Is the List of Bookmarks...

Is the List of Bookmarks...

I organized my bookmarks (threads I've started, I suppose) by "most recent" and it's missing several I've done recently. The difference? They aren't tagged.

Was this a design choice you made? (Only including bookmarks that have "tags") And what's the point of having bookmarks instead of the All Threads?

Web Designers for Obama/Biden 08.

Reply:
In the right nav, under community you'll see a link to "<user's> Threads". This is every thread that user has contributed to. Our bookmarking app is separate from forums, and allows you to keep track of the urls you care about, whether their forum posts, articles in the MSDN library, or a url somewhere else on the internet. In the future, there will be a tab on the profile page where you can quickly see all the users threads, but for now it's just a link.

Forums 3 - Release 5

Forums Release 5 went live yesterday, and includes enhancements to sign-in, marking posts as helpful or abusive, and many bug fixes.

Stay signed in

With the addition of the latest version of Live ID authentication, you can stay signed in to forums for up to 24 hours. If you close your browser, then open a new one, when you navigate back to forums – you're still signed in!

Save your password

If you install the Windows Live Sign-In Assistant (part of the Windows Live suite), you can easily switch between different users sharing the same machine. Plus, you can finally save your password and sign in to forums very quickly every time you visit.

Marking posts helpful/abusive

We listened to your feedback about options in the vote menu not being discoverable, and removed it. There is now an option next to quote to let other users know a "Post was helpful". We hope this will encourage more helpful flagging, so that the best information is more discoverable. On the other hand, we've made reporting abusive posts more discoverable by moving the link back to the bottom right corner of each post where it was in the old forums.

Many bugs have been addressed in this release as well, so please check any bugs you've previously reported to see if they've been addressed. In particular, we fixed a number of issues regarding special characters in display names and tags. As always, we welcome you feedback, please let us know what you like and what you don't by posting to the bugs and suggestions forums.

We're preparing to migrate more forums over from http://forums.microsoft.com, I'll post another announcement soon with details of what to expect.

Thanks,

-Andrew

Microsoft Compliance Management Series BETA released

So you probably wonder what is a compliance guide doing in a MOF forum?

Well read on to find out.

Managing compliance issues imposed by regulations and statutory requirements can be difficult to reconcile with regulations and standards such as PCI DSS, ISO 27002, AICPA GAPP, and COBIT. An additional challenge is the lack of a single source of compliance configuration guidance for Microsoft products.

The Compliance Management Series (a MOF–based expansion of the Regulatory Compliance Planning Guide) provides Standards of Care and simple checklists to help you configure Microsoft products to address Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) requirements.

Standards of Care simplify complex categories such as Asset Management, Compliance Management, and Risk Management, and clarify how to configure Microsoft products quickly and effectively for these categories.

The Series uses Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) 4.0 to provide you with a structured approach to the planning and delivery of configuration changes in your organization.

The beta release of the Compliance Management Series is now available and will be open thru September 24, 2008 for your review.

Problems applying my Current Styles to a WebPart Zone (Content Editor)...

I would imagine its an inherited style that is coming from either the web part container or the content editor container itself. I'd need to know a lot more specifics to diagnose the problem.

If I had to guess though, I bet you are are using EM based font styles? And perhaps the web part is applying a hard coded size of like 12px and then you are reducing that with something like .5em in the table... but that's purely a guess.

SQL Server 2008 RTM

SQL Server 2008 was released to manufacturing recently:  http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2008/aug08/08-06SQLServer2008PR.mspx

You can download it on MSDN Subscriber Downloads and TechNet Subscriber Downloads.  Either search for SQL Server 2008 or navigate under Servers then to SQL Server 2008:

SQL Server 2008 Express is now available for download as well.  Details about the feature sets of the current Express Edition and the two upcoming enhanced Express Editions can be found in this posting on the Data Platform Insider blog.

If you had Visual Studio 2008 RTM (or a Beta of SP1) already installed on your machine, the installation of SQL Server 2008 requires to install the final SP1 build of Visual Studio 2008 as a prerequisite (explained in more detail here).  The good news is that Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 are now available as well.

A big thank you to everyone on this forum providing feedback on pre-release builds and support to other community members!  Your feedback has been very valuable in improving Reporting Services 2008.  Details about the Report Builder 2.0 release plan are available here.

Middle mouse button doesn't work

I have used to open pages to separate tabs in my browser. I use middle mouse button for that, but it isn't working here. For example if I go to a thread list and click a page number, the cross of page scrolling appears. But when I click the thread link, then it works and a new tab is opened. Also when I click New Thread -button with middle mouse button, tab doesn't appear.

I use Firefox. In IE tabs don't work at all for some reason even though it supports tabs.

Well, if something isn't working and it gets fixed, its an improvement. The problem is in the forum software (at least for the Firefox part and I don't care about IE because it is buggy and I don't use it).

I'm not quite sure what you are saying here, but I think it is that links and buttons on the forum pages do not obey usual browser behavior. Isn't this just because they are not ordinary hypertext links?

As you move your mouse over a forum page you will find some elements that are normal hypertext links; the text becomes underlined and the link target is displayed on the status bar. These elements have normal browser center-click and right-click behavior.

Other elements are not normal hypertext links, and do not have normal browser behavior.

Is this what you are talking about?

Silvercode,

The design of the forum is not involved as to why your middle mouse button is not working. I use Firefox 3.0.1 myself, and it's working fine for me.
Sometimes it just gets stuck and doesn't work, and sometimes it just starts working. This space is for forum specific improvement.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Yes it is because of the forum software. If I middle click a link on the forum, it works. If I middle click a "link" on the forum, it doesn't work. This happens always, not just sometimes randomly. Also what gives proof to my concept is that if I hover my mouse pointer over a link, it shows the destination address on the status bar of my browser. But if I hover my mouse pointer over a "link", it doesn't show the destination address. The "link" is propably implemented with such means, which break the right mouse click. If the "link" was a normal link, there would be no problem. So please fix it.

Oh, and by the way, thanks a lot moving this to off topic...

Clicking links frustrated by page loading

Ok, i'll try to describe the scenario - this is in reference to the msdn forums.

As a page loads, hyperlinks are made available.

As the user clicks a link, a different link may recieve the click because the loading is pushing the intended link downwards and capturing the click intended for the moved link.

Would it be a good suggestion to disable links until page fully loads or perhaps design the page better so links don't move even during a page load (may be asking the impossible).

Deploy by Machine of by User ? Another way to deal with this...

Hi

I have seen quite a few times post here and on other forums about this seemingly simple question:

'Should i deploy my packages to the users or to the machines ?'

It is usually 'easier' for helpdesk and yourself to target users, as they are the persons that will use the software, they are in the address book and you meet them at the coffee machine.

The problem arises when you assign software to "roaming users". As long as they keep working on only one machine, all is well, you target the user and the software deploys to this user, which means to his/her machine.

Once they start using other machines, the software that you assigned to them will start installing on those machines, and the user won't be able to stop it from doing so. Another problem is that a user which has a license for a product might use his account to log on to a colleague's computer so that he can also 'benefit' from the software.

So what about deploying to Machines ? Well, as stated earlier, it is not that easy to remember which machine is linked to which user (unless the machine name is the same as the user name). If your boss requests a report to see 'who is using Visio', a list of computers will probably not be what he's looking after.

So let's be creative ! What about putting a user in a group and still target his computer ?

Here is how to proceed

1. In Active Directory, populate the managedBy field of your computers so you can link the user to this computer.

 (this can be done manually or via script)

2. Sccm 2007 allows you to add specific active directory attributes to your system or user discovery (a).

At the Active directory System discovery level I add the attribute managedBy (so that the user that 'Manages' the computer will appear. This property is the full DN of the user (dn=user,ou=myou,dc=mydomain,dc=com)

3. In order to map the DN that we get from the managedby property, we need to add the attribute distinguishedName at the Active Directory User discovery level. (Note that the attributes are Case Sensitive !)

4. make sure discovery runs for both systems and users.

5. Create an Active Directory global group that will host the users for which you want to target the software.

(let's call it sms_application for test purposes)

6. Create a collection based on this (note that you won't be able to use the query editor for this type of query)

select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System INNER JOIN SMS_R_User ON SMS_R_User.distinguishedName = SMS_R_System.managedBy  where SMS_R_User.UserGroupName like "MYDOMAIN\\sms_application" (you will need to update the MYDOMAIN with your domain name)

7. Add users to the Sms_application group. The linked computer(s) should now appear in your collection and will receive the assigned packages. Note that if the user has more than one computer, they will all be member of the collection.

I know that the 'big' part of the process is to update the ManagedBy field in AD. In my environment, I had the Description field being used by helpdesk to track the computer to user association. I used a Powershell script to update this.

If someone wants i can publish it here as an example

As always, Test, test, test ! This is simply a "proof of concept", and i don't use it in production for the moment, but i hope it will be usefull for you or give you other ideas of what you can do with sms/sccm

brgds

(a) for those using Sms, there are solutions for 'Extended discovery' that can be used to achieve the same results.

Reply:

We deploy based on computer not user.  When a user requests a file we use this query.

-----------------------------------------

select SMS_R_System.LastLogonUserName, SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.UserName, SMS_R_System.Name, SMS_R_System.ResourceId, SMS_R_System.ResourceType from  SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId inner join SMS_G_System_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_SYSTEM.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_G_System_SYSTEM.SystemRole = "Workstation" order by SMS_R_System.LastLogonUserName

-------------------------------------

Since every user uses the same machine, with very very few minor exceptions we can just search the list and find the username to computer.  Then add the computer to the collection.

------------------------------------

Format Statistics

The statistics on the right are difficult to read because there is no formatting, in my opinion.

110,000 is much easier to read than 110000

This includes the stats about number of users, threads, posts, etc.

While in general, I agree with you, it's slightly trickier than that. We'd have to let the browser do the formatting since, for instance, in Europe the meanings of "," and "." are reversed from waht they are in the US. Should be doable, just a little more work and more testing than one imagines... ;)

programmatically getting a list of files in c# using a webpart

I'm trying this code in a webpart, it never enters the loop cause it doesn't find any files, but I have plenty of pages and images in that site!:

            SPWeb thisweb = SPContext.Current.Web;

            SPFileCollection collection = thisweb.Files;

            div.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl(SPEncode.HtmlEncode(Convert.ToString(collection.Count))));

            for (int i = 0; i < collection.Count ; i++)
            {

                div.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl(SPEncode.HtmlEncode(collection[i].Name) + " :fn " + " : " + "<BR>"));
                SPListItem item = collection[i].Item;
                for (int j = 0; j < item.Fields.Count; j++)
                {

                    try{
                    div.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl(SPEncode.HtmlEncode(item.Fields[j].Title.ToString()) + " : " + SPEncode.HtmlEncode(item[j].ToString()) + " : " + "<BR>"));

                    }
                    catch { }

                }
            }

thanks!

If the site is a MOSS Publishing site the pages will be stored in the pages library. It is also likely all the images are stored in a picture library with in the site.

As the this web.Files is returning 0 files it appers you are working on a MOSS site.
To access the Pages in a MOSS Publishing site use the Pages library.
Example
using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb())
  SPList pagesLibrary = web.Lists["Pages"];
  foreach (SPListItem item in pagesLibrary.Items)
  {
    // To get the File
    SPFile page = item.File;
    // Do what you want to get done to the Pages
  }

The images are likely in a Picture Library, you can access it using simmiler code just replace the Lists index with the name of the List.

Hope this helps

PROBLEM Synchronize Homepage to Desktop with Custom Restictions

Hello, I can synchronize a homepage to the shared-computer, but when I go to turn on the restrictions it no longer appears.  Since it is being saved should I allow access to the c: drive then turn on disk protection or should I consider some other option with the available restrictions, I want the computer totally secure...

I plan on starting shared-computer network in my area, that will be funded by advertisements on my website synchronized to the desktops.  Please if you operate a tech center or internet cafe let me know what you think...  I am open to any helpful info.

To make a web page appear on a desktop :

1.Set the windows and feature restrictions to high level for the retricted user.

2.Uncheck the following two options:

a. SteadyState->User Settings->certain user profile->Windows Restrictions Tab>General Restrictions>"Prevent access to Windows Explorer features: Folder Options,…."

b. SteadyState->User Settings->certain user profile->Feature Restrictions>Internet Explorer Restrictions>Thrid Party Extension Buttons

By the way, to make the system more secure, you can enable this option:  SteadyState>Set Computer Restrictions>Prevent user from ... drive c:.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Are you talking about the IE startpage or a internet shortcut on the desktop?  If you are needing to have a startpage set, you need to set it in SteadyState not just in IE Options.  The webpage that you set in IE Options is overrided by the startpage you set in SteadyState.  Now if you are wanting internet icons on the locked down desktop you should not have any problems there.  Unless the website requires a cookie to be saved.  In that case make sure the profile is unlocked, visit the site, then lock the profile back down.  You could even enable Disk Protection after that so the cookie doesn't get cleaned.  Hope this helps.

Hi,

Here I want to double confirm if I correctly interpreted your meaning for the home synchronization. If I am wrong, I would like to know how you synchronize the website to the desktops. Any more information is appreciated.

Hello

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work out quite right in my configuration.

After an hour of fiddling around with the settings I stumbled over the Recycle Bin-removal checkbox. (I wanted the Recycle bin to go away and had that checkbox ticked.) But with that setting the web page displayed on my Active desktop suddenly disapeared.

So switching the setting for removing the recycle bin seems to change the ability to display a web page on your desktop.

The solution I found to this problem is to do the following:

  1. Create a new administration account and log in to it.
  2. Configure Active Desktop with a start page and dont make it offline.
  3. With Active Desktop running right click on the part of the desktop thats not (yet) covered by the webpage (if the whole screen is covered you could change that setting by moving the pointer to the upper end of the screen to reveal a bar with an arrow pointing down - there you could change to split webbpage with icons or something like that...) and select order icons by. In the submenu you can tick of the setting show desktop icons and viola - the icons are gone.

Kindest regards

MIgrate from GroupWise to MOSS 2007

Hello!

I need advice! One of my customers use Novell for share and print services and GroupWise for messaging and documents library. I want to migrate all his system to MS. I haven't any problem with migrate Messaging service to Exchange 2007, but I have problem with migrate Documents library to MOSS.

So, I need some information about this.

Thanks a lot.

PLEASE fix templates

Please fix the templates, I tried to move the defaults down a layer so I could have my versions on top and Vista / Katmai
Did not retain the fix.

 If I am an admin on the client computer I should be able to modify the Folder structure and content of the all users templates. Even if I am a simple user, I should be able to have my own unique set of templates and I should be able to name or set the sort so that these templates are useful to me.

I don't know how or why this isn't a simple view of a folder. But the inability to use templates is My number one issue.

i know keep my  templates in a Online and Hosted VSS location and ignore the template tool in SSMS.

Hyper-V WMI PowerShell Examples

Hi All,

For our internal training on Windows 2008, we have used Hyper-V RC0 to build Hands-On labs. We have deployed up to 600 VMs distributed across 15 HP Blade Servers and all  VHD files are stored on an EVA 4000. The amount of data is about 5.3 TB

All this work cannot be completed on time ( we had only the weekend prior to the event to stand up the environment) if we employed a manual process of importing/creating vritual machines using the GUI interface. We have automated all deployment of virtual machines using Windows PowerShell and Hyper-V WMI. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of Hyper-V especially with the I/O throughput on the SAN. Even though the SAN contans all 600 VHD files that were accessed permanently during the HOL, the EVA performed very weell and did not show any bottleneck in performance. That was not the case with MS VS 2005 R2 SP1 that we used before Hyper-V.

The second suprise came from Hyper-V WMI and Windows PowerShell, it's a perfect mariage of powerful tools that allowed us to fully automate deployment of 6000 VMs (in less than a day)  and to manage the whole environment from a central console.

I've started to blog about Hyper-V WMI with some examples in PowerShell, You can take a look at those examples here:  http://dungkhoang.spaces.live.com/

Enjoy!

I am not able to get this column positioning / ordering on my page. So, can anyone help me on this, sothat i can create my dynamic controls and get those Control orders to display these controls in a a way that user wants.

Thanks and Regards,
Ravi Poonia
