Requirement for SMS Notifications

Requirement for SMS Notifications

Hi,

We have SCOM 2012R2 deployed as a Virtual Machine. We wish to use SMS Notification.

We have SMS Gateway Service running in our LAN.

On SCOM we created

  • SMS Notification Channel.
  • Subscriber
  • Subscription

What do we do Next?

How will SCOM know the Cell number of the Subscriber & how will all this work?

Could any one guide with the communication flow from SCOM VM to the User receiving an SMS notification?

Reply:

SMS notification channel is only for physically installed GSM cards, not for modems or SMS gateways or SMS webservices etc.

You need to find how to send a SMS through your gateway using a cmd line and run a Command notification channel using that cmd line instead of using a SMS notification channel

Okay, that "SMS notification channel is only for physically installed GSM cards" but is it documented anywhere by Microsoft ?

------------------------------------
Reply:

Not explicitly, but you can read "The modem used for SMS must support SMS Protocol Data Unit (PDU) mode."  here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212811(v=sc.12).aspx

Which also means I was wrong about "Modems", it supports some of them (but I've had issues with the ones I tried).

Also you could see this blog : http://blog.msvconsultancy.co.uk/2014/08/sms-text-alerts-within-scom-2012/

CyrAz,

Will try out the GSM Modem. This will take some time.

Thank You.

How do you convert an excel file to a csv file without having excel, library, etc. else installed?

Hello,

You need at least a installed ACE data provider to access & read a MS Excel, without it is not possible.

Event Viewer Disk Alerts - DPM 2016

Just curious if anyone using DPM 2012R2 or DPM 2016 has any of these alerts listed below. We upgraded DPM 2012R2 to 2016 UR1. Everything has been working fine and dandy so far except some minor hiccups. We have SCOM monitoring and I noticed these alerts are starting to pop up in SCOM. Not frequently but enough to raise suspicion. These three alerts from what I read relate to the hard drives. Currently we have no blinky lights or any other indication that we have failing drives except these alerts. I looked into just about everything I could and ran what diagnostic tools I could for the hard disks. All tests came back with no issues. I did notice in Event Viewer under Windows Logs -> Application there are defrag operations going on when the other errors take place but not every time so I feel this is just a coincidence.

The purpose of this post was to find out if anyone else is seeing these alerts and is this related to how MBR (Modern Backup Recovery) functions?

NEEDED: More Answerers

We need more answerers in this forum! Let me know if you've been part of this community pretty consistently for at least 6 months, have answered at least 100 questions (with at least 1,000 Recognition Points) and are interested in helping propose and mark answers. Sorry about the requirements, but it helps make sure we get help from people who are experienced and known in the community.

The basic idea is that you would propose an answer and then mark it 7 days later. When the OP chimes in, we might need to provide new answers and unpropose the old ones. The Answerers will need to agree to follow these guidelines: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1059.forum-moderation-guide-managing-posts-and-threads-marking-answers.aspx#Guidance

I'm inviting the following community members to be given the role of Answerer:

Reply here if you qualify and want to help or if you are accepting your invitation to join us! Please reply after you read the guidelines from the link above and reply whether you agree to follow them.

Thanks!

Since I've just become active in this forum recently, I've only answered a few dozen question so far, and don't meet the qualification criteria yet.

I have to say though, I'm a little discouraged, because hardly any of my responses have been marked as 'answered', so, I don't get any points as a result. Most of the question threads remain open as not yet answered, even though I thought my answer was what OP was looking for.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I think I would be motivated to be more active if I was actually getting points credit for more of my answers.

Hopefully, having more people designated as 'answerers' will help.

Alright Vishe. I'm starting you as an Answerer (same as everyone else, except MVPs). But, for some reason, you upset lots of people in another forum. So I'm not sure what it was (copying answers, maybe linking to your own site incessantly... a little is okay, but a lot is seen as spam... and maybe being off topic some)... I don't know. But I suggest you start repairing any broken bridges and not doing whatever is upsetting people. Otherwise, the Answerer role isn't going to last. But, I think you've had a great contribution. So please repair some relationships. And thank you for your help!

I have been advised to use Azure for my next project. For a simple project what is the best advice?

I have never used Azure or the cloud before. And for that matter I have never used Xamarin. And I am a lone developer...

I am experienced in C#, MVC, EF, SQL Server. And I have been researching Azure but I feel a bit overwhelmed, can you help me with some advice?

The project is quite simple. We have a local datacentre which contains a database table or properties. We want a Xamarin app that inspectors can use to inspect properties and report faults, and the progress in which they are being fixed.

And we want an admin web app to add properties and check progress.

The scale is relatively small with about 20 inspectors at any time and properties reaching about 100K rows in about 5 years time.

The web app will use windows authentication.

We use the company VPN. If the VPN connection goes down I need to store the data on the mobile device locally until it is up again.
So maybe a hybrid solution?
Starting today in January 2017, what would I recommend I look into to get started on this? I appreciate any help you can give me.

SCOM SLA Dashboards Causing High CPU on Data Warehouse database.

I had created SLA dashboards for my application computer objects (Windows Computer objects only 5-6 computers ex: SCCM computer objects) and Created SLO's.

Created a group for all 5-6 computers and Added dependency roll up monitor for the group to roll the health of all computers for Group SLA calculation.

Created a consolidated SLA dashboards to show the SLA for Last 24 hrs, 7 days and 30 days.  Added Individual computers and group to show the SLA of Group and individual computers.

Everything is working fine and SLA Dashboards are loading successfully.  But when While dashboard is refreshing SQL service on DW server is taking 100% CPU consistently.

I had changed the dashboard refresh interval from 60 seconds to 5 mins. still it is same issue.

I had collected SQL profiler trace and found SLA Dashboard related sql queries are executing continuously. But I didn't see any SQL blocks.

I would like to know why SQL is taking high CPU for simple SLA dashboards and is there any known issues or any recommendations

Documentation regarding hardware acceleration in Office

I'm looking to find documentation regarding hardware acceleration in Office.

One of the things we found so far is that Outlook has far more hangs and crashes when hardware acceleration is enabled, affecting about 15% of computers, with nothing in common.

We're having a discussion whether or not we should disable Hardware Acceleration in Office for all our clients.

Advantage:

Roughly ~15% (2250 clients) are likely to have a better experience with Office programs.

Theoretic potential disadvantage – just a thought:

Our theoretic disadvantage is that the remaining ~85% might experience slower/less responsive Office (if we take into consideration Hardware acceleration is making their Office application more stable/faster).

What I am unable to find is any good documentation on the benefits of having hardware acceleration enabled for typical high-end business laptops.

Does anyone have any experience or information on this that could help us make a decision whether we should move forward disabling it for everyone or not?

What happened to SharePoint Community???

I'm a regular contributor to Technet Forums from last 3 yrs. During this period, I've gained like 16k points, 2 golds, 6 silver or whatever.. Contributed over 30+ scripts to gallery resulting in close to 19k downloads. All of this in SharePoint. After this, I don't see any recognition ever from any community member least of all Microsoft. I tried to contact them using email, followed them on twitter for sometime. I have not received any response back ever. Even when simply asking for feedback. So a contributing few mins/hrs daily seems like doesn't matter to anyone. So I want to know how the community works? What do you do if you don't know anyone personally from community? And If it does not matter to anyone, why do you have a recognition system in place at all? I'm sorry for my harsh words, if it does offend you. But I hope, you can understand my frustration.

Thanks
Mohit

Your profile shows activities and points over the last month. But it is difficult to directly communicate with other community members, or even Microsoft people. Have you looked for blog posts by SharePoint people? If the post is recent, you can comment and perhaps get a response.

I don't think of myself as high as MVP. I'm sure something small would do for me. Or perhaps even a feedback. I did applied for MVP just to try to get feedback on contributions, no response ever. I feel more than frustrated. It's like there is no place for average guys like me.

Hi Richard

I do understand that direct communication is difficult. And I know by my experience. So when the Microsoft people sit together and decide who should be given the community contributor, or MVP or some other recognition, what factors they care about? If someone has managed to get to top 250 contributors of year, even by small contributions, it is likely that he knows something in his field and care to share knowledge with community. It seems like if no one is representing you (because you know no one and no one knows you personally), you won't ever be considered.

Been there, done that. Truth is that there is no subjective criteria defined for assessment and eligibility. If I can't even get a response from MVP award evaluation team that you are doing X, which is okay and we think you should do y too and if you can increase your efforts on Z, as existing nominees are already doing this, then it does not help. I have seen people getting MVPs in a row where their blogs are just archives and they don't contribute at all on forums.

In addition to online presence you may want to increase your appearances making presentations in the actual User Groups. That will definitely put you on the spot. Online presence only can be enough but adding the actual presentations increases the chances.

Say, I've never been an MVP although I've been nominated a few times. I've been active in these forums for many years.

Microsoft has never published the requirements for being named an MVP, except the vague guidelines you refer to. I believe they do not want to establish fixed rules. They want to allow for some discretion. In particular, if someone meets guidelines, like the number of forum posts marked as answer, but comes across as rude or condescending, they might not be selected. And I would not be surprised if different product groups use different criteria. I believe the criteria has evolved over time, for many reasons.

The purpose of the MVP program is to reward participation and incent people to be helpful. All kinds of community participation is taken into account: answering questions in the forums, moderating forums, publishing or editing TechNet Wiki articles, writing articles or books, speaking at conferences or user groups, etc. I believe Microsoft looks for impact, such as the number of people that hear a speech or read an article. And quality is probably more important than quantity.

Hi Richard

Thanks, I understand that. This makes totally sense. I hail from an area where IT Pros community is close to none as people don't like to share knowledge. I can only make online contribution to show for. As far as I know, I have always abide by rules on forums. Besides this, I have a feel that people (at least in area where I live) don't want to know you as you don't have proper credentials or authority stamp on your knowledge and you don't have authority stamp as your impact on community is close to none. This makes it for classic chicken and egg problem. I guess I'll never be able to qualify for this. Anyways thanks for all your help, patience and guidance. Please pardon me if I come across as rude.

Client not detecting new applicable updates (client issue)

SOLVED: I was missing KB2919442 & KB2919355 (in that order).

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 client that has been patched up to October of 2016 with the "October, 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup". This system is configured to pull updates from my WSUS server. This problem I am having is my client is showing up in WSUS as not missing any updates. The systems is properly communicating to my WSUS server as both "Last Status Report" and "Last Contact" are current. I see these update respectively when I run a "wuauclt /reportnow" and "wuauclt /detectnow". I would expect my client via its report to WSUS to detect that it is in need of updates post October 2016 (e.g. "December, 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup").

Below are a few things I have tried.

  1. I obviously checked to see if KB3205401 (December, 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup) or KB3205400 (December, 2016 Security Only Quality Update) were already installed, they are not. Get-HotFix shows updates last installed in October, 2016.
  2. I manually approved the December updates only to find my client does not download them to install (as it's not detecting them as applicable).
  3. I've also tried having my client connect to the Internet for updates, but it still does not detect needing anything later than October.
  4. Ive tried stopping the wuauserv service, renaming the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to something else, and starting the wuauserv service thus creating a new SoftwareDistribution folder. Then ran "wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow" and waited 30min. I then checked for updates and still nothing (even with them approved in WSUS).
  5. Also tried "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" followed by "sfc /scannow". This does not fix the problem, by client still does no detect the approved and known to be applicable updates.
  6. I've also run MBSA with the latest wsusscn.cab. It scan results show no missing updates. The resultant report from clicking on "Windows Security Updates\Results Data" can be see below.

My WSUS server is configured to synchronize updates for Windows Server 2012 R2 products and Critical and Security classifications.

I suppose this is more a client issues than a WSUS issue. A snippit of my client's windows update log from after clicking check of updates can be found here. I'm not too concerned about the warnings on lines 55-61 as I see those same warnings on other 2012r2 systems that are working correctly.

Any thoughts?

Update: Figured it out, looks like i was missing I was missing KB2919442 & KB2919355 (in that order).

Thanks!

Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerServerErrorException: An unknown error occurred while processing the request on the server. The status code returned from the server was: 12002.

I have googled this error and try all option but still it's failing.

Hello,

Please consider examine configured timeouts on the database server side.

Maybe timeouts on the Web browser you are using.

My mouse doesn't work anymore after installing Windows 10.

Reply:

Ok what sort of mouse? Do you have another mouse or a trackpad to try do they work?

If it is a specialist mouse download Windows 10 software for it.

Have you looked in Device Manager? (right click start choose Device Manager?) Any unknown devices? Try updating the driver on the them if found (right click)

GPMC is stuck at "Group Policy Management is loading"

Hi,

We have several DC's with different Windows Server versions installed on them. One of them has Windows Server Standard 2012 R2.

We have created a central policy store and copied all W2012R2 policy files to it. We have been able to change policies on the 2012 DC but since a few days GPMC is behaving strange.

When we open GPMC on the 2012 DC it shows the MC as it should be but there is a second window opened which is showing "Group policy Management is loading ...." and there is a progress bar in it. This second windows stays open forever
It can be closed. GPMC is working fine with the 2nd window minimized or closed.

Although it is not causing any problems it is annoying and it should not be doing that. What's wrong here?

Jasper Kimmel

Hi Jasper,

What are the operating systems of other DCs? Do we also see two GPMCs running in Task Manager? Besides, we can check event log to see if something goes wrong.

Best regards,

Frank Shen

I just ran into this same problem and thought I'd post how I resolved it to help others.

The cause appeared to be a missing gc DNS record for the domain controller on which I was starting the group policy management console.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd391965.aspx

outlines a fix.  However it's much easier to just type

ipconfig /registerdns

on the domain controller missing the record.

Doing that created the record, after which gpmc starting right away without the "loading..." window.

I also wanted to note, that the first symptom I saw was that I was getting the error:

mmc has detected an error in a snap-in (related to dnscmmc)

when trying to edit a gpo.

Dear all,

I tried the fix above-mentioned without success. W2012 R2 STD only DC (I have only one DC on my network).

After reboot when I open GPMC is all OK. But after, if I close it and I re-open gpmc, then appears GPMC "Group Policy Management is loading.."

1. DNS is ok including gc record, I tried ipconfig /registerdns

2. Only at reboot I see in event log the following error:

HOW DO I DELETE AN OUTLOOK EMAIL AND OTHER ACCOUNTS LINKED?

Start by identifying whether you are referring to Outlook.com accessed via your browser or Outlook (desktop) - the focus of this forum. Since Outlook (desktop) doesn't "link" email accounts - suspect you are referring to Outlook.com in which case, your question and any follow up should be posed in the Outlook.com forum

Hi!

I've seen this on some other systems with similar problems.

Running IE as admin solved the issue for us.

Persistent Chat service missing

I am setting up Lync in a test environment.

Everything is working fine, except for 1.

I did all the steps that many sites say on how to do it.

I added the Persistent Pool, no problem, published the topology just fine.  I did Step 2 on the Setup wizard afterward, and that went fine.

But when I go to control Panel, then Persistent chat, it tells me "All the chat servers are down in the Persistent Chat pool with FQDN"

I go to the Services.mmc, and I do not see the persistent chat service at all.

Any ideas?

Reply:

Assuming you have existing Lync pool in Place before the persistent chat pool was published

Please verify that the FQDN name defined in the topology matches the server where you are trying to install the persistent chat component  this common occurrence

Please run step 3 for the certificate

I re-ran Step 3 for the certs, no change...   Persistent Chat service still doesn't exist.

As for the FQDN.....   It shows the 'next hop pool' is pointing to the front end pool.

I did have regular Chat working before I tried adding the persistent chat.

I do have the persistent on a different machine than the front-end (it wouldn't let me install it on the FE machine)

Finally got the Persistent chat service to be installed, and is running.

The part I missed was insstalling the topology builder and setup wizard on the machine that I defined as the Persistent Chat pool

Yet, when go into Lync Control Panel/Persistent Chat  it says:

All the chat servers are down in the Persistent Chat pool with FQDN <server name>    it is displaying the correct server

I had the same issue as you described. The problem on my side was due to the reason that the topology builder didn´t set the correct rights for the lync DBs. This was caused by the SA account which we renamed. You can find here a solution. Maybe this help you to solve the issue as well.

Thanks Bastian.

Install-CsDatabase -ConfiguredDatabases -SqlServerFqdn <FQDN of the pool> -update

that fixed my issue (ie, info from the link you gave)
