Lync 2013 AD Schema

Hi,

We are planning to install Lync Server 2013 in our environment and for that we have to extend the schema of our AD forest. As per the Lync Deployment team we can directly extend schema using the Lync installation wizard. I already got the details as to what is changed while schema extension as mentiuoned in the below article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg425791.aspx

As I can see that lot of attributes are getting added and lot of ACL's are getting changed. I am worried if the AD administration is going to get disturbed or if any account/group will get unwanted permissions/delegation on the Active Directory.

Reply:

All ACEs used have only "read" permissions on the portions of the Lync objects/settings of AD (Config or System partion depends). The public ACEs, also, doesn't propagate the "read" permissions on the child objects.

ACE RTCUniversalGlobalReadOnlyGroup

Read root domain System Container (not inherited)*

X

Read Configuration's DisplaySpecifiers container (not inherited)

X

*ACEs that are not inherited do not grant access to child objects under these containers. ACEs that are inherited grant access to child objects under these containers.

...why are U worried about? :)

Dear all,

the question is simple: is TSCC-decoder available for Surface RT?

Reply:
No. You would have to check with Techsmith to see if they are going to release a
product that is compatible with the video formats Surface supports.

How does SNMP send traps for an event,or who makes it send traps?

I would like to know how snmp sends a trap when an event occurs in windows. As far as I know,it doesn't do any monitoring,so someone has to "ask" snmp  to send  a trap for an event. All the MIBs which come Pre-packed with windows are in

%systemroot%\system32.

How is this information used? What exactly is the flow here?If i need to use trap definitions from a third party mib,to send those new traps,on a higher level what would I have to do?

Hope I make myself clear. :)

Please note that Windows Server Management forum is for the questions of basic management of Windows operating systems. We don't have thorough knowledge of snmp to answer how a trap is triggered by an event and how to use trap definitions from MIB.

SCOM 2012 RTM Reporting services installation not seeing SSRS instance

Hi,

Can someone please confirm for me if the RTM version of SCOM 2012 can have reporting services installed on a server that does not also host the SSRS instance? The documentation appears to state that the SCOM Reporting services component can be installed using a remote SSRS instance however when I run the installation at the "SQL Server instance for reporting services" screen the drop down is blank unless I am running SSRS locally on the same server where I run the SCOM Reporting services installation.

This thread - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/operationsmanagerreporting/thread/9309dced-e629-46a9-b548-4ac6a0c88d9f appears to show that I must install SSRS on the same server where I want to run SCOM Reporting services however I cannot find official documentation stating this and I need confirmation.

This is my current setup.

SCOM1 hosts SCOM 2012 management server and operations console

SCOM2 hosts SCOM 2012 management server

SCOM3 trying to host SCOM 2012 web console and SCOM 2012 reporting services

SQLSVR1 hosts SQL 2008 R2 with SCOM instanceA hosting OpsMgr and OpsMgrDW and SSRS instanceB to host the SCOM reporting services.

The SSRS instance is configured and working correctly and not being used for anything else. Even if I setup a new SQL server with one SSRS instance the SCOM install still cannot see the SSRS instance. I have disabled all host firewalls and the servers are on the same vlan.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, SCOM Reporting component can be installed only on the server with SSRS installed locally and configured.

in your situation I would prefer to install SQL SSRS instance on SCOM3 and place its DB on SQLSVR1 as it does nothing except SCOM 2012 Web Console. Then you can install SCOM Reporting on it.

if you have some issuues with configuring SSRS you can follow this to repair: http://thoughtsonopsmgr.blogspot.ru/2012/09/how-to-repair-ssrs-when-resetsrsexe.html

and some more inf: http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/cfuller/archive/2012/06/25/opsmgr-2012-installation-in-a-two-server-configuration-scom-sysctr.aspx

Thanks Alexis. Yes, I agree and that is my backup plan however I need evidence for management before they will approve me installing SQL components on additional boxes.

Am i correct in saying that the MS documentation appears to state that you can have SSRS remote to SCOM reporting?

This may be an SP1 addition though I am not sure as TechNet is flooded with SP1 pre-release documentation.

Hi,

1). "Am i correct in saying that the MS documentation appears to state that you can have SSRS remote to SCOM reporting?"

Dont think so, have not seen this information. In theory we would use the remote server with SRS as installation from command suggests to point any server. But dont think it will work even if SP1.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh298611.aspx

setup.exe /silent /install /components:OMReporting /ManagementServer: "<ManagementServerName>" /SRSInstance: <server\instance> /DataReaderUser: <domain\username> /DataReaderPassword: <password> /SendODRReports: [0|1] /UseMicrosoftUpdate: [0|1]

But even through that was possible I would not recommend to do so as you will increase the chain how MS gets information from Data Warehouse DB in your situation.

1 (SCOM1 or SCOM 2)->2 SCOM3 SCOM Reporting->3 SQLSVR1\InstanceB  SRS->4 SQLSVR1\InstanceB SRS DB->5 SQLSVR1\InstanceA DW DB

2). "I need evidence for management before they will approve me installing SQL components on additional boxes."

You can use SQL Standart for additional SQL SRS instance. It's free in this situation, no license needed.

Then why to deploy dedicated SQL SRS instance on SQLSVR1? You can install SRS when installing first SQL instance.

Then if you dont want to install SQL SRS instance on SCOM3 why not to install SCOM Reporting on SQLSVR1?

So you can see you have some options. But I consider the following

First:

SCOM1 hosts SCOM 2012 management server and operations console

SCOM2 hosts SCOM 2012 management server

SCOM3 hosts SCOM 2012 web console and SCOM 2012 reporting services, SQL SRS

SQLSVR1 hosts SQL 2008 R2 with SCOM instanceA hosting OpsMgr and OpsMgrDW, SRS DB

Second:

SCOM1 hosts SCOM 2012 management server and operations console

SCOM2 hosts SCOM 2012 management server

SCOM3 hosts SCOM 2012 web console

SQLSVR1 hosts SQL 2008 R2 with SCOM instanceA hosting OpsMgr and OpsMgrDW, SRS DB and SQL SRS + SCOM Reporting.

LX-3000 Echo

We are having an issue in that the level of our own voices is way too loud in the headset. Using the headset for a Lync, Skype or SIP call is almost impossible because of the echoing. I've tried re-installing and adjusting microphone levels etc, but nothing changes the problem. I can uncheck the "Listen to this device" feature in the driver, but then the opposite problem occurs in that you can't hear yourself. You have to pull off one of the earpieces.

These same calls work fine with a cheap headset with audio jacks.

VSS API revert a shadow copy on Win 8

Hi,

I understand Win 8 doesn't have the diskshadow utility, but does it still support creating shadow copy and revert shadow copy using the VSS API?

I'm trying to programming a tool using VSS API to create a shadow copy for one partition on my win8 system and revert that copy later. So far I can create the shadow copy without problem.  But when I execute revert it always tell me

"Error:The requested operation is not supported on the current operating system or by the current provider."

Is the revert supposed to work on Win8?

 Thanks!

OK, I tested more on Win 7 and Win Server 2008, it seems the revert operation was not supported on client desktop OSes, but it does work on the Server OSes.

It's quite disappointing that volume reverting doesn't work on client, actually it still very useful for power users, developers, continuous integration systems, etc.

One case is, we have a huge project which has 20GB codebase (code + other assets), during build some operations are executed directly on the codebase files, so after build the codebase would be dirty. so we have to delete it and sync again from code repository, what a waste. We use file copy to cache a clean copy now but it doubles the disk space and copying 20GB data still takes a long time.  If we have shadow copy, we can create a shadow copy before the build, and after build is done, we can revert to the shadow copy and sync new changes from Code repository.

We cannot use Server OSes, the build environment must be same for both CI systems as well as developers machine.

If possible, please add revert shadow copy support in at least Pro version. Thanks!

Change Windows 8 Pro to Enterprise

I was hoping I could do a quick version change from Windows 8 Pro to Enterprise. Does anyone know how I can do that? Do I have to perform an actual upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise using the media? I was hoping I could perform the same kind of anytime upgrade like going from Home to Pro.

I do not understand what you mean by "There is no supported upgrade from Windows 8 Pro to the Enterprise edition".

That seems to be the only way.

Enterprise is strictly an upgrade.  That's the only way it's offered, as a VL upgrade client OS.

By "clean install", are you advising we install this upgrade onto a formatted (blank) hard drive?

the information you've referenced, only relates to the licensing aspects - not the technical aspects.
Ent editions are not a feature-upgrade from downlevel editions - they are a fresh/clean installation only.
If you do perform some kind of inplace-upgrade over an existing downlevel edition (eg Win7Pro or WinVistaBus) then that is an untested/unsupported scenario and MS will not guarantee correct function/operation (which is expressed by MS as "unsupported"), and if you log a case with MS for support of such a scenario, they are most likely to advise you "please wipe and perform a clean install, to eliminate the probable cause"

If you try to upgrade from Windows 8 Pro (retail or OEM), you'll get this message: "Windows 8 Pro cannot be upgraded to Windows 8 Enterprise. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 8 Enterprise instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You'll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 8 Enterprise, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select "Custom (advanced)".

The answer lies in the Reimaging Rights doc (pdf).

"Volume Licensing customers can use their Volume Licensing media to reimage their Windows desktop operating system from an OEM only if it is the same product and version as that on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label that came with the PC."

Contact a Microsoft Volume Licensing Specialist for further information or clarification.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Yes, we are recommending exactly that.

I'm highlighting the difference between the licensing (permitted use) and the technical steps involved.

Win Ent is not an "upgrade" product, i.e. the setup engine of the product does not permit an install-upgrade over an existing installation of Windows. This means you have to clean install.

Win Ent is considered an "upgrade" product - only from a licensing/use-rights perspective.
Win Ent is also constrained (by the use-rights) such that you must already have an underpinning OEM or FPP Windows Client license, which you then (notionally) "upgrade" by assigning your VL benefit (Windows Client + Software Assurance, or, Enterprise Desktop, depending on which you bought) to the machine.

The licensing agreement says that "full" licenses for Windows Client editions are not sold through VL agreements - only upgrade licenses are sold. So you are buying the right to wipe the OEM or FPP off the machine, and then install Win Ent. This is the upgrade the guidance refers to.

[side note: neither Carey nor I are Microsoft employees, nor especial buddies. I assume Carey thought that my earlier response was helpful. I don't really track that stuff]

Well, thanks for being persistent. Your comments struck a chord with me so I did some digging around, and MS seem to have revised/clarified some of the technical library content (compared to all previous versions) - it seems to specifically answer your point, potentially in favour of your argument:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj203353.aspx

Happily standing corrected!
(I might even try it some time in a test rig, but unlikely I'd ever need to deploy an upgrade from one VL edition to a different VL edition, given the product stack we typically buy. People often ask if it's possible to upgrade from Retail to Ent, and that appears not to be possible, according to the library content, which is consistent with previous history)

So, now that the dust has settled, from what I can see on that page, there is ABSOLUTELY no licensing path to upgrade Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8 Enterprise, right?

But for the supported paths, per the table toward the bottom of the page, having already a version of Windows 8 installed, you would at the extremes be able to technically install Windows 8 and Keep Windows settings, personal files, and applications (in geek's terminology, upgrade) - or Keep nothing (clean install).

The next question comes to mind, since in a situation that interests me I have Windows 7 Ultimate:

What would it cost to buy Windows 8 Enterprise outright?  Yes, I've seen the "Contact a Volume Licensing Specialist" links above; I'm just looking for swag numbers based on other folks' experience.  Thanks in advance for sharing whatever anecdotal information you have.

I wonder whose idea it was not to have a Windows 8 Ultimate.

Mr Monopoly, hope this helps:

You buy a PC from an OEM, it has Windows 8 Pro or Windows 7 on it.

You want all the features of Enterprise, such as Windows to Go, Applocker or Direct Access.  Typically you want these because you are an Enterprise customer and have Active Directory, VPN, Remote Access etc.  So, to get these features in the Enterprise edition you become a Volume License customer and then purchase the "upgrade" license to allow you to install Windows Enterprise on your OEM purchased machines.   This can even include a Macbook Pro with Mac OSx for example.

Then it's up to you to download Enterprise ISO from Msoft and then deploy fresh installations of Windows on your OEM machines.  So yes, full clean format and install of the OS itself.   The license is upgradable, not the physical installation process.

The new feature versions of Windows 8 seem reasonably suited to their target markets.  Ie: You now get Bitlocker and Bitlocker to Go on Pro edition, previously you had to have Enterprise or Ultimate to get this on Windows 7.

I think you'd need to sign up for a VL agreement (which has something like minimum 5 seats of either Office or Windows).
You may also need to subscribe to Software Assurance on the Windows Client, to get it.

I think you could buy 4 x Office, and 1 x Windows, or something like that.

As to $$, not sure, since we buy at a different pricing level, the $$ we pay would be discounted compared to a "minimum" buy.

I guess you've seen all the discussion about what Ent edition *doesn't* bring, e.g. WMC etc?

Windows Media Center does not interest me.  Enterprise would be a better match for my needs.

Assuming it's thousands of dollars to even begin to look at Windows 8 Enterprise, one has to wonder what would have been wrong with selling an "Ultimate" edition with all the possible features at a premium "home user" price for folks who just need one or two seats.

I'm underwhelmed by Windows 8's feature set at $39.95 for "Pro".  I can't see spending more than a couple of hundred dollars to get Enterprise - the value is just not there.  My ROI analysis shows that even if Windows 8 Enterprise were free right now, it will be more expensive to run it than to continue with Windows 7 for a while, until the various driver and "new release blues" issues get worked out.

Perhaps a "Windows 8 Ultimate" edition may be forthcoming.

What changed between Preview and Production Pro/Enterprise?

We have a third party DOT Net 3.5 app that installs and runs fine in the Preview version of Windows but will not run under either Production versions of either Pro or Enterprise. We had given the green light for Windows 8 based on the Preview version and are now eating crow with it not working. A grid control that loads just fine in preview version but in the production versions and we just get a spinning circle that goes forever and the control fails to load.

Any ideas would be helpful; the vendor's only response is that it has not been fully tested. I would hate to have our clients revert to Windows 7 due to this one app.

Well it came with Windows 8 and now my work software won't install so it is basically a very expensive paperweight to me right now since I bought this for work. Mt question is, can I remove Windows 8 and install Windows 7 on this laptop which has never has 7 before? I don't want to buy 7 otherwise and I will simply return the new computer. Microsoft has cost me enough money, time and productivity so I don't want to waste anymore and then find I can't even get my money back for my laptop that I can't use.

WARNING: YOU CANNOT UPGRADE DATABASES TO MAP 8

This is not a bug or error, this is by design. Between MAP 7 and 8 there were significant UI changes and database schema refactoring, thus the full version release number. This work was the result of over a year's worth of effort and sets us up for improving MAP in a more efficient and stable manner in the future. However, those extensive changes meant that we could not provide an upgrade path from earlier versions, but databases created using MAP 8 will be upgradable going forward. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

Are you planning to fix Windows 8 soon?

I used Windows 8 for a few weeks, it is the most horrible experience of my life, it is even more horrible than using Linux, and Linux is horrible by itself.

I UPGRADED my machine back to Windows 7 and installed Office 2007 and couldn't be happier, the colors, the application performance, the wacom pen is working, and office is instant smooth, I am using my computer happily again.

Question: are you planning to fix Windows 8? not just the bugs, but the entire horrible experience, the colors, the usability, the start menu, etc.

My client has 40,000 computers, my advice is not important, but if the IT manager asks us what do we think of Windows 8, you can imagine my answer :)

Besides, what should I say in the bug? The Aero is gone? the colors are depressing? many things that could have been done with one click now require many clicks, or productivity is down due to full screen apps and the loss of multi tasking.

When Windows came many years ago, it's most important features it can run multiple programs at the same time and you can arrange them on the screen together, the latest one went back to single tasking.

It makes sense for 60 and 70 years olds, Like Ballmer, Sinofski, and Green, tiered and want to see one thing at a time in plain colors, but the rest of the world is not, will give Windows 9 a chance after Ballmer and Green are retired, if they are not, it will be wonderful to see how a 90 year olds redesign Windows again :-)

I will definitely keep the Windows 8 copy when I get older, we will all do, but for now, I would like to enjoy life, colors, multi tasking, productivity, create content, not just consume it.

Colors, aero? Silly :D

I don't miss start button. But my first action always is - switch to desktop. Every time using W8. Again and again.

There's nothing useless on Metro screens for me except searching. Nothing in ms "store". Awkward and useless Metro applications.

Bummer.

But the biggest problem for us  is VPN and the problems about network.

The problems can graduated using Hyper V and Windows 7 (is a must for VPN and older apps). Virtual switch and W8 network with built in bugs seems to be very stuffy (f.e. when you forget VM running and host is going to sleep an then to shutdown).

I am afraid to go to vacations, because I have not faithful VPN connection...

Never such problems before. I used Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95,98,98SE,2000,Vistas and W7. Yes not Windows  Millenium but nothing can be more frustrated than W8.

(you can be sure that I would not use my horrible English here if I would not be desperate :D)

Windows 8 is a cute,  but there are so many problems with it I will stay with windows 7 until they are ready. If you enjoy talking to people from India go for it!

As a retired I/T professional, there must be so many layers of management between Bill Gates and the customers he really does not understand what Microsoft has done!

All I wanted to do was get my apps running under 8 and found out they were incompatable. Nice try!!!

You are correct. After 2 month is clear that Windows 8 are not for professional purposes. Not only for administrators, but for users too.

how to block desktop with only a browse opened?

Hello,

I need to setup a GPO to block 350 machines. The users will logon as usual and after that, needs to be able to put some information in a web browser (only). All others function in the OS and desktop needs to be disabled until the action will done in the web browser, every application or command in the OS needs to be disabled, Just the "my browser" opened.

How can I do it? what's the best way to achieve that?

Regards,

Vgn3r

Just to clarify: The idea is connect the IE automatically on start up, just to run a web browser, using GPO.

The users will not able to use the OS, until filled a form in the web browser.

This requires replacing the shell (explorer.exe) with a custom interface
that gathers information and then launches explorer.exe. See

And after finishing the form, I'll need to start explorer.exe process manually so that all the desktop things can be accessible, right? I'd like to following that by GPO as well.

Hi,

I agree, based on my knowledge Remoteapp could be what you want. We could publish out IE on the terminal server.

I haven't ever seen group policy to block all desktop and only with an IE open. There is no group policy to do that.

If THAT would be the requirement: Use SRP or AppLocker to block anything
except Windows Binaries and iexplore, explicitly block explorer.exe and
use a custom shell "iexplore -k". But that would not allow a full
desktop to be started after authentication or whatever...

Windows 7 (64bit) Backup will not run after doing a complete clean installation

I am unable to create a backup or create a system image.  I have included the two error messages that I get.  Before my hard drive failed and had to be replaced the backup program was working fine.  Now after installing a new drive and installing all of my software to a point that it was before the failure the backup program will not work.  I verified that the services, VSS and SPP were started and set to automatic.  I am not sure what I should look for next. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Please take the steps in the following Microsoft Support article to fix the issue.

Here is a similar thread for your reference:

I have rechecked the VSS and SPP status and they are enabled and set to automatic.  I tried turning off the virus protection and that also did not help.  I looked at everything you suggested with no further results.  I encountered this problem once before but I can't remember how the issue was resolved.  Is there a way to only re-install the backup portion of Windows 7?  I have also checked the drive and file integrity and have found no problems.

Configure Remote Access DA not working WS2012

Hi,

i have a question about Direct acess. In my environment, i had two domain controllers, one with Server 2012 the other one with WS2012. I´ve enabled the DHCP-Role on Server 2008 R2 for Ipv4 and Ipv6. The IPv4 range was 192.168.80.X/24 and for IPv6 fec0::0/64.

The DA-Server is running a fresh installation of WS2012 and has a static IPv4 Address (192.168.80.75) and a static IPv6 address (fec::75), it is able to ping both DCs and ping all other servers in the same subnet, with IPv4/IPv6 addresses. They have two Network cards, one connected to the corporate network and the other one is directly connected to the internet (with two public ip addresses).

Then, i enable the Role RRAS on the fresh WS2012 and go to the Configuration Wizard. When I´m started the Getting Started Wizard and select Edge, there is a red cross on the left corner without a error message. So i used the Remote Access Setup Wizard.

On Step2, i selected Edge, notice the public name for the Server and go to Network Adapters, but the wizard show only the IPv4 Adress of the internal card. I activated the certificate of my CA-Infrastructure click next and reveice the following error message: Unhandled exception has occured in a component in your application. [...] An invalid IP-Adress was specified.

Please help me to resolve this error. Is the IPv6 address fec0:: not compatible with the Deployment of Direct Access?

Are you using IPv6 on your LAN, or did you add it thinking you needed it for DirectAccess?

Is a small environment, so i have enroll ipv6 and hope direct access is easier to enroll, but it was a mistake ;-)

What can i do to enroll direct access successfully? I found no errors about da-setup in the event logs.

I have changed the IPv6 range from fec0 to fd81:, so fec0 is still depricated. But the error occurs again.

Have anyone a idea, to solve this error?

The error was in the IPv6 Stack. There are incompatible IPv6 Addresses and so the da-setup will crash.

I deleted all static IPv6 leases and setting up a new DHCP-Server. Now the setup runs and DA working properly.

Microsoft License Experts: Windows Azure for Non-Profits / Charity offering?

Does Azure offers a discount price for Non-Profits / Charity? Any link?

I volunteered to build a website for a local church (in UK), so need to find the cheapest way to host it.

Also, not sure if I can use my MSDN license to do that...?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi,

As far as I know there is nothing preventing you from using your MSDN quotas to host the website. I have not heard of any discounts for non-profits, your local MS office may be able to help with this.

As far as the "cheapest" way to host the site, you may will find hosting companies offering a lower monthly price, but you shoud also factor in reliability, availability, service level agreement etc. I think Azure web sites would be a very compellng option here.

Can we get a license expert to prove that a MSDN license can be used?

It would be great!
