another searching files problem
I loved the find files or folders interface of win 95 and win 98. It was quick, clean, simple etc. The sidebar in XP I detested at first because I liked the old way but I learned to live with it because the basic functionality was there. Vista the functionality is there, but it's waaaay too many clicks to get to it from a windows explorer view.
For me speed of results was never a key factor, I rarely wanted to search within contents of files, but I do often want to add columns to the results list. In Vista when I do that it appears to reset the search, which starts again - a pain if I want to add columns dependant on the results I find.
I'm not going to pretend I know loads about the indexing service in Vista - all I know is that my machine was running slowly before I turned it off. - It shouldn't have got to that stage. Indexing every word in every document (at least in specified folders) is a feature that I no doubt some users would find useful, although in the extreme cases when I would have to resort to that I don't mind having to wait a while, but it should be possible, without a serious impact to performance, and it is possible for this search to come back with results instantly (or in the ms range) - there are enterprise products out there that do this very thing. IMHO Microsoft risks ending up with a large portion of users installing other companies software (who shall remain nameless) to get the same job done - just because it works better. Don't get me wrong I'm a much bigger fan of Microsoft than those other nameless companies (how many jobs have MS created VS those other nameless companies), anyway I'm getting off point.
Initial looks at the search features in 7 were dissapointing - it's the same number of clicks away and the advanced search features (most searches I perform will be for things with date modified / size greater than etc) are even more hidden (i.e. you have to know the search commands for them) this is a huge pain. My ideal search interface would go back to something along the lines of the windows 95/98 one, perhaps with similar functionality to the find in ADUC, where additional search 'terms' can be added to a single search to narrow down results. (think filter functionality like in sysinternals procmon).
Anyway other thing I thought I'd mention is it would be nice to have better integration of additional drives in the my documents folder. I've lost count of the number of people who've complained about running out of space when they have entire drives unused. Although not entirely sure how this would be implmented.

Problems WSUS - Replica Groups
1 WSUS server in the central (W1)
1 WSUS server in sucursal (W2)
In W1 have created several groups of computers and distributed on the LAN computers correctly.
The problem arises with computers W2.
We have created a group in the W2 and W1 from W2 teams have moved the sucursal to this group. Since W2 are grouped in this group but I see only the W1 in unallocated teams and can not move.
How should I do?. thanks.

Honestly, Frank, I'm still trying to decipher your original post.
I understand you have two WSUS Servers, one in the central office and one "in sucursal" -- unfortunately, "sucursal" does not translate.
You've created several groups on the central office server, and your problem, apparently, exists with the computers assigned to use the W2 server.
You've created a group "in the W2" -- do you mean at the W2 server, or in the domain encompassing that W2 group? And, it's at this point where I lose the ability to follow your post.
One key question I know we'll need the answer to, as it pertains to anythign involving groups amongst multiple WSUS servers:
Is W2 a replica server, an autonomous downstream server, or an autonomous primary server?
e.g. does W2 synchronize with the central server, or with Microsoft directly?; is it a replica, or a standalone?

Eric, my post above is not an answer -- and should not be marked as one. This poster's query is unanswerable without further information. If this poster is not going to respond back with the necessary additional information, perhaps the better solution is to mark the thread as a Comment? -- not to mark posts as Answers that have absolutely no information about the problem at all. Heck, I didn't even post a suggested resolution in that post!

Conversion of Exchange and SQL servers
Just trying to figure out the best process on migrating production SQL 2005 and Exchange 2003 servers that are not in cluster. There is a slight twist in that I would like to clean up the newly converted servers before I bring them online. There are several things I want to do like remove Openmanage, Intel Nic apps and other files that are not needed since it will not use specific hardware. I would also like to defragment and compact the VHD files.
In my environment, both Exchange and SQL servers have their log files and databases stored on a SAN and the new hyper-V guests will connect to the same LUNS.
With exchange, how does that work so that I don't loose any email? Will it cause a problem since the guest last connected to older data? How can you make sure all the email both internal and external flow through the queues to transaction logs and or the database? Should I stop or dismount the store on the old server, connect the hyper-V guest to the LUNs and then start the store? What about the queue located in the mailroot folders?
SQL pretty much has the same questions except take out the queues.
Thanks for any info!
Jon
Reply:
For Exchange, dismount the database and stop all the Exchange services before the P2V migration. So that you do not loose any external email, hopefully you have an SMTP server that forwards ext email to you Exchange server. If this is so, you can remove the IP to forward the email so that it will set there until you reconnect it after the P2V conversion and maintenance process.
With SQL, just stop the SQL Server service and run the P2V conversion. Start the SQL service on the converted Hyper-V guest after you've completed the maintenance.
I'm not sure there is a better way so that there is less downtime.

Mr. Database and Mrs. Application – The Wedding Vows
Mr. Database To Mrs. Application
- I do solemnly swear to love your validation. I will fully trust that you're passing me the correct datatypes and the lengths will never cause overflow exceptions.
- I do solemnly swear to honor your security. I will fully trust that you have encrypted all accounts in your config files so that my server is never vulnerable or compromised.
- I do solemnly swear to cherish your procedural optimizations that only an OOP environment can provide.
Mrs. Application To Mr. Database
- I do solemnly swear to love your set based environment. I will keep my procedural and conditional statements to myself so that you can focus on providing me with optimal results.
- I do solemnly swear to honor your engine. I will study your execution plans and adjust my querys accordingly until all indexes are being applied, table and index scans are converted to seeks, and your estimated row counts are accurate.
- I do solemnly swear to cherish your design by naturalizing my databases, properly choosing primary keys, create referential integrity, and forever search for new methods to avoid cursors.
Seriously folks. There is yet to be published a good critical thinking reference for the separation of programming roles. Yes you n-tier developers, you have defined layers but even with this strict design, much is left to be decided as to where the optimal adjustments should be made. Example 1: SQL Server can sort but carries a significant overhead to do so. OOP can also sort but will typically sort a smaller and more refined resultset. So should all sorting be done in OOP for performance reasons? Yes, yes, and almost always yes. Example 2: OOP can load and query large datatables in memory but SQL Server employs a query optimizer. Does that mean all querys should be run in the database engine and only return refined datasets? Yes, yes, and almost always yes.
While I could ramble on without endeavor, I would be interested to hear others thoughts on specifically 'where' the often applied methodologies might better benefit the overall designs through either relocation or redesign.

Bug report - taskbar resizing fails
Here is the sequence:
* Start with taskbar "locked"
* not auto-hide
* not use small icons
* taskbar location left of screen
* taskbar buttons 'Always combine, hide labels'
* use desktop preview
Change Taskbar buttons dropdown to 'Never combine' and click Apply
- taskbar grows horizontally to accommodate labels
Change Taskbar buttons dropdown to 'Always combine, hide labels' and click Apply
- taskbar labels disappear but taskbar stays too wide - BUG
Only cure is to unlock the taskbar and manually resize to the minimum again.
Random unrecoverable blackscreen with dual monitors.
This does not seem to be a hardware issue as it is only the primary display that does this(I've switched the primary in Windows and it follows the primary display).

Comments in a View?
I have done this successfully in stored procedures and various select statements that I am using within Reporting Services - however when I try to insert comments into a View they disapear.
I have used the /* text here */ comment to enter into the transact SQL however when I parse the SQL the comments are removed.
any guidance greatly appreciated.
and sorry if this is a silly Question.
many thanks
Gregor

SQL Server 2005,
Using SQL Server Management studio
I right click the view that I wish to edit and select modify from the pop-up menu.
from here each time I enter a transact-SQL comment it disapears when I parse the code.
maybe I am editing it from the wrong screen.

Anyone recommend a proper Windows 7 Forum/BBS...?
...Like this one except one that:
- doesnt (pettily) refuse to work with Firefox
- actually emails notifications
- doesn't keep logging me out (or keep showing me logged in at the top left, at the same time as showing "please sign in" underneath)
- has at least reasonably fast software / server
- doesnt refresh the whole page when you open a new tab
Come on Microsoft - get with the real world! - if you can't even provide a decent BBS/Forum, what chance have you got with an OS?

Well, I can easily use the forum with IE 7/8 and Firefox 3.0.5. In each case, I have a good experience. Although I do believe that more filtering options should be made available, that is not an issue with the forum itself.
