Search (Browse User) Improvement

Search (Browse User) Improvement

When I search for a user (using Browse Users), I have to type the exact name of the user.

Why not

a. Search as you type

or

b. If you type in the first few letters and click search, the users name would still come up.

You can use a trailing * as a wild card

I think that we've taken that out though in our Oct release so that we'll match anythig that starts with what you type in the box.

EDIT: By the way, you don't NEED to supply an edit reason on your own posts now... ;)

daily pc problems

Hello ,everybody!
I`ve got my laptop( Acer Aspire 5920G,1,83 intel core Duo processor and ram 3gb;Vista home premium ) since 3 months and like every normal user i wanted  to have different usefull programs like Nero,BS player....
But you know that internet it`s like a big sea full with dangerous viruses, malicius software and other stupid things wich are making our live like users ,black!
Sometimes i download a Trojans togheter with these programs ,or some of the Nero Software was completely loosing of time.Meantime these bad experiences i tryed few antivirus programs wich was rubish:1st-AVG free,(2 weeks using -1 trojan and two adware) 2nd-Avast -i still was having the 1 trojan and becouse he make an backdoor the trojans become 2 ....then my system tryed to protect it self.System recovery ...result- again with AVG -1 trojan and 2 adware....then i try Norton ..
norton is good software ,but still i was having the trojan...(i found the infected file with Spyware Doctor) soo i start to search in system for the file wich is infected using the windows explorer (wich now is stoping working to me sometimes) and i find the file ,i delete it and the trojan disapear! I was glad, but not for long...the Norton stoped working,i and i was thinking that is a time to buy a secure antivirus program.(panda)
I have a problem with COM surrogate, and i dont know what is causing this problem, every time i click on a movie folder it appears! I read some postings but i still dont know what to do,couse i dont want to do things worse in the system...
I am affraid that since i had this update of the vista before 2 days (11.09.2008) i have new problems ,and new messages are appearing, even my windows explorer it`s stoping ! I am not shure that this is cousing all these problems, but i hope that i can find cure for my pc.Maybe preinstalling will help, but this is just an option wich i will do only if things goo worse...
I am confused! The newest version of Panda- Global Security,it cost me 56,60 euro and it`s working prety well!
My antivirus program is not finding any Trojans or Worms.Just some Adware and Spyware, wich are not soo dangerous ,but still can afect the PC. I hope some day ,some one will find something to completely stop all these viruses and jokes ,and hope Microsoft will help us to remove all these erors.I think that it`s my fault that i have soo much problems becouse i am try to make my pc to work with all he`s features ,and extra`s...but the best thing that all we can doo is to be carefull what we are downloading ,and try to be patient ...thanks !  Excuse me for my bad english!

Yet another bug, apparently introduced by the recent "system maintenance"

I'm just guessing, and it may be a "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" fallacy, but since the recent upgrade(?), bug fix(??), whatever, all posts in the EW forum are being marked "post is abusive."

Now, there could be some very busy little troll going through all the posts and marking them as abusive, but the timing seems remarkably suggestive.

However, not to take you away from far more important matters, please fix the bloody Submit issue FIRST!

cheers,
scott

Hrmm...

I can see where we have a usability disconnect here...

We got rid of the vote menu which was hiding valuable fuctionality and replaced it with "Mark as helpful". We then took the link to report as abusive and put it at the bottom of each post, leaving the text from the menu intact. That seemed like the right thing to do, not to change the text....

I can see though, that the "Vote > Post is abusive" mechanism is more functionally obvious than a "Post is abusive" link. The link isn't indicating that the post is abusive... it's for if you think it's abusive...

I'll take this to the PM and see what they think.

Thanks

Ah, I see. Yeah, "Vote> Post is abusive" would have been a tad clearer. Several other folks have mentioned this over on the other forum, none of us realized it was a voting link. Even "Post is abusive?" or "Is post abusive?" would have worked better.

No biggie, like I said. I'd really rather have the Submit functionality working...

Mirror Image Printing After XP Upgrade

Immediately after upgrading to Service Pac 3 for XP, all documents sent to my HP printer were printing as a mirror image.  For some reason the upgrade changed a print setting.  To fix go to Printer and Fax Settings.  Right click on your print driver and select properties from the drop down menu.  In properties,  select the printing preferences button at the bottom of the page.  Look for "mirror image" on the list of preferences.  It will probably be turned on.  Turn if off and your printing problem is solved.

Outlook 2007 and Vista - Problems! & Solution

Ok here's my PROBLEM, with my SOLUTION for anyone else having similar issues with Outlook 2007 and Windows Vista Home Premium.

  • Launch Outlook from start menu
  • Outlook starts
  • Reading Pane doesn't work
  • Close Outlook
  • Launch Outlook again
  • Outlook fails to start
  • Notice that Outlook is still running as a process in the Task Manager
  • Manually close Outlook process in the task manager
  • Launch Outlook a third time
  • Outlook starts
  • Reading Pane doesn't work still
  • Close outlook again, and then again from the processes in Task manager....

:::Alternative issue but linked:::: I also try to disable (for example) iTunes add-in from the COM Add-ins - when i attempt this, Outlook freezes and has to be closed through task manager :::::

So..... this time i navigate to:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

[Right Mouse Click] on Outlook.exe and select "Run as Administrator"

  • Outlook starts
  • Reading Pane works
  • I can easily go to and manage, disable any COM Add-ins i like with no problems - perfect!
  • Close Outlook
  • Outlook DOES NOT need closing from the Task Manager anymore. - excellent!
  • Everything seems perfect! Smile

So..... i now
[Right Mouse Click] on the Outlook.exe file and go to properties. I then check the box for "Run this program as administrator everytime" and click OK.

i double click on the Outlook.exe file and again, everything runs now perfectly.

But.... It didn't seem to work correctly when i clicked on Outlook.exe from the Quicklaunch or Windows Start Panel, but after a quick reboot of my machine everything is fine.

Try it out for yourself, i hope it helps some of you,Thanks.

Tools of choice for Sharepoint Dashboards?

I am going to be developing a Sharepoint Portal application that will have an integrated Dashboard.  What tools are people using out there to do this?  The two I am looking at are Web.UI and Web.Charting from ComponentArt and NETVantage for ASP.NET from Infragistics.

Is anyone out there using either of these for this purpose?  Can anyone recommend a tool that might be better.

Thanks for your help.

Reporting abuse

I tried to report abuse but I am totally confused about how to do that.

In the JScript for the .NET Framework forum there is an advertisement post that is totally off-topic for all MSDN forums. I clicked on the Post is Abuse link but I don't understand what I am supposed to do from there.

I don't know if it is designed to work this way, but the post got copied into the message, without quote tags or anything such as that. It is not clear to me if that is supposed to happen. If it is supposed to happen, then there needs to be an explanation or whatever so people know it is. I also don't know what to do to provide an explanation of the abuse.

If a post is totally off-topic, it's possible for the Moderators of that forum to either move it to Off-Topic posts or to delete it.

In the SharePoint forums, I and my fellow Moderator Paul Galvin delete ad posts (even if its an ad for a SharePoint product); we move to off-topic the technical posts about other products.

In other words if that post is still there then it is people with Moderator priviledges for the .NET Framework who should remove it.

What you could do is start a new thread *there* that catches their attention in which you request the removal of this post and give a link to it.

Can you access VM's hosted on Hyper V from XP Pro other than RDT or VNC?

is there a way to access VMs hosted on Hyper V from a Win XP Pro PC, other than via Remote Desktop or VNC?  Basically we want to use the Hyper V Remote Management tools on Win XP. This is because we have our hosted VM's on an internal network in Hyper V.

Reply:
Your other options are variations of the same. In theory something like GoToMyPc should work.

Running the Hyper-V management console from Vista works quite well. Is there any chance you could upgrade from XP?

------------------------------------
Reply:
We cant upgrade that one PC to Vista due to its development environment.  Well, let me ask another question to follow up. Is there a way to use an 'internal network' in Hyper V but change a setting somewhere(i.e. routing table) that would allow all our VMs in the 'subnet' to talk to the internet/our network?

------------------------------------
Reply:
You can use RRAS or a network bridge.

Reply:

We have created multiple VMs in Hyper V, all using the 'Internal' network setting which allows them to talk to each other, and the host.  All the VMs are on their own 'subnet' using private IP addresses(APIPA for now).  Is it possible to keep those VMs on their own 'subnet' and allow them to communicate to the internet or outside the host server to our network?

We have also set up an 'External' network connection in Hyper V which does indeed allow the communication were seeking, however at the cost of IP addresses from our block.  Ultimately what we are trying to accomplish is having all the VMs on their own network using private IP addresses, but still have connectivity to the host, our network, and internet.   Any insight you can offer is greatly appreciated, thank you.

With a setup like that, you could run RRAS on the host as a NAT router between the internal and external networks. I had a test system running like that with one of the beta versions of Hyper-V.

One of the problems with routing through the host is NLA. If you want the host to be able to communicate with other machines on the physical LAN you need  to make the network private. With the default settings NLA will set it back to public on a reboot and you lose access to machines on the LAN (and access to the host from LAN machines). You can no doubt fix that with firewall rules but I didn't bother.

What I do to set up a test network is to use a private virtual network (ie with no connection to the host) and use a virtual machine running Server 2003 and RRAS as a NAT router. (You could use a Linux router if you are familiar with that OS). NAT allows the virtual machines access to the physical LAN and the Internet, but hides the test network from your physical machines.

You can control the setup remotely by using RDP to the host and running the Hyper-V snap-in on your workstation. If you really want to get to the OS in the vm you can allow RDP through NAT to a partiicular IP on the private LAN.

Bill,

Thanks for the info. I'm concidering following this direction and also want to allow RDP through NAT to particular IPs on the private LAN. Could you go into details how you setup your test network? This is all new technology for me and I'm learning as I go. If that is too much trouble, could you point me to some links that can show me how to setup RRAS as a  NAT router, and how to allow RDP through NAT to the IPs on the private LAN?

MSDN Forums almost unusable..

I've been struggling with the new forums now since they changed. Battling with the multi-lingual 500 error page almost every time I've tried opening a post for the first time. After that , it works ok a couple more post views before the next 500.
Then there's the Asp.Net application error in /
Next, whenever I click on New or Reply, i get taken to the login page. Multiple times. Firefox seems to log me in more consistently than IE, but it still takes multiple attempts. Once logged in, clicking on new/reply has started taking me to my profile page.

This new forum is absolutely horrendous. Its taken me nearly 20 minutes just to get to this stage so I can post this rant - I've been taken to my profile page over 10 times, at which point i gave up on IE, and tried Firefox again.

I've tried multiple browsers on my PC (here at home) and on several PC's at work, and there's no improvement at all, although Firefox does seem a little better.

Either way, when you're in the middle of something and need to browse/request help the last thing you need is to battle the crappy forum software :(

...very, very unimpressed.

While I haven't had the problems Rob has had I, too, am not favorably impressed with the new software. Pages are slow to load, there's no way that I know of to view a topic threaded, annoying confirmation pop up when I click mark as read, no highlighting of unread messages in a thread, etc. With all the other "standard" forum software out there why did MS have to create their own, harder to use software?

Multichoice Problem to Update

Hi Everybody,
First thank you for reading my message.
my problem is as follows:
I have a aspx page that contains a list of multiple choice.
and the other part of sharepoint I use the concept of document library, content type c ad when I add a document from the aspx page I want the update of the column content type (or doc library is made ) I could do everything except for SPmultichoice I have not found a solution:

CheckBoxList control6 = (CheckBoxList) ctr [m];

                           for (int i = 0; i <control6.Items.Count i + +)
                                                     (
                                                         if (control6.Items [i]. Selected)
                                                         (

        SPFieldMultiChoice feel = (SPFieldMultiChoice) ListItem [field.InternalName];

// ?????

therefore, since the control of the checkbox list recupre I check the box but I was able to check how I can make a day of near sharepoit I have not found neither method or property.

thank you in advance for help.
it is urgent thank you

I have another question if you guys wouldn't mind: If I pass my exam the first time, am I eligible for Second Shot on another exam? I guess that's asking a lot, but MS never fails to surprise with its generosity.

Master page & horizontal scrolling

I have install MOSS and create top-level site and create one sub site. Then I selected Bluetabs.master master page. Problem is that I am getting horizontal scroll even though I did not add or change anything.

One more problem is that on top level site there is no sub menu, but on sub site sub menu i.e. "document, list, discussion" are showed which are not displayed at top level site. How do I remove sub menu from sub site.

When I change it to default master page it works fine. I don't understand what's wrong. Please tell me how to fix it or is it problem with master page.

My resolution is 1024 and monitor size is 17''.

Importance of Leadership for MOF implementation

You may come across a number of scenarios where the implementation of standardized processes to manage IT Services does not succeed as much as it is desired. One of the contributing factors to such a failure can be due to lack of commitment from the IT Executive leadership. I have been personally been part of such an implementation where the middle management (IT Manager/Operations Manager) were very positively inclined towards MOF but the leadership had little or no interest - all they wanted were "results" without having to bother about the means (read MOF) - needless to say that the middle management had no support to pursue the MOF path. The scenario changed drastically with the change of IT Executive leadership. The new leadership was genuinely interested in the value that standardized processes can bring and saw MOF as the means to the end. Once the IT leadership team took active interest in MOF - things started to fall in place.

So if you hitting a roadblock with MOF implementation look at how you can influence the leadership team and make them see value. As you can imagine you can get nowhere without their support.

Comments on your experience are welcome

Reply:
I see MOF (and all ITSM frameworks for that matter) as being very similar to the early days of software engineering.  Programmers want to CODE--not document, not plan, not discuss!  We/they want to write something, find out what it takes to break it, fix it, and continue.  Reading about code reviews and walkthroughs doesn't sound like much fun.  BUT--the payoff for structure in your software development is HUGE--errors are reduced, development time is reduced, explanations to your bosses about all the bugs are reduced--it's a small cost at first with big payoffs later.

The same is true in the ITSM arena.  I've worked at help desks where a problem was reported, and a tech would just take it upon himself to "fix" the problem--resulting in a BIGGER problem that took much longer to fix than if a process for change/configuration management had been followed.

That's just one example where we as "techies" need to realize that a little planning goes a long way.  If WE can show that we're on board, and that using a process like MOF will save money, time, and effort, it won't be long before management sees it as well.
