Hi Prince,
We have seen such issues primarily due to a fault with the underlying hardware. To isolate the root cause, can you try running the backup to another disk so that we can be sure if the issue is coming from the backup target volume?

Thanks,

Hi,

I have checked by giving some other drive as dump location. But still im getting the errors. Previouly I had Windows Xp in that machine n I formatted and installed windows 2008.

If it is hardware failure means can you tell the good h/w configuration to run System state backup?

Hi Prince,
    * Was the chkdsk green on both the source volumes as well as target disk?
    * Can you open the error log file reported by wbadmin.exe which has the list of files failed and check if there are any entries
       present?

Hi,

Yes. I have done both the things you said.

Error [0x8007045d] The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.  -  this error comes at 0% dumps.

And the CRC error stops always when it dumps  logon.scr file.

Do u have any idea?

Hi Prince,
Can you please run chkdsk /r /b <Drive>:
This will fix the source disk for any bad sectors.
Then do the System state backup.

Vista Ultimate to 2000 Pro

Okay strange problem.

basic file sharing.  I have usernames and passwords setup on all computers, same user/password on all

1 2000 pro computer
2 xp computers
1 vista computer

xp computers can access 2000 and vista shares fine
2000 pro can access xp and vista shares fine

vista has problems accessing 2000 shares, xp is fine.

When I click on the computer name in the network list of computers, It asks for User name/password. I type it in, and says Unable to Logon, check username/password etc.....I have tried guest account, etc.

Now I just accidently hit the minus sign key twice and hit enter, and it logged on and saw all the shares.   " -- " is all I entered for a username, no password, and then the shared folders showed up.

I don't understand this, why it wont log on with the username's i've set up

anyone have a clue?

Hi,

Before moving on, could you please confirm the following point?

Can you access Windows 2000 share folder with another Windows 2000 user/password from Windows Vista machine?

Then, I suggest enabling Netmon on the computers to capture the network packets.

NOTE: Please reproduce the problem two times. One time with password, one time without password. Thank you for your cooperation.

1) Download NetMon3.2 from the following website and install it on the both computers
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f4db40af-1e08-4a21-a26b-ec2f4dc4190d&DisplayLang=en

2) Log onto the machines, right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.2.

3) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.2 window, click
Create a new capture tab …

4) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.

5) After that, press F10 to start NetMon.

Note: Please start NetMon on both machines.

6) Try to re-produce the problem on the computer.

7) Go back to the NetMon window and press F11 to stop the NetMon.

8) Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file and upload them to the following space:

SDS Examples Updated for Pulbic CTP Server

just a general announcement to let everyone know that, now that the SDS team has completed the migration and is getting ready to turn off the old 'Invite-Only' server cluser,  my SDS Examples have all been updated to point to the Public CTP server cluster and are all up and running.

didn't take much. no code compile needed. some config updates and a couple new entries in my URL rewriter file. thanks to the SDS team for handling the migration of the data, too. looks like it all went very smoothly.

i've checked in the updated code @ my googlecode space (http://code.google.com/p/mikeamundsen/) and will also update the codeplex space soon (http://www.codeplex.com/ssdsexamples). i'll also post new ZIP sets to both locations later this week.

Suggestions for Paging Support in SDS Responses

I know paging support for SDS was discussed a while back (August 2008?) but I can't find the thread and am not sure of the status of this item. In an effort to 'goose' things along, I've posted my suggestion as part of my SDS Feature Wish List page. Details follow:

Currently SDS returns a maximum of 500 entities per query regardless of the number of entities that match the query criteria. Going forward it is important to provide support for paging control. Ideally this should be done as message metadata, not as part of the query itself. One possible exception would be to use the Take(n) query function currently supported by SDS as part of the paging control metadata. A good example of a pattern already 'vetted' by the community is the Feed Paging and Archiving standard developed for the Atom MIME-type. Since SDS seems committed to supporting Atom at some point in the future, using the above-mentioned RFC standard seems a good target.

For MIME-types other than Atom, it is suggested that a set of custom HTTP Headers be employed to cover the same values. Suggested names are: x-paging-first, x-paging-previous, x-paging-next, x-paging-last. In line with RFC5005 (see above), the values should be links, not scalar values. This allows the greatest flexibility for future changes to the way paging is used and/or computed (i.e. x-paging-next: http://example.com/container/entity-25)

Another possible solution would be to consider the HTTP Header Linking draft from Mark Nottingham (i.e. link:<http://example.com/container/>; rel="first"). While this draft is currently dormant, it has potential for wider acceptance over adopting custom HTTP headers.

Looking forward to feedback.

Disk Corruption Increase

Hi

Just a general question (at least to start with!)  Since I've been using Windows 2008 I've seemed to experience a lot more disk corruption.  This is across two computers with completely different architectures (775 versus 771) and different power supplies (although to be fair they are fed from the same power feed ultimately.)  I have recently just rebuillt my VM host because one of the mirror drives failed and in trying to recover the mirror failed completely.  All VM's suffered internal disk corruption messages.

Has anyone else experienced this behaviour or is it time to invest in a surge protector etc?!?   Any other ideas of how disk corruption could "suddenly" become so common other than the wife taking it out on my computers when I am not there :)

Cheers

Hi Zaffer, did you find an answer to this problem. I am also facing the same scenario. Any help greatly appreciated.

I am using  the following web method to publish a briefingbook

Function PublishBook(BriefingPak As Record, BookCaption As String, BookDescription As String, LibraryID As String, EditID As String) As String

I passed the briefing book as a single XML. The book is published but not the pages.

Hi Zaffer

Thank you for responding to me.

I used the proclarity desktop professional to save the book as .bbk and also as .xml.  Do you know if there is an option to tell the desktop professional to generate a single XML instead of the four XML's  it create when save as .XML.

For .bbk, I used BriefingBook.Open to load a  briefing book object.

For .xml, I used the BriefingBook.ImportXML to load the briefing book object.

Then I tried PClient2.PublishBriefingBook to publish the .bbk ( after calling PClient2.Login and setting PClient2.EnablePublishing = true). The book is created with NO Pages.

Can you please tell me the exact steps you followed. My task is to export book to a different server.

Thanks

Anil

Found the DLLs in the Common Files, added references, yet the class does not compile:

The type or namespace name 'PESIntegrationUI5' does not exist in the namespace 'ProClarity.Interop' (are you missing an assembly reference?)

The type or namespace name 'PStore' does not exist in the namespace 'ProClarity' (are you missing an assembly reference?)

That's good stuff.

For all the .NET coders out there another great tip is to stick to stored procedures, and to call them appropriately with the SQLCommand object, setting the parameters and values appropriately after specifying the command type with:
SQLCommand.CommandType = StoredProcedure

When you do this you ensure that .NET will appropriately escape the strings you send to your stored procedures which GREATLY reduces the chance of SQL injection. Of course, running the account(s) that connect to SQL with least permissions is always the way to go as well.

Anyone got a sucessfull enrollment with Samsung I200

the device enrolls connects to vpn but it never completes the connection to the dms it tried to upload inventory but failes over and over again.

I dont have the logs here ill post anything meaningfull in them but wanted to know if anyone got it working on that device.

HTCS740 on the same setup and same sim card works like a charm.

best regards

I tried the S740, and that seems to be working. I noticed that the S740 is also sporting a fairly recent build of Windows Mobile. But since they're both running WM 6.1 it should have worked nonetheless. (For curiosity's sake I would like to know the build of the Samsung if you can provide it.)

My initial though was that the Samsung might have provisioned different APN settings for GPRS if you are using the pre-loaded operator configurators. But if the VPN tunnel is established that shouldn't be an issue either...

Maybe something went wrong with the enrollment process? Have you tried hard resetting the device and re-enrolling it?

Have you tried the MDM Client Tools, enabled logging, and see if there's anything useful there?

Can't think of anything else at the moment. Might help if the logs give any more hints as to what the cause could be.

Hi Andreas.

i forgot the device at work so cant get any meaningfull info exept that it dont work until tomorrow.

the grps network is configured and is working i tried the the same sim as in the S740 to rule out any carrier issues.

Tried 2 different i200 from factory default and ground up.

but ill post some more info tomorrow when i can get the connect log's

Would it be a idea to make a white list of devices known testet as a sticky ?

It's probably not a GPRS issue, but even though your using the same SIM card, and the same operator there is no guarantee that the settings HTC provision are the same settings Samsung are provisioning. (The configurator on the Samsung has been pretty bad before, and even configured some operators incorrectly, but hopefully they've got it sorted by now.)

The "known good devices" list was something I actually thought of a few days ago. But I never got around to doing anything about it though ;) We would need to establish a "baseline" of the tests that must be passed for it to be fully functioning.

Reply:

I have been using the Samsung i200, the VPN and Policies work well. What firmware are you using?
I've already tried and failed to build a white list of working device with Microsoft Internally. There are two many variables involved. Each device, and each firmware, from different MO's will need to be tested. I had differing results testing devices against my MDM server as against Redmond MDM servers, with different SIMS. Then you have to test, VPN, Standard Policies, Software Distribution, Proxy, EXCH, OCS etc...
As I always say "If I've not tested it, I don't trust it."  If you start one up, I'll be more than happy to contribute.

Our Samsung I200 seems to have gone "Walkabout" so I'll have to find it first. There may not be an update on the Samsung site, but there will be different "Flavours" of the firmware depending on which carrier cooked the rom. They have a habit of adding and removing items, which can cause inconsistencies.

thanks for the inputs so far ill post when i know a bit more.

The error code seems like a generic access denied kind of code. Would you be able to produce the enrollment logs? We would need to verify that the server bootstrapping succeeded as the device will not be able to process any OMA DM commands until the server is trusted.

Now, this seems to be a tricky little... I scanned through the logs (ok, I didn't read every line of the deviceupdate.log), and as far as I can tell everything looks good. Up until the last few lines where it throws an error. The bootstrap is fine, the enrollment is fine. You enrollment server does not seem to be located at mobileenroll.domain.com, but that's not required, and it does seem to work regardless of this so I don't consider that to be an issue. The error occurs when it's time to actually do something - pushing policies and getting inventory info.

I know it's the lazy man's solution, but I must admit I'm starting to think it's a bug in your version of the Samsung. (Don't know if you are using a generic Samsung ROM, or an operator-branded version.) I'll have to let the problem simmer in the back of my mind till after the weekend before I decide to give up though :)

As an experiment - is it possible to enroll the device without the VPN connection and try to do a connection direct to the DM server?

yeah it seems that i times outs also got a timeout on the DMS

i get some of the policies pushed down it gets certs and password policy.

its not a branded samsung rom , i got a talk friday with the importer so they would look monday after  a newer rom.

not possible in the test setup its located on VM's with no access other than rdp , we are moving the install monday to production so ill be able to test tuesday with the samsung directly.

thanks for taking the time to look at this.

We found a techie at Samsung that says its a known issue and there is a oem rom update for it that he would help find for us.

SSDS toolkit now available for SSRS:

This would seem big news, I'm surprised it's not being mentioned here or anywhere else.

I'm glad you found the SSDS toolkit for SSRS.  We actually had a demonstration of this at the Professional Developers Conference and now that SSDS is opened up to a Public CTP it's something we can and should evangalize more.  Feel free to post your questions about the SSDS connector here in the SSRS forums and let us know what you think.

Exchange 2007, the solution for (Event ID: 1037)

Recently event viewer of our Exchange Server 2007 (non-SP1) shows below warning (Event Id: 1037):

Event Type:        Warning

Event Source:    MSExchangeTransport

Event Category:                SmtpReceive

Event ID:              1037

Date:                     11/23/2008

Time:                     1:13:36 PM

User:                     N/A

Computer:          EMAIL

Description:

Inbound direct trust certificate with thumbprint 594C381C4F6C9C1DC14E53F8F9A3C1966B9C63D4 has expired. Run New-ExchangeCertificate to generate a new direct trust certificate.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Troubleshooting

We are going to delete expired certificate. So,

A.      We did the following steps:

1.       Runà mmc,  and add "Certificates"

2.       From Personal/Certificates, we explore all certificates.

3.       And then we deleted the expired certificates.

B.      And then we did the following steps to make sure the expired certificate is deleted:

1.       On Exchange Management Shell

2.       We run command: 'get-ExchangeCertificate' to make sure the expired certificate – (first one, local certificate) - is deleted.

Moreover, through the "Exchange Management Shell" we created new certificate via 'get- New-ExchangeCertificate' command.

C.      We go back to step two in (A.) and found the new Certificate has been created and stored on Personal Folder of Local Computer Certificates.

D.      Then we check out the Exchange Server Event Viewer, and we found same error (Event ID: 1037).

Solution:

1         We go back to step two in (A.) and then we copy the new certificate to 'Certificates' sub-folder which resides under 'Trusted Root Certification Authorities' folder.

2         And then we verified...'Event ID: 1037' is not appeared

MCTS exams for VS 2008

Hi Friends,
I am new to this group.

I am working as a .Net developer - Web Based and SQL as backend.
I want to know how many exams are necessary for MCTS 2008. That will cover web based development as well as Database.

According to my knowledge these exams are sufficient to become MCTS 2008 on ASP.Net and Sql Server:-

1. MCTS: .NET Framework 3.5, ADO.NET Applications (Exam 70-561 SQL Server 2008)
2. MCTS: .NET Framework 3.5, ASP.NET Applications (Exam 70-562 )
3. MCTS: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework - Application Development Foundation on 2.0 (Exam 70-536)

Is there anything else I require and if any body has good study material with dumps, please let me know.

Thanks in Adavance.

Regards
Ajay Gautam

hi
Yes, you are correct, the exams you have listed are MCTS: Asp.net 3.5 certifications.

Here is the link: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcts/vstudio/2008/default.mspx

You might want to look at SQL server 2008 certification path also.
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcts/sql/2008/default.mspx

There are some really good books on bookstore now with Wrox press asp.net 3.5, Microsoft press book "Programming asp.net 3.5" to help you study for the exams.  Or go to msdn.microsoft.com to browse through these topics.

good luck!

Hi

What you have there is actually 2 MCTS certs, 1 is the MCTS ASP.NET and the other is the MCTS ADO.NET as both require the exam 70-536.

You dont have the requirements for an MCTS on SQL 2008.

Currently there are 3 different types, based on BI, Database Admin and Database Dev

As you are a developer, I am guessing that you will be doing the MCTS SQL 2008 Database Developer which is a single exam number 70-433

If you take a look at the exam guide for each exam you will get a good idea of what is required.

Soap Service Reference in VS2008 leaves much to be desired.

Hi Guys,

Generating a soap service reference currently sucks, it's a PITA to generate the proxy code and settings from the WDSL only to then have to go and manually edit the generated .cs file to alter the return types from Entity[] to List<Entity> and the app config file buffer limits, I know that its documented and not difficult to fix, but this is a "first impression" thing, really I need to be able to just generate and go.

Cheers Tim.

PS
I don't wish to come across as a prat who is never satisfied with anything, I believe in what you guys are trying to achieve and wholly support it. Just wanting you to get real world feedback.

(Anil, Ryan I met you at Mountain View for the tech partner preview sessions early this year, I was the guy who came all the way from Australia, I have huge respect for you both.)

Tim,

Couple of points.  First, you're quite right that you have to manually modify the buffer settings to use for large messages.  Unfortunately, that is not something that's under our direct control :-(  Not the greatest of things but it's what we have at this stage.

Regarding the generated .cs files.  You *do* have the option of changing these.  You simply need to click on the, "Advanced" button when adding the service reference.  This will present you with a dialog which will allow you to choose how collections are generated for you in the proxy classes.  If you wanted to do what you've done with your modifications simply change the default collection type from System.Array -> System.Collections.Generic.List and that should do the trick.

Hope this helps,

Microsoft Certification Certificate

It has been 10 years since my last Microsoft certification, well, until last week.  I downloaded an electronic copy of my certificate, and noticed that it was signed by Bill Gates, who is that guy?  Just kidding.  But a big deal was made recently about Mr. Gates' departure from Microsoft.  I guess he is still the chairman, but is he still the 'chief software architect' like the certificate says?  Not that it matters, I just was a little surprised to see it.
