[Forum FAQ]How to do Sysprep in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130

[Forum FAQ]How to do Sysprep in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130

Symptom:

Someone may would like to Sysprep Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130 for a test. However, when they run Sysprep in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130, they may find that an error message pops out saying that:

A fatal error occurred while trying to Sysprep the machine.

Then check the Sysprep setupact.txt log, we could find the logged error saying this:

SYSPRP Encountered error 0x80070020 while deleting contents of package repository. Another process, likely Windows Installer service, is accessing the files inside

'C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\AppRepository'.

Try stopping the Windows Installer service and ensure that no other process is accessing files inside this directory before retrying [gle=0x00000012]

'C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\AppRepository'.  This folder is used for storing the information about Windows Store Apps, as we may find out, a newly created in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130, there would be some Windows Store Apps still under the downloading/installing process when we logon the first time.

Which I suspect should be root cause of this issue here.

Workaround:

So in the current situation, if we would like to run Sysprep successfully on the newly created Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130 machine, we need to wait until the Apps finishing their installation, then we can run the Sysprep with the built-in admin account.

If Sysprep fails with the above error, then please wait for another hours.

The first time I failed sysprep, and the next day when I run the sysprep under C:\Windows\system32\sysprep, and select the generalize option, it failed a second time, but with a different error message:

[0x0f00ae] SYSPRP WinMain:Hit failure while processing sysprep cleanup external providers; hr = 0x8007001f

See the picture for this error:

Then I open registry and find the following archive:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\SysprepStatus

Chnage the value of GeneralizationState from 3 to 7, then run the Sysprep again.

This time Sysprep finished and the machine reboot successfully.

Power BI Page Size should be left for user to decide

There are many use cases where report elements do not fit into the current size of Power BI single page, not having cross page filters is making it worse. Why can't we leave Page size open for end user / designer to decide.

Thanks,

well idk what they are thinking over there but there has been so many misleading articles there.

most recent was criticizing amd's ceo for saying the r9 nano will be perfect for living room small form factors because it doesn't have hdmi 2.0 yet the 3 displayports that the fury gpu's have are perfect for anyone due to being enabled to transfer hdmi2.0 via cheap adapter and gives way more bandwidth as im sure you guys know around here means no subsampling for 4:4:4 at 4k 60hz and what you need for 5k along with alot of smaller resolution displays.

i thought it was a serious joke about some of things the mods are saying or a experiment with trouble shooting but its not..

they are highly cynical and have not listened to anything that the people that actually make technology are trying to tell them in years.

one article is just how important is gpu memory bandwidth and they say the measurements might be wrong for starters. like why is there compression now on shorter memory bus and why have they made hbm? it really doesnt take a scientist or engineer to see trends and what they mean.. especially when you can watch videos made simple enough like the discovery channel that a kid could start learning.

well i would like to say very nice job on the multi threaded command buffer and async shaders from what i have seen if you or anyone you know worked(ing) on them.

its almost baffling how many just cant grasp what it all means.

Exchange 2013 - EML files missing attachments when not running in cached exchange mode.

Hi,

We have recently upgraded from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013. Since the migration we have had issues with our archiving system.  Bascially the archiving system creates .eml files types

When Outlook is running in non-cached exchange mode any attachments within these .eml files are missing when the eml file is opened. If you change Outlook to run on cached mode the attachments show up fine.

It's almost identical to the following issue;

http: // social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/b9a390a9-e014-4098-ad6e-dd377a53422a/office-2010-exchange-2010-attachments-in-emlemails-are-invisible?forum=outlook

Except for the Exchange version this is exactly what is happening to us. Is anyone aware of whether the same issue fixed in Rollup update 5 for Exch 2010 SP1 is present in Exchange 2013?

Get more time to execute sql query when field has 50 kb string

When I run the SQL script (SELECT Column1 FROM Table1) it takes more time (approximately 25-30 seconds) to execute a query.

Column1 data type : NVARCHAR(MAX)

Column1 data size : 50.2 kb

Can any one explain the reason for this long execution time?

Could take time to fetch all the rows from disk, or it could be blocking, ....

You can see for yourself by

SET STATISTICS IO ON

SET STATISTICS TIME ON

before running the query in SSMS.   Then you will see messages about the resources used by the query.

The handle is invalid

I have a network drive that have been joined to my domain. I receive "The handle is invalid" anytime I try to access it through the UNC eg. \\netdrive but this same UNC works for the computers that are not joined to the domain.

Ping responds alright from the server and domain computers but a UNC connection to it simply does not work.

I wonder where the problem is actually coming from, will it have something to do with Windows server 2012 or Windows 7 Pro.

See a link to screenshots of the problem.

Please can anyone help me with solution?

Thanks,

Harrison.

Updating App-V apps deployed by SCCM

Hi,

If I use SCCM 2012 to deploy my sequenced packages, using download and execute (no streaming from distribution points) method I understand that the package will be downloaded to the local SCCM cache and when a user launches the app the App-V client copes the content into the App-V cache.

What happens when I update the package on the SCCM server? If I create a new deployment for the updated package will the whole thing download to the SCCM cache? I am looking for a method of only downloading the differences if possible (I know this would probably be a lot easier if I choose streaming instead of download and execute!).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Reply:

OK so I think I found the answer but have not had the chance to test yet but I believe this is the answer:

  • Remote Differential Compression (RDC) is a data transfer method that optimizes data transmission over the network.  Configuration Manager uses RDC to send only the portions of files that have changed to clients when virtual application package content is updated.  The Configuration Manager Client uses RDC to build a new version of a virtual application package based on the current version of the package and the changes that are sent to the client.
Taken from Virtual Application Management with Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5/4.6 and System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2  whitepaper but I believe it is still valid for App-V 5.

Anyone have any experience using RDC?

------------------------------------
Reply:

I'm presuming you upgrade you're existing package in the App-V sequencer and are then adding that new package into SCCM and using the supersedence option? You can also retire the old package which will remove the files from the SCCM cache on its next deletion cycle.

When you create a new deployment in SCCM, for you're upgraded package, it will download those package files in full (download and execute) into the SCCM cache. At this point SCCM client will attempt to Add/Mount and Publish this package; depending on whether its targeted at a user or computer collection. It's only at this point will the App-V client determine if its an upgrade at which time if will perform a differential (delta) upgrade.

It uses RDC when you are just updating the content for an existing package i.e. modifying the dynamic configuration files.

If disk space is a limiting factor for you then you should look at using the "stream content from DP" in conjunction with the Shared Content Store.

Here is a blog by Thamim Karmin that you might find useful.

How do you interpret this.........

Microsoft U-turns on 'free' Windows 10 upgrade promise for ALL previewers

Source

English is not my first language and I am having trouble interpreting the article.

Bottom line :

I have Microsoft account connected to ALL my computers running Windows OS.

I am dual booting Win 8.1 Pro with Insider Preview build 10130.

Needless to say, my Insider preview was a clean install on a separate partition.

Now, besides getting a free upgrade from my Win 8.1 Pro, do I also get a free Win 10 RTM out of my Insider Preview ?

I have been maintaining that only my Win 8.1 Pro will get a free upgrade, but not my Insider Preview.
Seems to me Gabriel Aul's recent clarification is pointing to that .

You know, as I had said before in other thread, I'll wait for July 29th and find out the REAL answer.

There has been plenty of speculation on this, but according to the official Q&As it is still a full version - not a trial or introductory version.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq

Under "Is the upgrade really free?"

1. Nobody says it will be a trial version. Anyone who has gone this far knows that.

2. That FAQ does not answer my question.

Manage Your Organization in ecp does nothing

I'm trying to create a Role group that only lets users modify the existing AGL.  Specifically, the members will need to mark old users as Hidden, but I know I can't get that granularity.  I have created a Role Groupe called AddressMgr with Addree List Role, the scope of domain.com, and added the users to it.

I'm kind of new at this, and know I'm missing something important here.  The users can loginto ecp, but when the try to open Manage Your Organization, nothing happens.  What am I missing?

Thanks

If I, who has full rights to everything, clicks on the link in Options in owa, then See All Options, it takes me to the ecp.  In there I see all Mailboxes, Users and Groups, etc.  If one of my users in the AddressMgt group does the exact same thing, when they click on Manage Your Organization, it's as if they clicked on no link at all.  It does nothing.  Other links in the right panel work, but not that one.  I think I have omitted a step in granting them access to this.

This is an on-site Exchange, btw.

I made a copy of one of the users I am trying to affect.  Zoe Zygote, a small man, but an exact copy of my target users.  Here is what he sees, and if you scroll to the right, you will see that "Manage Your Organization" is blue, so it has been clicked on, but after 10 minutes, nothing happens.  The status bar doesn't display anything.  I have deleted and recreated the ecp folder, in case you are wondering.

2. Login as the local Administrator. Domain admin will not do.
3. Open Metabase Explorer in RK Tools.
4. Navigate to LM – W3SVC – 1 - Root
5. Delete the ECP key and sub keys.
6. Open EMS and run New-EcpVirtualDirectory.

Is it possible to copy a package?

Hello,

I have Sccm 2012 and I'm looking a way to copy a package (with deploy configuration, scripts, etc) from one collection to other collection because I want to avoid create the same package for 12 collections but I'm not be able to find a way to do it.

Thnak you in advance for the Help.

Reply:
You don't do it this way. You create one package and deploy it to multiple collections

Cheers Paul | http://sccmentor.wordpress.com

------------------------------------
Reply:

Thank you for the answer,

I thought that option, but I want that the pakage is in the different distributions points, I don't want to have problems with the line because there are a lot of collections with a lot of computers in different contries. I need to have the package in each distribution points.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Therefore create Distribution groups based on your boundaries for content location awareness.

Cheers Paul | http://sccmentor.wordpress.com

------------------------------------
Reply:

Hello,

I'm not sure what do you want to say, can you explain it better. Currently I have a collection for each office and each country, also I have a distribution point and boundary for each collection.

Thank you.

------------------------------------
Reply:

You can organise your DP's into groups and apply them to particular boundaries but it sounds like you are already doing this with your DP's (they don't have to be in groups).

When you create a package you distribute it to the DP's and this where the package is copied to, not the collections. You then deploy the package to the collection and this targets that package at any of the clients in the collection. They then download the package from the DP's when they pick up that deployment from policy.

WSUS Server itself does not update, error: 80244019

Hello,

we have set up a new WSUS Server 2012 R 2 in order to replace our old w2k3 WSUS. The WindowsUpdate information is pushed to cleints/server via GPO's. There is one GPO for all Domain Servers (WSUS is one of them). Everything works fine so far, beside WSUS it self. I mean the OS Server where WSUS Services runs on.

WSUS Servicees work fine, we download patches from Widnows update and they are deployed, reso. requested and downloaded by all clients from our WSUS than. But the WSUS server itself when it checks for updates,it gets notified about e.g. 70 updates to be applied. Once I say install updates it returns error code  80244019.

I have to say that the policy sets WUServer, WUStatusServer and a TargetGroup, and some other settings like reboot yes/no, etc..... Identical settings, same GPO) works for all other servers in the network.

Also, I have set WSUS port to 80 from 8530 or 8531, whatever it was.

telnet wsus.domain.intra 80 works from the localhost (WSUS)

Any idea why WSUS itself is special?

kind regards,

Dieter Tontsch

WSUS on WS2012/R2 does not run on port 80; it runs on port 8530 (or 8531 if you implemented SSL).
Regardless of WSUS-as-client or other clients, WSUS v6 (WS2012/R2) does not run or port 80.

Unless you have reconfigured it to do so - which is AFAIK totally unsupported.

IIS will be listening on the default website on port 80 but that is not WSUS client webservice.

For the WUAgent problem on WSUS itself, just as for any other WSUS client you must examine the c:\windows\windowsupdate.log

It may be a name resolution or routing issue, in case your WSUS is multi-homed ?

Hello,
port 80 may not be supported, but in this case it was not the issue - since my server in charge could communicate with wsus without any issue. I have switched back to 8350 however afterwards, but my update started working again after I did once "wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow". It only started working again after that, not after any reboot or so. I guess /resetauthorization was the key parameter.

These forums are how I found out about the TechNet Wiki. I have since been an Azure Guru two times.

If you are looking to get some exposure for yourself this is an excellent way to do it. See the Wiki Ninjas Blog for all kinds of reasons as to why you should get involved.

SCCM Client in untrusted forest

I've installed a client in an untrusted forest using the following command line

SMSSITECODE = xxx SMSMP=FQDN FSP=FQDN DNSSUFFIX=suffix

I see the machine in SCCM (unapproved but that's expected).  However, the client is only partially installed (only two actions in the control panel applet)

Looking at locationServices, I see that the client is looking to AD, then registry then DNS for its location and it's complaining that it can't find anything.

I haven't published site information to the untrusted forest, is that the recommendation?

Reply:

Hi,

Did you approve it? otherwise the client will not show more than to actions in the control panel applett as it is not approved to talk to the SCCM Site.

Regards,
Jörgen

Yes we did, in LocationServices I am seeing

failed to retrieve MP certificate encryption info from AD

Failed to retrieve root site code from AD

Reply:
This single line does not help as it just shows that the client cannot retrieve anything from AD. Is it able to get the information from the MP itself instead?

how to turn off narrator

Build 10130 doesn't boot unless Multicore CPU and Hyper-threading are disabled

I first encountered the issue when trying to upgrade from 10122 to 10130, the system turned into a boot loop: windows logo appeared, then PC rebooted. After 2 reboots windows logo appeared with message containing roughly something like "Preparing repair mode" and then it rebooted just like before.

I've downloaded build 10130 ISO and tried to boot from USB stick and ancountered the same issue: when booting from USB, windows logo showed up for several seconds and then the system rebooted.

After searching the internet I've found a solution to this problem here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/38aa8a/for_everyone_thats_getting_stuck_in_a_boot_loop/

Basically system doesn't boot if either hyper-threading or multicore CPU options are enabled in BIOS. I've managed to successfuly install 10130 after disabling HT and multicore, and turning either back on prevents system from booting.

Is this a known issue? Are there workarounds/ways to enable at least multicore support in 10130?

I'm using HP ProBook 470G1 with Intel Core i3 CPU.

Reply:

I did not have that problem I have dual Xeon 8 Core with Hyper-threading enable no such problems.

I'm pretty confident this build wouldn't make it to fast ring if it didn't support multicore CPUs or HT at all.

Obviously the issue occurs on very specific kinds of hardware configurations, although apparently I'm not the only one experiencing this problem, as evident from the reddit link I provided in the original post.

I'd like to know if there's some kind of workaround or at least hotfix in testing that would resolve the issue. I'd very much like to continue participating in Insider program but lack of multicore support is a blocker for me and forced me to roll back to 8.1.

Alex,

Thanks for sharing this.

Currently there seems to be a little ahrd to offer any workarounds based on the special situation.

I can only suggest that we submit feedbacks with your system information on this topic and wait for the updates regarding the special hardwares.

-append searchmailbox log

Hello

I have E3 licenses and I am preforming searches with Powershell.

When we have a Phishing attack, I will have a CSV file of the mailboxes that were targeted. We would like to delete the email and know which users opened the email.  I would use the following:

import-csv example.csv | % {search-mail $_.upn -Searchquery "from:example@example.com" -deletecontent -loglevel full -targetfolder Examplefolder -targetmailbox examplemailox}

This does what I want and gives me the information I want, but not in the format I want.  The log files are separate CSVs for each mailbox, I'd like to do something similar to -append so that I would have one CSV withal the log information.

Is this and if so how do I do it?

Thank you

Steve

Hello,

Thanks for the response, but I'm sorry I don't really follow.  If I could send the logs to a file, I would see how this would work, but the logs get sent to an outlook mailbox as a zipped attachment and a different mail item for each mailbox searched.

Further explanation on this process would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

I think you will have to learn PowerShell to understand.  You import the file so the file exists.  Just get al of the files and generate a single file.

In my simple test, I see that the Group-Policy does exist on 2012R2 but not for 2012.

I isolated the registry changes so I can update a 2012 only system... that text is below.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers]
"ShowJobTitleInEventLogs"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers]

I hope this helps others out since it took sometime to narrow this down. Thank you.

Hyper-V Management Tools - POLL

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to get some feed back from the real world on what management software is being most widely used by Hyper-V users to manage their Hyper-V virtual datacenters. If you could please let me know from the following options it would be great. The goal is to create a plug-in/console for the software that is used by most Hyper-V deployments.

Please respond to the thread with your replies.

Options:

  1. System Center Virtual Machine Manager
  2. Failover Cluster Manager
  3. Hyper-V Manager

Thanks!

Hi,

for just 1 server u can use hyperv manager, if u have 2 or more servers, i think cluster manager will do. For scvmm u need some extra skils, u need to understand the network topology in scvmm.

U can take a look for hyperv manager from 5nine company if u dont like hyperv manager.

Thanks sblatic.

Do you know what is recommended by Microsoft or what do actual Hyper-V users lean towards? I know this is a "it depends" answer based on the environment - but any feedback will be valuable. We can assume there are more than 2 Hyper-V servers.

None of those three do the job 100% for anything other than standalone hosts, so I think you'll find most people using a combination. I use all three and lots of PowerShell. There are third party tools to consider as well.

Right there with Eric.

Also, only SCVMM really has any type of plug-in model.  The other two don't due to the Server Manager underpinnings.

Hyper-V Manager was built for individual hosts.  Cluster Manager for clustered hosts (HA).  And SCVMM has its own paradigm, but would be your datacenter option.

And don't forget Windows Azure Pack, and the new Azure Stack.

Each has its own paradigm.

Then you do have some strong 3rd parties in the market.  Mainly 5Nine.

Adding 2012 DC to a 2008R2 domain which still contains a 2003 DC

We need to remove a legacy 2003 DC, which also contains a certificate role service, but for now we just want to remove the domain controller feature. My supervisor was told by a class instructor that there are some challenges with introducing a 2012 DC into a domain containing a 2003 DC. We're not sure if that meant a 2003-only environment (which doesn't apply to us) or an environment which already has a 2008R2 DC in it (which we have, it holds all the FSMO roles).

I have a new 2012 server in the domain, but have not added the domain role to it, leery of side effects. We do not have a test environment, are there any details I should check before installing the 2012 domain role? My SharePoint admin (we are using SP 2010 SP1) has asked if he'll still be able to access the domain by using the LDAP://domain.com syntax? We are using Exchange 2010 SP3 RU9, so we are good there.

In another forum post, someone stated:

It doesn't affect SharePoint functionality at all. What you have to keep in mind is that you have your User profile information synchronized afterwards and check if your authentication models has changed. In other words, SharePoint leverages the underlying AD infrastructure information, so make sure it is still with the same (like domain/domain controllers, authentication types etc)

Not sure how to validate the authentication model.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for your post.

If you want to add windows server 2012 DC to your domain environment, Check to ensure the Domain Functional Level is currently setup to at least Windows 2003 mode. This is the lowest required Domain Functional Level that would allow a Windows Server 2012 Domain.

The boss wants to depromo the old 2003 DC, then add the 2012 DC role on the new server because he wants to mitigate the concern his instructor had. If we need to keep the old server online for it's legacy Certificate role, then we need to give the new server a new name & IP.  I wanted to keep the IP & name the same on the new server so we wouldn't have to update so many references to the services hosted on the new DC.

I would rather verify whether the certificate role is still being referenced in the environment, and if it isn't then not worry about losing that service; if it is still being referenced then I need to know how to migrate those services to another server; we already have a 2008R2 CA in the environment. If we get the Cert concern resolved, then it should be a straight forward transition.

Does this forum cover certificate server questions?

I got the CA moved to a 2008 server. We're currently using the 2003 forest & domain  functional levels, and it won't let me raise it. Will they remain at those levels after I remove the last 2003 DC, or will it automatically upgrade them since the last 2003 DC was removed?

Edit: Will there be any effect on the external, 2-way, non-transitive trust we have with our sister company's domain, which is currently at a 2003 forest/domain functional level (2008 and 2008R2 are available though)?

Hello,

if this is still an open issue there is no automatic raise from functional levels.

Which error is shown if you try to raise the levels?

Did you start with the domain or forest functional level?

Are all older OS DCs removed from the domain AND the AD database? Maybe there are some old DCs listed that where not removed correct with dcpromo?

Yes, still an open issue, tentatively planning to remove the 2003 DC from the environment about 10 hours from now.

When I attempt to raise the domain or forest functional level from Windows Server 2003, it states: You cannot raise the domain functional level because this domain includes Active Directory Domain Controllers that are not running the appropriate version of Windows.

I suspect this is because the Windows 2003 DC won't play nice with the later functional levels. So after removing and cleaning up the 2003 DC remnants, the levels will remain at 2003 but we should then be allowed to raise those levels.

Can anyone confirm whether trusts are effected by removing a domain controller or modifying the domain/forest functional levels?

New Systems management Solution

I currently use Dell KACE systems for computer management.  I have both the K1000 and the K2000 and have been working with them for about eight years.  The exciting part is that you can get either a virtual system or the actual servers themselves here on site and they come ready to go and have a unique jump start process for training working with your own system.  There is an article that might interest people if they are looking at or accessing different options for systems management.  Following is the link for that article and I think many would find it interesting and beneficial.  It is comparing Dell KACE 1000 and KACE 2000 Systems as well as LANDESK Management Suite 9.6 SP1, Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager (SCCM) and Symantec Altiris Client Management Suite 7.5 SP!.  I believe it is important to continually educate yourself on different options, often just to see what you have is best for your organization or you find a better, lower cost solution.  Or you may even want to do a test with one of them.  So if you get the chance, read this article:

Problem on manually Updating DPM Agent to 2012 R2 RU6 on passive node of SQL 2012 and 2014 Failover Clusters (With CSV on 2014)

Hi,

I would like confirmation that it is not possible to update (doing a manual install/update on the server) to rollup 6 agent on a passive sql 2012 or 2014 failover cluster node. More so I was not able to uninstall the dpm agent from the passive nodes. Only after failing over the sql instances I was able to update the agent with no problems what so ever.

The eventviewer show error 1023:

Product: Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 DPM Protection Agent - Update 'Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 DPM Protection Agent Update - KB3030574' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file C:\Windows\\Temp\MSDPMAgentPatchInstall.LOG.

The above mentioned servers are in an untrusted domain and connected to dpm by using certificates.

I did some more test and it seems that the MSDTC Resource group needs to be active or the manual installation fails. It does install version 4.2.1205 but not the patch 4.2.1312. Whether DPM uses CErtificates does not maater in this case.

SQL Server Open File Dialog Freezes

I am havign a problem with open file dialog. when I select from the list next to "Look in" and then I click on a subfolder, sql server management studio freezes for a minute and then works.

Any thoughts?

Reply:

Yes, the SSMS will enumerate all of the files in the directory.  If there are enough files, it will take a long time to complete.

You can see the same behavior with Windows Explorer, although Windows 7 Windows Explorer will start showing files before they are all enumerated.

How many files are in your subfolder?

Newbie Coding error in Visio/ Active Directory

Hey guys

I'm relatively new to Microsoft Visio and Active Directory. I'm trying to display the username's in an active directory but I keep running into error. I constantly have to define all my classes and it makes me wonder if I am doing it right. For example, in the code given below, I typed in PrincipalContext which wasn't found and after right clicking I had to generate a  class for it. After which now ContextType has an error "ContextType" doesn't exist the current context. So I have the option to either generate a property stub or a field stub. So what should I do in order to make sure that they are accessing the domain?

If I define PrincipalContext as a property stub , I get the error "object does not contain a definition for domain and no extension method domain accepting a first argument? What should I do?
How should I define PrincipalContext in order for it recognize Domain?

Type 4 PostScript Drivers, Problem with multiple copies when Collate is enabled

Good afternoon all,

We are seeing a strange problem when using the inbox HP Type 4 PostScript drivers for certain printers.  In particular, the HP LaserJet 400 M401 PS Class driver and the HP LJ300-400 color M351-M451 PS Class Drivers.  Whenever a user specifies multiple copies of a document, and collate is enabled, they will get many more copies than they ask for.  If you disable collate, it will print the proper number.  If we change to the PCL6 version of the Type 4 driver, then it seems to print normally.  One thing I noticed is that the PS class drivers are all older version 6.3.9600.16384 while the PCL6 drivers are newer 6.3.9600.17415.  The Microsoft Enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver is also 6.3.9600.17415, so I am wondering if the cause is a driver version mismatch (since all of our clients are Windows 7 Professional machines)?

Can somebody from Microsoft reach out and tell me if this is expected behavior or if something is up?  I would expect the PS and PCL6 inbox class drivers to at least be the same version.  HP was no help.

Hi,

Thanks for your post.

I think we need to keep the Microsoft Enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver and PS class driver version matching.

Please make sure the configuration is correct, if the configuration is ok, only the driver version is different, it may be caused by the driver version mismatch.

The  6.3.9600.16384 version is the driver that was built with the release on Server 2012R2.  The 6.3.9600.17415 version would be one that included some patch from Microsoft.

I do see where there was a patch for the xps to printer PDL last year.  Both these files are the 17415 version

--a-- W32x64 DRV ENU  0.3.9600.17415 shp  5,253,632 10-28-2014 msxpspcl6.dll
--a-- W32x64 DRV ENU  0.3.9600.17415 shp  5,243,392 10-28-2014 msxpsps.dll

The device functionality supported comes from HP.  HP provides the driver to MS after HP has tested that the drivers work for the device.  The vendor basically says, this works.  There are file checks in place but MS is not testing the devices when HP said the driver works.

Since the PCL driver does work the way that you need it, is there a reason to go to the not working driver provided by HP?

Hi Alan, I was hoping this topic would catch your eye.

Collate appears to be broken with all the HP PostScript Class drivers.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to get in touch with the right person/people at HP so I have little to no hope of it getting resolved.

There's no particular reason I need to go with the Post Script drivers per se, its just that from past experience I've tended to have better luck with Post Script drivers producing similar output across different devices.

I really prefer to use the Type 4 drivers; they seem lightweight and free of the usual vendor "add ons" such as supply status notification popups, etc, that tends to cause a lot of problems I've seen in the past.

I've asked someone from HP to send me a comment on this post.  Could you update the post regarding the vendor laden comment?  I agree with you, I prefer an inf only driver installation.

Thanks

:-) Good job.

Here's some additional information

I just tried this on my Win8.1 machine, it has the right version of the MSxpsPS.dll as 6.3.9600.17415. I could not repro the problem the TechNet webpage mentioned. I tried to print multiple pages multiple copies and collated job to an "HP Color LaserJet Flow MFP M880" high end printer and to "HP LaserJet 4100" older printer. Using this printer is not an issue as I can tell, since the PS v4 inbox class driver is basically the same one for all models. It sounds the customer needs to grab the latest MSxpsPS.dll.

I think you are using the .17415 version.  I see the same in PrintManagement but the version I have is .17415.

Hi Alan,
I should point out that all of my clients connecting to the print server are Windows 7 Professional boxes, so they are getting and using the "Microsoft Enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver."

I've tried using 3 different Post Script HP v4 class drivers (HP LaserJet 400 M401 PS Class, HP Color LaserJet 4600 PS Class, and HP LJ300-400 color M351-M451 PS driver) all with the same result.  They all report being at version 6.3.9600.16384.  If I switch to the PCL6 version of those drivers, the driver version increments up to 6.3.9600.17415 and all the Windows 7 clients print fine.  Also, I don't know that this matters but the PS class driver always reports the "Speed: Unknown" and "Staples: Yes" even when it doesn't staple, but if I switch to the PCL6 Class driver, it reports the speed and staple correctly.

I think HP made some kind of improvement between .16384 and .17415 that the Post Script drivers didn't receive.
