another update like this one in about a month with details on when the next release will be available and what's included. We'll begin migrating a few carefully selected forums after this next release, and they'll be announcements in the forum a week before to let you know what to expect.
If you have feedback about the release or the move to the new forums, please let us know. You can post your feedback in the suggestions forum.
Thanks
