Off Topic Posts/Questions
I suspect the search function is displaying the Microsoft Online Services forums for a variety of search criteria, and the names of some of these forums are so generic that people post here without realizing these are Microsoft Online Services specific. Perhaps we could change the names of the forums so they all contain some form of Microsoft Online Services?
I suspect it would keep the posts more on-topic and make it easier for people with Microsoft Online Services discussion items to find these forums.

How I got Vista to show computers in all workgroups and domains...
Just figured out how to get Vista to properly show me all the computers in all the workgroups and the domain on my network. I'm running Vista Business x64 SP1 in my own little workgroup called Fortress. There is a domain here, as well as the inevitable MSHOME and Workgroup workgroups (usually people's laptops). I've gone from not being able to see any other computers, to being able to see the other workgroups but not the domain, to finally seeing all of them.
Here are the steps I took, please note it's possible some are irrelevant but I figured I'd mention them all:
1) Fix Computer Browser service. Computer Browser service may not start in Vista, despite being set to Automatic. I fixed this by setting RPC Locator service to automatic and rebooting. Computer Browser now starts happily. (*edit* ...or not. This doesn't always work, if it doesn't check out workaround here)
2) Add Firewall Exceptions. In Windows Firewall settings, I went to the Exceptions tab. Seemed like a lot of Microsoft stuff was listed but not checked as an exception. I checked everything MS related (I'll go back through and trim it back down after, if I figure out specific exceptions that need to be allowed then I'll post here later).
3) Access a Domain Share. At this point I could see the other workgroups but still nothing from the domain. To test connectivity/authentication with the domain, I popped open a Windows Explorer and typed in a share on the domain (\\someserver\someshare$). I happened to use a share I had the credentials saved for already, but normally (i.e. for you) the authentication window will come up asking for domain credentials. Enter a valid domain user/pass with access to the share.
4) See All Computers! Apparently accessing the share authenticates you on the domain and allows you to see the domain computers/devices. Hop back to Windows Explorer and look in Network (refresh if necessary). Domain computers should now show up.
Anyway this is what worked for me so I figured I'd share it here. Good luck and happy Vistaing.

disabling scanning of the floppy drive
I'm currently testing the System Center on a few Dell Optiplex GX620 and I noticed that everytime System Center scans the computers, it will make the floppy drive seek.
Is there anyway for System Center not to scan for the floppy drive?
Thanks

Vista Wireless Problem
Hi all,
Lately i deploy a DELL's pc with window Vista Ultimate, this pc need to run LAN and Wireless LAN at the same time.
But once LAN is Enable, the WLAN will going down. If i disable the LAN, the WLAN will back to normal.
The wireless adapter that i use is Level 1 and 3Com. Both having the same problem.

Hi ElvinPlus,
Before we go further, I would like to confirm the following information with you:
1. Why do you need to use the wired and wireless connection at the same time?
2. What do you mean by "go down"? Does the wireless connection automatically disconnect after enabling the wired connection? Or you just find that the computer cannot access the network through the wireless connection?
Meanwhile, please reproduce the issue and collect the following information for further research:
1. Windows IP Configuration by using the command ipconfig /all.
2. Router Table by using the command route print.
I look forward to your reply.

network connections and vista
I bought a laptop which has Vista software.
I have difficulty at times connecting to my network intermittently. At times it will work perfectly and automatically connect to the network and at others won't recognize it. Sometimes the network strength is excellent and yet it still will not connect.
I can shutdown and reboot but this may not work. Any suggestions anyone? It is quite frustrating.

Hi shooty,
I would like to confirm if the issue being encountered is that you cannot connect to the wireless Router although the signal strength is excellent. Would you capture the error message for further research?
If it is possible, please reset the wireless Router to check the result.

1. I logon to microsoftelearning.com and I get to see MyEleaning and I get to see the list of courses I've bought access to.
2. I click on a course (in this case couse 5246) and I get to see the a page with the description of the course. But... at this point I'm all of a sudden NOT logged in any longer. I can see that, because there's a button with the text Login, and allso there's a text suggesting me to buy this course (that I have bought).
My conclusion on this is: My credentials (wether I'm logged in or not) are not "transferred" through state from MyElearning to the courses main details page.
I'ts a sad situation for me, that I cannot get access to the course I've paid money for to access: Tomorrow I won't be able to participate in a planned study group meeting :-( I hope that I get some sort of refund or compensation for not being able to use the product I've bought???

Joergen

I am a new customer that bought Collection 2555 on April 3:rd (last Thursday). Issue described above have been existing for me since the time of my purchase; in other words I've not yet been able to access product that I bought for almost five days ago. I'm sorry, but I have to say that I am deeply dissapointed in how slow this issue is being resolved and over the lack of information. If I didn't stumble over this forum by pure coincedence, I would still wonder if the problem was caused on my end or Microsoft's.
I would appreciate if someone from Microsoft could post information about estimated resolution time for this problem. Also, what is Microsoft's policy for time-restricted purchases (my access to the course I've bought is limited to 180 days, if I remember correctly) when product is not available for extended time period due to Microsoft's technical problems?

Feedback about February CTP of Management Studio
Some things that struck me as I used a CTP of this for the first time...
Query window: When I right click on a term underlined with red squiggley line, I expect context sensitive assistance to resolve.
Query window: When I type "FROM " and drag a table onto the line, it appends the table name. Great. When I drag another table onto the line, I want it to append ", Table2", instead, they are concatenated together with no separation! Ugh.
Executing a Query Window Query: I miss the feedback of the increasing row count while executing at the bottom of the pane.

Chart series label font size in 2008 bug

Right now I'm just messing around in the report designer. I haven't done any research to see if this affects other chart types or even if it behaves the same way when the report server.

Note: In case you want to get the latest RC2 refresh build 5508 you'll have to download and execute "Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2.exe" on a test machine and run Windows Update afterwards. Build 5508 is (officially) available via Windows Update only and not as a standalone file. The other three 300+ MB files listed in DownloadCenter are containing build 3311 which is -ehm- somewhat outdated right now.

Single Table Structured Dynamic Relational Database
Sharepoint is a pretty darn dynamic service and that got me thinking of how databases are created.
Just wondering out loud, surely someone has thought of creating databases in such a manner, but I don't know if it's a thought that has been struck down.
It would look something like this:
Single Table
ID uniqueidentifier PK
ParentID uniqueidentifier FK to ID
Name nvarchar(MAX)
Value nvarchar(MAX)
In this manner, you would create your database "columns" as needed in the data-layer.
If that is too strict, (every datatype would be encoded to base64), you could create a value option for basically every data type. EG. nvarchar(max), nvarbinary(max).... and add another field that describes the data-type to be used for that "column"
ID uniqueidentifier PK
ParentID uniqueidentifier FK to ID
Name nvarchar(MAX)
DataType nvarchar(50) //constrained to allowable datatypes
MaxLen nvarchar(31) //ahh, what the hey, let's add this for sniggles.
ValueNvarchar nvarchar(MAX) nullable
ValueNvarbin nvarbinary(MAX) nullable
....
Now, to allow the "values" for those "columns", you may be able to still use the single-table approach, but it may be better to have an extra table for that (probably even a different partition and drive).
Things to consider, indexing.....
In development, the data-layer would handle the creation/reading of table columns.
The business-layer, which could be many for different parts of a company, would make it's requests to the DL. It may need a username, and the DL would either just create it, or suggest an already existing username column. The path to that username may not be where a particular biz element wants it, so they will ask the DL create another under a diff path.
The business-layer is probably the most important reason for wanting a single dynamic table.
In the end, the relation structure could be like:
Human //dir, no value, no parent (root)
FirstName //value - text
LastName //value - text
Parent1 //value - Me Id
Sibling1 //value - Me Id
SiblingN //value - Me Id
School //dir, no val
ParentId //value - Id (perhaps category would be Building)
Name //value - text
The sibling N would be an example of how a table may need to be dynamic. A positive of the single-table approach is no limitation on number of "columns". Another is the ease to move a hierarchical structure if needed. School may want to be University instead of just "school" and be placed as a child of "school".
Looking for any thoughts on the subject,
Nathan
Reply:
I understand that, but I was looking at the logistical standpoint of creating a database in a single table hierarchical manner.
Instead of creating a field EmployeeID in the table as a field, I'm looking to make it a "virtual field".
So if I were to use SQL Server 2008, I'd probably make the table as such:
FieldHierId HierarchyID
FieldId uniqueidentifier
FieldName....
FieldValue....
So the question is not about how to do a single table structure or how to do a hierarchy, but rather "could/should it be done".
Nathan

windows explore stopped working
I see that you are getting the message i was getting saying windows explore stopped working. The cause of the issue might be due to various reasons
I recommend you to download and install SP1 this should work for everybody but is not 100% that is going to work for every single one of you out there
Windows Vista SP1
includes improvements many of the most common reasons for which windows stops responding
Windows Vista SP1 includes many changes that can improve your computer's speed and performance. Here are some of the areas that are improved:
| • | Faster copying or extracting files from a compressed mode. |
| • | Better use of network bandwidth when browsing file shares over a network. |
| • | Improved performance from Windows ReadyBoost in reducing the time it takes for Windows to wake up from Hibernate and Standby power modes. |
| • | Better power consumption when your computer screen is idle for a long time. |
| • | Improved logon experience when using a corporate computer, such as a laptop, outside of the corporate network. |
| • | Faster opening of large image files. |

Improvements in security
You can now use BitLocker to encrypt multiple partitions on your computer's hard disk, rather than just a single partition. Note that BitLocker is only available in Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Ultimate
SP1 includes an important change to the way desktop search works in Windows Vista. You can now select a default desktop search service, similar to the way you can select a default search service for web browsers and media players. With SP1, you can now get to your preferred search results from within the Start menu and Windows Explorer
Changes in memory (RAM) reporting
SP1 also changes how the random access memory (RAM) that is installed in your computer is reported. Before SP1, the amount of memory reported was equal to the amount of memory that Windows was able to use. In SP1, the amount of memory reported is the amount of memory that is actually installed on your computer. If you have 4 gigabytes (GB) of memory installed, you'll now see 4 GB of memory reported by features such as System or Performance Information and Tools in Control Panel. This change can only happen if your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) is capable of displaying that much RAM
