Excel 2007 Certification Test
I wasn't an experienced Excel user before beginning this effort. I had qualified as an "Advanced Excel User" under the Skillport Test, but I never considered their test to be an accurate measure of my ability. (It overstated my prowess.)
This is my first experience in MS Certification and I cannot believe the vast difference between the between the 3 study aids that I've purchased (Skillport Tutorial, MS Excel 2007 Tutorial, and Measure Up Certification Practice Test) and the 2 Certification Tests that I've taken so far.
I am scoring in the 90% on all the practice tests but the highest I've scored on the Cert Test was 463--my very first attempt!
The second time I took it, after studying MS Tutorial and Measure up, I actually went DOWN to 415! Which is absurd. I KNOW that I knew more about the program the 2nd time than I did the 1st time. And MS summarily dismissed my request for a hand-grading of my test.
On the MS Excel Pre Tests, I've scored 500, 659,and 545, on 8/1, 8/11, and 8/28, respectively.
I was going to take the Cert Test again today but after failing the PreTest last night, I'm spending the weekend studying the MS Tutorials again, focussing on the sections that I did the worst in (i.e., all of them).
What has the experience of other newcomers to Excel been when they try to get Certified and what have been the most useful tutorials and/or study methods?
I can't even figure out which button to push in order to post this doggone thing!

I approached my first certification having practice enough in the lab. To my utmost surprise, I failed! On going back to review some of the questions which I had passed few days ago in my prep material; I discovered that all conditions must be met in order to pass certifications. It is no wonder why some experienced IT people find it difficult to pass certifications.
Since you have already tried most of the textbook recommendations to passing your exam, I recommend you attend a Microsoft Classroom training. You'll be tought by Microsoft Certified Trainers who have sat and passed this exam. Furthermore, you'll also have an advantage in class knowing what to look for from your past experience. Try to seat your exam few days after your training and let me know how it goes.
Good luck.

Recover manually from SQL Server 2008 installation failure
Hi there,
I have experienced a serious problem during the installation of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition on 32-bit Vista, which left the installation in a faulty state, neither allowing repair nor uninstall. The cause of the problem was that I installed the software on my laptop from a ISO image located on a file share on my workstation. The workstation went offline (well, I accidentially restarted it.. ). Anyhow, this stopped the installation unrecoverable. The error message was always something like:
MsiGetProductInfo failed to retrieve ProductVersion for package with Product Code = '{F3494AB6-6900-41C6-AF57-823626827ED8}'. Error code: 1605.
Here is my solution:
As reinstallation of the OS is not an option (I don't reinstall 30+ software packages plus setup my work environment because of SQL Server!), an all hardcore suggestions in the newsgroups didn't do the trick, I analyzed the registry keys on a successful installation, i.e. my workstation. The following I found out:
1. Installation Codes and Product Codes
SQL Server 2008 consists of about 30 products registered in the Registry. Each product has a product code (a GUID) as well as a installation package code (also a GUID). For example the product CommonFiles has the product code
2E43F6A45E9061642B72A4624A886A9F
and the installation code:
{4A6F34E2-09E5-4616-B227-4A26A488A6F9}
2. How to Find Out Product Codes
Well, either you ran the installation and take the installation code from the error message and look it up in the registry, correct just this error and re-run the installation. If you did it right, the installation will go past the error, either successfully or with a new error 1605 for a different installation code.
Note: The error message contains the installation code. The product code is not communicated to you.
The second option is to look for through the subkeys of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\RefCount
and make a list of all mentioned installation codes and search for the corresponding product codes in the registry. Under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18
\Products\productcode\InstallProperties
the string value ModifyPath contains the installation code.
3. Product Code Usage in Registry
The product code can be found in a number of locations (as key):
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Features
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products
The installation code can be found (as key):
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Note: There is also a mentioning of the product code in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\UpgradeCodes. Although, I do not know if copying of these is required for a successful installation. (I did copy them.)
Note: Furthermore, the product code is mentioned in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components
I did not copy these.
4. Export and Import Keys
I exported all these the keys from the healthy installation and imported the keys into the faulty installation.
5. Copy MSI Files
I also found out, I need to copy the C:\Windows\Installer\*.msi files mentioned in LocalPackage string values for each of the products. I assume that these files are created by the Windows Installer to start the appropriate installation package.
And voilà! the installation runs through smoothly.
I hope I didn't forget anything essential. Of ocurse, this is only a roadmap, and there should be a tool that corrects the faulty installation, but I couldn't find any.
This is quite dangerous work on system and the registry, you must have calm hands and fingers!

Outlook 2007 read receipt being sent without prompting user
Set up: have outlook configured to download only the header information for subscribed folders
Control case: send yourself a message that requests a read receipt. read the message. it will prompt you if you want to send the receipt or not.
Steps to reproduce 'bug': send yourself a message that requests a read receipt. refresh your inbox so that you see the new message, which should have an icon in the Header Status column indicating only the header has been downloaded, not the entire message. right click on the folder and mark all as read. now read the message, then read another message and read the one you sent to yourself again (you may ge it to happen with on the first read of the message requesting a receipt, but i had to read it twice). execute a send/receive... read receipt has been sent without the system asking you if you want to send it!

After checking the issue, it seems this is a general Windows system issue. As this forum focuses on Windows SteadyState specific issues, this inquiry would best be posted to Windows newsgroup:

Shutdown message
Hello,
I'm using Windows Vista Business with steadystate 2.5 and i use a program called down psshutdown.exe by sysinternals. It worked perfectly with shared tools kit on xp pro but i'm getting an issue. When i run the same script on the same named computer (gates15) for example it does do the shutdown timer and does work but i can't view the message that displays though. I get this:
http://www.mc-npl.org/capture.jpg
You can only see the image when you click "Show me the message"
But before i click it, its in the Task bar blinking interactive service and it is minimized.
Question is:
How can i get it to actualyl display the message? Which option needs to be disabled?

Hi, if this issue occurs on both restricted or non-restricted accounts, we can consider this is not caused by Windows SteadyState. You can temporarily disable SteadyState or uninstall it to check whether the issue still occurs.

Is there any place i can check or ask about this problem? It is also caused by regular windows.... I would think it would be supported here since it was supported with the windows 2000 kit that came out years ago

Interactive services dialog can be turned on and off via services manager.
How can i configure this service to not include a specific program such as psshutdown.exe or enable it so it is on a list of approved programs for example and just shows up fully instead of using interactive services dialog

Hi viper0402, I suggest you post the issue to Windows Vista newsgroup as this seems to be not related to Windows SteadyState.

Link responses
Working from a company computer I don't follow links to locations I'm not familiar with so I never get a chance to see these solutions to problems that catch my interest.
Maybe it's just returning from a long weekend, but I get really irritated when I see that there is an answer to a problem I'm interested in only to find a response of : "Try this" with 'this' being a link outside of the forum.
If the answer is to involved to post here it would be nice for the responder to at least state something to the effect and then tell us that an in depth answer can be found at a specific url.

I think you have to divide this into three.
a) Writing a short text outlining the solution and then giving a link.
b) Writing the link to an existing article / FAQ item.
c) Writing a new (blog) item and then in the forum/newsgroup giving a link to that blog item.
c) is the one of the three that I completely despise (and it does happen). Even if the blog item does contain the solution, it's clear that the sole reason for doing it this way is to get people to access your site.
b) is what I often do myself. I have a large (WSS) FAQ site and I'm often referring to something I added there years earlier and have no doubt in the past answered in a newsgroup in full more times than I can remember. I see nothing wrong in this situation (and given the usual time pressures) in providing virtually just a URL.
a) is what I use if I have more time and the feeling there aren't a hundred more questions waiting and wanting answers.
Of course in addition to these three I mostly provide answers as text in the reply.
So you should consider the motives of the people who do this before you issue a carte blanc condemnation. These days most forum and newsgroup posts are read by people who do have Internet access. Shall we repliers answer 10 questions instead of 100 questions so that we can cope with the few who don't have INet access. That is the choice.

If a link is a tinyurl I will never follow it and if it goes to a location outside of msdn that I'm not familiar with I hesitate to follow that as well. I'm a dedicated paranoid when it comes to protecting my computer.
I guess I just take issue with responses that come across as nothing more than an abrupt brush-off. If I don't have the time or the inclination to answer a question I simply pass it by.

when you enable the incoming mail for DL (after get the Active Directory ready... and install an SMTP server on MOSS Farm), the workflow is this:
1) User Send a Mail to library listed in AD
2) Exchange recieve mail and store it
3) Moss start a sort of trigger and import the e-mail in library

The flow is.
You send an email to SharePoint via any email client.
the email then gets routed to the IIS SMTP server on one of you Frontend servers and is stored in the DROP folder.
Sharepoint timer job runs every minute cheking the drop folder.
Sharepoint picks up the email and distributes it to the appropriate doc lib.
Exchange has nothing to do in this process. You don't even need Exchange.

"There was an error processing the request." (EW2 Forum)
This has been the response for the last two days whenever the Submit button is clicked. Not intermittently, but consistently replicable. It happens after first logging in; it happens later, it happens all the time.
After some experimentation I determined that ignoring the error message and returning to the forum one often (not always) finds that the reply was posted after all. (Which means that I still have to make a copy of the reply I spent 10-12 minutes composing before doing so, just in case.) However, our less experienced users don't know this, and we end up with six copies of the same reply, as they futilely click the Submit button repeatedly. This is pretty damned basic forum functionality. Think maybe someone could address this issue?
On another issue, for some reason, for the last two weeks, my Profile brings up a page in what appears to be Brazilian Portuguese. I am neither Brazilian nor Portuguese, and have never set my profile to indicate such. Nor, upon looking, could I find anywhere to change a setting in my profile to correct this. Anyone know how this might have happened? How about a direction as to where to look to correct the setting so that my profile is in American English? (NOTE: My Locations in my Windows Live profile "registered information" are already set to United States. Couldn't find a setting for language, though.)
[EDIT] OK, belay that last. I found the answer to the second issue above in this thread http://forums.expression.microsoft.com/en-US/reportabug/thread/d298d9a6-8934-4e8e-baa4-fcf4138484a1. Dunno why I had never seen those upper-right dropdowns as being such, but now I know how to fix the issue, and according to the referenced post, the issue of how it gets changed will be bugged.

scott

Does the error case happen on New Thread as well or just Reply? The main cases where a Thread/Message could go through but report an error are Alerts Subscription and Tagging. With a new thread it errors out on that, we'll redirect you to the new thread and give a little more specificity about the failure.
Christoph, could you try a new thread in Sanbox or somewhere and see if you get an error there as well?

Both of my machines, both XP SP2, one a desktop and the other a laptop, consistently exhibit this symptom. No other site has similar issues, nor any issues whatsoever that I have encountered.
"Other people internally," as you know, may not see the same issues as those accessing the forum from outside your ninedot, or tendot, or whatever unroutable internal domain you use.
Actually, I got those posts up in spite of the failure, not because it does not occur consistently. It only took a short while for me to realize that the messages usually did post, although I was left staring at an error message which said that it had not. And left staring at that error message, and my purportedly failed post, forever, unless I either clicked Back or the forum breadcrumb at the top of the page (my usual practice, since it takes 20-45 seconds or longer for the forum message list to update if I use the Back button, which is yet another issue).
Although the post usually actually gets posted, that is not universally the case. I have, therefore, gotten into the habit of automatically hitting Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C to copy my reply before returning to the forum. On several occasions I have been glad that I did so when I got back to the forum and discovered that the detailed response I had spent 10-15 minutes composing didn't survive the transition.
I see no small amount of irony in the fact that this issue does not seem to plague this forum at all, or at least I have never encountered it here. (This would, I should note, seem to argue against it being a cookie issue.) It occurs on a regular basis in the EW forum, and we are daily blessed with wading through dozens of duplicated posts from those who have not yet become aware of the "trick." You may only hear from we vociferous few, but that does not mean that the forum is not seriously, consistently broken.
cheers,
scott

</s:Error>
This last message makes more sense. I suspect my delete was 'still in flight' when I made the first refresh and something bonked the SSDS server for a sec. Not a big deal, but I'm passing it on.
Here's my final observation:
I expected to get a 404 from the server when the file does not exist. my sniff of the conversation shows I get the 404, but....
HTTP/1.x 404 Entity 'messages' cannot be found.
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Content-Type: application/x-ssds+xml
Vary: Accept
x-msft-request-id: e97b2c7a-b3a8-4daa-b6e5-2a994248ea68
$MsftRequestUri: http://binaries.data.beta.mssds.com/v1/test1/messages
Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2008 03:04:49 GMT
I *also* get a change of content-type. I asked for "image/png" and got "application/x-ssds+xml" in return. In the case of REST requests, I think it's important to *not* change the content-type or at least select a content-type that will not pop the "download" dialog for browsers (content-type:text/plain would work).

I've managed to provoke a 500 (Internal Server Error) by hammering the Service with concurrent requests which queried and deleted. So it looks like it should be possible to track this down. I created 500 BLOBs and then let this code rip on it:
public void TestConcurrency()
{
XDocument xd = XDocument.Parse(TestRestQuery(""));
XNamespace sitkaNamespace = "http://schemas.microsoft.com/sitka/2008/03/";
var q = (from
xe in xd.Root.Elements()
where
xe.Name.LocalName == "Entity"
select
new
{
Id = (String)(
from
xi in xe.Elements()
where
xi.Name.Namespace == sitkaNamespace
&& xi.Name.LocalName == "Id"
select xi).FirstOrDefault()
});
Parallel.ForEach(q, e =>
{
Parallel.Invoke(() => TestRestEntityRetrieve(e.Id),
() => TestDelete(e.Id),
() => TestDelete(e.Id));
});
}

yeah, that would do it<g>.
funny thing is that i was able to get the 500 a couple times with just POST|DELETE|GET right in a row. *usually* i got 404 on the last step, but more than once, i was able to cause the 500 (8002 in SSDS error codes).
not a show-stopper, but worth pointing out.

I am looking into this. SSDS doens't have the concept of "InFlight Deletes" or inflight anything. When we return to you, the operation has been complete. Does the phrase immediate consistency ring a bell :)
This might be a bug. I am trying to repro.

It was pretty straight forward I created 500 Blob entites of ~22Kb each (a png, but probably not relevant), and then ran that parallel foreach over them, which has concurrent attempts to query and delete the same entity.
Unfortunately I'm off on vacation (till September) so won't be able to offer much help till then :-(

I posted a test app to feedback which duplicates the issue for me, feedback id is 365659.
It's pretty simple, it creates 500 records, queries them, and then attempts to query and delete them in parallel:
XDocument xd = XDocument.Parse(TestRestQuery(""));
XNamespace sitkaNamespace = "http://schemas.microsoft.com/sitka/2008/03/";
var q = (from
xe in xd.Root.Elements()
where
xe.Name.LocalName == "Picture"
select
new
{
Id = (String)(
from
xi in xe.Elements()
where
xi.Name.Namespace == sitkaNamespace
&& xi.Name.LocalName == "Id"
select xi).FirstOrDefault()
});
Parallel.ForEach(q, e =>
{
Parallel.Invoke( () => TestRestEntityRetrieve(e.Id),
() => TestDelete(e.Id),
() => TestDelete(e.Id));
});
